Thanks for making this video, I had an inconclusive polygraph for a law enforcement agency. The tester even asked me if I had researched how to pass. I was kind of offended, especially since I followed ALL of the instructions correctly.
Anyway thank you for taking time out of your day to make this video.

@ethanelliottsutton it's just the most truthful points of the word inconclusive.
Also, I'm not known for being subtle

I took my polygraph did not lie and once it’s over the examiner tells me he thinks I am using countermeasures. I tell him I’m not he continues to ask me what I am doing and he is sure I looked up countermeasures and should tell him so he can help me get another chance. This happens after he left me in the room for about 15min comes back says him and his supervisor are sure I cheated in someway. He continues to tell me I purposefully changed my physiology even though I have never heard the word prior to meeting him. Just got the letter three weeks later I’m disqualified due to the polygraph.

I just did my police polygraph - I personally felt like my polygrapher was trying to show me how smart he was or how he knew every trick in the book and so i better not try to trick the system. The entire time he was trying to play mind games and get me to confess to something that is nonexistent.
My answers never changed they never would so i wasnt worried just normal trying to get through it all. And he told me my first set of questions would be a fail because my breathing was to calm and spaced out so he felt i was holding my breath but im being recorded by 2 cameras. I was just breathing normal so he actually told me to breathe more hahaha and then at the end was just extremely dismissive. He said well ill get these looked at and we will see what happens maybe youll get a call in a week or two.
The whole experience was weird i had never done one before so now im just in my head wondering what the hell just happened haha

I'm sorry to hear you felt you weren't treated well. Truly, I am.
Every examiner takes a different approach with pretest. When I first started out, I'll admit it, I was a raging jerk. I was just out of polygraph school and, well, some people come out like that.
My intern instructor showed me a different way. As the years went by, that advice worked out well.
The problem is, it's hard to have a pretest without coming out looking like you're a wee arrogant.
I like to use humor to kinda level that out though.
All examiners have a small countermeasure speech. I have one too, but I tell people that countermeasures makes it hard for me to help you in the end. I try to stay away from being accusatory with that, unless I see countermeasures.
As far as the issues the examiner pointed out, I can't see the charts so I can't judge.
In my experience? Some extra nervous people tend to do unintentional labored breathing on their first polygraph.
That is something the examiner needs to kindly take care of in-between charts.
Of course the experience was weird. Being attached to an instrument to verify the truth or "catch a lie" is not a normal human thing to do.
Most examiners would've taken time to walk you through the process more carefully. Sometimes a bit of kindness goes a long way.
I hope your next one goes better for you.

@joepolygraph I appreciate it a lot! That all makes sense, I definitely agree with the nerves part. It is an awkward thing to go through regardless. But thank you for the tips and advice, I'm sure I also am in my head a little just overthinking cause the job is important to me.
      Thank you

@ninjalobo7 I'm glad to hear my words have helped.
I can honestly say, most examiners want to help you pass. Some examiners just have different personalities, just like anyone else.
Take it all in one step at a time, tell the truth, even if it hurts, then stand by the truth.
You'll be ok. Just whatever you do, don't read too deep into things.
If you're a person of good character, which I have no reason to doubt that you are, you'll get to where you want to go.

Crazy how movement can fail. If a reaction happens when you ask a question about a serious crime do you stop the polygraph and ask them about it?

    • @joepolygraph
      @joepolygraph  Рік тому

I wanted to rewrite my response to this.
I can't tell if you're saying that moving during your polygraph can fail to help someone beat a test, or, movements can cause a failed result. Clarification on that would be great to give you the best input.
As far as the rest of your question, if we see reaction that meets the criteria taught in APA approved training, no we do not stop the chart.
The chart continues through the series of questions that were reviewed with the exmainee. Once we get to the end of the question list, we stop the instrument, give the exminee a few moments to rest and start chart 2. Always the same questions, possibly in a different order. When that same list of reviewed questions are done, we shut down the instrument, give the examinee a few moments, then start chart 3. Same questions, possibly different order.
Sometimes, if more data is needed to make a call to one direction or another, a 4th chart might be collected. The 4th chart is often a good way, in my experience, to aviod the hated word "inconclusive."
Sadly, some people won't do a 4th chart because time is money, and, inconclusive means retest, retest means more money.
Anyway, I can see why someone might think that we see reaction and shut things down to start grilling.
TV and movies have a way about giving people crazy ideas about how things happen in a polygraph room.
That too might make for a good subject on a future video.
There, I like this response better.
I really hope you clarify the movement comment. I'd like to give a better answer about that.

