      As the only kid on my block with a Dreamcast, I hated playing my friends’ Playstations and N64s (even the PS2s) because the graphics were so bad I couldn’t see what I was doing.

    Capcom did an amazing job supporting the Dreamcast. Just about every title they made for the system was a knock out. There were some great SNK ports on the DC, as well. The Dreamcast is still my #1 favorite console of all time.

    John Hancock shows some more of his favorite Dreamcast games that very few collectors know about. The visual differences in Bleem! are really quite striking... Hopefully that came across in the video well...

      I remember Bleem from back in the day, I also remember a company announcing a chip you could add to the Dreamcast that would allow you to play either PS1 or PS2 games. I don't know if this was the same company or not, but it would have been fun to see the differences.

      @TimetravelerKi 9 років тому

      TheDistorted Yeah, they have financial troubles, because they never bring their cash cows to the west. Hnnnggggg! Another idea: They could release all the Saturn classics on Steam, like they did with the Mega Drive classics. Maybe also throw in some more Dreamcast classics. Instant money!

    • @TheDistorted
      @TheDistorted 9 років тому +1

      I'm also bummed that the remakes of the original Phantasy Star series were a) never finished, and b) not released outside of Japan. I really wanted them. Sega have always been terrible at business - only the quality of their products (and in some cases in recent years, their old reputation) kept them in the game. They need new management, particularly in Japan.
      I mean, Sonic Team pushing their flagship franchise onto an unknown/untested western developer was bemusing to say the least, especially since they had given fans what we had waited for - after so long - finally, in Colours & Generations.
      It's rather frustrating, they are my childhood in so many ways. I still have my Saturn & Dreamcast. I'm never selling them.
      Modern Sega need to wake up & do better, and quickly, or they will go the way of Atari :(

    No doubt someone has already mentioned it, but after Bleem! was sued out of existence by Sony (even though the courts sided with Bleem! and ruled that they broke no laws, the years of litigation were enough to shut the company down) a hacked version of Bleem! came out that allowed running *most* PS1 titles on the Dreamcast other than the initial 3 only.
    It was great :)

    • @sabin1981

      ***** Sony has a history of shutting down legal competition :( Remember LikSang? Sigh.

    • @sabin1981
      @sabin1981 9 років тому

      ***** If I'm not mistaken, Sony used a lot of legal loopholes regarding import/export laws to get LikSang shut down for exporting Japanese goods without permission, since LikSang were exporting Japanese PSPs before they were available anywhere else in the world.
      It was huge and a goddamn shame too.. the gamestore I used to work at imported a few JP PSPs and they sold out on the same day, on a Sunday no less and even at the shocking price of £250 each.

    Thanks for giving the Dreamcast the attention that it deserves. There are lots of great and obscure titles for the system. I hope that you guys do another episode with some of the others. I think that John's picks from the first video were superb. Several were favorites of mine.
    Outtrigger isn't that uncommon. It just came late in the Dreamcast's North American life (July 2001), so it's not a game that was released with much fanfare. It's about as uncommon as Sega Bass Fishing 2, which is to say it's still easy to find for about $10. Sega announced their plans to discontinue SEGA.NET in the very month of this game's release, so I never opted to pick it up. Who really wants to play a port of a (bad) Naomi arcade FPS alone? The online play was really the only redeeming aspect of the game. It was probably among the worst of SEGA's online games at the time.
    Alien Front Online was another one that suffered from Sega's plans to pull the plug on SEGA.NET. It was an enjoyable game that was ruined by pre-teen kids playing rap music through their mics. Everyone quit playing shortly after (SEGA had already announced the closure of SEGA.NET), and then SEGA shut down the severs about 6 months later. Many of these games didn't even support the BBA, which made things more annoying.
    Seaman - Leonard Nimoy was not the fish. He was the narrator. It later got a PS2 port.
    Bleem! was never given a full release for all games simply due to the technical difficulties in creating an emulator that could play all games at the time. This was the reason for the game-specific discs which included tweaks to optimize for a single game. There was discussion of various "Bleempacks" that would play numerous games, but never happened due to the reason mentioned above. It actually had nothing to do with the litigation from Sony. Bleem! for Dreamcast just ended up being a dead-end even after winning the court case.
    StarLancer was a great game. I played the PC version and really enjoyed it. Crave published several really good games on the Dreamcast (Super Magnetic Neo, Draconus, Toky Exreme Racer series, Bangai-O, and more).
    Here are some other "hidden gems" that don't get much attention. Bangai-O, EGG: Elemental Gimick Gear, Project Justice, Ooga Booga, Mark of the Wolves, Toy Commander, and the DC version of Test Drive LeMans.

