Could you go over horse armor? There is not much information on UA-cam about that.
Oh yes please!
That would indeed be great. So you think it was custom-made for each horse, or rather stock items in different sizes? I really wonder, as knights had more than one destrier at their disposal? Which would be logistically a nightmare to carry several sets of horse armour? Maybe you could go a bit more in detail? Have you ever seen full horse barding in use nowadays?
Please
@@SandraOrtmann1976
As there would hardly ever be more than 5 war horses at any place and time having amor altered would have been an option too but prefabrication in general hardly applied to luxury items before 1800
You could keep patterns, though, and probably would. "Pricked" parchment or cloth was a common way to do it.
I love how calm and gentle are with your horses, both on the ground and whilst riding. It's also great to see how passionate and knowledgeable you are about medieval history ❤️
As someone trying to accurately represent medieval horsemanship in their comics, your videos are worth their length in gold. Excellent job as always!
What's your comic called? I'm around for similar reasons, though I'm not even past script writing yet xD but I'd love to read others that take interest in the medieval
@@ObsessedwithZelda2 it doesn't really have a name, yet. I'm not 100% happy with it's plot right now, but I'm putting a lot of effort into it for now. Mine will be the fantasy side of the Medieval world. With dragons and witches, but as accurate to medieval practices as I can get.
@@Anubis30224 Fair enough! Fantasy medieval is my personal favorite way to do it. I mean, what's medieval times without a dragon, or seven? Do you post your art anywhere then? I might try to follow if you do/if it's a site I use
Sounds delightful! I'm similarly writing rules and details for what's intended to be a historically realistic tabletop role playing game, and these videos help so much!
@@ethancordray8006 oh wow! I'm actually running several Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, right now. If you ever want it play tested, I'd be happy to! My groups are all literature/history buffs, so they'll probably love it!
Mr. Dibbs rolling around at the end was everything!
Mr. Dibbs is a dangerous and frightening animal in unskilled hands, but that was hilariously cute at the end.
@@patrickturner6878 lmao 😂😂😂 hes been working with horses since he was like 16
@@BluesManSteele I know. Mr Dibbs is one of those "Don't try this at home." things. I grew up around barrel racing and his stallion is bigger and more powerful than most of the animals I've seen. Very spirited and I could also tell it was the type of animal that only an expert should own or ride. I am an experienced rider and I wouldn't go anywhere near that animal lol
@@patrickturner6878 Not claiming dibs (AU=possession) on such a fine, carefree & headstrong creature. The horse is wondrous, too. /joke /sarcasm.3rd best YT channel ever.
Since I was eight years old!
i absolutely love how calmly you handled mr. dibs. i've unfortunately seen many people treat their horses wrongfully just for having a little energy. it's truly amazing watching you work with such a beautiful horse with so much potential
Thank you!
I'm not into medieval history, knights, or even into horses in particular but I love to watch your videos just for how skillfully and gently you handle your animals.
Thanks
I stumbled on this channel purely by happenstance. I love Medieval Times. Not many people take the time and the effort to describe things as you do. I think my favorite episodes or when you go into detail about the types of cooking and the different types of meals the different classes would eat.
Jean Durham I agree. The horses are fab, the armor stuff is interesting but the other bits & bobs on daily living are fascinating
@@kc218 many people that I know or great way off into history. I love looking into the night, the armor, the Weaponry, the horsemanship that these people had is outstanding. The one thing that seems to be left behind in a lot of other programming oh, it's the way they lived from the Kings to the Earl's to the Dukes the knights their vassals everyday life. That is what draws me in
*Joergen didn't die*
He just respawned in our world
True legends never die.
Duchi he turned into mr dibs.
OMG 😂😂
Duchi yeah and we’re is the helmet 😆
I love the way you stay calm and don't get upset with him acting up. Calming and gentle, just as they should be treated! Great video! ❤️
I loved that you were “real” when riding. There are so many videos out there that are edited when their horse is acting a bit hot and excited.
It shows off your great horsemanship as well! Kudos!!
Mr Dibbs is beautiful, but clearly not the easiest horse to work with. With such a handsome sire, it’s no surprise that Gossamer is a beauty as well, even without having seen her dam.
He's a stallion. Stallion's are their own trip.
@@heather173
A stallion with a hard past, from what I’ve heard, making him a lot more independent and less trusting than, say, Talos, who has never known anything other than love. I’m glad Mr Dibbs is with Jason now, who is both very good with horses and cares tremendously for their well-being.
