Yeah. This is just one of those silly internet trends that everyone hops aboard.. People love to be told what is good, what isn’t, who to worship, who to avoid, etc. etc.
My litmus test for a good musician is asking what they think of Malcom. I once played in an ACDC tribute where the vibe was "we'll just stick the shittier guitarist on the Malcom part" and it showed.
And not least by his brother. I've read in interviews at least a couple of times Angus saying that Malcolm was a better guitarist than him and that anything he could play, Malcolm could play too - and better! Although there's probably some humility clouding what Angus is saying, it's clear how much importance Malcolm's rhythm and songwriting had in the band.
The guitar was actually gifted to him by Harry Vanda( producer of early AC/DC) as a standard Gretsch Firebird and he did the mods himself over the years. You can see the evolution of the guitar in film clips. Harry Vanda also said it was the best investment he ever made.
Yeah, I mentioned the mods in the video and said that it started life as a red Firebird before he stripped it and did his own thing with it. Lot of history in that guitar.
During an interview Angus was asked how it felt to be one of the greatest guitarists in the world. His reply was I'm not even the greatest guitarist in AC/DC. For anyone not wanting to be in the spotlight it's a lot easier to identify with Malcolm than Angus. Let's be honest, it's hard to love a 4 minute song just for it's 20 second solo, but hard not to love a 4 minute song when it's get a fantastic rhythm guitar driving it from start to finish.
Malcolm Young? Say no more. I'm in 🤘 "Sin City", "Walk All Over You", "Beatin Around The Bush" some of my favorites. Hell, the entire AC/DC catalog is superb.
Sin City was on my brainstorm list for riffs! It was really hard to actually choose 5 riffs to be honest! He's got so many. I wanted to get big riffs in the video without going down the usual list of popular AC/DC riffs. That said... I did include Back in Black purely because of the space he leaves in the riff. I could have easily done 20 riffs and still not got everything awesome in there!
Malcolm was the heartbeat, Angus was the soul, Bon and later, Brian, were the spirit. I was fortunate to have experienced AC/DC from the early 70s with the old late night radio stations that played the things that were not on mainstream radio programming. It was a station out of Georgia, and picked up in Florida.
I read an interview with Angus Young many years ago and he said that he played the easy part and Malcolm had the difficult job keeping the tight rhythm
I wouldn't be surprised about that. Angus always loved how tight Malcolm was on stage. That's what I noticed when learning some of the riffs, there is a groove... but there is a tightness. He would downpick a lot too.
Thank you man! The G5222 is so good. I don't usually like this style of Gretsch visually, but it plays and sounds awesome. I'll be sad to see it go back haha!
My favourite AC/DC tune is Overdose from the 1977 Let There Be Rock album. Troughout the whole song the energy is increasing more and more. 2 great solos as well. Listen how at the beginning Malcolm and Angus are superimposing rhythm parts. Thx for this video, great stuff!
"Go Down" is good too.. The Whole Album kicks A$$!!! The first time I heard it in 1977, I knew that AC/DC was destined to be one of the Greatest Rock Bands in History!!!!! : ) I still love and listen to that Album when I run or workout..
its also interesting to note that on many tracks he plays amlost clean or on the border of break up. Less overdriven than we often think. His rhythm playing is more complex that manybof us think. The engine room of my favourite band. Great video.
Yeah they used way less gain than you’d imagine. It’s more about the power (brought about by volume) and the clarity. I’d love to hear how loud they would’ve played back in the day!! I bet it was insane!
@@LeighFugeGuitar- although I'm unfortunately not old enough to have heard them back in the day, I have some family members who did see them in both Australia and the UK. Apparently they were viscerally loud! My cousin said he could feel it through his body. And they were great gigs. (As a side note: my parents-in-law now live in a house just adjacent to where Bon died in a parked car on Overhill Rd in East Dulwich. R.I.P. Bon & Malcolm)
New sub here. Love it love it . RIP Malcolm you rhythm monster. I'm a born again beginner on the guitar, and decided to start learning some DC stuff. I learned that no matter how simple Malcolm's riffs seem, there are definitely NOT easy. Huge thumbs up Leigh 👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘☮☮☮
Hey Tim, welcome! Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! Malcolm was a rhythm monster! I agree with you 100%, you think on the surface that the ACDC riffs are easy, they look easy enough on paper, but when you dig into it, there are small subtleties that are really hard to nail. Little timing things, or feel things, that you can just read off a tab.