    Im just happy to have found a Dreamcast at Goodwill the other day. Bought it when it launched way back in the day and unfortunately, when you move or when a new system comes out, back then, you just traded it in, so that is what I did. But, over the weekend, I came across a Sega Dreamcast, with 4 controllers, all hook ups but no memory cards for $24.99, so I had to pick it up. Got it home and opened the disc tray and guess what was in there - Dynamite Cop! Also picked up 2 games for it as well

    Bleem! is also well known in the PC emulation scene for trying to sell a PSX emulator. Also, both the Dreamcast discs and the PC program ALLOW you to play legit copies... but neither were marketed that way. They were marketed to play "backups", which has been a euphemism for "pirated games" since time immemorial.

  • @someinterwebguy
    @someinterwebguy 10 років тому

    I remember the whole Bleem! situation, as well as the atmosphere surrounding emulation of current systems in the late 90's. I remember being amazed that the DC could emulate the PS1 so well. I knew Sony would either sue them into oblivion, or buy them like they did with VGS for Windows/Mac and kill the product.
    The DC as a whole remains one of those systems that really was ahead of its time. I'm glad their are still people making games for it. That actually excites me more than the next gen systems. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is still a blast to play with friends via the VGA connection on a computer monitor.
    Great video btw. I enjoy hidden gem videos very much.

      @strykah92 10 років тому

      someinterwebguy
      There's no such thing as a piece of technology being ahead of it's time, that just says more about how many people were living under a rock. Look at how many people still credit the N64 for being the first system with 4 controller ports, I don't think that's exactly grounds for the Atari 5200 being "ahead of it's time" lol. Just sayin'.

    • @someinterwebguy
      @someinterwebguy 10 років тому

      Being "ahead of it's time" means different things to different people. To me, it means having features that may not be "new", but offer the ability to enjoy/experience games that current competition (in it's time) can't.
      The 5200 is a perfect example of having a lot of ideas, but executing them horribly. I personally believe that the DC would have done far better if SEGA didn't pull the plug out of panic. The 5200 on the other hand, had a myriad of problems that doomed it IMO.
      I understand what you're saying though. This is why new gaming systems don't interest me all that much. Too much hype, not enough substance.
      I'd buy a Vectrex-like system if it was released (and wasn't Neo-Geo X quality). :-)

  • @DJIndy
    @DJIndy 10 років тому

    The bleem story is pretty interesing. They did release a version that played all ps1 games on a computer, I'm surprised they didn't get it out for the dreamcast though. Apparently, while they ran into legal troubles, they actually won their cases in court to allow them to make their product, but the legal costs were too much anyway that the company went bankrupt.

    Seaman was the biggest selling DC game in Japan! I couldn’t get into it. Outrigger was in arcades (I think they planned to make Arcade playable against Dreamcast- not sure), and it’s first person, but tap a button and it goes to behind/above your character. It’s a blast! Very Arcade- that’s why the maps are small but tight design and gameplay!

    I know that this video was made three years ago and some people probably mentioned this is Metal Jesus, but there is an unreleased version of Half-Life for the Dreamcast. It is a leaked version and is pretty much a complete game. Just burn it on a normal CD-ROM and put it into a Dreamcast. It would be fun to see you review an unfinished game on one of the most uncommon consoles there is. You could also compare it to the PC and the PS2 port of it.

  • @Parvex
    @Parvex 4 роки тому

    For the Half-Life on Dreamcast story: They had the complete game done and wanted to release it, but then people got upset because the Dreamcast version did not include any multiplayer modes. So the developers moved the release to include the multiplayer, so the game never came out, as the Dreamcast market was given up during the ongoing addition of the multiplayer. Blue Shift was developed exclusively for the Dreamcast by the way, but was released on PC (and Playstation 2, I suppose).

