Journey into Screen Acting - Part 17
Trying out our new #selftape setup!
Spotlight suggests Dulux Steel Grey 1, however we discovered that's trade only, so purchased a colour match of Dulux Natural Slate - we hope you like it?
We've erected our softbox lights - we have two, one at a higher angle than the other. We've got them out because Lacey has an important, exciting self-tape request, but also because the nights will be drawing in now and it'll be more difficult to use the natural light before/after school.
We've also plugged in my USB mic
(192 KHz/24 bit studio cardioid condenser microphone with a pop filter and shock mount)
When I had used the teleprompter earlier in the week, I discovered it blocked / distorted the sound, so I'm hoping plugging in an external mic will help. Listening back I still think the sound isn't great from the kitchen as there are no soft furnishings to soften the sound. For Lacey's self-tape later I'm going to surround the back of the phone/mic set yp with umbrellas that have large cushions inside...I'll see how that goes. Failing that for the future I'll cover other walls in some (tasteful - hopefully) sound baffling pieces.
We talk about Lacey having been away on residential (and getting a self-tape request whilst away), how she's settled into her new dance school, and also about the recent self-defence workshop she attended. EVERYTHING is training when you are an actor (!)
I talk about being let go from a feature film as my travel into London is too high for low / zero budget films. This is understandable and I've learnt a lot already and made some great connections. This led me to creating a video on accepting 'rejection'.
We also mention styling for characters, and how you dont need a costume but should hint at the type of character you are playing in your self-tape.
Thanks for watching, we hope ypu find this useful and we'll update again soon!

Managing Dyslexia as an Actor

Managing dyslexia as an actor can be extremely challenging especially at read throughs. Here are some tips that may help you: Use coloured paper to print your script in such as light blue, light pink or yellow. Experiment and find what works for you. I now print on white but highlight in pink, this really helps my words pop and I can read them so much easier. I also use yellow (underline) for d...

Thanks so much for the tips! I'm going to be auditioning for Harry.
Hi! I’m going to audition and I was wondering how long each tape can be maximim? Also I read a comment that said you had to pay to submit your tapes? Is that true? Thanks for the help!
The tape where you read a quote or piece from a book or poem you have made has to be 30 seconds or less. The second tape has to be 1 minute or less. Also, that comment is not true.
Tape 1 = 30 seconds or less (performing), tape 2 1min or less (talking) (please don’t ‘read’ in either tape though - make sure you are off book so the camera / casting director can see your eyes). You don’t have to pay, just keep your videos below a certain resolution…there was an earlier comment from someone who checked this out 👍🏻
I’m auditioning for Hermione ! ^^ ( I have my poem, and I’m already prepared :3)
Great work! And best of luck
Hey, just wanted to drop in and say your youtube channel is a great initiative and super helpful for any budding actor who’s starting out
Hey, that’s so great to hear. I set it up to try and help students and teachers and parents of budding actors so it’s super to hear you say that. Thank you
Hey, this was super insignificant and nice
Oh I’m so glad 😀 Thank you for your lovely comment 😊
Can you make your own script to act
Yes you can 👍🏻
I think so
Rodriguez Brenda Martinez David Johnson Edward
Im 12 but short for my age nd jist tirned 12 can i still audition
No, I’m afraid not, according to the rules for this one. But great that you are short for your age - this can be a real bonus for future castings 👍🏻
Yes it can't hurt can it
Can You Still Audition Even If You Don't Live In UK Or Ireland But Willing To Travel
no
No, I’m afraid it’s a UK casting call
You should check out Rainer Fassbinder's "Katzelmacher" which is centered on Brecht's Alienation Effect
Oh I will, thank you
Could you do a video on grade 6 devising duologue knowledge
Are they talking about LAMDA? I have one for the knowledge questions, for the previous spec if that’s useful…?ua-cam.com/video/2tpt1yoSN3Y/v-deo.htmlsi=qtyyFygd-vXhfto- note this is the old specification so there may be some differences now (!)
if im 13 do u think I still have a chance
Unfortunately not, at least for Harry, Ron and Hermione. But remember this will be a multi-year project and they will be looking for other roles in the future. Perhaps now is the time to up your game so you have a better chance for those parts in the future!
My grandma taught me that one she also taught me 2 more JACK MCGORY I'll tell ya a story about Jack mcgory now my stories begun I'll tell ya about about his brother now my stories done WILL YOU? Will you won't you can't I koax you aw come on you said you could I thought you might I don't see why I thought you would. Hope you like them!
Oh I love these - great ones, nice an snappy. Thanks for sharing!
Do we need an agent?
Absolutely not, it’s an open casting. If you do have one though, let them do the work for you!
Do we need an agent?
No, you can self submit. But if you do want an agent for the future check this out: ua-cam.com/video/-I54ntrxB0s/v-deo.htmlsi=lbqfcxXvdv0SPS9i
Oh this is so British, love it!
Yes indeed it is!
Can the video of us performing a play or monologue or scene be from a movie or show?
Sure, I don’t see why not (just not from HP) - and don’t try to ‘copy’ those doing it…make it your own - feel it, ‘wear’ it differently and enjoy it!
@@TheDramaCoach okay, thank you!
@avv_ae no problem 👍🏻
Quick question do you mind suggestions for poems monologues ?
It’s a very personal choice. Obviously something that suits your own accent. You can use a piece you’ve done before, I’d ask a drama teacher or coach that KNOWS you if you can. Pick something you ENJOY performing. I personally like a piece that has come from a whole play, but there’s nothing stopping you using a stand alone monologue, like one from the LAMDA specification. Trilby James has some great monologue compilations. Peg Kehret has published a lot of monologue complications too. Don’t forget to keep your piece to a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds - that’s not long (!) Best of luck
Hey umm I have a quick question should you also put your name in the get to know you piece or is that not necessary?
Personally I would. It just makes sense for a natural slate 👍🏻
@@TheDramaCoach ok thank you and i hope your daughter does well ❤️
@Shruti-yx6ho thank you so much
@@TheDramaCoach no problem ❤️
In the video where you have to talk about a poem, story or monologue can I talk about a story from a book that’s also a movie for example maze runner?
Don’t talk about this bit (you talk for the second video). PERFORM a monologue, poem or created piece. Hope that helps? You can use a script from a movie, but you must perform.
@@TheDramaCoach Oh right, thank you for explaining.
@avv_ae no problem at all. Glad it makes sense 👍🏻
I’m turning 12 in May but it said I had to be 9-11 by April . I’m I fine?
Good question - if you are still 11 in April then sure, it sounds like you are fine - best of luck
Actually don’t wanna start “drama”pun not intended it says you have to be within the age range by 2025 April so maybe not sorry about that
@Fnaf_studios123 yes good spot and good pun - I was just telling someone else about that
Which link we should use to apply please?
It’s in the description
Thank you. Very helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
It says you have to pay premium membership to upload a video 😔
We've got round it as the pro membership is for uploading videos over 100MB so we've just downloaded them at a lower bit rate and it hasn't affected the quality really 👍
Oh interesting. I’ve heard different things from different people. If you have an agent 💯 get them to apply for you. I signed up for free, but I’m holding off on uploading the video for my child until my agent has heard back. I’ll update when this is done.
@rachelfreeman-powell8608 oh great well done! 👍🏻 I hope this comment helps others too. Again if you are submitting via an agent they can advise on resolution that’s preferable to the casting director(s). Best of luck!
It says on the website 30 seconds maximum for the first self tape
Oh great spot!!! I would have merrily gone with minimum - you are quite right - I’ve just checked 30s & 1m - MAXIMUM!!! Hope everyone reads your comment! Thank you for commenting 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤩🤩
How to contact you?

