      Think about it: carbs have existed for thousands of years now. I'm Italian and I eat bread and pasta many times per week, sometimes even every single day of a week. In China and Japan carbs are considered normal in their diet. Still, practically no one is fat there. In Italy is a bit different, our weight is higher in general, but not because of carbs, but because of a sedentary life and too much processed food (think chips, McDonald's, Nutella, etc... We are consuming much more of these products nowadays than we did when I was a child for example). This shows that carbs are not the problem, they don't make you fat, otherwise we would have been fat since centuries ago. I'm telling you this hoping it reassures you and that it helps you to recover. I have suffered from an ED in my teenage years and I wouldn't wish that to my worst enemy. ED's are bi*ches, but you can recover and have a happy, fulfilling life, with a good and balanced relationship with food. So don't give up, nurture yourself because your body needs it and you're gonna spend with it your whole life. Plus, if you mistreat it now you're gonna regret it so much more later. Be gentle and kind with it and it will repay you ❤️ I wish you the best

    I totally agree with you about carbs. I loss over 150 pounds eating carbs (yes that includes bread and rice).People make things so complicated. Eat in a caloric deficit, eat Whole Foods mostly, do not eliminate any food from your diet, and eat non healthy food in moderation. Also weight loss is mental as much as it is physical.

      Not everyone can eat bread if they have gluten sensitivities though.... the real issue is overeating and food sensitives in my opinion. Just like you said, eat whole foods mostly. Bread however is not a whole food unless it's whole grain so I can see where people get confused not knowing how to differentiate.

    • @onedirectionlover317
      @onedirectionlover317 2 роки тому +3

      @Beastbombshell Yeah although from a strictly caloric deficit point of view, fats can get dangerous b/c they're over twice as calorie dense as protein and carbs. Ofc the question is "how satiating is a given food item", but frankly I don't find guac satiating at ALL, so it'd be TOO easy to consume fats in a caloric excess unless you're careful. Meats (probably) work b/c they're also protein-dense. I think the key is probably protein and fibrous carbs for satiation (along with adequate water consumption - I find, especially if I've had SOME food at least, that drinking tons of water makes me feel very full with even a little food). If someone needs to cut back on even fiber for health reasons, or their body happens to work better with fat than even fiber, that's different (b/c different people's bodies vary SO much w.r.t. metabolism, etc.) but in general I think high protein + fiber + more water is probably a good first step to help feel fuller.
      Like you said, this probably works b/c people's carbs aren't fibrous enough.

    Love you Natacha. You're really inspiring! On this point I just want to add: About 40% of young Americans have insulin resistance. A low carb diet has been shown to help reverse insulin resistance. It isn't just about weight loss. General consensus amongst RDs may be not to avoid carbs, but people should also know if they're metabolically I'm a position to tolerate high/processed carbs and not take generalized advice that may be actively harming them (I was guilty of this for many years - only after learning what my body needed has my health improved.)

    • @natachaoceane

      Hey K 🤍🤍 that’s fair and potentially a valid point to keep in mind, but I think it’s helpful to remember than only 20% of my audience is from the US, and of my audience in the US I’m not convinced the subgroup is a truly random sample with that same incidence of insulin resistance.
      I agree that this shouldn’t at all be all about fat loss, I’m really happy to hear that the conversation has been moving beyond that! 🤍🙏 there has been decades of fearmongering around carbohydrates disproportionately causing fat gain and stopping fat loss though, and I feel like my conclusion is quite specific on the cause/effect I’m focussing on.
      I’ll think about how I can add some more nuance and balance that out though because your point is fair and I appreciate you raising it ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I hope you have a happy weekend!

  • @MariaCrowley
    @MariaCrowley 2 роки тому +3

    Eating a high carb diet works well if you are an athlete or someone who does moderate/intense exercise most days of the week because you are actually using many of those consumed carbs for energy. The problem is most normal people eat high carb diets and are sedentary. Carbohydrates stimulate an insulin response which is what allows us to absorb glucose and store body fat so when carbs are eaten in excess this is why it’s very easy to gain weight. I’m a type 1 diabetic so I’ve experimented a lot with high carb, low carb, and moderate carb diets over the years and the worst thing you can do is take a hefty dose of insulin for a high carb meal then get frequent low blood sugars later. I know you know this already but there are certain conditions that just don’t benefit from consuming a high carb diet.

