“You’re not a failure if you’re burnt out” if that doesn’t sum it up entirely. People see challenges like this and think fitness has to be some strict military style regimen and that ruins their enjoyment of it. Thank you for always calling out these programs for what they are and advocating for true fulfillment in wellness!

Thanks beautiful 🥹❤️‍🔥 it’s hard because I know the creator will argue this is about mental toughness but for me all that matters in communication is the message received. If a lot of people don’t take it that way, and take it as a physical transformation challenge that’s all that matters. There are really sad things happening on TikTok in the name of it and so it’s on the creator to add more clarity and maintain the mental development elements while protecting people’s health in my opinion.

@@natachaoceane I agree. I worry for people who see this and think they have to do it to succeed in fitness. It reminds me of the mindset I had when I was struggling with a restrictive eating disorder of pushing yourself to inevitable failure followed by a strict purge. Your videos are what gave me a wake up call and pulled me back to loving fitness and caring for my body in a healthy way. I owe a lot to you and am so grateful for your content. Cheers and keep up the amazing work! ♥️☺️

@@Shvabicu Tbf, it could produce results for people who have never worked out before, since eating that little + working out THAT much is bound to atleast make you lose weight. But it definitely is not worth it, and very unsustainable. I've tried workout programs like these before and ended up destroying my health completely, and always thinking I was the issue for quitting, even tho my body was giving out.
5 years of failure thanks to this ''all or nothing'' mentality where people think you should workout 1 hour a day, 7 days a week, all to failure, ignoring every sign of your body. Now I'm in my 20's and only now actually making sure not to overdo my workout regime, and making sure I eat enough. Sadly though many influencers still do the opposite and push for these insane mindsets, often to make money, and if you aren't part of fitness already it is easy to fall for it. Glad to see more youtubers speak against it and show how unsustainable it is!

Thank you for this video Natasha! I tried 75 hard after seeing all the TikToks, and I was intrigued by the idea of a “mental toughness challenge”, but I found that while doing it, it was really making me hate exercising which is unlike me.
The final straw for me was in the 75 Hard App, if you don’t check off all the tasks from the previous day, a message pops up that says, “You haven’t checked in. That means either you did the work and forgot to check everything off or you let your inner bitch voice beat you. Which is it?”
What a discouraging and rude message to share to people, some who may be just starting out on their health/fitness journey. Self-hate isn’t promoting “mental toughness”, it’s just toxic.

Because of you, Natacha, I stopped “dieting” and stopped trying to lose weight. I started cooking my meals at home instead of eating out and eating with a fork and knife so I could be more conscious of how much I was eating. I began stopping once I was satisfied whether I ate everything on my plate or not. I began working out to challenge and enjoy myself as well as to see what my body could accomplish. I became happier, more fulfilled, and feel like my mind has been freed from the “weight loss obsessed prison” I had been in for decades. I watched my body composition change so much and the scale still went down even though I didn’t stress about it. I did all of that leading up to my third pregnancy and am now 3 months postpartum. I’m so thankful I began practicing these principles before getting pregnant. My mind feels so healthy now and I know I can accomplish any physical goals I might set because they aren’t centered around weight loss but rather strength, agility, and body composition. Thank you for everything you do! You’ve helped me transform my life and I am so glad my daughter can learn these things so much earlier than I did!

@@Shvabicu I never said dieting was bad. A caloric deficit is the only way to lose fat and a caloric surplus gives you energy to build muscle. My point was how unhealthy my obsession with weight loss was. I am still currently losing weight, but in a way I can enjoy and sustain for the rest of my life. I’m more focused on the elements of my body that bring me joy, like it’s ability to perform, rather than just thinking smaller equals better. My results have still been fat loss and changes in my body composition, but the process is completely enjoyable for me now.

Fasting is the opposite of a fad, it is something all ancient peoples did and all major religions do.
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue ua-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/v-deo.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! ua-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/v-deo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! ua-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/v-deo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: ua-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/v-deo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! ua-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/v-deo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? ua-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/v-deo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
      ua-cam.com/video/fJUDucBWv4s/v-deo.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Thank you for being real and for also bringing up the fact that these things always demonize certain foods which actually caused me to develop orthorexia when I was first trying to lose weight years ago. It's been over 10 years and I'm still triggered by scales (I cannot weigh myself or food) and calories (I cannot count them regularly); anything that reminds me that I am 'failing' at someone's ideal diet... it sucks. For watchers who are reading this: Natacha's Cut 2022 is VERY easy to get into and adjust for your own lifestyle and strengths/weaknesses. I have not used the meal prep, because of the above issues, but at week 6 I am feeling so much stronger, flexible, lighter on my feet, and my shoulders and calves are getting nice and toned. I believe Andy said he made it for himself to be very disciplined and if he could do it then he could do anything, and then it went viral years ago. So I guess we have the freedom do to as we please because not everybody can eat the same thing due to diet restrictions or allergies etc. i know common sense ain’t common but anything that’s a diet or exercise you need to know what’s best for you or take it up with a doctor. People need to think with their brain honestly.