I heard in a video that classic rock songs are sometimes sharp or flat because they used tape in the 70's, and the tape speed was changed in the studio. I believe you are right. It makes a lot more sense that they all tuned together and were slightly sharp or flat to a common note but in tune with each other. It's so cool that Malcolm didn't care about having a pretty guitar. His was a workhorse! He just cared about sound, another good reason to tune to each other rather than each to tune to a common note. I never get tired of AC/DC. Great music for motivating one's self!
Thank you man! Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for checking it out. I'll have to check out your video on it too! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts from it!
Malcolm originally played lead when AC/DC frist started in 1974 but made Angus play lead because he prefered to play rhythm but on some songs Malcolm plays lead licks like Soul Stripper Show Business Can I sit next to you girl but if you listen to pre AC/DC Gorge Young Harry Vanda Angus and Malcolm recorded an album with the hook roll band and on that album Malcolm just shreds
I'm using this nice j rocket caliber 45 pedal paired with a 15 watt marshall mg15r. i know it is a simple transistor amplifier but playing at home and for being a beginner i could buy this. however I notice that the pedal changes the sound quite a bit despite being a simple amplifier and I use a gretsch g5222.
Thanks for checking it out! Glad you enjoyed. I think there are a load of AC/DC songs that get massively overlooked! They have some great stuff behind the big hits
In the Mid to Late 80's both Malcolm and Angus were using Wizards and on the Razors Edge tour they used Messa Boggie Cabs then on Ballbreaker they went back to Marshall Heads and Cabs
I'm a 98% rhythm player. Taking some time off because of tendonitis in my left hand. Last gig was an 8 year stint with a full orchestra plus a conventional drummer, bass guitarist, and my self on guitar at a mega church. 4 services every Sunday plus shows and musicals....Strings, Horns, woodwinds, the works. Never solo. Don't want to. Never too good at it. Never cared. Other guitarist would say to me, "Do you want the first lead break or the last?" My response, "You take both". I must be doing something right. They keep calling me back. Play a Strat with only the middle and neck pickups. NEVER EVER use that shrill ice picky bridge pickup. EVER. Took it out years ago and gave it to a friend who needed one when his took a dump when he had a gig that night. That was 12 years ago. Never replaced it. Switch position #1 is a kill switch, which comes in handy. Main amp for all those years was my Fender Super Champ. Sound guy either put a mic on me, or used the Line Out. No muss, no fuss. Rhythm Rules.
Thank you so much for this. I've been a fan for many years, and it's amazing that two brothers actually play the same instrument and write and perform together. Thanks for the insight, lessons and tab. God bless you.
They are fantastic value for the money. I have an Electromatic single cut that I don't really show on the channel, but I love it. I bought it 6 years ago and its such a great playing guitar.
They tuned to 440 for the most part. Some songs are slightly flat. This was common in some bands from the era where they might tune to a piano in the studio, so everyone is I tune with each other but they aren’t tuned to perfect 440 Sone AC/DC tracks like something like 1/4 tone flat.
that was brilliant advice!! I dont remember where i've picked this story up but there goes the story once in an interview Angus was called best rock guitar player in the world. Gretsch make some of the best guitars in that price point I think. I've played lots of Gretsch's and I own one from the Electromatic range too and I love it. They are always consistently solid and good feeling.
Those tones are spot on. I've always fancied a Gretsch Signature Malcolm Young, but it's a little pricey! Maybe I should get a G5222 and mod it to look like a MY easy enough :-)
The Gretsch Malcoms are like 15k haha! Not cheap at all!! This is a good alternative though, it's not quite the same... but it's a hell of a lot more affordable. Gretschs are rock solid too, they play great and sound great!
I actually got a G5222 double jet and absolutely adore it, there's not one single thing about it that doesn't impress. It's so nice , that as much as I would love to make it look like a Mally Young Gretsch, I just can't bring myself to change its looks/feel/sound. Maybe one day I will go "Malcolm" on it , but until then its such a nice instrument, I'll enjoy it for how good it is (as is ) . Did you decide to get the G5222? If so, what do you think of it ? Rock hard always dude :)
great video!! I’m very curious… can you do the same songs you presented here, with Angus version the way he does it? so I can see and hear the difference since I’m deaf and am proud ACDc fan! Thank you. @Leigh Fuge
Hey, Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I hadn’t planned to make a follow up to this video, but if enough people out there want me to do it then I‘m sure it might happen at some stage 😃
Wow really? I wouldn't be surprised! From the images of his original Gretsch, it's had a hard life! The Gretsch Custom Shop version of it looks AMAZING... but its $10,000 USD which is a hell of a lot of money! I'm sure it sounds fantastic though... but it's not cheap!
