The saddle is probably WW 1 but that just means it's 10 x more comfortable than the re-pops made today. Unless you know Cav tack, you can't tell. Great looking set up man!

Get a Cold Steel 1860 saber, it's rated for live steel combat and has a lifetime warranty. I've broken 3 of those El Cheapo Sutler Row sabers in my 10 years in the hobby, (the first two I broke were sabers of my young peers when I was a teenager) and none of the guys were ever pissed, they only asked where I got mine! Hope this helps. "Keep your cinch tight, reins slacked, and your revolver clean."

Hello Friend, just discovered you. I am a dyed in the wool Yankee, but I would add, that being such, I never in my heart even considered that that would mean that I was not for All Americans and the Endlessly Honorable Heart that has endlessly been displayed by our collective lineage. My very first book report was on West Virginia. This was in first grade, back the 1970's. I had a feeling in my heart that they were being forgotten. So, I at 7, chose to champion them. I wonder, does this mean I was a traitor to American Hearts? Long have I often stated, "There is nothing like a Southern Gentleman." Should this truth be lost? I say, "Nay." Do you remember the story of the Japanese Soldier who never heard the war was over? For endless years, every hour, he fulfilled his duty. He shined his shoes in the jungle as best he could, his belt buckle. he cleaned his rifle. Unto Death was his creed, for love, not even for honor. Truly, I say, "The Soul of the Samurai Lives in the South." Your steadfastness to Chivalry shall no longer be dismissed by souls who have never been friends of God's Dream - His Holy dream that is America.

How do you keep the canteen from bouncing around as the horse moves?

Just wondering where you come from because of your slang...?
Isn't the canteen a bouncing problem when galopping?
Anyway, I like your overall style!

I always wanted to be in a Cavalry Regiment but I don't have the supplies, any ideas on where I can purchase such needed items?

I realize that what a cavalry man is supposed to her worn and what he did wear are at odds. I have to question though the disposition of the weapons on the horse, rather than yourself. The carbine was carried on the trooper, and on a sling with a swivel hook. The proper carbine has a bar on the side with a ring to take the hook. The saber was carried on a belt which also took the cartridge box, cap box and side arm. The canteen was supposed to be carried by the trooper on his body. I guess so he had a supply id he had to dismount and fight on foot. In addition troopers carried a haversack with spare clothing and mess kit, a haversack with items to look after his horse. A picket pin, a blanket or a great coat. The system of carry was not ideal, and caused health problems for the trooper. The Sharps would most likely have been an 1959 model rather than an 1863. The confederacy made a copy of the Sharps that deleted the auto-cap reed mechanism, so they had to carry caps for carbine and revolver. Typically a trooper would carry forty rounds of ammunition for his carbine. It must have been a very hard life. My wife's great great grandfather was in the 9th Alabama cavalry, and was captured at Missionary Ridge.

Well, thats what all books say, and what the perfect trooper should look like. But who says that all troopers where perfect and according to the regulations?

i thought civil war saddles were black they went to brown in 1904

Civil war McLelland saddles were bare rawhide with black skirts and fenders, most Jennifer and Grimsley saddles were black. Post CV McLelland saddles were covered in black leather over rawhide until finally came the 1904 Model covered in russet leather, which are the ones commonly encountered.
