60103 Flying Scotsman Blasts Through Devonport-6/10/2018

- MESSAGE AS OF 24/2/2021:
Since this video has blown up in popularity, I've seen plenty of people saying that it didn't "blast" through, and wanted to clear it up- I am referring to the noise of both locos rather than their speed, as their regulators were wide open creating a massive racket as they went past. Call it an exaggeration if you will, but it was damn loud in person!
In addition, I have more recently noticed a few people questioning the purpose of the yellow line- whilst from the camera's perspective it looks as if I am over it, I was behind it and had my monopod at arms length, less than halfway between the yellow and white lines. Unfortunately this was necessary to get a good shot past the many other people much farther over the yellow line, something I do not condone nor endorse.
From today I will stop respinding to individual comments and will not hesitate to abide by the disclaimer in my channel "About" section.
Original Description:
Another double headed run for Scotsman today, this time to Par. The engine wasn't working hard anywhere else, instead it was pushed, but this section has proven that 60103 can work hard.

My grandfather watched the Flying Scotsman come out of the sheds when she was first built. Wonderful.
Your grandfather is very lucky
My great grand father saw Helen to build scotsman and saw it brand sparkiling new in new condison
I mean helped
Exciting as ever at 74 years of age as it was at 10 , to watch a train pass through . Felt like waving.
When i was a little kid, all i wanted to be was a steam train driver..!!

47 and just like a kid again.
Second that at 76 being a French American naturalized citizen and veteran. Lots of nostalgia looking back at traveling on those trains as a kid.

Trains are magical. I’ve loved them for as long as I can remember. And that’s a long time!
Old but still beautiful and very impressive! Thank you for posting.
This kind of effort makes you one of the most responsible you-tubers......keep the good work going. Viewers sure understand your predicament after reading your thoughtfully worded communication, necessitating abiding by the disclaimer-option. keep the goood work going.....I Love Trains !!!
Thanks very much, I'll do my best! Should be a couple new videos coming soon if you're interested, but once again thank you!
Gorgeous train. Them Brits know how to run steam. Thanks for posting this.
Fake train. I saw TWO engines. FAKE FAKE FAKE.
@@guff9567 shut up
@@matemyballshurt Two engines. Check it out. Fake steam locomotive.
@@guff9567 theyre both old girls, its more for back up, just in-case either of them have problems. And ij this day and age, trains are a lot faster so they need to be able to rely on each other so they dont clog up and delay the rail service
@@guff9567 they are both very real steam locomotives.
I love how they're not going terribly fast, but it sounds like their wheels are pounding the rails!
You shouldn't have to justify your OWN videos and description on your OWN channel to keyboard warriors in abundance who just love to stir up crap regardless. It was great to see UK trains again after a 20 years absence down under. One of the beautiful things about England, train travel, yes, I'll sub for sure 🌼
Firstly, thank you so much for over 1 million views! I never expected this video to get more than 1000, so Im incredibly happy!
Anyway, I've seen plenty of people saying that it didn't "blast" through, and wanted to clear it up- I am referring to the noise of both locos rather than their speed, as their regulators were wide open creating a massive racket as they went past. Call it an exaggeration if you will, but it was damn loud in person, and I felt the title was appropriate
No matter it’s still fabulous, thanks for sharing.
@@bobnewlands Thanks for watching, and more importantly reading the comment- it seems many here are too quick to leave a remark rather than reading it first.
Never mind the trolls. That’s a living, breathing, hard working specimen of old machinery but in mint condition and doing what it was designed for. I would have stepped back as it approached, awestruck as it passed leaving people on the platform in a shroud of smoke and vapour. Poetry in motion, only thing missing was a blow on the whistle as it whirled past. Whereas in "old" lies an understatement considering the complexity of these machines and the high level of skill and knowledge it takes to keep them in tune. A diesel engine is mechanically simpler than the steam engines and easier to run and service. Blessed be the men and women keeping these beautiful, piwerful and purposeful machines alive!
She blasted through as far as I'm concerned.
You're right about the sound, but the loco itself is running very easily and well within its capacity.
If any of you have been that close to steam engines at that speed in person, you realize "blast" is a perfect description. Great video, thx!
It Blasted through for me sir, Thank you for releasing this video
Fabulous video, thanks for sharing. My Dad (died in 1972) went to work in Montréal Canada for at least a decade on trains with steam locomotives Canadian Pacific. His hobby was photography and he would take us all to museums and to see real trains. My mother was assigned to carry his photo bag with all the lenses etc and I was assigned to keep people away from him and from bumping him. This was actually an upsetting task for me because I was about 8 or 9 years old and people wouldn’t listen to me and then my Dad would get mad at me for not doing a better job of “security “.