I read somewhere Angus said Mal was ferociously attached to the Beast. He was scared every time they toured something would happen to it. Supposedly, they had a roadie assigned to never let it out of his sight. It now rests with Mal, where it belongs. RIP, Malcolm. 😭 thanks for the music.
When Mark Evans joined akka/dakka in the 70s their head roadie told him ' It's Malcolm's band , don't EVER piss him off ... ' Mark was replaced in '77 after pissing both of the Young brothers off , I saw Cliff Williams first Aussie show at the Legendary Lifesaver in '77 . Williams didn't have a work permit and they were billed as ' Mystery High Voltage Act ' ... Apparently close to 3,000 in a room licensed for 1,000 ... I left thinking Malcolm was the star of the show . Angus and Bon entertained the punters , but Malcy WAS the band .
I love the rhtyhm part of "Gone Shooting". Do you think its just more drive (he often uses the knobs, so does Angus) or is he playing different chords.
Malcolm Young didn't buy the Firebird. It was given to him by Harry Vanda of Vanda and Young (Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young - Malcolm and Angus' older brother) fame. Harry Vanda famously said later that had he known the end results he would have given him ten firebirds.
The 45 Caliber pedal is good but imo the MI Audio Super Crunchbox V2 is THe best, and most versatile, Marshall in a box pedal. It does everything great from early Plexi through to modern Marshall high gain plus EVH brown sound. It's low noise, true bypass and cheap :)
Nope. Back in the early days there wasn’t many pedals on the market at all. They just cranked their Marshall’s! To this day Angus still gets his sound from cranking the amps up loud. He runs a preamp unit infront called a Solo Dallas but onstage he doesn’t have any pedals. He gets everything from riding the guitar volume
I talk about the amp settings at 6:50 in the video and more at the 12 minute mark. There is also a shot of the amp so you can see what I'm doing. It's set with the Bass on 1, Mid on about 6 and Treble on about 7 from memory. I had the amp clean and the 45 doing all the drive
Okay i play it through a marshall origin 5 and play it with TILT 5 mids Treble and bass are on 6 and the amp volume is real down @1,5. I use a gretsch g5222 with a TV jones powertron bridge pickup! Thanks a lot
Really informative video.Great tone! Thanks for posting For Angus Fans, I replicate ( on my channel) the Back in Black era pickups that Gibson don't make.
Absolutely! The DSL40 can easily get you into the AC/DC tone, but don't push the gain too hard. The DSL range has way more gain than the style of Marshall's that Malcolm would have used. You want to keep the gain low to retain the clarity of the notes.
You probably had this sorted out 8 months ago but for anyone else chasing this with a DSL40; A V30 goes really great in the DSL40c, on the classic gain channel with crunch engaged crank the amp up a bit more and dial back the master on the Gretsch by about 15%. The studio sound has less gain than their live tone on back in black etc so use the master on the Gretsch to control gain to taste
I don't believe Malcolm bought his Gretsch, I believe it was a gift from Harry Vanda, his older brother George's bandmate from The Easybeats and decades-long writing and producing partner.
Malcom was never overlooked by guitarists or fans of their music

Malcom Young. The Best.
Keith Richards was asked how it felt to be the best rhythm 🎸 player in the world he said I don't know you have to Malcom Young
Ask Malcom Young
Haha😂 awesome
Look it up in rolling stones magazine
I don't know about that but Keith loved Malcolm and ACDC, that is a known fact
If his guitar is as heavy as it looks, he could easily crush skulls with it. That is one THICK guitar.
