Well yes, that must've seemed odd to the rest of the world, but the first Monday in may is a "Bank Holiday" here in the UK so basically a 3-day weekend. Good for attendance figures at the track, not so good for TV ratings around the world, I imagine ;)
Another for the bad idea category: fixing the car setups at equal settings (don't remember which settings were included, but at least aero was) for both European races of that year, of which one was an oval. IIRC teams had to decide on a setup on the oval in Germany and run the same setup at Brands.
I was there. A great day with BTCC as a support race along with the normal BTCC package. Would love to see Indycar return one day. A shame Rockingham has closed I visited those races in 2001 and 2002.
I was there for this and it was a great day. We were in the Desiré Wilson stand and had a great view of the racing - we could see most of the track. The only issue was it seemed to become a fuel saving contest. I agree it would have been interesting to see them race the GP circuit but it was still great to see them on the Indy circuit. Shame they never came back.
The fact they used the Indy circuit is A. Pun-alicious B. Ridiculous, its not even remotely long enough. The GP circuit just about works for modern open wheel cars.
A curiosity about this race (mentioned in the Brazilian transmission) was that the boxes were too small and narrow for the cars of the CART at the time, so much that could be problems if a large number of cars went to the pits in the same return. They did the test, but they did not fit the track ....
Mencionei que durante a transmissão brasileira, falaram que os boxes eram muito pequenos para comportar os carros da Indy. Ia dar um possível congestionamento em caso de muitos carros pararem para abastecimento/troca de pneus. (I mentioned that during the Brazilian broadcast, they said that the boxes were too small to behave in Indy cars. It would give a possible congestion in case many cars stop for fueling / changing tires).
Apparently the GP circuit wasn't used because Champ Car officials demanded that over-hanging trees be cut down. Note that the foot bridge before Druids Bend was removed for the same reason. The Brands Hatch owner was unwilling to cut the trees as it would have destroyed mature trees on the edge of the circuit. It is also noteworthy that the bridge over Pilgrims Drop may have also needed to be heavily modified. It's a shame these changes were not made as CampCar/Indycar may have kept Brands Hatch as a long-term fixture. DTM may have also deemed the GP circuit safe.
TheLondonPhoto mature trees are more worthy than a few races from an extinct race car series. And that's coming from a race car lover. Just saying 🤔😕😐🙂

If I remember correctly this was live on BBC2? and was first time since 1993 that I'd seen it on free to air TV in the UK when ITV had Nigel Mansell's Indycars which was a weekly highlights show. I guess you had it on tape delay on C5 too but we couldn't get that channel.
At that Time Indycar just wasnt ready to Cross swords with F1. But now with the new Design, the sound and the Speed you should come back to europ and kick some asses...
When Sebastian Bourdais let it be known of his talent to the Champ Car series. And started dominating here after. I remember it was expected that Bruno Junqueira step up and fill the void of Christiano Da Matta going to F1, and Bruno was so frustrated time and time again how Sebastian was simply doing things that he couldn't and he couldn't handle it mentally that this newcomer, Sebastian Bourdais, could be better than him haha
Brands Hatch struggles badly with local residents who moved near a 100 year old race circuit being surprised there's noise so they can only use the GP circuit for racing a very restricted number of times a year. Something would have to be kicked out to make room.
If you go to an indycar race every 1st lap of practice and qualifying the cars come in to check exactly what went wrong with Vasser . To check for loose nuts, bolts and parts
@Indy car. Is there anyway you could upload the German 500 they were speaking about? I'm curious to see how Paul Tracy's high downforce setup worked out
This was CART's way of differentiating itself from the IRL back in those days! While the IRL's intent was to be grassroots, homegrown, and basic no-nonsense American, CART's intent was to become more high-profile, exotic, and international and almost rival F1!
I just heard that the other day while catching up on this season of formula E. Franchitti and varsha would be great, however Franchitti is pretty raw when it comes to commentary. That said, he’s a talker, as heard on radio lemans countless times. Thanks for the heads up.
WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY RUN THESE CARS AT THIS TRACK AND NOT HAVE THE FORMULA 1 CONFIGURATION?MY GOD THIS WAS A STUPID IDEA.Wow that was a no brainer. You dont have to wonder why american open wheel will never be as big as formula 1.If i was indy owner i would have a Europa swing of at least 5 races at all the abandoned formula 1 track's.People would go crazy for indycar at portugal, kylami, brands hatch, juarez, etc
"out of the druids corner named after the ancient people who populated this part of southern england & left a lasting impression known as Stonehenge" erm no mate you are so wrong with that. Stonehenge is no where near Brands Hatch they are 110 miles away from each other
The difference between the Americans and the Brits is that the Americans think 100 years is a long time and the Brits think 100 miles is a long distance ;)
... As a Brit I did giggle at this comment. To be fair though, druids did inhabit every part of England - not just west of England where Glastonbury is. And yeah, I suppose to a Brit, 110 miles is quite a long way.. where as over in the United States of A. 110 miles is jus' couple inches on the map..
These cars look so much better than the current, (yet also old) crapwagon Dallara DW12's/18's. Should have taken the Panoz DP01 over the stupid Dallara IR03/07. Way to go, IndyClub! Stagnant hot mess, you are. CART was great, just badly managed, plus Tony George being a whiny little b****, taking his ball, and going home.
Anthony Kernich if they raced the F1 layout it would've been good but pepole who LIVE NEAR A RACETRACK COMPLAIN ABOUT NOISE so they can only have 1 race a year that they run the Gp layout so every other race they have to run the Indy layout
Good idea: Champcar at brands hatch.
Bad idea: holding it on the ironically named indy circuit, unsuitable as it was for modern open wheelers
Agreed. The only time a ~30 sec lap time is acceptable is if it's an oval.
And for a race held on a Monday, the public until it was very good.
Well yes, that must've seemed odd to the rest of the world, but the first Monday in may is a "Bank Holiday" here in the UK so basically a 3-day weekend.
Good for attendance figures at the track, not so good for TV ratings around the world, I imagine ;)
cdname47 Easter monday and Whitsun are also common days to have a race on in some parts of Europe.
Another for the bad idea category: fixing the car setups at equal settings (don't remember which settings were included, but at least aero was) for both European races of that year, of which one was an oval. LMAO Tommy Kendall barfing at the beginning.
Also the CBS Champ Car theme was great.
David Land lmao