Your dad seems like he was interesting person 🙄
Memories wow, and sad too , nice story Kath. One of my best memories is when l was a young boy l used to stayed with my Gran & Grandad they lived in Watford just at the end of the road was the train station my first sight of a steam-train close up in reality, l never forget it l was blown away ...not literally lol but probably possible if it was going fast enough as l was a wee lad .
My brother in law was a fireman on Southern Pacific Cab Forwards.
@@toomanyhobbies2011 l bet he had a few interesting stories to tell.

And that diesel loco attached at the end is like a kid looking after his famous grand pa!
My father went from London to Edinburgh on this train in 1944!
More of a stroll through...

Don't waste your time mate. Ask to look at their channel and watch footage they have uploaded fir cockwombles to pick fault with. Nah, they just meander through other dedicated people work and pick fault with. Then they hear mum shouting "meals ready hun"...."Coming,mum"
@@Shagnasty1956 at this point I'm just astonished how many people feel it's necessary to nitpick a video made by (at the time) a 13 year old, way before this channel was even getting 100 views a video
@@StaxRail Seriouzly, i wasn't aware of age. But its impressive. Would they be more impressed if you just hung around outside the local chippy, being a moron? Carry on with
What your doing mate.
@@Shagnasty1956 thanks, I fully intend to carry on. Covid has somewhat restricted me, but this year looks very promising railtour wise
Nothing better than a Gordon & Henry double header!
Steam will never get as old as we do, wonderful to see her running like a top.
this is so amazing to see a vintage train still has that energy...
Love this.. pure raw energy.. feel.. hear... and see the power.. great Scott...👍👍👍💖💖💖
Considering the climb they were coming up it pretty good for having that many coaches and the 47 on back good film as well
Thank you for watching!
Great video thank's very much.
This video sent chills up my spine to watch that gorgeous machine blasting through. Thank you for sharing this.
The train engine coupled behind the Scotsman is an LMS Stanier Class 5 locomotive
Michael Palin's favorite locomotive!
Would that be a”Black Five”. ? Ah yes,I remember them well.Spent many a happy hour at Manchester Victoria (platform eleven) and Exchange( Platform one) watching these very versatile locos when I was a kid.
Used to see it every weekend when I was young, although with less carriages and no rear locomotive, very nostalgic
The kneeling madness seems to spread everywhere! 0:38 😁
@@omi_god It was irony 😉
OH...I just LOVE that 3-cylinder beat...
Love your video. Thank you so much for sharing. It starts my day the good way.
Haters gonna hate. Please don't let the haters stop you. Best wishes from a train lover. Have a lovely day everyone.
Great video !
Maybe it didn't "blast" through,,,,, however it was a "blast" watching it!
Never, have so few, been locomoted, by so many.
But a grand capture and I got a sense of 'event', I was that 3-year old when I saw her on her final scheduled run through Darlington *sniff
Steam locomotive...the CHOO CHOO sound has always been so fascinating ☺️☺️
British steam at its very best, thank you so much for this video …
Wow double steam traction that is something!
Great video. Beautiful train.
Thanks for watching!
God I remember recording this rare but fantastic moment for us here down in the south west wonder if the flying Scotsman will return
Steam still sends shivers down my spine 💥
My father worked for the L.N.E.R. We lived near to the railway engine sheds at. East Ardsley. On his day off during my school holidays he often took me to the sheds where they cleaned locomotives, he would help them by driving the engines up to a turntable to get cleaned. He would lift me up onto the footplate of the one just cleaned and
Drive to a parking spot, I remember being on the Flying Scotsman, but the one I liked best was The Silver Fox.
Wonderful memory, thx for sharing.
What a glorious train. It wasn't blasting through in terms of speed, but dear lord does the sound of her passing the station was magnificent!
Cannot beat that sound! I have seen the smaller of Union Pacific's compound locos. And grew up in the Midwest with several "old timers" that participated in antique agriculture equipment. Those old steam tractors were great to see operate. If you want to see both steam tractors and locos, go to the Old Threshers Reunion at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa during Labor Day weekend. Plenty to see of so many different things. Or at least it was thirty years ago when I moved away.
@@ronfullerton3162 The sound of Big Boy is also magnificent
@@GeneralLiuofBoston1911 I can only imagine. Am hoping I am paying attention better to it's travels this year.
I'm showing my age, but, I was more excited by the Class 47 😄
That was a special Diesel Loco over 500 built but a rare sight now on UK networks being replaced by 66's, 60's. Use to have 47 operate XC services from Bournemouth - Birmingham NS and then for rest of journey to Preston / Glasgow operate by electric loco such as 86, 87 (post 1974).
Why? How old are you
When it’s at the end of it’s life, it would be incredible if it went through the Chunnel and did a big Europe tour
I was onboard! Second coach in at the back, you can't see me in the video but it was a day to remember
Really cool. I’m so glad that a pretty good number of these old, beautiful locomotives are still around.