@@TheDramaCoach drama is good learning method.. so how to use it, in your country ?
@@dilrangaperera252 if you like acting and can act there are many ways you can use this to teach your students. Create the world within your space and guide them through it in character. It depends what you want to teach them. I used to like re-creating scenes from Shakespeare plays. As well as more modern crime drama themes.
@@TheDramaCoach thank you 💗
My family is always doing drama how do I get it to stop
Oh dear, sorry you want it to stop. Why don’t you want them to learn drama?

😂 Haha - I mean Bertolt Brecht - but thank you for your comment 👍🏻
Aww, this is so cute. I'm glad you two got to have roles in the same play, those are precious memories.❤
Thank you. And thanks for taking the time to write this lovely comment 🥰. We love working together 💕
Hello again, strangely it won’t let me answer your question about tips for an American accent so I’ll answer here. Obviously the gold standard would be to get an accent coach…but that can be expensive. And of course there are many different American accents. The one we hear the most on hit TV programs is usually referred to as ‘standard American’ (or sometimes ‘general American’) my daughter and I have worked on ours by listening, copying, recording ourselves, listening back and discussing / tweaking. We sometimes just chat together in an accent we need to rehearse (but of course we are very comfortable making mistakes in front of one another). There’s lots of accent videos here on UA-cam which can be really useful and break down the differences in standard English accents vs standard American - try the word water for example…Best of luck 👍🏻
@TheDramaCoach Thanks, for the advice youtube can be strange sometimes.
@BlueLightning141 right, I could see you said ‘to put into context…’ but nothing more. So I hope my comment still makes sense / is useful, feel free to ask more or finish your question 👍🏻
@TheDramaCoach Yeah, in my original comment where I wrote "to put into context" I went on to write that I've got a Suffolk/London accent. Anyway, I'll work on "water" and many other words.

hello? how do actresses do heavy mouth breathing speaking say after foot chase or while heavy make out scene. breathing through mouth? what about female singer breathing heavily mouth after performing live? do you experiment tantrically too? id love to see you live q&a ask you some breathing questions. like if you do full cardio hiit workout can you have coregasm during recovery mouth breathing but would you faint cause breathing making you lightheaded?
Always keep an element of control, I don’t want any actors fainting (!) I’m fascinated about using breath in performance both for theatre and TV. I don’t currently do live q&a’s but it’s something I’ll think about for the future.
@@TheDramaCoach what about the kissing scenes? like in Romance? do you find breathing arousing sexy? can you show how to get out of breath and calm it down
