Motor production: Speed, Torque and Horsepower
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- The three factors that determine the type of work a motor can produce are speed, torque, and horsepower. Speed is defined as how fast the motor performs its work. For example, a shaft can rotate slowly or quickly. The typical units of measurement for rotational motor speed are Revolutions Per Minute, or rpm.

This example to explain the concept on the selection of motor is excellent. The author must have experience in designing a conveyor belt in industry.
In physics and mechanics, torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. It is also referred to as the moment, moment of force, rotational force or turning effect, depending on the field of study. The concept originated with the studies by Archimedes of the usage of levers. Wikipedia
Torque and moment are two different things, best not to get them confused
I think your radius for torque should be from the center of the shaft to the rope windings ; in the first example.
+Slap Stick
amen to that
+Slap Stick it shouldnt matter based on the point of tq being defined
0:52 No!!!
Great Video. thanks
Very good video
Author is playing fast and loose with terminology.
Torque is NOT work nor HP. Torque is rotational FORCE. Work is Force multiplied by distance in direction of force and actually is TRANSFER of energy from one body to another. Power including horsepower is RATE of work or Work/time or F.d/t or Force x velocity. When using Torque as Force then Power or HP =Torque x RPM/5252
yeah i kinda hit pause when he was like 'a pound-foot!'. im like ..yeah no.
Torque and work have the same SI unit, no? Also, torque is a product of force AND the distance between the force and the fulcrum. In a sense, torque IS work done on a rotating body. Else, correct me since I‘m a newbie
@@heavycurrent7462 No it's correct. People are just arguing nomenclature, both torque and work are a product of force and distance. Hence they are essentially the same, however people prefer to look at the differently
@@heavycurrent7462 Torque is the rotational force. Work is the difference in kinetic energy. They have the same unit but are different in principle. In work, distance and force are in the same direction. In torque, they are perpendicular. Work = Torque * ANGLE in radian. Power = Work / time = Torque * (angle / time) = Torque * rotational speed (in radian/s).
@@minhcly95 I‘ve asked a friend of mine who teaches physics in a university. He said there is no such thing as rotational force, except if it is also measured in Newton. "Torque is not a force in any way, but can be looked at as the work done to rotate a body about an axis." He also said the distance and force to measure torque are actually of the same direction, except that the direction is circular rather than straight (circumference). But we calculate the radius instead since in gearing, circumference and radius are directly proportional and the latter is easier to measure.
There is a mix-up between Power and Energy in this video.
Power is defined as the Energy generated or spent over a period of time. Assume you generated 500 Joules over 5 seconds then the average Power generation over these 5 seconds is 500/5=100 Watts. In IS units, the Power unit is Watt=Joule/Sec. In Imperial Units, the Power unit is BTU/hr.
Here are few ENERGY conversions (Think of energy as: Joules, BTU, and Kwh i.e. Kilowatt-hour):
1 Joule=0.000947817 BTU=2.7778e-7 Kwh
1 BTU= 1055.06 Joule=0.000293071 Kwh
1 Kwh= =3.6e+6 Joule = 3412.14 BTU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are few POWER conversions (think of Power as: Watts, Mechanical Horsepower hp(i),
1 Watt=3.412141 BTU/Hr=0.0013410 hp(i)
1 BTU/Hr= 0.2931 Watt=0.000393 hp(i)
1 hp(i)= 745.67 Watt = 2544.433 BTU/hr
Thank you, that slide directly comparing HP and Joules was driving me crazy
Good animation and explanation, thanks.
1:35 Hp can be translated to Joules?! seriously?! that's wrong
Sim ,,,um motor consome 800 watts mas so nos da 1 HP (746 watts),visto isto 746 watts foram para o motor e 54 watts foram transformados em calor (joules ) e outras coisas envolvidas que eu nao vou aqui explicar porque quem quer aprender vaia para a escola como eu fui.Nenhuma energia se perde mas toda ela se converte ,,,Nao te metas em coisas que nao sabes sair delas
The Torque definition is not properly explained?????