I a was a fireman in the fifties for British rail I wish I was still working on steam engines never forget....Brian Morris bolton sheds
amazing video of such an amazing locomotive. I just want to say though that as an American i would love to see her in person but i also think they should give her back her 4472 numbering
You might find this link really interesting...
www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/objects-and-stories/history-flying-scotsman
It gives a lot of info about the Loco and it's number. 1472 was it's original number, 4472 was it's second number and only held for about 24 years, it was changed to 60103 in 1948 so it's held that number longer than any other (72 years). So for historical acuracy, if it were to be re-numbered 'again' it should be 1472. Like many other Brit's we have always known it as 60103 and don't really go with the obsession about 4472.
It seems to have become more of a topic since the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express appeared, with many people incorrectly assuming it was the Flying Scotsman used in the film. It was not the Hogwarts Express.
'Wah wah don't burn coal', they say. Coal provides sights like this
I remember as a kid sitting on the railway bank, just south of Stevenage old station, watching the last scheduled service of the flying Scotsman at 10:24. The place was crowded.
These lovely machines are a treat to watch , whatever your age be . It brings the child in you - you tend to recollect lovely memories of your childhood travel with your loved ones . It's just reliving those awesome moments . Cheers .
Lovely video of the flying scotsman train I have always wanted to see the flying scotsman for real life 🙂🙂👍👍
Very nice.
The fellow standard on the edge obviously knew what he was doing, has is phone/camera in vertical position, as all photographers know verticals give you the full scene!
I can never understand why people use portrait mode when photographing anything other than portraits.
Just as thrilling as seeing the restored Big Boy 4014 return to the rails! Thanks for posting!
Have failed to catch it, even though I live just a few miles from their track. Have seen it's little brother though. That alone was grand. The sounds are something else. They stopped to lubricate, and hearing it start out and pull away gaining speed was awesome.
In 1988/89 The Flying Scotsman toured Australia, during the course of which a World record non-stop run for steam was achieved of 422 miles from Parkes to Broken Hill in New South Wales ( Equivalent to Inverness to Bristol)
Yes I stood next to track with my two baby children just south of Sydney somewhere as it blasted past us at speed Will never forget that day Cheers
I don't give a damn about what is considered "blasting"! Double headed steam and a bunch of coaches, downright impressive!
2 steam engines + a Diesel just in case. Lovely to see it working. I remember seeing it in York back in 1979.
Good quality steady picture!
Thanks! I invested in a monopod a while ago, and it has sure made a difference. If you want more, please consider subscribing
That was really cool! I wish we had more steam up here on the north shore of the US of A, mostly NKP 765, but not for awhile. The exhaust sounds like a 4 cyl, whomever set the valves knows his craft! My hats off to you Brits. for preserving and continuing to use these treasures!
Beautiful video of a beautiful train! It's so good to see a steam train still operating.
That was a shame they stuck that big ugly Diesel locomotive right on back end ...you could clearly see it as it went through the station .
Good job a train wasn't coming the other way, stand back behind the yellow line!
There's always some berk gets right in front of the camera. Every time guaranteed.
Prefer twat myself...
Yep, if everyone stood behind the yellow line all would get a great vid and pics.
Must be nice to take a photo of it, as it steams through the station.
As a joungstrer in the late 50s I be a Doncaster train station to see the sir Nigel gresley blast through and the Scotsman... My, what memories
Yeah, it sounds like its going faster than it is. But.....double-headed, and a diesel "DPU" as well on the end! (DPU is short for distributed power unit in USA)
One individual has pressed "Dislike". I love that. The title was that the Flying Scotsman Blasts through Devonport. Ok, what didn't they like? It was definitely the Flying Scotsman. Check. It was definitely Flying. Check. It was more than likely Devonport. Check. So what did they expect? The old girl doing 1555 MPH? Pink coaches? 4 dozen coaches? Yellow wheels? Fireman hanging out of the cab with Skull and Crossbones? About the only thing not to like was the whistle, which ain't no Gresley Chime! Next time, please title it, "Locomotive "Sir Lancelot" going backwards through Accrington being chased by a Wasp at Midnight!" At least it'll give 'em grounds for complaint!!!!
Haha, it certainly is funny when an armchair expert starts waggling their fingers! Thanks for the comment, made me smile!
@@StaxRail your wish is my command!!!! By the way, I am an expert, but only by the definition that ex means has-been and a spurt is a drip under pressure!!!!!
Dafydd,
It definitely was NOT flying.
All the wheels were firmly on the rails.
Very cool. I thought everybody might applaud actually 😃 I was surprised at all the passenger carriages!!
A beautiful locomotive from an amazing era of travel
You perhaps failed to notice that there were two locomotives on that train, but hey ho.