@@ragnkjaI'm new to this channel. 1st time seeing Mr Dibbs.
What a horse! Blacks just melt my heart. What was his past? And can you remember a video Mr Dibbs is being used in at more than a walk, so I can watch it 100's of times? Thanks
@@shonamcwilliam2842
I don’t know the details, but Jason has said Mr Dibbs has a difficult history, and from what I understand that’s sadly relatively common for spirited stallions. He’s been in his current loving home for more than a decade, fortunately.
@@ragnkja Thanks for that.
We've got a foot of snow on the ground here and spotted neighbor's horses rolling in it making "snow angels." Mr. Dibbs would have loved it.
I"m always blown away how you care so much how you care for the horses. You are an awesome and intriguing person.
That close up on his eyes like he's saying hi there and thinking what kind of things he'll be getting into next. What an intelligent and beautiful stallion
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think Jason should be knighted just so he could go to Buckingham Palace in full medieval regalia!
Jason could be on his way to becoming a Knight as he's already an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). So who knows✌🏻
As long as it doesn't take place in parliament, where you're not allowed to wear armor.
He is. He was knighted by the Queen.
@@anyascelticcreations As far as I know he received an OBE in 2012 but no further honours as yet.
@@Vonatar74 I looked it up. You're right. OBE is apparently pretty cool, though, and definitely an honor to have. 😊 But You're right. Apparently it is different than a knight.
Mr. Dibbs is such a fine horse in his lines and deportment; that coat - ! Mon dieu, it's as glossy as a bowl of plums. I thoroughly enjoyed your interaction with that grand horse.
I think you're quite right about the saddle proximity to his crest.
The saddle itself is exquisite. There's certainly something to be said about custom-made items; yes, expensive, but the workmanship and detail poured into many of those items can still be enjoyed to this day. There are some wonderful examples of 15th & 16th century saddles in the Wallace Collection.
Thank you so much for another delightful episode, and I hope we see more of Mr. Dibbs (although all of your horses are handsome creatures and with distinct personalities!).
Have you any horses - a Paso Fino, for instance - trained to amble? It would be lovely to see you demonstrate this in addition to the warhorses. As a knight, I feel sure that you should have some amblers as well as destriers.
I love his videos with the Mule, lol!
that horse is truly a magnificent creature, probably also because of your gentle handling. Love seeing you work with the horses.
Another beautiful horse! It's fascinating to see how physical historical designs, like this saddle, reflect both the technology and social organization of their times. I love how you mentioned that the saddle adjustments presuppose that you've got a crew of servants to control the horse and adjust the fittings to the situation you're in. The role of squires and pages in supporting a knight in the field becomes so much clearer when you see the gear they were working with. Thanks so much for this video!
Mr Dibbs - as you no doubt know - is gorgeous. And he is so well behaved when he's excited about trying something new! Not something you can take for granted in a stud horse!
You are such a wonderful horseman ! Kind, firm & ending on a positive note.
It is so awesome that someone that is teaching history is so skilled with an intact stallion !
He is a Magnificent animal.
I agree with maybe an inch or so backward...gets off his neck and frees his shoulder up for maneuvers. he s such a well behaved stallion even with energy pent up!!
He seems to be sensitive but respond well to cues! Such a nice boi.
I thought about that and saw your comment a minute later
I smiled all the way through this because Mr. Dibbs is so full of life and of himself. Wonderful to see! 💕💕💕
he's a force of nature, that's for sure!
I love how you don't whip the crap out of the horses to get them to listen
I squeeled when I saw Mr Dibbs had his own line in the credits. Very informative film, I shall have to rewatch when I've got over my major case of 'awwwwwwwwwweeeeeee' so I can actually take some of it in. The was just so lovely seeing you respect his character as you do.
he ALWAYS gives the horses top billing and i love him for it.
"A New 14th Century Knight's Saddle". Now that's an interesting statement ^^
Thank you for the video, you're a true source of inspiration to many of us.
I have been around animals of every species since I was in my crib & I have a great respect for Mr. Dibbs. When you understand why animals behave the way they do, you can manage even a feisty one.
He's mostly gentle, but can get himself all fizzed up then you have to be careful that he doesn't hit you by accident.
I love your manner with him. Really nice to see how you calmly deal with his energy
Your horses are beautiful, and obviously very happy!
Absolutely love how you work with your horses! So calm and patient and understanding. Can really see the bond you have with each of them. Lovely to see such a connection, wish more trainers would approach things the way you do!
Thanks, I try to remember patience is a virtue.