The version of the guitar I used in the video wasn’t too heavy but I suspect Malcolm’s might have a bit more weight to it!
touch too much-the way the 2 guitars interlock is magnificent!
and jailbreak-malcoms guitar kicks ass!
great video!! I’m very curious… can you do the same songs you presented here, with Angus version the way he does it? so I can see and hear the difference since I’m deaf and am proud ACDc fan! Thank you. @Leigh Fuge
Hey,
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I hadn’t planned to make a follow up to this video, but if enough people out there want me to do it then I‘m sure it might happen at some stage 😃
@@LeighFugeGuitar Aww! How many you need to consider it? And thanks for the reply.
Its not hard, bridge pickup into a Marshall with all settings on 6, the rest is in the volume pot and the right hand.
Cool info Sir🤘🏽, I heard when they went to clone his guitar it was barely holding together making the luthiers nervous about working on it 😳.
Great video Leigh. The tones are spot on
Thank you man! This pedal is killer for Plexi tones!
I love the rhtyhm part of "Gone Shooting". Do you think its just more drive (he often uses the knobs, so does Angus) or is he playing different chords.
They’re playing the same chords. You’re hearing a filtertron pickup in your left ear and humbucker in your right. Perfect match up
Who exactly overlooked him?
Malcolm Young didn't buy the Firebird. It was given to him by Harry Vanda of Vanda and Young (Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young - Malcolm and Angus' older brother) fame. Harry Vanda famously said later that had he known the end results he would have given him ten firebirds.
A Gretsch into a marshall, not so much gain but a shit ton of volume and that's how you sound like him
Yep. Loud amp but volume down on guitar..
I wouldn't be surprised if Malcolm even had his Marshall amps modified. He had them sent out so the volume knobs would go from 0 to 11.
Rip MAL power chord master.
MALCOLM YOUNG= THE GREATEST RHYTHM GUITAR PLAYER IN ROCK HISTORY!! HANDS DOWN. PERIOD. END OF STORY. EVH AGREES!
If you want the sound get a gretsch and a marshal, preferably a valve -valve state will do. That's it.
After coming back from Britain , ACDC gifted their rig to The Angels
Didn’t know that! Cool little fact there!
The 45 Caliber pedal is good but imo the MI Audio Super Crunchbox V2 is THe best, and most versatile, Marshall in a box pedal. It does everything great from early Plexi through to modern Marshall high gain plus EVH brown sound. It's low noise, true bypass and cheap :)
malcolm`s intro to thunderstruck is what i call right hand rhythm-genius...the one `n only rock`n roll rhythm riff master..
So acdc didnt use distortion pedals?
That's so funny man, distortion pedals...
Get the full G in if you want blood. 3rd fret top string.
Which amp settings are you using with the caliber 45?
Thanks for posting
For Angus Fans, I replicate ( on my channel) the Back in Black era pickups that Gibson don't make.
great !
Could i get mal’s tone with my Marshall dsl40 im also getting a Gretsch double jet electromatic tomorrow 😁
Absolutely! The DSL40 can easily get you into the AC/DC tone, but don't push the gain too hard. The DSL range has way more gain than the style of Marshall's that Malcolm would have used. You want to keep the gain low to retain the clarity of the notes.
You probably had this sorted out 8 months ago but for anyone else chasing this with a DSL40;
A V30 goes really great in the DSL40c, on the classic gain channel with crunch engaged crank the amp up a bit more and dial back the master on the Gretsch by about 15%. The studio sound has less gain than their live tone on back in black etc so use the master on the Gretsch to control gain to taste
It appeared that Malcolm was standing in the most illuminated shadow of the
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll...
It is indeed! But if we wanna rock n roll we've got make the long journey! 😀
That guitar comes with broad tron pickups not filter tron pickups
Yup. That’s why I said “Filtertron Style Pickups” because the Broadtrons are based on the classic Filtertrons.
Australia's 13 year old TAJ FARRANT !
He’s such a great player
Nice tone ya got there!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
I don't believe Malcolm bought his Gretsch, I believe it was a gift from Harry Vanda, his older brother George's bandmate from The Easybeats and decades-long writing and producing partner.
Rick Parfitt and Malc were the best rhythm guitarists of that era. However, Parfitt had a great voice as well as a fantastic songwriter.
Sorry I’m OCD, please remove the top pickup of that Gretsch 😅
Haha! I don't think Gretsch would've been happy if I returned the guitar minus a pickup haha!
No biggie but his original guitar started out with 2 x filtertrons, then he added the middle humbucker, then removed it and the original neck pickup 👍
best Motor guy :)
"Let There Be Rock"!!!!! ; )
