This month Harbor Freight released their EQ12SCGXT 1/2 in. Super Compact Air Impact Wrench and it looked familiar, so is its performance familiar as well? Let's find out.

As always Torque who started this channel is working for Astro Tools who make the 1894 impact included in this episode, always consider multiple sources when looking at tool!
Once again HF has lowered the regular price of the tool since introduction in the last week, like they did on the Hercules high torques. So this impact is $130, happy days! Maybe it's only us who pay the early adopter tax =D Rankings have been updated for those who have them (399.1 points, 23rd)
about a week or 2 ago HF released 2 new brushless Bauer "mid" torque impact wrenches 3/8" rated at 450 ft lbs and 1/2" rated at 475. I can't wait to see if they are actual mid torques or if they barely get to the 200 ft lb mark on the dyno.
@@pyrodon1910 They are near carbon copies of the Hercules "mid torque" we've tested, with just a slightly smaller motor. Hasn't piqued my interest that much, I'll see what the consensus is over here.
@@TorqueTestChannel HF has lost their "addictive pricing" advantage over the competition. If they had those new "mid" torques packaged with a battery and charger for under $100 i'd be far more tempted give it a try.
@@TorqueTestChannel when are you gonna do the new bauer brushless mid torque impact wrench ive been waiting for a comparison vs the old brushed bauer
Can you test the 12v "roadside" type impact? They are really cheap and good enough for tirechange. ua-cam.com/video/euMIEHxNn58/v-deo.html
Great video as always guys, but one Detail:
Don't be too harsh on Hazet, they are basically the German equivalent to Tool Truck Tools.
Yeah they sell directly to consumers, but they have to, considering how much smaller Germany is compared to the US/CA.
They also produce 90% in Germany, some at a loss and make that up with their bought in Tools which still have the great Hazet guarantee.
And they don't really focus on the US, i am from Germany and their 9012TT sells for 175 here including tax.
So yeah, would recommend the 9012 If you live in Germany, as their is little competition except for maybe KS around here, but If you live in the US Go for the harbor freight one.
Hey thanks for the insight!
@@TorqueTestChannel Always Happy to provide it, if I can.
German tools only really makes sense (with a few exceptions of course) If you live in Germany.
I think (!) That some Hazet impacts are actually Made in Germany, because of their absolutely unique Look and Tank like built quality, which also matches the price.
I got the feeling, when talking to an Hazet rep, that the 9012TT Line are more of a prosumer line and the shops generally don't buy them, what matches my expierience from working in those Shops.
The 9012M/9011m is an exception to that rule because of it's small size, but apart from that I haven't seen an 9012 in a shop, yet.
I have however seen their 9012SPC used widely around here and many shops prefer it to the 9012TT or the 9012EL-SPC, although the 9012-SPC is the lowest Torque Rating of them.
Me and other mechanics feel Like that the 9012-SPC Delivers 110% everytime all the time, while the others 9012 don't really do what they advertise them for.
But that is totally subjective and I have no way of prooving that or backing it up, so please, nobody should quote me on that.
In my opinion, the 9012spc is even weaker than the 9012tt, the most powerfull one In my opinion is the 9012EL-spc.
But overall im quite disappointed of what Hazet became in the last years. Rebranding tools is not what I am expecting from a company like them.
Take a look at the Ingersoll Rand 2235qtimax… looks quite familiar to the hazet spc, as well as the hazet tt and the capri, or even the 9012att, which is also available from snapon, Matco and capri, so I would roughly guess, it’s not made by hazet as well, and so on and so on
love y'alls mission to hold tool makers accountable for their advertising, even though I don't hardly use power tools haha. just bought the spreadsheets, keep doing your thing!
Hey thanks!

Crazy to see how far this channel has came. I remember the post on the Garage Journal mentioning the new channel and now you're at more than a 1/4 mil subs. Keep up the good work!
These would be sweet for off-road rigs with onboard air compressors like the ones from ARB. Speaking of, testing portable air compressors would be a neat video series.
ARB doesn’t have nearly the flow needed. You’d get bursts every few minutes. It ends up being better to carry battery tools. I even have an engine driven compressor and it would struggle with an impact
@@ChrisZBr0wn yep and CO2 the tools freeze up.
@@CraigGrunenfelder exactly! There’s a reason Rory on Trailmater carries a Milwaukee impact. Just works.