Your the first one I've seen to give their horse a good roll after a bit of work and that's awesome 👍
What a gorgeous horse. I'm glad you didn't edit out the roll at the end. I look forward to seeing you test out the saddle alterations.
Please never ever stop making these videos. Not only are they informative and engrossing, but they are just plain fun to watch! You have a knack for answering the questions I've often had about those days gone past. Much love from Texas!
It’s always so wonderful to watch you working with your horses. You obviously care a great deal about them, and it shows.
He said: "You are nice and quiet now" and I saw Mr. Dibbs eye whites when he rolled them 😁 (At 9:32 )
MAGNIFICENT HORSE!!!
And he is extremely well behaving!!! His energy is bent up, but he listens you SO WELL! Very impressed and really beautiful to watch you two working together!
❣️💯
It's been said by everyone, but I thought i'd just through my two pence in. Your channel is amazing, the content you cover and effort you put in is second to none, and your bond and friendship with the horses is fantastic. Keep up the quality work!
I love how well you know your horse, that he'd want a good roll so soon. That was great!
You are so calm with your horses and so gentle it’s incredible
My only experience with horses is riding a pony once 25 years ago, yet Jason's pedagogical skills are so good I could grasp everything that was going on in that video..
Thanks for an amazing channel that just keeps on delivering !
A few minutes in the morning with a new video from Jason sets the tone for the whole day. I found your channel midway between reading Bernard Cornwell's 11 book series, The Last Kingdom. Your videos complement the series nicely, giving both more depth and showing the common humanity we share with our ancestors.
Such a beautiful animal with so much spirit I always love seeing your mounts every one of them makes me smile for their own reason.
Love these videos, you can tell this is his passion. Apart from all the interesting facts and whatnot, it's just great to see someone truly enjoying themselves!! Cheers to hopefully many more years of you enjoying your craft
Dibbs is gorgeous, and his gaits look so smooth to ride. Looking forward to future vids of the two of you.
What a gorgeous stallion, and a lovely saddle! Great work as always, and such a delight to be brought along with you as you test and try out new ideas and old techniques.
I love how you don't edit these vids to death you show how full of energy He is. Cheers!
Wow, great video. My first time seeing you or Mr. Dibbs. He is an absolute beast in the best way.
I dont know many western riders with their hands that high, we like to keep them very low and close to the horse's neck so as to show them to relax their head and neck. Still a beautiful horse and I love these videos! Keep up the amazing work.
Don't worry Mr Dibbs, slightly crazy is my favourite kind of horse ;) What a magnificent stallion his coat is beautiful!
Another great video Modern History team! I especially enjoy the way you interact with the horses Jason. Can clearly see the mutual respect and love you share.
Too often our equine friends are left in the background or just there as prop pieces so the human can show off but you make it seem like its as much their time in the spotlight as it is yours. Much respect ✌
Cant wait to see what you give us next. Always great quality 😊
I learn something from every single one of your videos. Thank you for doing the research and for passing on the information in such a manner that is easy to listen to, and to digest as well.
Beautiful saddle! And very well trained horse. Well done! 👍 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching
Thank you very much for another amazing video, sir. Your stallion is magnificent and your relationship with him is fabulous!
I have seen horses roll around many times but never knew why. So I looked it up. Drying sweat and stretching are great reasons for a great roll in the hay! Well played Mr. Dibbs!
Horses also grow and shed winter coats, and a good roll is a great way to loosen and remove some of that itchy excess coat as it starts to shed! They also just plain enjoy it, it's fun and feels good to them.
I just love the way he looked so happy!😊
If i were not in Australia i would gladly offer myself as a groom for you! I love how knowledgeable you are, and how much you clearly care for your horses
I didn’t see him as a crazy horse at all. He knew exactly what you wanted from him he was just fresh. 🖤
I request more videos with Mr Dibbs.
About an energetic stallion. Dad had an oval swimming pool constructed that had an island so the horse had to swim in a padded lane, he would stand in the center of the pool to lead the horse and motivate it to swim. It didn’t take long to get the horses to tire and become somewhat less difficult to work with. It was also a great therapeutic tool.
you could also lunge the horse before riding to get the same result
The point isn't to tire a horse every time you want to ride him. You have to learn how to channel their energy correctly
Good video and surprise ending.
Mr. Dibbs is lovely, what a beautiful head and face he has.