    • @onedirectionlover317
      @onedirectionlover317 2 роки тому

      Idk, I grew up vegetarian and therefore definitely had a high-carb diet, which included tortillas, bread, and potatoes on the regular, and lived relatively sedentarily (wasn't an athlete or anything) and I've never really had weight issues growing up (except for a chubby phase for a few years in elementary school). My parents only started having weight issues in their mid-40s / 50s on a similar diet, and also don't really work out, and we do snack (although our main meals were generally home cooked). I also noticed this for many of the Indian people with whom I grew up. Similarly, I know plenty of slim East Asians even though East Asian cuisine uses a lot of white rice and the noodles aren't necessarily whole-wheat or anything.
      Ofc different bodies are different, but I think that the low-carb diets touted as miracles are certainly not necessary for even sedentary people to stay at a healthy weight - it's pretty impossible to be low-carb if you're vegetarian, and I know plenty of sedentary vegetarians at a healthy weight. At the end of the day, not all foods are created equally, and generally proteins and fiber seem to help with satiation and avoiding overeating (as does adequate water intake). And ofc health conditions require additional restrictions, but the average person probably doesn't need to avoid carbs like the plague and induce the level of misery Natacha seemed to endure from avoiding many of her favorite foods simply to be healthy.

    • @MariaCrowley
      @MariaCrowley 2 роки тому +3

      @@onedirectionlover317 I get what you’re saying but most adults can’t eat whatever they want and stay at a healthy weight. There’s a reason why 70% of people are overweight and 1 out of 2 Americans have insulin resistance. Also, even if you are at a healthy weight it doesn’t mean your insides are healthy. You can still have high blood pressure, high triglycerides and insulin resistance and be at a healthy weight. Also, Asians, African Americans and Hispanic cultures have the highest rates of type 2 diabetes.

      Carbs give more energy than fat. People think they’re bad because they think only animal products (which is fat and protein) have protein. Legumes have decent protein and are high in carbs. Then of course there’s protein powder. Soy milk has the same amount as cow milk too and isn’t unhealthy unless you’re allergic big misconception/meme. Search soy protein meta analysis, affects of soy on hormones meta analysis, etc. There’s a newer one I found yet again finding 0 solid evidence of the claims ppl make about it. People also can’t differ between whole foods and highly processed stuff. Another really dumb trend I’ve seen is people thinking carbs equate to sugar just because natural sugar is a carb and as if natural sugar is the same as added

    2 years ago I and my 4 friends started a low carb diet. Aka Keto diet. In avg three months time, we all lost incredible amount of weight without any exercise except then walking. We all turned into thinner and happy folks! :) Sounds amazing right!
    But we all got back all that kilos 1.5 - 1.6 times more. So, I personally lost 10 kilos, then got back 16 kilos! But more important and terrible thing than getting those kilos back, all of our psychological relationship with food got so much broken! I can even dare to say that we had eating disorder for a long time.
    After 1 year of retrying to do keto diet and failing, I decided to try cliche way. Eat healthy and doing exercise! Got a personal trainer and learnt how to exercise properly. Best thing to do for myself. And most importantly, now I have a healthy relationship with food.

    I did low-carb/keto for 5 years while fasted training, then started Crossfit and had to introduce carbs, but I’m very sensitive to them and too much oatmeal or rice makes me feel like crap unless I’m doing a super hard workout. All that to say, a week is an interesting experiment for a healthy person without chronic inflammation or metabolic syndrome. Adaptation periods are a serious talking point. Good for you taking on the challenge! ❤

      Thank you for mentioning the adaptation phase. People have to understand that it's a shock and longer process for our body to adjust after cutting off the carbs. We probably eat them since we are little so we can not expect that we can change it within few days. Greets

      and also, 100g of carbs, is still "a lot", it's not keto, so you wouldn't see the benefits touted by keto with that.

      I've been eating low carb for the past maybe 8 years. For me this transition happened naturally... I just don't crave carbs like at all and they don't make me feel good. 🤷‍♀️ I'm also the opposite to Natacha... I don't feel satisfied by carbs, I don't like pasta or pizza... 😂
      I workout fasted before work (weights) and I run/cycle as well... However I've never had any issues with energy or performance. 🤔🤗 Probably some bodies prefer different types of food. 🤷‍♀️

      Yes, thanks for this comment, it's just what I was thinking.

      @@OpheliathePotato there's that and the fact that again, 100g of carbs is too much for our bodies to start relying on fat as a fuel source instead of carbs. But it's also true that once the body relies on fat, the way energy is created, so to speak, does not function in the same way it does when using carbs, so there are differences in performance. But there's a good chance that we wouldn't feel said difference at a "casual" level of fitness compared to professional athletes.