@@ChrisZBr0wn my converted AC compressor handles my impact on my 4runner fine, having duel aluminum air tanks under my bed holds more then enough reserve air to use my impact on all 6 lug nuts and its refilled by the time I switch tires, do agree the ARB compressor wouldn't ever have enough flow
@@static_boltyeah you’d need the ARB to be feeding a tank
It never ceases to amaze me how much of a markup "German" brings in cars and tools.
I think the high prices are due to very high taxes.
@@Bob_Adkins I guess the US has just extreme import taxes, in Germany its just 165€
@@theoldironqueen8224 If I remember correctly, Germany taxes American goods very high, so the US reciprocates.
Lets be honest, those retail prices are nonsense. Retail i can get the Hazet 9012TT around 250, straight from suppliers around 200. And if you have a shop and you tell a Hazet rep/dealer you want to get a bunch of Hazet tools you will get it for a lot less than retail.
And you can use coupons or holiday sales at stores like HF often. Retail is the only way we can compare tools year round and not re-rank our leaderboard daily
I don't understand why your channel hasn't blown up. Such great content.
It's cause he always drains his compressors! Nyuk nyuk nyuk
@@benjaminabel8596 the trick is to install an auto sell drain adaptor
I mean he’s got 200k plus subs and over 100k views. That’s pretty blown up in this category of videos. Some past videos are getting over a million views. He’s huge!!!
My 1/2” impact at work was one that was “broken” I fixed. Lubed it up, & it’s now fully functional, & working great!
I just picked up one of these for $130 at my local harbor freight. Thank you for the valuable information!
Happy holidays! Hope the new year brings you lots of new tools to put through their paces! Can't wait!
Hey it's not all about length! You gotta bring the beans! That's what I've been told anyway!
Great video again, some real shady stuff going on with companies selling the same tool for twice the price.
I'm obsessed with that o-ring that disappeared around the 1:50 mark
Used the exhaust to blow it away
You guys are awesome, you save me time n money when it comes shopping for tools. I'm a bargain shopper when it coming to tools n this channel really helps me alot
I'm glad I checked around about this impact. HF is running a sale and it's knocked down to $100. I have been happy with their stubby 1/2 gun at work, but I need something stronger than that, yet I don't need Thor's kind of power. It's for home use, and looks to be the perfect balance of size and power, and it's really cheap (considering I've been roped into plenty of tool truck tools over the years).
Recently started working as mechanic for the first time, and this was the first impact I picked up. Went with this over the big brother not just to save the extra money, but because the way our shop does routines, we often do tire swaps/rotations with it on the lift, that way we have an easier time measuring tread depth. Because of that, the smaller impact is genuinely easier to manage, as holding a smaller gun over shoulder height to zip the wheels off is easier to manage. A smaller or more compact air impact would probably also work, but for just an all around air tool, this thing is pretty handy.
...It also helps that it only comes in green, which is the one color no other techs in the shop use, so if it goes missing it's easy to see who stole my stuff =3
I work at train cargo car maintenance depo in europe.
For tightening we usually have hevy impact wrenches from company caled würth.
Would be nice to see regular brands compared to würth.
Hazet also made impacts (battery) for a store brand in Canada (Canadian Tire). At least one high torque was Hazet rebranded.
That’s interesting about the Hazet tool, because they‘re usually pretty well regarded here in Germany! Dang! Good find.
Great video as always. Hf is definitely a good buy on some tools. Your videos have definitely helped me make tool chooses.
Thanks for a great year, Torque! Looking forward to your channel hitting 500K next year! 🐺🔧
I might get one of these. And keep my vintage guns in storage.
Price difference is interesting on some of the same tools these days under other brands. Lowes sells a Kobalt 400-ft lb Air Impact Wrench for $49.98 they have sold this for years. At the same store they sell a CRAFTSMAN 0.5-in 400-ft lb Air Impact Wrench for 81.98. They look identical except for name and colors and the $32 markup for the name. I bought the Kobalt one for $40 just a few years ago.
Those Kobalt guns aren’t bad at all! My Matco wasn’t doing the trick and I got out the kobalt I keep as a spare just to see, I’ll be damned if it didnt spin them bolts out.
Thanks, you really do provide a very useful service for people like me that don't have the opportunity to do real world testing like this, but don't want to get cheated at the register.