Mr Dibbs rolling around having fun! ❤️😁 🐴
one has to use modern techniques
"doing it yourself"
😅
Oh, he's GLORIOUS! What a pleasure to ride something with spirit
Mr. Dibbs is so beautiful he brings tears to my eyes!
Very flashy horse! Any knight would be proud to show off Mr Dibbs.
Mr Dibbs reminded me of my saddlebred. He is adorable with personality. Thanks for showing him🥰
What a stunning horse! So interesting to see what goes into the making of a saddle.
I'm pretty new to this channel and have to say that you sir....are indeed a Sir. Thanks for what you do, I've recently started HEMA after witnessing you and others
Good luck with your HEMA studies.
Love your presentations, your detailed reasoning, and of course the videography, amd horsemanship
Omg, I love it! This spooky looking pitch black stallion... and his name is Mr. Dibbs! Adorable
I’ve seen him referred to by a more formal name as well, but I can’t remember what it is.
Re the saddle. I watched a video about how King Richard III would have managed riding a horse, especially into battle, given his extreme scoliosis.
A person was found with much the same problem and he found that the saddle, sort of similar to this one, was actually quite comfortable and supportive
yes, i was in that documentary and know the chap, Dom Smee, fairly well.
Well done Mr. Dibbs! And kudos to the saddle craftsman and Jason and Kasumi of course.
Love your channel. Amazing content. Can you do a video about bits? I always see you riding in some sort of leverage bit. It would be great to learn about medieval bits and how they have varied over the years.
my first reaction was: "does this mean they were catering to riders who wouldn't practice?" ,,, but then I thought, if you plan to be taking lots of hits, jostling around in a formation, and otherwise having your balance tested, every advantage might keep more riders on their horses.
I prefer medieval saddles to English or Western. Much more relaxing. I spent 4 years on the jousting team at Sands Point and loved it. But we were riding gelded Percherons and Belgians.
oh?
You lucky git.!!! What an amazing opportunity you've had.
Not many people can say oh, I was part of a jousting team! Or oh, I joust for fun because I'm crazy lol.
Mr. Dibbs is stunning! Enjoyed the video, thanks so much!
Feisty buddy! Very handsome! I love these videos so much, very nicely made.
Beautiful and energetic stallion ! Very nice explanation! Thank you!
Mr Dibbs is gorgeous, i have just found your videos and find them fascinating and so informative
Glad you like them!
@@ModernKnight i love them, so i'm watching all of them, love the horses, wish you had a profile of all of them
one day I might try to do exactly that. A video of each horse, background, what they're good at, what they are like etc.
@@ModernKnight Love the concept for a video. Hoping that you get to do it. I would definitely watch it and would love for it to be a long one. Looking forward to seeing all of your mounts. (I have been watching your videos for months really enjoy them very much. UA-cam has me using my son's profile. I can't figure out how to sign out of his and sign into mine.)
Once again Sir knight, wonderful care for your horse :) you are a credit to your craft thank you.
Thank you kindly
You are a man of many cool interests. Good video.
OMG he is stunning!!!! I’m such a sucker for a feisty stallion..... that saddle is so fascinating, thanks for sharing it with us!
he's just so delighted with the fact that you guys are Doing Things, I want to laugh. What a good boy. He just wants to Do.
My goodness Mr Dibbs is a gorgeous horse. No wonder Gossamer is so beautiful. You are so gentle 😊
What a beautiful Horse and such a kind owner.
For some reason, watching a horse roll around on the ground is really satisfying.
You are such a kind human ❤️ beautiful stallion! This made my day
What a beautiful animal! I always get a kick out of seeing these enormous and graceful animals roll around on the ground.
Wow, magnificent stallion. Just gorgeous.
Mr. Dibbs is pure joy to watch
This channel is absolutely great! Good sir Jason could you please do more videos about medieval cuisine? It would be even better to learn some recipes.
Interesting point about the stirrups. I never thought they had to be made different for soft-soled shoes.
💜🦄 it is quite evident that because you are so kind and reassuring with your horses, all they want to do is please you 🐎
Oh he is gorgeous and shows how kindly you handle your horses. People forget horses change shape with the seasons, how much work, so many things
would be neat to see an episode with the saddle maker and learn the details of their craft
Another great video and just an incredibly beautiful horse, sir.
I love how you insert the horse's name in the credits.
The horses always get top billing.
I know exactly how much concentration a spirited horse needs. He's very well mannered and and he is listening.
I'd like to try this style of saddle. Mr dibbs rolling at the end! What a beautiful horse
And with this I've officially watched all videos from your channel! A magical and interesting journey.
