Remember when Corrosive was simply the best dmg type because it was the only armor shred we had before Slash procs got buffed?
Slash procs must've been buffed before I started playing in 2015 then, because they only got nerfed to not ignore shields.
@@FrogOnAHorse wasn't so much a nerf more as specializing. They made it so that slash was to armour as toxin was to shields. It was seen as too over-powered to completely ignore shields with no only toxin but also slash. So they buffed slash to act like toxin to armour instead where it does true dmg ignoring armour dmg red
@@Aeririn slash already ignored armor before that. the only thing that changed with slash is that viral got buffed to the sky. slash was only nerfed to not bypass shields, there was no direct buff to slash
@@Aeririn I also suspect that one of the big reasons why they made this change was because of new players receiving slash procs from nearly every enemy in the game. Taking damage that bypasses your only source of regenerating HP was really annoying without any reliable healing sources, which are few and far between when starting out.
Or heat stripping armor.
Or viral just outright boosting damage by absurd amounts.
...Yeah, Corrosive went from god-tier proc to shit-tier.

@@alexanderkevwitch5801 Ah, one of Layzar's disciples I see ;) .
Maybe one day he'll read the comments/wiki and stop telling new players that Deimos enemies are immune to viral (though the 4 apex enemies/mechs that were, have now grown to 6).
@@TheArcSet true, though many, MANY players still believe they're immune even to this day. To the point that any google search leads to dozens of reddit posts about how Viral is useless because everything is immune and that Corrosive/Heat is the only way to go.
Leyzar isn't the only one who's got it wrong since it changed, but most of the community. Pretty sure there's a (most likely outdated by now) video from Kengineer that says the same thing.

Magnetic should be able to nullify enemies! Or at least pull them towards each other. Blast should do an actual explosion in a small area that does damage proportional to the enemies health. But nah, I’m sure DE should just leave these status procs and not do anything interesting with them :(

@@mentlegen3887 i would REALLY love to see magnetic pulling enemies together! thats an awesome idea!
Magnetic should nullify nullifiers that would be good.
gas is almost as good as toxin as a status specially if you are grouping enemies and using breach surge on your warframe, but be advised, the amount of particles can either blind you or burn your PC so be sure you have low effects settings or you dont have a toaster for a PC if you want to try it. 1. A fresh perspective on Warframe (coming back to the grind from almost 2 years of not playing)
2. Well structured content that prefaces the question, lays facts, and answers follow-up questions as the viewer thinks of them
Thank you for this type of content. This is a well thought-out approach to practical problems and helps a lot with understanding key concepts. Even the boiled down version at the end, it's like a solid chunk of pure gold after refining everything.
Viral = general purpose
Corrosive = specific types.
Corrosive = grineer
@@terciofelipeoliveirafrance2228 if you watched the video you'd know that wasn't true
Surprising how viral heat combo isn't even mentioned once in this video. Viral slash is the got to but not all weapons proc slash reliably so heat is a substitute to reduce 50% of armor with a single proc.
You forgot heat also does tik damage per sec as long as heat proc. Is active.🤨🤔🧐
Well reasons might be is that heat doesn’t bypass armor like slash does and primary weapons do have hunter munitions completely removing the need for high slash and statues if none at all.
But wanna be stupid go viral, slash, and heat. It’s just crazy stupid how powerful those 3 are together.
@@ForestX77 Got a 200% primary crit chance invig on trinity. Overall 85% crit chance makes the ignis wraith set up with viral and hunter munitions just stupid. Ofc 250% damage on a kuva nukor secondary is even more comically overpowered.
Viral Ignis Wraith let's go! :D
I love my baza prime I run viral and damage on a rivin I got so I can run viral at all times I get radiation corrosive viral blast all sorts of mixes of the 2 and my viral heat with hunter munitions literally slays say hard it's not even okay at all
This is why I like the phage, one of the few weapons that can apply viral, corrosive and heat for insane debuffs
Got a riven for it if you want 4 free
@@yeageri4168 u on PS4?
But muh slash :(
There's a few more now as well.
For melee you have the Pathocyst, which is surprisingly not bad with how glaives work now, if you've a riven for it; the Plague Zaw's, Pulmonars and Keratinos for viral, and the Caustacyst for corrosive.
For secondaries, there's the Kompressa for viral which has innate multishot and decent status to start with, and then the Tysis, and the Catabolyst, which is quite a nasty weapon... (and technically the Stug, but...)
And finally, primaries you have the Phage as mentioned, which is a status monster, but also the Synapse, which has exceptionally good critical stats, so can make for a nasty Corrosive/Viral/Munitions build. Also the Hema which I never really loved, but the Proboscis Cernos is positively ludicrous with it's viral explosion and the ability to tick multiple status effects on the tether prior the detonation.
Hilariously good weapon, though I kinda wish it had innate viral instead of corrosive, so you could build corrosive to get max impact from the innate armor bypass after building up a bunch of viral on a tough target. Either way, still great.
There's a lot of really fun weapons now that can lean into a mix of pretty crazy status effects.
@@Avoncarstien I’m late to the party but Grendel’s subsumable nourish exists for free viral procs for all weapons (not sure about melee actually) and energy regen.

