Thanks for your question. Have you spoken to any teachers at school about this?

My son (7 years old) is currently being tested for learning disabilities and dyslexia. Given his family history, father was diagnosed with mild to severe dyslexia and has a reading comprehension of a 5th grader. We’re thinking he’ll have the same issues. When describing how my son sees words he says he understands what letters are and even knows phonetically what they should sound like, but once they’re together it doesn’t make sense. He tries for hours to sound out his words but even when broken down struggles immensely. We’ve tried repeated writing words to help him, and even still he’ll miss letters while trying to recall or spell out the word. He’s still very young and is eager to learn but I’m afraid he’ll lose interest with age if we don’t help him now. Are there any programs, apps, or tutors you suggest?

I can relate, I get my B and D MIXED UP ALL THE TIME... but I've always been a reader I can make and know what the words say .. but for the life of me, I can't spell to save my life..it's been very frustrating through my whole life, it's held me back in my work life.... I have been tested a few different times in life, it's a mystery to the tester how I'm able to read be articulate and comprehend when I'm reading the yet I can't spell I don't understand it either. Does this make me dyslexia?

Hi, Adelina. Thanks for your comment and question. Have you been tested by a doctor or psychologist who specializes in dyslexia? To answer your question, we do sometimes encounter individuals with dyslexia who read fairly well, but have a very difficult time with spelling. Sometimes, this is the result of the individual memorizing large numbers of words. So, they recognize them while reading, but they have difficulty reproducing the spellings. Have a great day.
