- Four corners drama game:
Label the four corners of the room / studio
You can use numbers, colours, or my favourite - objects!
Have a volunteer close their eyes whilst the class walk around the space (or hop, skip, Jim’s, whatever you choose).
The volunteer calls ‘corners’ and the class must scatter to their chosen corners - let them be free to choose - it doesn’t matter how many in a corner or if the groups are uneven, or even if a corner is left without any students.
The volunteer (still with their eyes closed) selects and calls out one of the counters.
The students in the selected corner act out a spontaneous improvisation (this could be based on the object the corner is named after, or chosen by the teacher / coach).
Alternatives include catching a group out if they are called (although I’m not so much a fan of ‘catching’ students out and prefer it to be a positive, creative experience).
This can be a handy way of creating groups organically…if the groups seem to work well why not give them some time to work on their improvisation, changing it from a spontaneous to a devised mini piece.
I’d love to know how you get on with this game or if you have any alternative versions.
Thank you for sharing your ideas, it's inspiring! 👍