Been trying to explain this to a few of clanmates...
Started Warframe back in 2014 and have been playing on and off for the last several years. Last time I played Warframe for a long period of time, Corrosive was just the go to thing for everything so my knowledge is super outdated LOL. This video and the overview of all the elements video have been such a great help. Really, I've been watching a lot of your videos lately so thank you for making in-depth videos on all these topics. It has helped me out a lot as a returning player.
This is why I love weapons like the synapse and the scourge. Corrosive + Viral = pure destruction.
"*armor*"
Me who play with abating link trinity: ok guess ill play viral
2,000 hours in and i found this video helpful🤙💪
Me too, 4k in game hours and this video teach me 1 or 2 things more
i have 3,7k hours in the game and never get how armor scaling on enemies work lmao
13 hours left till I hit 5k, still taking that cheat sheet with me
this is exactly why i think that the weapons with innate viral are becoming super OP. Since you only really need to proc viral once to be most efficient, by building corrosive and heat on a weapon that has innate viral damage you have godly results against any faction in the game pretty much. Great informative video!
ye but stacking status also gives diminishing returns...there is no reason to it.
@@yarugatyger1603 that is true but i have been using the komorex recently and its super underrated. The innate viral makes it a hell of a weapon. From testing against 160 level steel path factions, I really saw how big of a difference that innate viral proc does compared to other weapons that would normally deal more damage but they lack this small yet important feature.
On the other side i think if u go for a slash build the innate viral wont matter at all
Except that the proc ratio will make it very hard to proc viral at all unless you have very high fire rate, attack speed or a forced viral proc. Take the plague zaws for example. With just primed pressure point (or CO) and 2 elemental mods for corrosive you have almost 8x more corrosive damage than viral, which means on each status chance occurrence corrosive is 8x more likely to proc over viral. Even puncture proc will be higher since you have more puncture damage than innate viral.
@@FiveN9ne that's why you use weeping wounds. Easy way to get over 300% status chance. Even if it's 8x more likely proc, if you proc 3+ status per hit then it balances out much more nicely. Especially so if using a CO build
@@Aeririn Yea you can't get that much status, idk where you pulled that number from. Weeping wounds is 440% status chance at max combo. Even if your weapon has base 30% status you reach 160% status chance. And most weapons don't have even that much. Procing more status also means you will just proc more of the dominant element, not that it evens out somehow, that's not how probability works.
Thank you so much for this video. I just begun the steel path and was so confused why my corrosive builds felt like they werent doing jack to anyone.
Viral and Corrosive: *Fight each other to decide who's the best*
Meanwhile Gas: *Casually eat the snacks in the corner*
If Warframe has an exam I will be ready for it.
I think the change to heat, giving it some armor strip potential while being more easily stackable with viral, is also a major factor in corrosive falling behind. Plus heat excels in a lot of the situations where viral falls behind, as well.
Wait until we got Corrupted Heavy Nox and we gonna have nightmares.
For me this Corrupt heavy gunner being the tankiest of all greneers was aways weird af to say the least.
It's very skinny and tall, and that's it...
Unless they have resistance to headshots, they won't be much of a problem tbh. Crack open that helmet and they will drop faster than a heavy gunner.
Corrupted units have the same stats as normal units. So Heavy gunner = Corrupted Heavy Gunner. The difference is in which faction mod does bonus damage. Also Bombards are harder to kill with a corrosive setup than a Heavy Gunner (due to different armor type)
@@Vincrand This is not true. Corrupted heavy gunners have higher base hp than all the other heavy gunners 700 vs 300, check in simulacrum before you spawn them. They have same armor but when you consider health their ehp is higher. The tankiest units in the game are manic bombard eximus, but they practically don't exist in regular gameplay so they're irrelevant. People should test builds against bombards/napalms instead of gunners.
@@FiveN9ne I stand corrected. Personally I always do a test run against 12 heavy gunners and 8 bombards at the highest level that is available to me (currently 150). If I die without playing bad, than the build isn't for me. I also use Corpus units, but only for weapons I intend to use only against Corpus.
@@Vincrand For Corpus, maybe Cinder Machinists are the strongest ones but also not common, Corpus Tech probably the best choice, but they die so easily the test barely reveals anything
I'm glad my frost avalanche build with viral/shock amprex still seems to work great after all this time.