Means clearly not defined
You have to be careful with the equivalent units. HP is equivalent to Btu/hr or Watts. Do not mixed Work units with Power Units
The horse pulling weight vertically through a pulley is a bit misleading isn't it? for example 1 ft/lb is equal to 1 lb of weight on a lever one foot off the axis of rotation
1:38 Isn't Watt the same as Joules/sec?
+kalapriyan SOOOOO TRUE!!!! JOULES IS WORK NOT POWER!! BAD VIDEO, VERY BAD VIDEO
what he said is correct >> if you want to maintain any factor of the three factors constant, the other tow shall behave due to the equation .. this what did he mean
Amazing explanation.
+Another Games Indeed.
Hp and joules are not compatible.
joules = [length]^2 [mass])/[time]^2 | = energy
hp = (horsepower) | ([length]^2 [mass])/[time]^3 |= power
BTU_IT (IT British thermal units)= | ([length]^2 [mass])/[time]^2 = energy
Thank you I was thinking the same thing!
SuperAnders9000 you are ok, joule is the unit in international sistem for energy, otherwise hp is a unit in usa sistem for power (energy by time)
Jorge Godinez
Guys... It can all be calculated, it's just deciding between which word to apply to any given situation. Hp is great for mechanical work like cars or cranes but has 0 impact on deciding chemical needs. Joules of energy (i.e. potential energy) is much different than live horsepower.
Exactly!
Jay Edlington Hp and joule are fundamentally different things. It is not a matter of which application is more convenient. You can certainly use horsepower in chemical applications, but you will need a time dimension using hp, (i.e. total energy released or taken / duration of the reaction), In this case power can be useful if you want the rate of reaction, but it will not be useful if you do not care about how fast the reaction needs to be done.
thanks
This is not the best example of explaing this topic. Also, Joules and BTU are not a measurement of power, it's work... And the HP illustration at the end could have been better, and was in fact misleading.
Power=Work
Surely work is equivalent to energy? And that unit should be joules per second?
Rogue Nero you're wrong.
Power is work done over time. Joules is a measurement of energy, so if you have a certain amount of energy being produced over time, you can say that there is a power being produced within this system.
Joules = *Energy*
Joules/sec = *Power*
Yeah i noticed that it was straight joules and it actually confused me cause joules is just energy.I guess you are right.English is not my mother tongue so some terminology i dont understand,thanks anyway for answering
My question is that select a motor of treadmill that can bear weight of 120 kg....I need calculation
1:38 1 HP = 745.7 Joules per second and 745.7 Watts per second
You said torque is a special type of work (what means special type please explain this special type)
Why is this like over and over again for like 10 times and watts per second is the same as joules per second
I came here to study that how many kilos of load can a 1hp motor pull?? But after watching the whole video i didn't get any answer please help me as I'm new to this subject. Thanks
Cool info - thanks!
BTU and Joules are units of energy.. not power.. divide it by time.. then it will become unit of power.. example.. BTU/s or Joule/s=watts..
and i think 1BTU=1.055KJ.. if im not mistaken.
@@rijedbody756 all i know is BTS
Very good work 👍
Hp is constant how can it be increased or decreased?
Sir yet I not understand torque
I understand rpm and hp
Please explain torque by an example with proper explanation by means of animation
Joules cannot be converted into horsepower. Too many things are wrong with this video.
Yes, 1watt=1joules/second
1pascal=1N/M^2
1PSI=6894.75729pascal
1PSI=0.0689BAR
1-kgforce=9.8N
100kg pasacl=1BAR
1N-M=1 joules
KgM^2/S^2=joules
can easily be misinterpreted but yes it technically can.
but actually this is not practical case >>> for example if you rotate a motor on a frequency less than rated , its speed will decrease , and its torque will increase , its current will increase also>> return to torque speed cc.s curve and h.p
A joule is a measurement of energy, not power. A watt is one joule per second.
