- In WWI when the first Light Horse mounted infantry arrived in the Middle East both horse and trooper were required to carry everything they might need out on remote desert patrol and they had to be 100% self sufficient. This video shows what the horse carried.
Those poor horses. You've done a wonderful job of showing how much they were laden down. Thank You.

I can understand the great coat. I've slept in the Egyptian desert in November - cold!
That bandolier looks handy. I found some on eBay and from a company called James Saddlery Australia.
There's also references as these being used as props in Star Wars.
wow - did not know about that star wars reference, yep, James saddlery is one of our 'big' ones, in heart of cow working country ... and yes, any desert, sun sets and all that heat is gone ... off with the Star Wars crowd ha ha .. cheers cobber
👍
Incredible what those animals endured, only to be left behind or destroyed. What a tuff little horse the Waler is.
they were tough and hardy and endured ... and then abandoned ... very very sad ... but thanks for the comment, very much appreciated cobber

Many many thanks for the support for this video. I has created a bit of 'hate' feedback, spoiled a few family 'myths' but mostly the feedback and support is great all this time after the video was made. Cheers all :)

This was one of my first videos. I was so serious. I should redo this. In my spare time (insert demented laughter)😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🐴😂😂😂😂

Very educational...everything needed for the horse and a bit for the rider. I know you may cover this in another video, however new to the channel and wondered if the .303 was an Enfield. Thanks again!
Australian Army in WWI used Le Enfield .303 yes but the rifle was also made under licence in Australia in the Lithgow munitions factory (which still makes guns today) these were called the Lithgow .303 but were identical in every way ... the one I have (and I am very lucky to have it) is a 1918 Lithgow made very late in the war and never sent overseas .... hope that helps cobber .... cheers
great video
much appreciated mate, thanks

They really travelled lightly. I noticed recently that in just ten years WW1 L/H bandoliers have tripled in price.
that is very interesting about prices, I went mad and decided to buy everything I needed all in one hit in 2013 - still got all the receipts in one thick file ... BUT I have never added it all up ... too bloody frightened to ha ha

Love this mini doco Steve and Cody ! Can you advise of the actual 'weight' that the horse endured carrying all this equipment? Loby Lodge Andalusians
that is very interesting and is also a good lesson to me Tammy, I had intended to check the weight so I could mention it in video but forgot - so I am honestly really pleased you asked because it is a lesson learned, I should have been better prepared ... will let you know when I double check because it is a multiple thing, horse gear, horse rider (average) and rider's equipment .... but I want to get it right thanks again
Such an old version of I need to do an update. Bare with. 👍👍
The Rhodesia " Grey Scouts " used the McClellan saddle. What is your view of that saddle ?
what is my view of that saddle, I'd say ha ha but you would misunderstand, I say ha ha because my fingers have been poised so many times to buy one from the USA .... I really like them but how many saddles can one family have, we have maybe 20? .... will get one one day ... hmmm, maybe that will be my 70th birthday present to myself .... :) hope that answers the question :) (purchase hesitation is due to ridiculous $ exchange rate, postage, government taxes etc, virtually doubles the US price)
Michael Watson can you please give your opinion .
what, no quart pot? ....
no, but I want one! anyone?....anyone?.....
@@CodyandSteveDownUnder good luck with the hunt :)
@@VeniceBitheBeach cheers
hi were do you get your equipment from ?
cheers cobber ... Lawrence Ordinance Sydney ... hope that helps, cheers
@@CodyandSteveDownUnder cheers yeah i had a look there but no gear for the horse brought all my uniform from there though
@@polarbearairsoft7775 ah, okay, so all the head gear (leather) I got from Down Under Leather which strangely is in the USA ... but that was 6 years ago .... the military bit, stirrups and spurs I bought from a bloke doing gear for 2014 reenactments but he is out of the game now .... the saddle is easy, still made in Indai, should be easy to find one on internet - $295-375 ... hope that helps?
@@CodyandSteveDownUnder thanks a million
