Oh man - this video just appeared on my "you should watch this" list that was effen awesome - Malcolm Young, bless him, the undisputed engine room of AC/DC - that was the best AC/DC tutorial I have seen - subscribed
This has got to be one of the best-presented and best-thought-out guitar lessons on UA-cam. It's definitely the most fun. The jam session is the perfect way to put the material to immediate use.
This guy's a great rock guitar teacher, really understands the AC/DC vibe and what makes Malcolm's playing what it is. Awesome little interactive jam session at the end there, I'm gonna make use of this when I get home from work and pick up the guitar. Cool idea, wish more youtubers did that interactive jam session at the end of a virtual lesson lol. Great content!
Most people overlook the genius of the Young brothers ability to make music that was both simple and complex at the same time and still be relevant 40+ years later. Malcolm was truly the driving force of the greatest rock band ever. Rock In Peace Mal.....and tell Bon we said hi.....\m/
THAT-WAS-AWESOME!!!! Wish there were more lessons like this on UA-cam. This is definitely one of my favorite teachers on youtube, such a cool guy with a great vibe! Can't stop listeling to that solo at the end!
Brilliant! 1st time I've ever seen a camera angle from the players view point, from above. Every lesson should be shown that way! My brain just doesn't work the other way unless I already know how to play the song or chords. I'm still learning at 55 but I learnt most of what I know, when I was 15 to 21 ish. Never had lessons "officially". Our family grew up not far from where the Youngs lived, on arrival in Australia. My oldest brother said he saw AC/DC at a local pub before they used that name. Saw them at our Sydney Olympic Stadium when when Brian had couldn't sing. Most of the gig had a big screen with Bons voice & video dubbed over the bands live music. Saw GnR there too & to make up for the help, Angus played with them. It was The "Slash & Angus Show." Brilliant!
AC/DC always sounds easy but when I get to it I always realize that man, that groove is hard to capture. Then you come a long and do it effortlessly god damn it. All kidding aside, it’s the first time I watched a video of yours and it was amazing. You have ease and it helps. Great video indeed. Really helpful for me going into AC/DC songs. Thanks.
Well now, this is a real nice break down of some of his nuances. I knew a couple of them already but I also learned a couple of new ones from your tutorial, I’m glad I stumbled across your channel. Just subbed it as well here and thanks 🤙
I always had a hard time making the D/F# until I saw a UA-cam short showing you can use your thumb, it also was a AC/DC tutorial. That made playing a whole lot easier.
Amazing video. Casi no lo veo porque como es de Malcom en vez de Angus, un error que cometemos muchos. Hay que ver lo que hacía Malcom, era casi mas del cincuenta por ciento de la misma. Great teacher, wiht the subtitles help and my poor English I´ll try to undestand and learn the maximum. Thank you.
Wauw i saved this one for tomorrow to practice more.. found out that with that 3rd exercise.. changing my middle finger with my first finger was some problematic.. and.. even from this video i learned play the barre chords how they suppose to be..i could only barre all 6 strings with first finger..now i can just barrehigh E and B and the low E with my thumb and play E shape barre chords like that (and more that only needs highest 2 or 3 and low e string i think its A shape only that needs that.. but not sure st the moment. .but now it finally all make sense and fall in place..🎉🎉 thankssss
Awesome tutorial! Congratz on your great and easy to follow style! Would love to know what gear are you using and the exact Model of that beautiful Les Paul Classic!
Been playing acdc for years but this is just what i've been missing. Thank you. I'll get right onto it. Edit: I can play it like this now. H**y s**t. Thank you very much. That's a game changer, I can finally play like Malcolm. Not only the right hand, also the left. And you can play this forever and never get tired of it. I think I will apply to the course. Yours first and then I see there is a lot of other content.
In an era where shredding is everything, players really need to remember that rhythm is still crucial. Ac/dc is a key band that a newish guitar player can learn a lot of foundational techniques for being a well rounded player, as those grooves teach you a lot of tempo and groove. Learn this lesson, and play along with someone who can play some major scale leads, you're going to have a great time.
Really good tutorial. A lot of people seem to miss Malcolm's contribution to the sound and are focused in Angus. The key to their sound is the combination of both brother's respective sounds.
Get yourself some fat stings, like 11s or even higher and sting them up nice n tight. Think: acoustic. Now dont use too much distortion. Natural boost with volume is best. Basically it should be hard to use vibrato. Lol. Best way to practice Malcolm's precision and tightness and groove; play Mal's parts on Jailbreak or High voltage live. He sits on one chord to let Angus do his magic. Sometimes only 2 strings but brings up the tension with his brother so naturally. Theyll do this for like 5 minutes or more depending on Angus's shredding. And remember Mal will usually play low on the neck with open chords while Angus may play a bar/power chord or variant thereof. Together they sound massive! My favorite band of all time. i consider Malcolm young my guitar teacher. AC/DC LIVE video is my Holy Grail of guitar. The famous Donnington show. And Angus has the most beautiful black SG. great vid my dude.🤘
You had me searching for your lesson with this video! Learning “Malcolm’s rhythm techniques” I’m so in! Went to your site, not one thing about this topic at all. Am I missing something?
Your point about not playing too much is essential to this music. Even after many years of playing guitar, it's easy to try to add to much rhythm. But with this many distorsion (which is necessary here), one has to be very sparse as well as very precise - the muted palm notes have that function of adding additional rhythm and pushing forwards, but the chords themselves are where the accents are - this isn't acoustic guitar !
@@Pickupjazz Wow it actually sounds like an ACDC song! I thought it was weird that I didn't recognized it immediately since I'm a huge fan of ACDC. Thank you for the lesson 👌
Malcolm removed the neck pickup AND the middle pickup, leaving only the remaining bridge pickup. It’s crazy that his signature series guitars have two pickup holes in the guitar. 😂😂😂
There's a train of thought that each pickup affects how the strings vibrate, each will dampen the vibrations so by taking the neck pickup out he's trying to maximise the tone of each string. That ties in with removing the lacquer from the guitar body. Or maybe he kept hitting his pick on it?
That Gretsch had 3 pickups. He took out the neck and middle because he didn't use it. Also it's a chambered guitar so there was something about resonance too.