    Blimey. A few people commenting that possibly weren't paying that much attention to "scene" when the Dreamcast was in its heyday. Bleem! was a big deal for the emulation scene but the guys soon realised that the expectations of making one emulator to play every game was a big call. Thus the slew of variants that starting coming out. VGS was another PS emulator around at the same time which faded into the background somewhat. DreamSNES was awesome aswell, playing DKC on DC was awesome.

      The only game I've found it worked smoothly with thus far is GTA, although I haven't tried many (as the majority glitch out). This is why that version didn't retail. The legal troubles that John referred too was that Sony put Bleem out of business via repeated erroneous lawsuits. Sony was the bully with large pockets.

Rez is like all my favorite genres, and wraps it up in a neat package. The sound track is amazing! It never died in my eyes. I see it as a success. For people that don't know much about Bleem. its first start was on PC. You would buy the CD then install it and much like the Dreamcast version it did Up scaling.
    One thing to note is that it would not play Riped games and only works on windows 98. You needed a Voodoo Card (post nvidia days) and a good computer back then. Now most if not all of the free emulators out beat it today but back then it out beat the free ones for sure.

    After 2000 most stores were just trying to get rid of their Dreamcast merchandise cheaply. I remember in 2002 my local gamestore keeper trying to shed his load of Seaman on me, he was told me I wouldn't have to pay him much money becasue he was making me a special offer but I mustn't tell anyone

    Metal Jesus, about bleem. I knew the author and supported him back when he was producing bleem, which was also a psx emulator you could use on your PC to play playstation games. His name was Randy, the same guy that made it possible for Doom on the Super Nintendo.
    Bleem ended up being a failure because Randy didn't produce updates to fix all of the bugs it had, and also had to deal with a lawsuit from Sony who tried to shut it down. Sony lost that lawsuit, as it also lost the lawsuit against another PSX emulator called ConnectX. The reason Sony lost the bleem case, was because Randy was using 100% custom code for his emulator, even for the playstation bios, so Sony had no foothold for a case against them. But bleem DID come out in stores, and I got a free copy from Randy himself, along with being one of the first to purchase one just for the hell of it. The one store I knew of that sold it was EB games.
    There were likely others maybe. They later created bleem specifically as a stand alone for Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, and Metal Gear Solid for the Dreamcast, which used DC hardware as a means of enhancing the graphics on those specific titles. Enhancements such as higher resolution (640x480), and anti-aliasing effects.
    That was a hectic time for us on IRC, where we hosted his channel, and supported him while having to deal with so many people who were upset about bleem being delayed from the initial release date it was supposed to come out, and not to mention the lack of support for updates and fixes after. Randy along with his business partner David have since then moved on. That was a long time ago. About 16-17 years. Oh well....

    Euro jewel cases just look so much better and most of all easily distinguishable as a Dreamcast jewel case from a light-year away.
    I personally like the Euro Saturn box better too, although it does tend to be a little more.. fragile.

    For the record, Bleem got into legal trouble but actually won (as they should've) but Sony was basically throwing out lawsuit after lawsuit while also pressuring retailers into not carrying Bleem if they want to sell Sony articles. In the end the company went bankrupt, but undefeated. The moral? You're basically screwed if a bigger company doesn't like what you're doing, legal or not.

      ***** Bleem as a PC program was pretty much abandoned even before Bleemcast. One issue of Bleem was software compatibility, and the other was GPU/driver compatibility, and Bleemcast side steps both of these issues. The first by making exclusively game specific emulators, and the second by targeting the Dreamcast GPU and manipulating it directly rather than through a driver.

    Loved Starlancer. Perhaps the last great Wing Commander style game to come out (which was by Chris Roberts of WC fame) and i found it to be more fun on the Dreamcast than on the PC. Also Crave was one of the best third party developers on the Dreamcast, right up there with Capcom. Just proves you didn't need Electronic Arts to have a strong third party lineup. Dreamcast forever!

I don't know if they're worth what people are charging these days but definitely worth what I paid for them out of the bargain bin at EB Games back in the day.
