Journey into Screen Acting - Part 17
Trying out our new #selftape setup!
Spotlight suggests Dulux Steel Grey 1, however we discovered that's trade only, so purchased a colour match of Dulux Natural Slate - we hope you like it?
We've erected our softbox lights - we have two, one at a higher angle than the other. We've got them out because Lacey has an important, exciting self-tape request, but also because the nights will be drawing in now and it'll be more difficult to use the natural light before/after school.
We've also plugged in my USB mic
(192 KHz/24 bit studio cardioid condenser microphone with a pop filter and shock mount)
When I had used the teleprompter earlier in the week, I discovered it blocked / distorted the sound, so I'm hoping plugging in an external mic will help. Listening back I still think the sound isn't great from the kitchen as there are no soft furnishings to soften the sound. For Lacey's self-tape later I'm going to surround the back of the phone/mic set yp with umbrellas that have large cushions inside...I'll see how that goes. Failing that for the future I'll cover other walls in some (tasteful - hopefully) sound baffling pieces.
We talk about Lacey having been away on residential (and getting a self-tape request whilst away), how she's settled into her new dance school, and also about the recent self-defence workshop she attended. EVERYTHING is training when you are an actor (!)
I talk about being let go from a feature film as my travel into London is too high for low / zero budget films. This is understandable and I've learnt a lot already and made some great connections. This led me to creating a video on accepting 'rejection'.
We also mention styling for characters, and how you dont need a costume but should hint at the type of character you are playing in your self-tape.
Thanks for watching, we hope ypu find this useful and we'll update again soon!

Managing Dyslexia as an Actor

The tape where you read a quote or piece from a book or poem you have made has to be 30 seconds or less. The second tape has to be 1 minute or less. Also, that comment is not true.

    • @TheDramaCoach

Tape 1 = 30 seconds or less (performing), tape 2 1min or less (talking) (please don’t ‘read’ in either tape though - make sure you are off book so the camera / casting director can see your eyes). You don’t have to pay, just keep your videos below a certain resolution…there was an earlier comment from someone who checked this out 👍🏻

Quick question do you mind suggestions for poems monologues ?

    • @TheDramaCoach
      @TheDramaCoach 21 день тому

It’s a very personal choice. Obviously something that suits your own accent. You can use a piece you’ve done before, I’d ask a drama teacher or coach that KNOWS you if you can. Pick something you ENJOY performing. I personally like a piece that has come from a whole play, but there’s nothing stopping you using a stand alone monologue, like one from the LAMDA specification. Trilby James has some great monologue compilations. Peg Kehret has published a lot of monologue complications too. Don’t forget to keep your piece to a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds - that’s not long (!) Best of luck

Hello again, strangely it won’t let me answer your question about tips for an American accent so I’ll answer here. Obviously the gold standard would be to get an accent coach…but that can be expensive. And of course there are many different American accents. The one we hear the most on hit TV programs is usually referred to as ‘standard American’ (or sometimes ‘general American’) my daughter and I have worked on ours by listening, copying, recording ourselves, listening back and discussing / tweaking. We sometimes just chat together in an accent we need to rehearse (but of course we are very comfortable making mistakes in front of one another). There’s lots of accent videos here on UA-cam which can be really useful and break down the differences in standard English accents vs standard American - try the word water for example…Best of luck 👍🏻

hello? how do actresses do heavy mouth breathing speaking say after foot chase or while heavy make out scene. breathing through mouth? what about female singer breathing heavily mouth after performing live? do you experiment tantrically too? id love to see you live q&a ask you some breathing questions. like if you do full cardio hiit workout can you have coregasm during recovery mouth breathing but would you faint cause breathing making you lightheaded?

Always keep an element of control, I don’t want any actors fainting (!) I’m fascinated about using breath in performance both for theatre and TV. I don’t currently do live q&a’s but it’s something I’ll think about for the future.

@@TheDramaCoach what about the kissing scenes? like in Romance? do you find breathing arousing sexy? can you show how to get out of breath and calm it down
