  • Can you believe it's been three years since I started this espalier Belgian fence grown from 'Royal Raindrops' crabapples? It's looking great but there's a bit of maintenance to be done.

Omg they're 'feeder fish'! Its in the name people 😅 The fact that Erins have the whole summer instead of being gobbled up in someone's prize fishtank is a bonus imo lmao. Btw, the espalier is gorgeous. Thank you for the update. I watched that episode and was shocked when you said its been 3 years!

I watch for a glimpse of the Belgian fence anytime you’re in that general area of the garden. I have loved seeing it grow, and chuckle every time I remember you needing to drink before you pruned the trees. You were so brave!

As you probably know, espalier is noted to have started in Roman times. The word Belgian goes back to the 1620s. Espalier became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. So, take your best shot at guessing when the term Belgian was attached to the cross hatch style of espalier. I think it's easier just to accept the fact that it's one of the six best known espalier designs. P.S. Erin yours is just beautiful, and it's been a pleasure to watch it come along from the time that you first created it.

This video tells me I’ve been following you for three years. I was looking for videos that would show me how to espalier. When you had that gin and tonic before you cut the whips, I said to myself, “that’s the gardener for me”. I ended up doing an espalier of 5 Pyracantha on a structure along my driveway. It’s been very successful and I get a lot of comments especially when the berries turn orange in the fall. It’s a great project for a gardener who loves to prune.

My not so local garden center sells bare root trees in the spring, I am planning on getting some bare root fruit trees and will be turning them into espalier trees.
I spent the summer fighting the invasive weeds and spent the fall preparing the area for my future mini orchard. I have always wanted fruit trees but never had the sun or space. We cut down all but the biggest tree in the backyard and so now I have the sun and I discovered espalier and realized now I don't need the space for 15 foot trees, I can just keep them small!
I want apple, pear and peach trees for sure.
I got a bare root crabapple from this garden center last year and I love it, its done so well, I hope my fruit trees will be the same.

18:40 I was also surprised to hear Erin say that you can’t use it on edible plants! As far as I can tell, and I just looked it up, it is safe for use on edible fruits and vegetables, I’m referring specifically to the Espoma brand, called Captain Jack’s Copper Fungicide. That’s what I’ve used the past few years on my fruit trees. It’s also approved for organic gardening.
