Damn it feels so fucking good to pick what only around 12% people picked and be right. Cav in a prolonged melee fight are just no good. Close fight of course, but the SH troops were also a lot cheaper, so its actually quite impressive what they accomplished.
I think the only time charge bonus would be better would be with Lancers because they are purposely meant to be used to cycle charge. For all other cavalry units I don't see why they would be any better.
Would have been a perfect opportunity to showcase Shield Wall in the 2nd test since the units with that ability do so much better at resisting charges, so long as they are spread wide enough so their flanks are not open they are almost impossible for cavalry to beat unless you're something insane like Immortals. The fact the Hearth Troops still mostly won anyway really shows how tough they are even without their special formation.
ERE vs Parthia in OG Rome ERE = 1 x Imperial Household Bodyguard, 2 x Equites Catafractarii, 4 x Comitatenses Parthia = 1 x Armoured Eastern General, 4 x Cataphracts, 4 x Eastern Infantry, 3 x Slingers
Funny how the enemy cav didn’t switch to swords after the charge if they’re prolonging the fight… pretty sure most of these units have lance and swords… and yes they do switch weapons when ALT was pressed, kinda like the phalangite infantry or triarii 😅
Thanks for the comment. I'm sure they would. I can do that but perhaps not with this pair (bad for view numbers ;) Do you have some specific match-up in mind?
Thanks for the comment. You are quite right. For some of these tests I import units from vanilla to BI and vice versa. It can be done with rather minimal modding :)
The Problem is that cav shouldnt fight heavy infantry stationary. Charge and Retreat, then Charge again and so on would be a better tactic and would much likely been used.

Feels bad I didn't say anything about it in the post :(
Agreed on that :) Thanks for the comment.
I asked for this test and I personally thought the theory about charge bonuses being better in BI was BS. Now you've proven it. Myth busted.
Thanks for the comment. Yea, seems to be the case :)

Thanks for the comment. Agreed. :)
But, the saxons aren't in the vanilla game, they're only in barbarian invasion...
Had a feeling the hearth troops would win
Well felt ;) Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. Agreed, it would have been a rather cool feature if they did it automatically :)
could you redo this but instead of making the cav stick in melee have them cycle charge. i wonder if you do that maybe they''d' win more engagements.
Thanks for the comment. I'm sure they would. I can do that but perhaps not with this pair (bad for view numbers ;) Do you have some specific match-up in mind?
@ maybe legionary cohort and praetorian cavalry
@@jonathanle9841 Thanks for the comment. I will add that to TO-Do list :)
Wtf is even happening here. The Saxons aren't in vanilla Rome total war and the celts don't get praetorian cavalry. What is going on.

Does praetorian cavalry have an alternate weapon?
Thanks for the comment. Yea, they have a sword, which gives them a slight bonus to melee :)

Thanks for the comment. Agreed on that. Mostly this test was about testing if there are differences in game mechanics in vanilla and BI :)
Persian immortals vs gallic archers maybe? They use both Bows and Spears…. So… 😅
Sounds interesting. I will add that to TO-Do list :) Thanks for the comment.
Rome 1 👍
Indeed :) Thanks for the comment.