Notes section on the Hercules says recuded instead of reduced. lol Good info appreciate the time you take to do all of the comparisons! Makes it easy for us to pick good value and good performance.
I bought the green full size last year. Used it to remove some RUSTED salt belt cab and bed mounts. I kick myself in the butt for not doing it sooner! My 30 year old C/P has been retired.
The moment I saw the torque and cfm on this impact I knew I would wait for the red one to come out.
these and the full size impacts are beast, we have a full size thats been on our general service cart for years, weve never put air tool oil in it once and its still going strong.
The Hazet 9012TT is by the way just 165€ (plus taxes, because Americans sometimes list stuff without it) in Germany, Americans just probably get the full import tax and then some.
Ahh good to know, couldn't find anything much lower even on Ebay when making the video.
Back in the eighties, when my auto repair tech career was just getting started, there wasn't anything my IR231 couldn't handle. I've been retired for a little over decade now so I don't know what the deal is with *_needing_* such powerful tools but, it seems like all these tools are just overkill for the sake of bragging rights.
The larger size EARTHQUAKE XT 1/2 in. Composite Air Impact Wrench, Twin Hammer in this video is listed on clearance at 69.97. Going down tomorrow to grab a few clearance items and going to grab one of these EARTHQUAKE XT's the have them, hope they do. Awesome video. Finally got around to subscribing, lol, should have done that long time ago.
I really enjoy watching all your videos here very interesting to learn more about different tools, also I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year when it arrives for yourselves then.
Not surprising that Capri, Harbor Freight, and Tekton (amongst other mid-tier tool retailers) all use a lot of the same sources for manufacturing tools...
We've been seeing this for years...☝️
Do your homework kids...
Thanks again TTC
@@1pcfred I mean, that was a reasonable take 5 years ago
Congratulations on the 250k Torque Test And Channel! Heres for half a mill 🙌
I was thinking on your torque test ranking list you should of course keep the hole list bit also add one that is a list of current available for sale version ( maybe only update the available one a year)
Happy new year everyone
Great content! Well done. those charts are excellent! Well done.
Excellent test, as usual, but still worth the comment. That new HF wrench looks like a really handy physical package with usable performance. The Thor blows it and everything else into the weeds for the same price but a less handy package. There is no magic in physics, the Thor needs the size to make that happen. But I think one of the new HF wrenches will follow me home next time I'm in the neighborhood of their store. For my projects, the HF will have adequate torque and be a lot handier.
That's why you just buy both over time! Along with the new DeWalt mid & high(if not already tied to a battery family)! Gotta have options!
I too ultimately was trying to decide between the Thor and this XT. I ended up choosing (for now!) to buy this one because of the handy size, which is generally a bigger factor in most situations than needing every bean one can get. This XT has good grunt, but is just a joy to use because of the size! A lot less switching tools too! I love the nanos of course when needed, but this XT seems like a great everyday, general use tool for relatively cheap with a coupon!
HF has sold the same product as HAZET before. My 1/2" drive stubby (non XT) is identical to the hazet and the aircat. I even have an aircat boot on it, that fits perfectly. . . because they're made in the same building.
Their performance claims aren't emotional facts. They sell tools based on what they print on those boxes. It was why the channel was made. If the only place in life they get dinged for playing fast and loose with the truth is on our little youtube channel then they're getting off easy. Brands who dont lie to you deserve to be compared favorably. You can still see which tools make more power in the numbers if that's the only concern. We also have a power alone ranking.
Clicking on literally any other youtube channel's video on tools will give someone the read the brochure, congratulate the brand for those numbers without verifying, then give it the driving screws and bolts treatment.
@@TorqueTestChannel Its subjective as to how much value it represents, (to me obviously its value equals zero) so it just reduces the utility of the list. To really use your gathered data one has to re-create the spreadsheet and reformulate without the claims score to see what the data actually pans out to. Power alone leaves out price which is an objective factor. I agree your assessments are the superior ones on YT now, but just think you should delete the formulas factoring in of the claims. Leave the claim and the percentage achieved as an interesting aside, but don't use it to calculate final score.
Not directly related to this video, but earlier today I saw a video about someone making there own weighted socket extension so they wouldn't have to buy several different sizes of weighted sockets and I immediately thought of your videos on them so I wondering if you could do some testing on that in the future.