Only Ryanair is more creative with their definition of "London"
Brands Hatch is just 5.1 miles from the border and 8 minutes by car.
(Luton. Or as Ryanair calls it, 'London')
@@HighestBanana but 25 miles from Trafalgar Square. Which is what counts.
Well, Road Atlanta is not exactly in Atlanta rather than in Braselton, GA. Roll credits.
... or London Ashford Airport ...
@@GreatCdn59 It's in Lydd, which is actually closer to France than it is to London.
I did not know this was a thing. What a great idea: Great cars at a great track. Even though the long GP layout would have been much better.
@Underbird yes, but at the time we had the dingle dell chicane instead of sheen curve. It was changed for 2004 before ChampCar didn’t return
CART and Champ Car - good times!
such an awful bunch of incompetents running it. no wonder these cars were complete eyesores.
Bring stuff back to England
I hope the 2021 Indy cars share the same proportions, wheelbase, and tire size as these. I love these cars.
Hopefully they will in 2025
I was there. A great day with BTCC as a support race along with the normal BTCC package.
Would love to see Indycar return one day.
A shame Rockingham has closed I visited those races in 2001 and 2002.
What amazing times. Great drivers and all around the world.
Those engines sound great!
They sounded way better before. Limited to 11k RPM in 2003
no, they do not. they sound merely somewhat acceptable.
I was there for this and it was a great day. We were in the Desiré Wilson stand and had a great view of the racing - we could see most of the track. Brands Hatch is a cool race track! I forgot they ran this race, so I know what I'll be watching for the next couple of hours...lol
Awesome circuit - many happy memories racing 750MC F4 single seaters there!
thank you Indycar for posting this race!

Wow, manual gearboxes?!?! Awesome 👏 👏👏
Ah wait, they look like sequential boxes....still, cooler than flappy paddle shifters!

Yeah, I'm glad the owner kept the trees.

it certainly won't be missed.
If they brought this back, it would fit perfectly with the American Speedfest weekend.
I really wish this race in England what’s on NBC sports and NBCSN for the IndyCar series

This video hints on what it'd be like IndyCar uploaded a CART race that CBS televised in 2002.
You wonder if an Indy race is held in the UK these days, if they'd get as many in the seats. Would love to see an Indycar race here!
The two most beloved Brits in indycar sadly passed away. Rest in power, Dan Wheldon and Justin Wilson
If I remember correctly this was live on BBC2? and was first time since 1993 that I'd seen it on free to air TV in the UK when ITV had Nigel Mansell's Indycars which was a weekly highlights show. I guess you had it on tape delay on C5 too but we couldn't get that channel.

That pre-race edm is lit.
Manning did a great job considering he was in the disadvantaged Reynard chassis.
Bring Indycar back to U.K. !
I was there in 2003 with my Dad who was a Marshal. It was freezing cold and so bitterly cold. Fun to see, but too cold!
Why on earth did they not use the GP circuit? That could have been mega.
When Sebastian Bourdais let it be known of his talent to the Champ Car series. And started dominating here after. Unless a European sponsor steps to pay for it, the current IndyCar series probably won't return.
Historic circuit....but sheesh 37 second lap times!
They could use the GP circuit quite easily, would be a longer lap similar to other Indy road courses
Amen to that,i do not know why they used the abbreviated course?
Brands Hatch struggles badly with local residents who moved near a 100 year old race circuit being surprised there's noise so they can only use the GP circuit for racing a very restricted number of times a year.
Something would have to be kicked out to make room.
They need a track where they can pass
Well that was a dumb place to put a development.
If you go to an indycar race every 1st lap of practice and qualifying the cars come in to check exactly what went wrong with Vasser . To check for loose nuts, bolts and parts
If they ever return to Brands Hatch they should schedule a time where they are not violating the noise ordinance so they can use the GP circuit
I was there - please come back to Europe!!
Look at that crowd!
@Indy car. Is there anyway you could upload the German 500 they were speaking about? I'm curious to see how Paul Tracy's high downforce setup worked out
If memory serves me correct, that set up ruined him in the Germany race. He was a lot slower than everyone else.
upload the 2007 race in the netherlands, i've been to that one!

Why doesn’t bob varsha have a job announcing motorsport somewhere? Diffey is decent but bob is a pro...
He does Formula E with Dario Franchitti and some other bloke, would be better if it was just the two of them

Why was it run on a Monday? What day was qualifying ?
Q1 on Saturday, Q2 on Sunday, race on Bank Holiday Monday (May 5, 2003)
Did Tommy Kendall ever drive cars like these?
No
He was too tall basically from what I remember
Did you notice that the bridge is gone .........
Tracy had a bad wheelspin coming out of the pits. Probably blew the engine
I was there that day. It was great to see those cars, but my god the race was boring :(
as expected, with an awful track layout, and cars that raced as badly as this.

Why the chuff are they using the short course? You cant overtake!
especially not in these awful cars.
Noise ordinance

They had to use the small circuit due to a noise ordinance.