I understand your feeling too like thise lovely days. now every thing modernised and replace those beautiful looks people as well as things. now every where covid19 fear we lost most of our yadien
Bring back steam. We don't need high speed. Greener steam trains can be run using electric just like the kettle in your kitchen. Nostalgic Britain. Let's try it for 3 years while they psss about with hs2.
The good ol days.
Nothing today comes close.
Speed yes but that’s it.
The Flying Scotsman run along some of Melbourne's rail lines back in the 1980s. Melbourne Victoria is the birthplace of railways in the southern hemisphere so it was fitting that The Flying Scotsman ran on Melbourne's lines.
That was refreshing!
None of the people standing there, saw the Flying Scotsman passing in real! All of them watched it on their phone screen!!
Yeah cunts the whole bloody lot of them
Beautiful thanks!
Thanks. Great to watch (and hear)
The action starts at 40 seconds!
Even though its not full speed, it's just magnificent to see these iron horses rock on the rails yknow.
What a scenic place!
I feel cheated, I thought I was going to see a Scotsman in Kilts flying by!
Its double heading with black 5, my favorite train!
Those people on the platform edge taking pictures, would have been totally shocked had something been coming the other way.
Definitely, it's a massive problem when Flying Scotsman is out and about, but unfortunately many normal people don't realise the danger they are putting themselves into, as well as potentially jeopardising the railtour industry
One of the greatest ever British masterpiece.
Thank you whoever posted these images, time passes but the magic of the flying Scotsman does not diminish; if anything it grows, a lot a lot a lot................
I suppose it comes down to what type of steam train you have been used to. If you want to hear some seriously loud noise from a steam engine, check out one of the many videos of the legendary Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy", the largest, fastest and heaviest locomotive ever made. It was built in 1941 and 1944 to haul extra heavy loads through the Wasatch Mountain range between Wyoming and Utah, USA. It was 132 feet long with coal tender, weighed in at 1,200,000 pounds and was capable of 80 mph. Its whistle alone let you know that something massive was headed your way. I have to chuckle as the whistles on most European steam trains sound like they belong on a child's toy. There were 25 of these monsters built and they were taken off the line in 1959 when diesel electrics arrived. The Union Pacific RR rebuilt one and it currently makes tours through some U.S. towns to the delight of everyone, especially the few left that remember seeing and hearing it live, many years ago. Each one of its 16 huge drive wheels were just under 6 feet in diameter and weighed 20,000 pounds each! She truly was a beast of the rails.
No matter how old, it is moving down the track on schedule
This is awsome dude
Grand old Dame. Stunning
What a beautiful sight.
I wish I could reach out across the screen to turn that phone horizontally so he can film in landscape mode. smh
These old locomotives remind me of The Little Engine That Could cartoon 😁
Gazelle: i wish if Flying Scotsman arrived to Zootopia
The Flying Scotsman was a name given to my dad, well he was Scottish and he was a pilot. =)
Brilliant! Thanks for watching
And occasionally he let off some steam and made a little toot??
I bet the engine in the back is scotman's brother gordon!
Absolutely lovely, but honestly, that whistle is every bit as pathetic as the one on my Mamod steam engine.
Agreed! Thanks for watching
Roger King. As an ex railway man I couldn't agree more about Flying Scotsman's pathetic LNER whistle.
If you suggested changing it the reply would be, "it would not be original." Well, neither is the smoke deflectors, double blast pipe and double chimney.
The most famous train the world will ever see. Still as magnificent as ever.
Am I Indian I enjoyed seeing it too, those days a bit different around 1970s my Childhood days, the steam train looks so natural beautiful and the best smell of steam, coal burning and its sounds so much linked to our lives, those days beauty looks is hard to find in modernized trains, hard to compare this sound of train and its looks, which was part of our life
There is always something majestic about steam locomotives!
The Flying ScotsMEN.. there were two of em'' and a diesel pushing from behind.
Ish. Only the leading loco is named "Flying Scotsman", the second steam engine is 44871 and I can't remember the diesels number, but there's only one Scotsman
Skip to 1:02. Thank me later.
It was never going to blast though because of the speed limit it has just encountered on the Saltash bridge , but still an awesome sight and sound as they pick up speed
It’s on the down line from Plymouth.
That is some next gen steam physics right there
Everyone holding phones, missing the actual moment, not one wave 😕
I enjoyed watching your video very much but where is it, please mention. I'm sure it's somewhere out of India although the station looks very much like a station in india, only it is more clean & clear but nowadays many of the stations, both junctions & comparatively the smaller ones remain so. Thank you. I like to see them and enjoy traveling by train very much. Thank you so much.
Hi, glad to hear you enjoyed the video! This is Devonport station, located in Plymouth, United Kingdom. Hope that helps
And that's why you always move as far up the platform as the shot will allow. So you don't have people getting in the way of your camera.
