  • Is this the best food in London?...
The Cockney Cabbies head over to Manze's Pie Shop on Tower Bridge Road to sample Pie & Mash!
Michele Manze arrived in Britain from a picturesque hillside village called Ravello in Southern Italy. His family made the long trek over in 1878, when Michele was just 3 years old.
The Manze family settled in Bermondsey and began trading as ice-merchants, turning later to ice-cream makers. Realising the need for more substantial food in post-Victorian London, Michele branched out into the pie, mash & eels trade.
The first shop to bear his name opened in 1902, shortly after his marriage to Ada Poole, whose first husband, Edward Poole, had died in 1891. This shop was at 87 Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey. He went on to open his second shop at 250 Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey in 1908, and two further shops in Poplar, which were lost during World War Two. His Fifth and final shop at 105 Peckham High Street was opened in 1927.

Manze's was always good. The only thing that is not authentic is Chili Vinegar, when I was a lad definitely no chili vinegar in any Pie and Mash shop I remember, that's very much a modern thing. We used to go the Pie and Mash Shop in Lambeth Walk, there was also one in The Cut too. Good vid guys.

Must agree, I don';t remember Chilli Vinegar when I was a kid either, just good old "non brewed condiment" as it now has to be labelled

I was born in Camberwell, brought up in Camberwell and Peckham, went to Paragon School just off the Old Kent Road and we sometimes used to go Broomfields the bakers (the Gregg's of its day) on Tower Bridge Road during school dinner times.
I prefer Arment's too and as kids we used to go to the one on Westmoreland Road, then on to Walworth Road and cut through Marks and Spencer to 'the Lane' or East Lane/East Street market and have hot sarsaparilla in winter too or cold in summer. We also sometimes after school went to Baldwin's health food shop on the Walworth Road for sarsaparilla too.

Really enjoyed the video. Went to Manze's on my second trip to London and loved the place. First time I had jellied eels as well.
But HOT Sarsaparilla? I never tried that in the UK. Over here in the states Sarsaparilla is more like Birch or Root Beer and is carbonated.

Liked the approach subscribed to see your next one but you didt show the food should have showed cutting the pie. Nice character but focus on showing the food. The point is your having the nice pie but you didt share it with the audience. Just cutting one of your two pies in half would have better from a viewers point. Look forward to your next. Especially a cabbies food booth, good luck with the blog.

Back in £.s.d. days, Manzies in Walthamstow sold jellied eels, pie, mash and liquor with adams ale. On saturdays, outside on their market stall, huge crowds would stand and watch as you chose your live eels and watched them being chopped up
