Dion, you don't need to "ask your opponent for permission" to touch your own dial. You simply need to inform your opponent, so there's no perceived shadiness. Rules Ref, page 10.

In one of my first tournaments (Canadian nationals, I had been playing about 3 months) I went to use ion torpedos and I forgot the ion tokens and my opponent told me if I forgot the token I can't use the device. He would have flown off the board, I believed him and didn't use the torpedos. That still annoys me years later.
So you knew we were there yet still started with your back to us and ignored us. You didn't say "Oh, I didn't see you there" when you turned around. :P

I hate calling a judge cause I feel like I'm bothering them for no reason, so I often just give the close call to my opponent. ^-^;;;
