One of the things I have always loved about this channel, you guys are real. I used to feel bad that I didn’t eat teeny tiny portions like my friends. And then I saw you and realised it was okay. I thought it was bad that I wasn’t going to the gym when I was over worked and just going instead of sleeping like other people would. Then I saw you guys say that sometimes you only work out once or twice a week if your busy. This is such a real and great channel. Forever one of my faves.

Natacha, can I just say that in the year or two that I've been watching your videos you have changed how I view my body my nutrition and my overall weight loss journey. I love that you're so into the science and reviewing the literature on sports and nutrition, and you honestly have helped me so much. I'll admit I haven't lost much weight compared to how long I've been trying but lately I've been feeling so much healthier regardless, so thank you for your part in that.

Oh hey Natacha! I wanted to genuinely ask what are your thoughts on trainers talking about womens workout routines? I feel like I’m seeing more and more trainers talking about how people who menstruate are more uncoordinated during their menstruation cycle and that they should take it easy/ or only do yoga for that week or even two weeks. I guess I do feel weaker (cramp days don’t help lifting of course) but I love my programs and I love seeing my progress over a continuous time! BUT! It is undeniable that programs and trainers are mainly taught and created by men for men! Some trainers are showing evidence for one thing and others and showing evidence for the other! Anybody else feel lost in this too? Love you lots, Signed a women in science who wants to know more!
I think it all boils down to what works best for you personally. Some are very impacted by their periods, while others can go on about their lives during that time of the month. If you feel that you are capable of strength training throughout your period, don't feel like you need to force a new routine but also don't feel discouraged if you aren't as strong as you are on other days. If your body tells you that a more relaxed method of movement helps best, then do that. A healthy lifestyle is only healthy if you don't have to constantly force yourself to do things you don't feel like doing, so find out what works best for your body and mind (maybe try different approaches over a couple of months) and what is easily incorporated into your routine.
I agree with Tyam here. Just listen to your body, don’t skip workouts just because you’re menstruating, but don’t force anything either. Some days you’re just not feeling it. I’m not at my strongest (both physically and mentally) during my menstruation, so I just lower the training volume to what I feel comfortable with that day/week. It’s also what my (female) personal trainer advises.
I think you just have to see how you feel...personally to me I'm not affected. I know i can go through my workouts with the same intensity. But that's not everyone. Although resting isn't answer..actually activity while on your period is really helpful shows benefits more than harm....I know you said yoga but that's an active rest still. But that's not a rule it's all based on the individual i don't like when they make people believe that they're less capable when on period. Also i don't like the "rest on your period" thing. We're not fragile beings...and there's many benefits from working out. However some individuals might need that,that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a rule. For me I just do what I'd usually do there's no difference in my performance or energy really.
I’m also in sciences, but I don’t know a whole lot about menstruation, however a colleague of mine once told me that despite the cramps, your menstrual cycle increases your pain tolerance and can actually make working out at a high intensity easier? I don’t know how accurate that is, but for me personally I can take an Advil and crush out a good workout. It depends on the month though.

I am currently trying to get back into my fitness routine after being too busy and stressed. Any tips for dealing with the discouragement that comes from my lack of endurance that I once had? It can be hard to want to workout when I can’t do everything I used to be able to do.
You just have to get back at it with a beginner's mindset. Holding onto thoughts like "I used to be this strong," "I used to do x reps before," etc. will only hinder you for trying your best to be better. Acknowledge your shortcomings while you're at it. It's gonna get really frustrating sometimes but once you get to see yourself gaining back strength and endurance again, you'll definitely feel more motivated to continue and that moment is gonna be so euphoric. Good luck!
Just start. You'll get there. Think of your level back then as your most advanced....do the intermediate to that level. If there's some moves that you can do with the same level back then do them with the same level. If you can even get through half of the reps with your advanced but can't continue with the same level throughout a set or so lower to your intermediate...modify the move. Make sure you do alot of mobility exercises and stretching. Be active and move around... Test yourself before working out,basically you want to test your level in a set or moves and see your quantity and intensity maintaining good quality. Lower the intensity if it hurts the quality. Or alternate between 2 intensities. Remember to always push yourself to your limits....never past you limits but to your limits and remember that you don't always know what are your limits or what you can really do and not do.

I am currently trying to get back into my fitness routine after being too busy and stressed. Any tips for dealing with the discouragement that comes from my lack of endurance that I once had? It can be hard to want to workout when I can’t do everything I used to be able to do.

You just have to get back at it with a beginner's mindset. Holding onto thoughts like "I used to be this strong," "I used to do x reps before," etc. will only hinder you for trying your best to be better. Acknowledge your shortcomings while you're at it. It's gonna get really frustrating sometimes but once you get to see yourself gaining back strength and endurance again, you'll definitely feel more motivated to continue and that moment is gonna be so euphoric. Just start. You'll get there. Think of your level back then as your most advanced....do the intermediate to that level. If there's some moves that you can do with the same level back then do them with the same level. If you can even get through half of the reps with your advanced but can't continue with the same level throughout a set or so lower to your intermediate...modify the move. Make sure you do alot of mobility exercises and stretching. Be active and move around... Test yourself before working out,basically you want to test your level in a set or moves and see your quantity and intensity maintaining good quality. Lower the intensity if it hurts the quality. Or alternate between 2 intensities. Remember to always push yourself to your limits....never past you limits but to your limits and remember that you don't always know what are your limits or what you can really do and not do.
Yeah, we're gonna need a part 2, part 3, and just keep going...never stop!