Possibly the best ac/dc tutorial ever. Helluva good job brother?
Wow, thanks!
not possibly - definately !😄
about 6:10 I paused the video and scrolled down to make basically the same comment!

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
As a drummer I would disagree. Kind of... ❤
Josh has that rare combo of being both a passionate teacher and incredible player!
The precision is the thing. I would normally never play without some reverb. But trying this exercise I have to turn it off completely. Love it!
This is such a clear and concise breakdown. Josh is an awesome teacher!🎸

If Malcolm said it was good, then I knew something is there. Angus. _You did an incredible realistic take of Malcolm._

Deceptively nuanced. Well constructed lesson, thanks!
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow. This unlocked the (now so obvious) trick to playing like Malcolm.Right hand so important. Great lesson. Malcolm was such an economic player!
Nice, go have fun with it!
your great
This just might be my favorite AC/DC style lesson now. I think the jam was a nice ‘real world” addition.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!

"Roots and 5ths" would be an excellent band name.
You're on to something....
Excellent...hope there's more ACDC \m/
Noted! 🤘
Please tell me where can I find the tabs for this solo????
Upon winning some rock mag best rock player Angus said "I‘m not even the best guitar player in the band."
Best writer.. Most overlooked!!

Thanks for watching! 🤘⚡️
Malcom not only playing also writing the songs... a genius
Cool video mate , do a Johnny thunders one
Does Angus use both pickups?

Learning “Malcolm’s rhythm techniques”
I’m so in! Went to your site, not one thing about this topic at all.
Am I missing something?
There's a Rock Learning Pathway. I presume that's what you're looking for.
Great Video. New Subscriber right here. 👋
Good video. Do you really need the little rascals hat?
Cool.., Bon Travail...!!!
Excellent work ty much appreciated. AC/DC nailed top to bottom. 😊
Rock on!
If you want blood is a perfect example riff for Malcolm’s technique and style
😁😁😁
Wow
🤘
Mega top 👌😊
What song of the exercise 2?
These exercises are inspired by how Malcolm Young would approach rhythm guitar.
That SG makes their sound.
That Gretsch...

What's the name of that song? I don't recognize it
This is an ACDC inspired jam from our Rock Learning Pathway 🤘
@@Pickupjazz Wow it actually sounds like an ACDC song! I thought it was weird that I didn't recognized it immediately since I'm a huge fan of ACDC. Thank you for the lesson 👌
@@King_Shark9 You can definitely hear parts of "If you want blood" and "Walk all over you"
Ac/DC Rock
Which AC/DC song is that? The only part I can kind of recognize is SHOOT TO THRILL, but that's not the whole thing.
I think he’s changed enough on purpose, so he doesn’t get shut down for copyright infringement.
After watching this I feel like getting rid of my neck pickup for good.
Malcolm removed the neck pickup AND the middle pickup, leaving only the remaining bridge pickup. It’s crazy that his signature series guitars have two pickup holes in the guitar. 😂😂😂
Not quite. He added a middle humbucker which wasn't originally in the guitar, then he removed it.
I don't understand taking out the other pickups. Can't you just turn them off? Isn't it the same?
i think he's reffering to the second coil of the humbucker
@@petchai4814 oh, I see. Thanks.
There's a train of thought that each pickup affects how the strings vibrate, each will dampen the vibrations so by taking the neck pickup out he's trying to maximise the tone of each string. That ties in with removing the lacquer from the guitar body. Or maybe he kept hitting his pick on it?

Is that an AC/DC song? If so which one? Or is that just a jam for the video?
R.I.P. Malcolm.
😇
Made Rock history playing 3 chords....
❤
Calidad
Like the Ramones, their sound is iconic.
Agreed!
When did Bill Steer lose his British accent?
Not sure why people say one of the greats of Rhythm. It's all guitar. We should say one of the guitar greats full stop.
