    The man who taught me to tie many years ago had a beetle pattern similar to this. It had a rabbit body and palmered hackle legs trimmed on top and bottom . It caught me quite a few fish when beetles were about. He had a Japanese beetle pattern that used pheasant body feather covered with ambroid cement but it was never as effective as the black one. Stay healthy and thanks

    Another great "bread&butter" fly from master Davie. Straight to favourites. I use them from August to mid September, on really hot, sunny days, with amazing results, caught my biggest trout using one of these. Have to say, the smaller sizes - #16, #18 are trickier to tie.

    Davie, I hope you and your family are all doing well and healthy. I love this particular pattern style, but one of the little ‘add-ons’ I put on mine is a small hot spot on the shank behind the butt end covered with resin. Seems to add a bit more to the patterns effectiveness. Lastly, I must ask this question...I have spoken with you numerous time and you already know how I feel about your fly tying skills...but why Uni Thread?

      @@DavieMcPhail its primarily a steelhead pattern but I've seen some people tie it into a heron spey pattern like this:www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?/topic/6020-skykomish-sunrise-heron/
      But this is the original pattern: www.frankenfly.com/skykomish-sunrise/
      I would love to see it done in a heron spey pattern but you can do it the way that you would prefer. I was unable to get a dressing for the spey version but I would like to see it similar in hook size are some of your spey patterns. Kind of like your orange heron pattern. Here it the info for the original pattern:
      HOOK: 7999, sizes 2-8
      THREAD: Red
      TAG: Flat silver tinsel
      TAIL: Red and yellow hackle fibers, mixed
      RIB: Oval silver tinsel
      BODY: Red chenille. Angora goat dubbing may be substituted.
      HACKLE: One red hackle and one yellow hackle, wound together
      WING: White calftail
      CHEEKS (OPTIONAL): Jungle cock.

    Any tips for stopping foam bodies rolling over shank?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 роки тому

      Morning Glenn,
      Just make sure you have a layer of thread down first and that it's nice a tight using a little fly tyers or cobblers wax to help hold the foam and thread turns as well..Also try and reduce the foam to a taper or slightly stretch it so that it's not to bulky as tying to put too much on can do this...I find one of the best foams to use is the one from Veniards, I have attached a link to it for you to see.
      www.farlows.co.uk/veniards-plastazote-block.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-MvG1Y2Q6wIVhu7tCh1KCAuZEAYYAyABEgIGy_D_BwE

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  2 роки тому +1

      Morning Raffael,
      I use Uni-Thread for almost all my flies but what I do is wax the thread a little to help give it a bit more grip, you could also spin your bobbin to tighten the thread to stop it going flat which will help to give you a little more grip..
      I hope this helps you..
