The Philippine government is stepping up efforts to complete rebuilding the destroyed area in the southern city Marawi known as “ground zero” by the end of June. The current government had promised the city in the southern island of Mindanao would be completely rebuilt by the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, which is due to end on June 30, 2022. It has been five years since Islamic State-linked fighters took over the city in what is known as the “siege of Marawi” in 2017. The fighting left large parts of the city in ruins, with many families displaced and over 1,100 people killed.

yeah, rebuilding a city after a devastating war takes decades… it’s not gonna be overnight… but then once the rebuilding momentum gets its traction, and when community efforts get in the way, there’ll be no looking back… time will move on as well as life and progress…

It was snailspace this rebuild. Took between forever and never to remove mines and IEDs due to lack of proper equipments to do the job safely.
They resorted instead to rebuild destroyed homes away from ground zero where the mines were, of which only 150 homes of 2000 was completed last year, 4 years after the siege ended. In those 4 years the displaced families had to live in informal settlements with only basic facilities, while facing huge uncertainties as their complaints went to deaf ears. Not to mention those 150 homes were built by the UN funded mostly by Japan.
Now that his time in office is ending he is ramping up whatever 'redevelopment' he can salvage to safe face and take credit, now at least they can't blame him for not trying and of course his fanatic online supporters will fall in rope to his PR plan. He is infallible to them anyways.
Truth is dead in this country, the rich and powerful bends it and twist it to their will, and people joyfully swallow it up.

If I remember correctly, the new houses are built away from the war-torn brgy., so naturally all the zoning, sewage, piping work had to be in place before the house foundation is laid. Houses will be built quickly once those are done.

After that did the actual rehabilitation works begin, the government is pouring huge amount for rehabilitation works and it's gaining grounds already, I believe in few years time Marawi will be so vibrant that it can be a main tourist hub in Mindanao, nice view, nice people, marawi has it all.

If they want to progress faster they should help each other in stopping corruption, crime and terrorism. They should address safety issues for both Muslims and Non-muslims. A city will not progress if such problems persist. Lanao del sur has a potential of becoming a tourist spot. The weather out there is as nice as Baguio but the safety issues shrouds all the wonderful things it offers. Lake lanao and its neighboring rural areas has scenic spots yet it has been abused and its clealiness has not been taken care of.