    • @natachaoceane
      @natachaoceane  2 роки тому +235

My big, big issue is the lack of guidance. I create programmes for a general population and I can’t stress the amount of thought and care that should be going into each sentence when you create at this scale. Things that might seem blindingly obvious to one person aren’t so obvious to everyone when you you scale up to 10,000 / 100,000 / 1,000,000 people.
My issue isn’t with the intent. Mental resilience is awesome and important. The creator may have had great intentions and anecdotally seen awesome results himself. But he has also had years to see how people are interpreting the programme on TikTok. Years to add clarity where it’s needed, guidance around key wording, info on red flags to help people take care of themselves.
People are busy, they have difficulties and challenges that need their primary energy and attention. Often there isn’t a lot left over to really critically think these things through, you know?
Like I said, there are some people and circumstances where this might be a great idea and of long-term value. Do I believe that those circumstances apply to the bulk of the people on the programme? 🙃

To watch yourself fail over and over again at something that is extremely hard on your mental and physical health is a sign that a program like this should be attempted. For 75 hard, our workouts included walking, playing tennis, doing yoga. Not every workout was intense. Progress pics were more of our emotion for the day. I think the biggest thing that helped me was resetting my relationship with food, I drank more water, and it DEFINITELY reset my relationship with alcohol. I was proud of myself by the end. But no, the workouts were not that intense every day.

I think that sounds healthier than going too hard every day. Especially those with autoimmune diseases-I have hashimotos and I’ve realized over training and over training hard is WAY to much inflammation for my body and it takes days to recover. So doing a low impact activity on some days makes a lot of sense!

it sounds like you're one of the luckier, more mature participants, so good for you. But for young people this will definitely be damaging. Also, calling walking and doing light yoga a 'workout' is a bit strange. If it was called 'physical activity', it would make sense, but the challendge definitely called for some real exercise.

Hey Natacha! I really enjoyed this video and your take on the challenge. You have really helped me in my fitness journey and my view of food. I'm actually currently doing the 75 Hard challenge (on day 51) and I agree with a lot of what you are saying. There is not a lot of guidance, but that allows for you to adapt your 75 days to your needs. However, people definitely have taken it too far with lack of calories, doing workouts too intensly, and loosing weight way too fast in an unsustainable way. The way I have been doing the challenge is eating whole foods intuitively which includes having a piece of dark chocolate when I want because life without dessert is not realistic for me long term. For my week of workouts I have 4 gym sessions, I run or walk depending on the day, and I make sure to include yoga sessions inbetween to prevent injury and burnout. I think it can be a great challenge if people stopped focusing on the asthetic benefits and honed in on their mentality and how they feel. The challenge has showed me to stop making excuses because of the weather or being a little sore and just do it. You made a commitment to yourself so you better show up every day to become a better version of you.

I totally love what you’re saying about honing in on this being a mental thing and really focussing on that element of it. That’s such a great, powerful thing to never forget and I wish so much that was the case in every instance because this then could have it’s desired effect.
My issue really is about the interpretations I see, which have totally been enabled by of a lack of care and support. So much focus on the physical transformation, so much hiding space for orthorexia to develop and flourish.
I 100% don’t think this is a bad idea in the right circumstances but I do believe those are a minority of the experienced I see shared online which only further fuels repetition of the same.

It speaks volumes about you and your channel Natacha, that I've never seen you that dissatisfied facing a meal or a workout other than in this video :D And I'm also so proud of myself (and so thankful to you for teaching me) that I only watched a few minutes of the video and already was like "this can't be right - you're setting yourself up for failure!" I struggled a lot with my motivation and keeping up my routines lately and this video really grounded me again. You make me see how far I've come already and that being active and healthy was never about chastising myself but about being a happier, more fulfilled me.
And let's call this challenge what it is: A shitshow. It's not a sustainable way to reach any goal - physical or mental -, on the contrary it's detrimental to any form of healthy progress, it gives you zero guidance on what to do and how different factors actually interact and on top of that blames yourself for all of that for you "not being tough enough". It's a challenge to punish yourself for wanting to be a better, healthier self. It makes me so mad.
I'm just so glad I found your channel Natacha - thank you so much for your work! It's so needed in this industry. Thank you so so much.

It was a looooooong journey from eating 1200 (sometimes even 800) kcal a day, burning out, gaining weight, panicking and starting the diet again. Then finally breaking the cycle and slowly increasing my calorie intake while researching nutrition and macros. Now finally, after like six painful years, I'm eating disorder free, eating well, exercising because I enjoy it instead of as a punishment, and feeling and looking like my best self so far! Thank you so so so much! Seriously 🤗

Yes!! 100% agree with your ending statement. There's nothing wrong with setting goals for yourself and challenging yourself to do hard things (often it's a very good thing!). But, it is important that these goals are personally meaningful and that you extend grace to yourself when you're not perfect.
These challenges can make you feel like you're not good enough because you don't execute every aspect of them perfectly. This pressure to be perfect, to never rest, to never "cheat"... it can lead to some pretty disordered thought patterns around health and exercise.
What we do for our bodies should add to our life. If a routine ever makes you feel guilty or that any mistake is failure, then I can't imagine it being a healthy routine.

I feel like a healthier way to go about this whole process (if it is really about building better/healthier habits) is to do more of a 75 soft. What I mean by that would be completing 75% of the to do list for 75% of the 75 days. The 75 hard does look a lot like overtraining and recovery is really where progress happens. Without recovery, what is the point of pushing the body. Building balance is by far the most important aspect of health. Your point about the 76th day is right. If we cannot see ourselves sticking to something long term, it is not going to build lasting results or help us achieve a healthy life.

I didn't do it for the body recomp or transformation, mainly just took up the challenge. In the end, i decided it was stupid, and went back to good workout splits, a healthy (but normal) diet, a half gallon of water plus other fluids, and reading when i feel like it. As for the cold showers, i basically like to take a normal hot shower and then do a cold finish for a minute or two. Makes me feel good. Thanks for this video though...very entertaining and i agree with your assessment.