Can we say torque depends upon load. If load remains constant, torque will not increase.
Hello
I need to carry 25 kg by a robot, which characteristic( power, torque, speed) the motor should have to carry this weight, we are using DC motor.
Torque is not equal to f*r .it is equal to the r*f(means r cross f)
Exlent tutorils, sir I am very happy to know. Tank you for sharing your knowledge
Where is this 5252 comes..?
will the calculation method remains same if we use gear motor?
Why did you keep saying foot/pounds backwards?
first illustrated distance is wrong
Can I got 2 or 3 HP with high speed if yes please help me what is it thank you
How come torque is work.
Very Good Explanation... Just Awesome
HP does not translate into Joules 1:35
HP = kW = Joules/Second . So it does and it doesn't.
Torque, on the other hand, does. 1 Nm = 1 Joule
Nm is also unit of energy when 1 N force moves something 1 m distance, but Nm as unit of torque cannot be translated into energy!
how can i bldc motor design? how should i start ? I want to 1.5kW-2kW
This is totally wrong video. at 2:10 if speed decreases, HP should increase in order to remain a constant torque, instead, he says HP should decrease. It won't satisfy the mathematical expression.
Wrong bro, simple logic if numerator(power) multiplies by x, then denominator(Speed) also be multiplies by same x to maintain the constant result(torque).
he didnt say the speed decreased due to load. if voltage is lowered, speed is lowered. if amps are lowered, torque is lowered.
just lock on the formulas then you know ,the math don't lie
Muy buena
What is 5252 ?
Very Good Explanation
746 watt = 746 Joul/second ... so why 1hp ===?1055 joules
Torque = Force times Radius and Horse power = Torque divide Time where is Power is not the same as Energy.
Typical units are not typical anywhere else other than the US.
Isn't Torque a Force?
According to Taylor's research, rather than towering over others in Judea, Jesus was about 5 foot 5 inches (1.7 meters) tall, or the average height seen in skeletal remains from males there at the time.27 Feb 2018
good explanation
how to apply more torque for a dc motor? i have a dc motor from old printer. thanks
decrease rpm or increase power
Joules and BTUs are not units of power! They are units of energy!
May someone help me? I can't understand why the Torque is measured in lb • ft if ecuation says is equal to Force times radio, is he taking the Force as Dough??
.
what is "5252"? when you showing the relations?
It's a constant
You messed up so many units...
Joules is unit of energy not Power.
good, but like lullaby...
What the fuck did you smoke to get a joule conversion from HP?
Can you please convert pounds to kilos ,,
(If horse power increase rpm also increase, if rpm decrease horse power decrease to compensate)¹²²
what is 5252 for?
a costante #
Very wrong, the unit for torque is Newton-meter(N-m).
Is motar ka kimat keya hai sir
Pound foot is not very typical but whatever
Joules/Sec not joules. Great video though! thanks.
I am getting confusion after seeing your video
What is the torque??
moment motor
If my desired highness remains constant then the quality of weed and how much I smoke are proportional...
Got it.
which book you would like to learn more about the engine
Anyone else think of Donkey Kong while watching this?
1 hp= 746j/s
What is number 5252
constant
「内容を明確にする必要があります」、
Can we say ? 1hp = 76 kg-m per sec
Foot ... my foot ...
wrong
if you're watching this and know nothing of basic physics, stop now. this guy has his units confused all over the place. torque is NOT work.
0:48 i hate imperial system 😡😡😡😡
That's a good way to burn out your motor.
What the heck is this? "1 HP = 1,055 joules"
1 HP = 746 JOULES PER SECOND
How can someone make such a huge mistake?
Liar liar your evil pants are on fire.
HP is how fast 550 lbs can be moved in 1 second,
Or 33.000lbs in 60 seconds.
Badly explained.
stupid example.
not stupid ,,was the first way to calculate work