I recently came back to Warframe from a 6-month break this was a nice update to info and confirmed what a few others were telling me, thx for the video.
Saryn overkills with those spores and viral is deadly. She's is the queen of carnage and I love it!!!
Thank you so much for putting this together. The damage types and status effects are hard to keep track of but this video makes it easy.

This is absolutely helpful, and is easy to understand! Props to you man.. thanks for making this!
I gotta watch all your vids in order to understand Warframe more.
There’s still some things which I can’t kill fast or at all so we’ll time to look through all your vids
Typically I've used viral fire as a method of reducing armor while damaging a target. Curious too see how that compares too viral slash
i mean lots of weapons can do all 3. viral heat and slash
@@stuff4812 never optimal tho since you usually waits mods slots on useful utility or essential damage mods
this was so long ago now but in all honestly wasted mod slot or not the difference isnt that big when comparing to what your using the weapon against. unless your trying to get away with using a mediocre weapon everything will die very fast regardless
@@stuff4812 with the advent of primary and secondary arcanes, basically everything except the new Eximus, Thrax, and Steel Path enemies go down without much effort. I do love the fact that heat procs stack damage indefinitely though, which can make them something of an alternative to slash for weapons like the Nukor or Cycron that have great stats but no way to access slash.
Honestly given the way heat works, I'm curious how heat vs slash in terms of damage works out. Heat will inevitably win out at *some* level of procs, given the target has near infinite health and near infinite armor, but heat's stacking vs slash's true damage would be something interesting to plot on various levels of armor.
the mathematical approach to this deserves huge tons of appreciation! Brilliant content!!!
Something else important to consider is the existence of Heat procs. I normally am able to fit three elemental mods onto weapons and by putting Heat on with Viral, it creates a pretty good combo. Heat procs reduce armor on the first stack and each stack deals damage over time, meaning that it acts as somewhat of a mini corrosive proc as well as adding some DoT. Heat procs therefore help Viral weapons get through armor while Viral procs amplify the damage of Heat procs. At this point, most of my weapons use this Viral + Heat combo and it works pretty well.
Such a great video, mad props!

I WILL EMBRACE YOU MATHFRAME.
*Sad cry reminiscing high school*
I've just come back to WF since about 2018. Looking into my builds I had a lot of corrosive and viral. I think I'm going to lean a bit harder to viral now. Thank you for this video I feel enlightened and vindicated towards my friend who swears that using viral vs. Grineer at any level is a waste of time and stupid lol.
Something to note, grineer missions on earth, mars, and uranus all have lancers with ferrite armour
It's important to note that the relationship between Viral and Corrosive gets even more complicated once you add Heat to the mix. As Heat is straight up one of the most powerful elements, what with being an ever-increasing dot tick as well as stripping 50% of armour over one second following initial application, it benefits massively both from armour getting stripped, as well as the bonus damage multiplier from viral. It innately helps itself with its own armour strip functionality, but Corrosive only makes it more potent, while Heat also makes Corrosive more potent as well.
Now, this might not mean a whole lot if a decent portion of your weapon's damage isn't purely corrosive, as is the case with a good deal of your standard loadout, but there's a small number of them.
For example, if you're using Excalibur's Chromatic Blade augment and literally all of your damage is Corrosive/Heat, and you're looking at 10 procs of Corrosive status and 1 proc of Heat status, then *97.5%* of ferrite armour has vanished from Corrosive damage calculations. A level 180 Corrupted Heavy Gunner is basically tissue paper at that point, and is honestly likely to be dead long before you even apply all 10 stacks of corrosive.
Obviously this is less effective against Alloy armour, but 90% armour stripping ain't too shabby regardless -- while viral/heat will kill bombards faster, corrosive/heat will kill heavy gunners WAY faster, and maybe it's just me but I feel like I see those more often, on top a corrosive/heat-centric Chromatic Blade outright one-or-two-shotting a bunch of ferrite-armoured mooks even at those levels.
Some of the funkiest weapons, though, are those that have innate viral or corrosive already. Scourge, for example, is one of those weapons that can have Viral/Corrosive/Heat, one of the most devastating combos in the game for armoured enemies, and is patently hilarious as a result. Bubonico is in a similar camp with its alt-fire having innate viral.
One of the most useful and well structured videos out of the warframe youtuber community in a big while
I'm glad I found your channel, you've made warframe less frustrating for me overall
You should’ve mentioned the combinations of Viral, Heat, & Slash Vs Corrosive, Heat, Slash. I feel since both elemental combos ( Viral & Corrosive ) Can use Heat as a single side element an taking slash & bleed ticks from slash into account. There could’ve been more arguments to be made about which is better with those additional multipliers. Especially with Heat in the mix because it temporarily reduces enemy armor while the burn proc is active. An a point you missed about Viral in this video is that 325% additional damage alongside boosted/enhanced damage with DOT damage types (Damage Over Time) So Heat, Slash, an Toxin damage. Great video nonetheless just wanted to pointed out this interaction the both elements ( Viral & Corrosive ) have with Heat. Along side with Viral having the ability to not only boost Slash but Heat & Toxin as well.
This is exactly what I needed to see as a player returning after a few years. Very nice.
Radiation is OP on the Corinth when you use the grenade there is just enemy’s fighting each other everywhere