We tried it early on, loses TQ from being an extension, gains it back for weighted design. Ends up where you left off
All tools should get the Torque Test Channel Certification on numbers they claim. These torque numbers being thrown around nowadays are more peculiar than Bernie Maddof's stock returns lol.
Great impact wrench!!
Thanks TTC and Happy New Year!
Just gotta say it to the world! Got a new m18 mid torque in3/8 drive and it rocks!! Love it..co workers can't believe I got in in that drive size..my response was (you don't a watch the TTC do ya?)...lol thanks guys
Underrated to not cannibalize the larger gun sales? Surely they have much better margins on the older larger one.
Either way, looks like an awesome buy!!! Thanks for the work/data/tech, boys!
I’d like to see you test the Cornwell irc9000. I’ve owned it for 4 years and love it. Broken off the anvil twice tho
Please test available compressors. Different levels would be very useful!!
Would love you guys to try testing some twist sockts aka turbo sockets, bolt biter sockets..really like the flank bite from Astro.ASTRO.. just an idea
Sometimes you just don't want the weight and don't need the busting power of a high torque but need more than a subcompact. I get it. I also don't like to go back and get a bigger tool after trying with one that didn't have enough beans.
I think it’s important to point out that even though the design and specs of certain tools may be shared between companies- the build quality and tolerances can be very different. As a retired Euro car tech I saw that with car parts, but also with things like generators and small engines. Compare knockoff Honda small engines with the real thing and the material quality and tolerances become apparent. Sometimes you’re getting a better tool in terms of longevity even if the performance is similar.
Knock off vs real thing is a bit different than 3 tools all coming off the same factory assembly line advertising the same patented parts
Will we see tests of Raptor and Lithium II guns at some point? Also 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 sq impacts would be cool to see covered.
Please do a video on the new Bauer brushless line of impacts.. just bought a 1/2” because I loved my old brushed 3/8”.. curious how many beans itll make
You know what would be really interesting to watch.: If you took one of those real big 1” air impacts from harbor freight but with the extended anvil and machined the anvil down to a 1/2”. I wonder if it could handle the beans or the anvil would snap.
It wouldn't be fair. Anvils have to be tool hardened through very precise heating and cooling, remachining them by cutting down the surface would destroy that face hardening and all the other metallurgy that went into finishing the anvil.
How much you want to bet that the makers of that impact sold it themselves to Harbor Freight for a steal of a deal. Especially since it just went on sale. They must have some room for profit on a fairly "new" tool. My guess is that Capri & Hazet haven't exactly had orders pouring in for the tool and the manufacturer would really like to sell a few more before stopping production. If we see a Husky version then that's definitely what's happening lol.
There is a viral video floating around about a "MPlus 12v impact" that looks like a kitchen mixer. I'd love to see a video testing it's claims!
I'd be curious to see some of the sunex impacts on the dyno. Thinking about buying the 3/8 stubby in specific and would like to see how many beans it makes
i like the content keep it up. got the siisee or seesii whatever you call it and man its awesome. if it wasn't for that video i would be spending 2 times as much and locking myself into a battery ecosystem again like i did with all the Makita 18v crap now its obsolete aaaand they try to screw you if you replace like 18650's. that amazon brand has dumb battery's so i know ill be able to repair or replace the packs with time unlike the big box brands.
You should test the Earthquake Extended Anvil 20v Xtreme Torque 1/2" and compare it to those..
Sure would be fun to get the actual/tested specs on my very old Allied Pneumatic 67612 1/2" air impact that's done everything I ever needed (home use) and still works great.
I think you would have to send him yours, I'm not sure anyone else is going to be able to find one of those.
@@snoopdogie187 Yup, and not THAT interested, but then again, don't know where they're located/how far away from San Diego. Plus, it's probably 40 years old. Seriously. I had a cheapie 3/8" butterfly impact from the same era, adjustment for power broke but worked great 'til recently when I dropped it and the air inlet/swivel part actually broke off.. :( Found another on Amazon. As I recall, $60 for most. But one for $35 but it couldn't be shipped to CA (wonderful CA). NO idea why, nor how to find out why, but had it shipped outside CA and brought back by someone there.