Hey joe I just took my police polygraph and it came back inconclusive I didn’t lie at all
I never did drugs or anything it was really cold in the room but I told the truth it was yes and no questions

It's summer and I do know some examiners that do like to keep their rooms like a meat locker. Lol.
If you were shivering uncontrollably, I can see where that might make for some sloppy tracings.
Having said that, there must have been something in the tracings that pointed to drugs.
When I see something like that, I will not only ask in post test about you doing drugs, but I will also ask if you were thinking anything when I asked about drugs.
Were you at a concert or party where drugs were passed around?
Was a close friend or family member doing drugs around you at some point?
Was someone close to you addicted to drugs where their addiction was problematic for you?
If any of those answers were, yes, I'd document it and set up a follow-up test to clear the issue or confirm there is a bigger problem than what you told me about.
That's how I handle those situations, other examiners deal with that stuff differently.
Of your department offers a follow-up test, best advice I can give ya is dress in warmer clothing, be totally honest about what you're thinking about with drugs. If there is an outside issue, tell the examiner.
I wish I could help you more, but without seeing the charts, I don't know what happened during chart acquisition.
I do hope this was helpful on some small level, as I want to be hear to give people good and helpful helpful information that is fair, independent, and unbiased.

@kenonewton416 it happens man. Bring something warm to prep. Remember to tell him anything you're thinking.
If he/she is a good examiner, he/she wants you to pass.

I understand you present yourself as an honest individual and I applaud you for the amount of integrity you do have... but any individual that presents a polygraph test as legitimate in ANY capacity is being dishonest. It's not that the polygraph industry is shady, it's that the polygraph itself is a scam and pseudoscience. You used phrases like "desired result." Any test where the answer depends on the personal desire of the examiner is bullshit. If I look at a thermometer, my personal desire is irrelevant. The thermometer tells me what the temperature is, how I personally feel about the answer is irrelevant and has ZERO effect on the answer. Lying is not a physical action outside of you moving your mouth. Lying is a mental, and or spiritual action. The action occurs in the mind. If a polygraph was TRULY a lie detector test, it wouldn't matter matter if you did backflips and cartwheels while being tested. It wouldn't matter if you breath hard or irregularly, or if you tap your finger and foot. If I get my blood tested to find out my blood type, the answer is not going to change if I move sporadically and breathe hard whil spinning in a circle, the answer is not going to change based on the doctors desired results. The fact is a polygraph only tests for nervousness, anxiety, and movement and ABSOLUTELY nothing more. The chart tells you there was a change in the body, and then you decide whether they were lying or not based on OPINION and PERSONAL DESIRE. While you do seem to have integrity, any person who present a polygraph as legit is being untruthful, and is lying on purpose.

    • @isaiah7979
      @isaiah7979 Рік тому +2

In short, the result of a polygraph is whatever the examiner WANTS it to be. It literally has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the person is lying.

    • @joepolygraph
      @joepolygraph  Рік тому +1

On one hand you say I seem like a man of integrity, and on the other, you say I'm a liar by offering the product at all.
I'm not here to argue the validity of polygraph. I could, but I've found over the years, to do so results in the same end as a dog chasing a car.
I've also learned that entertaining people looking to pick a fight on line solves nothing for either party.
Your message does give me a good idea for a future video.
Thanks for your kind but srill mixed message. It is just as valuable as a pro polygraph message would have been.
Sorry I won't give you the argument I think you might have been picking for. Might I point out to you that antipolygraph.org might be a better place.
There are always examiners trolling there looking for some fun.
Me, I walked that road before, and the bickering only serves my doctor in finding new blood pressure meds to work for me.
I wish you the best, and remember, Jesus loves you.