-best setup for each moa

-best Deimos pet setups
Just some ideas for some content I'd like to see you do, since you do these types of vids quite well.
I think there is one specific stance of the corrosive vs viral dillema you didn't look at: Shotguns.
Shotguns can make use of Primed Charged Shell, a very powerful elemental damage mod that can be used for corrosive damage, but not viral. I wonder if viral would still be the better choice in such circumstances?
In this case, it's also worth considering Viral is even stronger on rifles, since we have Primed Cryo in that case.
It's fascinating how complicated the varied circumstances can be, and ultimately in a game this complicated there will always be edge cases, videos like this lay out the ground rules for how to do the math, and how that applies to most cases. If you've got a more specific case in mind, you know the math, and should be able to figure it out for yourself :)
Technicality: asimptotes can intersect with their corresponding graphs
I mostly use corrosive because it's damage type has so few resistances and it's neutral to most stuff. But this is good to know.
I prefer Corrosive+Crit on melee for daily use, kills enemies faster than Viral and that's what matters the most to me. Also Viral can't kill armored tanky special enemies at all.
i think that’s why people use heat with viral for its armor strip
Still not the better, Viral will do more damage with crits and Slash procs too, only if you are using a build if pure crit, without status chance. Slash ignores armor and viral buffs slash
@@erichdegurechaff9515 Sure. Corrosive crit is not "better" than Viral + Slash, but it is way more consistent. You are actually able to kill everything in the game rather than struggling vs. specific enemies.
@@erichdegurechaff9515 Well, Considering that my Corrosive Crit build one-shots pretty much every enemy, especially the infested and corpus (upwards to level 500), I don't think that status procs are that necessary anyways. And if I need viral for anything, I can use a gun to proc it.
Good guide. I always use viral + slash everywhere except for the Cambrian Drift or steel path. For them I use Corrosive, Heat and Slash.
Very well explained, I will link this to people who ask me about the meta.
Against high level enemies, it's best to bring a crit based melee with condition overload and mainly slash together with a mixture of viral, corrosive, heat and radiation distributed between your companion and your gun, for which I find the new sentinel gun Verglas very helpful, despite it's inconsistent firing. Why radiation? Watch a heavy gunner and a nox with rad procs turning on their allies...
General advice for those who struggle with modding: Get a Cedo, alt fire applies a dozen procs of every status in the game at once. Problem solved.
Thank you for this video. Been running with corrosive mostly but I don't do any high tier enemy fights. Glad to know my 5 forma flux can get stronger!
Very informative video but i still think yoi should have mentioned that viral is often combined with fire for armor reduction and that increases the gap between corrosive and viral even more and so does corrosive projection.
Ive run viral and slash for like 3yrs now. Yrs ago corrosive was ALL ppl talked about. But my own tests in simulacrum leaned toward viral/slash everytime. Ive always known its beauty. Nowdays, viral/heat/slash together are insane!
Why nor both? Panzer Vulpaphyla for Viral procs with quills, and both corrosive and slash on a zaw. The number of quills from the Vulp can reliably give 3-6 to a target every 4s with some to other targets.

