AC/DC's Best Rhythm Parts

  • Angus Young is probably the first name you think of when talking about the guitar playing in AC/DC. But there is a solid argument to be made that Malcolm Young’s guitar playing was just as important. Rhythm guitar is an essential part of their music and Malcolm was a master of laying down a rock-solid foundation for his brother’s lead guitar parts.
In this lesson, Kent will be going over some of Malcolm’s greatest guitar parts as well as a few ways you can nail his tone. If you’re trying to pick out Malcolm’s parts in an AC/DC song, they usually have Angus and Malcolm’s guitars panned to either side in stereo.

I agree Malcolm is the best rhythm guitar player. AC/DC's rhythm section of Malcolm, Cliff, and Phil is the greatest in hard rock music. From everything I have read and learned over the years Malcolm preferred to be in the background and let Angus, Bon, and Brian have the spotlight. AC/DC have aways and will aways be my favorite band of all time.

I think Angus admitted that Malcolm could play all of Angus’s parts but Angus couldn’t play all of Malcolm’s. Granted, Angus was playing his parts while sprinting and spinning on his back. Long story short, they complemented each other as perfect as it could be.

I think Malcolm's rhythm work is fantastic, but sometimes I feel like the comments act like Angus never played rhythm! Sure he plays the leads, but in most of the songs, Angus plays a complimentary rhythm part with Malcolm. Let's stop trying to figure out who the best guitar player in the band is and realize AC/DC is great because of the way they played together.

I love how both brothers have been asked basically the same question, and both answered that the other one was the greatest. There was an interview clip i saw where Malcolm, in all humbleness as ususal, was explaining how the world will come to see the master that is his little brother.. Cant remember which interview it was, but he was giving it all to his bro. And Angus, how he shrugs off statements toward him as being best, and gives it up to Malcolm. That in itself says so much.. They had to have to known what level they were really at, remained ever humble, spoke of each other as how true greats ought to speak.. So special to have 2 of them in the same band. "Real recognize real", they knew they were good at what they did

In my opinion it is important to keep some aspects in mind , if some guitar player wants to come close to ACDC's music and tone.
    1) Never use too much gain. Angus' and Malcolm's secret ingredients are high volume, strong fingers and the perfect match of both guitarist's tonal frequencies.
    2) Malcolm used a setup , which is perfect for rhytm guitar playing. If I know it right, he used a 13's set of strings.
The string choice gave him the right resistence for his physical right hand playing , and gave his guitar tone the deep growl we all loved to hear from him.
He didn't need string bending -- never -- . So he could use low fretwire, which makes rhythm playing easier to keep chords in tune.
    3) Angus' and Malcolm's Schaffer Vega unit's are important too. They give a boosted tone, but no high gain sound.
    I enjoyed your video 🙂

@@paulaeden5934 3 or 4 years ago I read in the german guitar magazine "Grand Guitars" a review about the Gretsch Masterbuilt Malcolm- Young- Tribute guitar. The author wrote something about a 13's set.
A 12' gauge is my choice on my personal Strat ;-)
I never had the chance to enter the stage before or after an ACDC concert.
I think the both guitarists discovered some day in the past that their wireless units work great as tone shaping tools too.
A little bit of boost , and a little bit of compression. ( Personally I'm a big fan of Fil , especially with his Schaffer Replica towers.)

Not particularly controversial, to be honest. Malcolm was the beating heart and driving force of AC/DC. The reason they were so successful was that while other bands hammered and thrashed, AC/DC had swing and groove, and Malcolm was largely the reason why.
This video didn't really give the best examples of Malc's rhythm playing. The main riff from Thunderstruck is good, but the chorus is better. Likewise, Shoot to Thrill. Listen to both of them - Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams play a constant, unchanging pulse while Malc plays single, ringing chords against the beat. So simple, so effective.

Trust me I am NOT a fan of the band...at all. However, you're tutorial and the simplicity of it all was spot-on! Great job.

If your not a fan, how do you know he was spot on? Cause as an avid Malcolm player, he really wasn’t.

Angus said Malcolm was a better player. I saw it in an interview.

No Malcolm most certainly did not add an extra tube to his amp. Not sure where you got that?? Stock Marshall Superbass head. He also didn't use that much gain. Just a slight crunch and a lot of volume.

Yeah ya don't need much gain when playin at high volume especially through their rigs!!!

Even Angus says Malcolm was a better guitar player than him and the only reason he didn't want to play lead is because it would take up too much of his drinking time 🍻💪🏼
I'd say that's a pretty damn Aussie attitude if ya ask me 👌🇦🇺🔥🔥🔥

Angus was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world. Angus laughed and said he wasn't even the best guitarist in AC/DC.

Anyone who is a big fan of AC/DC , I believe, would agree with your first statement. He may have been in the shadows but Mal WAS AC/DC.