@@notsevenfeettall I'm willing, but would have to have them let me know how to contact/where to send, and roughly how long it'll be 'til I get it back.
u should test the bosch 12v impacts
I’m quite sure, the Hazet counterpart is not only the same as the earthquake, but as the capri as well
This model looks like a real winner.
Maybe it will last more than 3 months and actually produce its claimed torque
Still waiting for corded 1/2" impact guns. I have a B&D Bulldog from the late 70's early 80's, which is my go to at home. Beats my air tools at 150psi for some reason. I may need to upgrade my tank and hoses to 3/8". But would be interested in seeing comparisons. To me a cord or air hose have the same inconvenience factor. While corded may be more accessible for a lot of folks. Would lend you mine for comparison if you like, I'll pay the freight both ways.
We've tested a new corded and a Japanese IR from the early 90's on here
You should compare Eastwoods 1\2 impact wrench 1000 lbs of break away power ..been using it for about a year and it's still strong
Thank you for another great video.
One comment here, a bit off topic but might be relevant, what air line quick connectors do you guys like? I am in need of replacing all my connections with something new, and would like some good recommendations, that won't break the bank, or not be approved by the CFO/wife. 😁👍 Something that won't leak after a year or so would be good too. Maybe a segment testing air volume thru them, as it would directly affect the torque from the tools.
They use the Milton V type.
The ad timing on this one created interesting mid-sentence cliff-hangers at appropriate times...good job youtube.
Hope you guess text the new Hercules brushless impact driver that's coming soon. Thanks for the content!
Would like to see more hand tool content
Ever thought to try the Earthquake without the muffler on the old and new and see if it makes any difference
Have you seen the replacement half inch drive for a impact t hat has the 1/4 inch female hole for bits like the cordless Bosch impact you previously tested ? The one nobody can explain why it makes more torque using the 1/4 drive adap f er but allows more bits to get used
Hello again Torque Test Channel
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 Question for you. I need a 12 volt cordless impact and drill for work. I am a Aircraft Mechanic so I don't need super high Torque range. Being someone who has worked for some of the most popular brand of tools out there, I will say this on behalf of the marketing team. As a principal electrical engineer, the marketing team is not given the proper engineering support in their marketing specifications! They are left to figure things out for themselves which leaves them at a disadvantage.
The leaders in the engineering teams are of the CEO type where they care about their skin more than the well being of the other teams. So, when you see specifications which dont make sense and dont line up to the tool performance, its speaks to this and to the lack of engineering support to the marketing teams.
I am not speaking for all marketing teams out there but I am making a statement about the company I worked for and their parents companies as well. Their marketing team is left hanging, and the engineers they have cant support them even if they wanted, also, the engineers are not given the freedom to do what is right for the company and end users.
Can you test emtop/total/ingco impact wrenches? They're very popular in asian markets wanna see how well it stands with other brands
That's twisted dude ...
Thank you.
I almost purchased the 1894 although another gen2 is now available claiming more power any chances of an update or should I buy the other ones and send a mule to get your interest.
I will always stand by harbor freight products aside from their lowest tier ones. They're honestly always good value and the OEM products they pick are always decent.
I want to see you review the ACDelco power tools
I'm looking for a cordless half inch impact that kicks ass any ideas ? Good quality , excellent performance and will last and have decent battery life.
Very helpful!
And now its normal price is 99.00. Pretty awesome price for what you get.

That ultra torque sure looks identical to the Milwaukee doesn’t it?
You should do a video on that Mplus amazon impact loads of vids on it
A few years back, AVE did some digging into where Harbor Freight sourced their tools. He found through the same methods that HF was 3rd shifting German tools for their earthquake and Bauer lines. After about 6 months to a year, they would start to reduce quality. But as of late, they seem to have been retaining the original build quality.
You should test out Amazons DOWOX Impacts. The DOWOX RB-806 $119.99 (rated 450ft-lbs) and the DOWOX RB-818 $269.99 (rates 1,300ft-lbs). I would really like to see if these hold up to there claims.
With coupon these are now 79 bucks. Although maybe a bit old now.
mr. torque. i have a mission for you. i have recently aquired a 86 dollar Goodyear air impact wrench set, it came with a rachet, hammer, and wrench. they are probably the worst tools i have ever used in my life, and to put them to shame, i feel like they deserve a spot on your list. i can send my set to you, or just buy one at walmart yourself. either or i think it would make a hilarious video