15:10 the main use of corrosive is missing :
"do you apply status, and kill your ennemis in enough time to benefit of it" : if no, corrosive is better.
for star chart grineer, Corrosive is better, to benefit of the bonus to the direct damage, without need status.
if they die too quickly whats the point of going for corrosive anyways?
@@sourmango4760 to inflict mush more direct damage, because corrosive at 0 proc ignore 75% of the ferrit armore.
around 5-6 time the damage of viral.
Also super true for weapons that have a slower rate of fire, or deal huge bursts of damage, rather than lots of ticking statuses. It's a tricky topic for sure.
@@Avoncarstien Those weapons have monster slash procs though, look at Nataruk with the solid 1mil slash ticks
@@brianlam5847 The point is that Corrosive base damage *ignores* a substantial part of the target's armor on the *initial* hit, and with the Nataruk's wild upfront damage potential and usually a slow rate of fire, you'll get more damage in the amount of time till the enemy's dead with Corrosive, since next to nothing outside of steel path or certain sortie setups is going to live past 2 hits anyway, so you won't really get much out of viral procs + slash ticks.
For 2-3+ hour endless runs and steel path, yeah you need to consider an entirely different setup, but in my experience even in steel path missions on the Zaramin, around about level 150, corrosive performs quite well; and I have my Laetum currently set up with corrosive/heat since holy *cow* is the base damage on that thing insane.
In any case, this video is super useful for providing the information necessary to understand the game mechanics and allow players to make their own decisions based on what targets they're going after.
"This is called an asymptotic curve."
Me, who just finished college algebra: aaaaAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
Sooo what you're saying is "DE pls remove different armor types so corrosive is as least more effective vs grineer"? I support that
Yes please kill radiation as a damage type. That way we can increase the pile of useless damage types
@@logaf94 radiation isn’t useless , it’s up there with viral , corrosive , heat and slash. a few procs and you are set, instead of having to spam it like crazy
-only casualty bsing gas in my opinion
Corrosive may just get its chance on December 15th! Assuming DE didn't fudge with damage resistances, but we can hope!
I'm curious. How does Corrosive's output scale against Ferrite when considering that its procs also reduce armour?
It work as explained, less armor = less effectivnes. If ferrite stripped to flesh you loose 75% bonus damage. That is the biggest con of corrosive.
@@blacksunserpent Which I suppose is why it can't fully strip armour anymore. I'm just curious of what the exact numbers calculate to per level of proc when accounting for the armour reduction's effect on the Corrosive damage multiplier. It seems like a damage type that becomes both stronger and weaker at the same time as it procs.
@@BRC_Del Corrosive has a 1.75x multiplier against Ferrite and mitigates 75% of its value. With 80% strip, the Ferrite enemy has 5% effective armor against Corrosive against a 1.75x multiplier. To negate the 1.75x multiplier, an enemy must have remaining Damage Reduction of 43%, which is afforded by 225 remaining armor or 4500 initial armor. New Corrosive is better below 4500 armor and becomes worse than Old Corrosive above 4500 armor. Of course 4500 Ferrite armor is what a level 74 Heavy Gunner sports, which is roughly where the softer S-curve scaling kicks in at 80, which was DE's intent. Slash lost 4xIPS weighting, but Hunter Munitions was left untouched, non-Slash based Bleed builds got stronger with Viral's buff.
Great video! Keep up the good work👌
On a rewatch, I realized something.
You can just use Saryn for both Corrosive (1) and Viral (4), and supplement with Slash-based weaponry; with two instances of Toxin on the side (2 & 3); or you could use Lavos’ gimmick of combining elements on the spot. Plus, you have 3 weapon slots (one for each damage type), and a companion that could be modded to use a Viral Verglas while you run Corrosive+Slash, or a Blast+Corrosive Verglas while you run Viral+Slash. The argument is rendered moot by the simple fact that there are many ways to use both elements at the same time.
Personally I still use corrosive damage on melees and certain weapons that arent great with slash. I think corrosive is still useful but there are very few enemies now that actually require the use of corrrosive (Deimos enemies, Optio and sum Uranus enemies, sentients)
Fantastic information as always! The more math in these videos the better.
Old player getting back into it, I'm bummed they nuked the blast proc. Knockdown was awesome for crowd control.
Cold take: corrosive procs were already dead when they could no longer 100% armor strip. Without complete armor strip, rather than using status hose weapons to sustain 80% armor strip, it is easier to use armor strip skills incl bastille, shuriken/link augments etc, while freeing mod slots for viral damage (and procs) instead.
Good point on the sentient damage types tho, although aside from the bosses, armor strip skills are still better at dealing with sentient armor
