- Today I'm reviewing proper London pie & mash at Maureen's E14. A proper traditional pie, mash and eel shop which has been established for over 60 years. Pie & mash in London is a proper tradition and the liquor is Off the Charts. Pie, mash & liquor is a tradition which goes back to war times.

I'm a South London boy so I love Arments, but I watched a review on Gary Eats and tried Maureens a couple of weeks ago. It's the best I have ever had and so cheap !!!!
I'm a double pie single mash man. Like a lot of pepper and 4 pies to take home and freeze.
It's a 10 out of 10 place.

Yes I go to Maureen's now as Broadway Market Hackney has shut,Arments is too dry and no flavour and South London just doesn't work for pie & Mash except Manze Tower Bridge Road
Definately a number one Vlog. Whenever i'm in London for a few days it's a must for me to visit one of the following pie and mash shops. Maureen's , Manze's, F Cook and Arments for pie and mash, Pellicci's for breakfast and Poppies or Toffs for fish and chips..Re My theory why spoon and fork are used to eat pie and mash is that when they started pie and mash in london during the 1800's most people were unfortunately illitterate and uneducated and not many knew how to use knife and fork si they ate pie and mash as we eat them nowadays. I love my pie and mash with chilli vinegar on the upside down pies and pepper on the mash. So Yummie. keep on the good work Darren J and thanks for bringning me memories of London as i live in Malta

Do they not have this OOP North? That surprises me because they most likely have better Pies!
Maureen’s is epic. Used to live nearby and never found a better steak pie.

Pie and mash!! Now that looked delicious especially the pies! Your expressions upon first mouthful are right up there with Mr Wiens IMHO! And I honestly don’t care what your channel is called! It is top quality every single time whether it’s good food, history of the food or history of the street before the food!! It’s your channel and you call it whatever you like! They’re all gems DJ! Hi Darren, for a pie and mash shop to be there for so long it has to be one of the best , I remember a pie and pea stall in Leeds market in the 60s , they were nice with mint sauce
Why is it that the simplest food like pie mash and liquor is the tastiest. Good comfort food you can't beat it. Great food vlog. Cheers Darren keep them coming.

I'm from NYC but agree that Maureen's has the crown for best pie and mash in London. I think it is the creaminess of the mash potatoes and the buttery, flakiness of the pie that distinguishes them. I like chili vinegar, ketchup and daddy sauce on the side.
I do love Maureens Pie Mash, 11 out of 10. I could eat it everyday. It is what I miss most about no longer living in London. I use yo eat Pie mash at least twice a week 👍👍😁 Heaven on Earth Darren
Unique flavour, which is slowly losing favour in modern, "multicultural" London regrettably [the pie shops are closing like crazy]. Always the first port of call when I visit the big smoke.

Loved this my Nan was a Londoner through and through . Pie mash ears and liquor was the meal to have ! Oh yes ,off the charts,.🤩👍❤️👏🙏🏼

Man of my own heart DJ, I do love pie and mash with liquor. My mother was brought up with it in London during war times and through the 50s and 60s living in Lewisham. To this day she loves it too although no eels for her or myself not our thing. Agree DJ turn the pie over and lashings of chilli vinegar and pepper.

Turn the pie over and open it up, vinegar and pepper, spoon and fork, that’s how I was brought up on it at Manzies in Walthamstow!!! Quite surprised they are still open with the locals that live there now, whites in Walton on the Naze is lovely too 👍

Whites is banging. Take my mum there whenever I’m in clacton. Try Cockneys down portobello rd. best I’ve had. Done Manzes, Cooks, Goddards. Several others. Cockneys is the one for me

Love pie and mash Saturday treat as a kid, but never been to Maureens have to give it a try loved lovely.

That looked good. 8 quid is outstanding value. Have been before to one of those historic places and enjoyed the plate I had. Yes spoon and fork and a nice cup of tea. Great review fella.

That looks like a cracking meal. Pies are so popular up here in the grim north but we don't have traditional pie & mash with liquor. First time I tried it in London it blew my socks off.

Looks absolutely spiffing me old china. I'm London born and bred ( West End 😬), but been living in Ireland the last 8 years. Coming home this year for good, and cannot wait to taste the London food again ( it's a London thing 🤫) . Fish n Chips ( proper ), Roast Dinners ( proper ), Pie n Mash ( proper ) and of course , a Ruby Murray ( proper ). Pray for me mate.

Oh the nostalgia, I lived 5 minutes walk away from the market for 29 years. Maureen’s used to be facing East India Dock Road unless I’m going mad. The food gets delivered far and wide - there’s a place near me that delivers or you can eat in there. Always salt on potatoes and a tiny amount of vinegar on the liquor.
I NEVER turn the pies upside down though. Why do people do that? Oh and yes, has to be a spoon and fork, I can’t even think of eel juice 🤢🤢

As a Londoner I miss this so much. I could taste every mouthful you took and was there with you. I moved to Scotland to be near my daughter, forget the Haggis (though it's great) it's the pie 'n' mash I miss most...........Dammm i'm having a withdrawl moment now!

Food looks good in an area that's totally changed over the years. I personally don't like the area and wouldn't want to go there at all however you've tempted me to visit with this review.
Pie, mash & liquer is on my to do list. Nowhere ooop North seems to do it. It's definitely a London thing.

Looked lovely Darren that did. Only been to a pie and mash shop once and I loved it. Just can't remember where now as was about 12 years ago when I visited London.
Back in the late 80's I was working in the Brixton area, on every Friday Lunch time, myself and me mate went to a Pie n Mash Shop in Coldharbour Lane Brixton, Double Pie, Double Mash n liquor, but on one occasion they had no mash, so we had 4 Pies each, half way through, the Owner shouted "OK Lads we have made Mash" he then put Double Mash on our Plates, stuffed, it took us nearly an hour to finish it.

My Dad and Grandad were from Poplar. When I worked as an architect at Canary Wharf back in the day, some of lads would go for pie and mash,
I can't do jellied eels though although my Grandad loved them.

You might want to edit near the beginning. You said Chilli Oil. I know you meant vinegar, but those not familiar with the food of the gods may get confused. Great vid mate.

Used to love pie and mash from cookes at dalston. Unfortunately was diagnosed coeliac back in 2011. So just memories for me now. Got to be the quickest meal to eat. Plus no waiting.

Hey DJ, thanks for doing the pie and mash! Of course I was salivating! When I was a kid we would have real eel pie and liquor. Also, lovely jellied eels. I love conger eel steaks. Yum yum! Even today I have Unagi which is barbecued eel in a sushi roll. Thanks for sharing.😀

Some of these comments got me thinking. How come no one opened a pie and mash shop in Spain they would make a killing with all the ex pats. A little taste of home. Lovely grub nothing beats it warming filling comforting. Reminds me of all bunking out of school to go get pie and mash.

Not one to knock anything without having tried it first I've had this meal several times now with friends from the South and it's always failed to impress , the liquor as you call it just tastes like parsley sauce and where I live that's eaten with fish.
Pie , mash and gravy...now that takes it to the next level 😁
