My dog keeps me calm, others need ESA too. I'm finding too much judgement online about this, which makes it worse for people who need ESA. Yes, some abuse it, but many need it.
I have been studying this issue for a long time-as a dog lover and RN you should have interviewed me! The Doctor you had on was much more of a LandLord than an expert in emotional support/ service animals-In the US there are lots of interesting things inFLA and NY Next time you do a show on this-call me-My dream? Is to setup a Legal charity (of course you will need to help me set it up) I want to bring unconditional love(aka dogs) to see inpatients elderly etc. MD is incorrect there are plenty of studies showing the positive physical effects of pets. I also know insurance and legal ‘responsibility’ is necessary-I am well versed on why this topic is unclear-and Likely to stay that way. Also there are laws in place that will be a problem going forward for your MD landlord guest-if he runs into someone like me-who has studied the gray area (the entire issue is grey) Molly Salyard RN

I have 2 dogs one is emotional support and the other is service dog...I got my documents off line and I got evicted from my apartment now me and my dogs are homeless and sleeping in my car in Columbia Sc...i don't know what to do..I have been homeless now for 2 weeks..I can't work now because I have nowhere to go with my babies..if they go to pound they will put them to sleep 😢

Too many people abuse the law on ESA animals
I am will do register my dog so he cames everywhere I will go. I am an widow and I have bispolar deficiency. I am lot of anxiety attacks
Can you evict the ESA if the dog has caused destruction to house and unsanitary conditions? What about allergies or noise to other tenants sharing same house?
Esa animals are very well maintained and behaved usually ? Great question !
When you have a disability like PTSD Animals are sensitive and develop according to how you react, like crying I've had 2 cat's that have gotten extremely upset and started to meow at a frantic pass and take their paw to pull it away from my face and gotten real close to my face as if to feel your pain! Training can only go so far they develop an awareness when their person is sad and down! They also lower blood pressure & since I had a brain hemorrhage stroke a year ago and before the year was up another regular stroke that affected my speech for 7 hours! I have PTSD and I lost my Angel kitty that slept with me every night and while she was dying with no warning I didn't sleep, eat and I definitely shouldn't be driving! I could feel the adrenaline running through my face and I had absolutely no reasoning, Vet's need to understand that they're dealing with the human patient as well! They need to be more accommodating and basically make reasonable accommodations! This one I can't move on 11 days and because this one didn't feel confident doing a certain procedure but they wanted me to travel 3 hours away and pay triple which adds to this devistating end when you're on Social Security you can't rack up your credit cards and pay the bills! Hopefully it will change for Disabled Senior citizens!

I did clearly didn’t research this topic. You can’t charge tenants deposits or more money because they have a ESA Dog or Therapy dog. This was more opinionated
@@keepingupwithmarsha5155Yes you can charge for a therapy animal, they are not esa or service dogs and do not work for one person, they only work with many people in institutional settings.

It's not a joke. I have the proper papers and landlord is saying get out in 3 days she's in for a battle and it's not close to funny is you have a disability.

I have an ESA dog. I got certified through an online agency. I am so thankful to be able to have my dog with me. I also have obedience trained my dog which is a plus as he has earned his Companion Dog (CD) and also his AKC Canine Good Citizenship titles.

I have a ESA animal which is a 10 pound Toy Poodle. Even though I work full time, my dog is with me every day and "works" beside me in my role in the health care industry. The patients at my facility love him as much as I do. My Primary physician who has worked with me for several years has written a letter of prescription to my landlord and my employer in regards to my dog being an emotional support animal and I have had no issues with that. When I went to the person who did my taxes, even after presenting the letter the tax preparer, the individual refused to take that information for my tax statement and add it on to my return. The person who prepared my taxes said the only way I could use the expenses for my ESA was if I had a "true disability" such as fully trained Support animal for someone who was blind, seizures etc. Should I find another tax preparation provider and give them my information again and file an amendment for last year's taxes and include the information on this year's taxes?

If someone has mobility issues, a LL is required to provide "reasonable accommodations" such as allowing the tenant to put in a ramp. But the LL can require them to pay for restoring the property to the way it was BEFORE the ramp. I've even heard of requiring the tenant to put down a deposit to cover for the eventual restoration.
Why can't the same be true for the ESA? "You need a dog, I'll provide your reasonable accodation: I normally would not allow animals at all but I'll allow you to have one if you provide a deposit."

I allow pets and request a lability insurance that covers their dog and meet the dog before approving. Can you require that with a ESA animal?
Yep my Doctor would gladly give you a referral and I've always had a renters policy & cat's do 0 to Minor damage

I could legally get papers for my Pomeranian to be an esa cause of my anxiety etc but I would prefer to just rent where he’s allowed and pay my pet deposit like everyone else. Just because i have a condition doesn’t mean I should be acting like an entitled person taking others right’s away

I’ve ended up on the wrong end of UA-cam. Laughing about disabled people needed accommodations is crazy. Also? Asking someone to PROVE they’re disabled ? Wild. Y’all need to go talk to some people below your tax brackets. It’s very clear that all you see when you look at potential tenants is someone trying to “getcha”. T well not so simple anymore you have to have a relationship with the doctor or anybody that can assess the person has an actual stress anxiety PTSD to pressure or anything based on a mental health capacity and that's it if you would prescribe her a pill or to go to a therapist then you can prescribe the dog signing the letter only verifies that she doesn't have a disability but she has a condition I bet connector to the dog that has to be a Nexus so she needs a dog to comfort her when she's stressed by petting him she needs a dog to alert her when somebody's at the door cuz she has PTSD she has claustrophobia whatever whatever it is not a service dog but it provides comfort to her comfort rather than taking a pill or doing drugs or anything like that that a doctor would prescribe based on his oath you could prescribe this and you have no liability because you're not saying that you gave her the dog you didn't buy her the dog you didn't train the dog her mental health to have the dog you don't have to disclose much because it's private and you're going to get sued if you guys don't learn these things and you do not give it give her this can be descriptive the doctors have to do this what is the big deal I'm getting tired of these I have one and I'm getting evicted now and mine is legit now you have to have a 30-day relationship with the therapist fine it's been a year and my landlord has been giving me the other back and forth because it's the Ada fair housing and HUD rules we have also rights to be held and she can't kick us out because of a animal especially if there's other animals and because mine's a pitbull if everybody knew that pitbulls were the number one dog that make the best service dogs and emotional support animals so there good luck guys you don't be scared you guys need to help people because what's happening in this world the county wouldn't even you know how many therapists I've gone to that won't f****** sign it because they work for the county why do we go to them for them if they're going to refuse to when the ones that that should be doing that are are therapist and counselors social workers probation workers social workers can even sign them you're doing a disservice to yourselves and to the community dogs are not monsters they mean a lot to us that they're part of our family and they help us they help us more than people do we like dogs more than people how about that
ESA dogs should go through the rigorous and long training service dogs do. These BS “esa” with zero training should be stopped and fined.

After my landlord allowed me to have a pet he wast specific on what pet I couldn't have; he said I have to get rid of it because his renters insurance won't allow it. I found out that the insurance company that tells you that they will not insure you because of the type of dog your tenant may have,is illegal but state farm among others will insure pitbulls and the sort. I rescued a very playful 1year old Pitbull from the shelter . My son haves depression and anxiety and other emotional issues. He's been wanting a dog for a long time . I asked the landlord he said yes. The dog makes him happy and my son actually comes out his room and walks him. I haven't seen my son laugh and play like this in years. It's given us purpose in our lives. When the landlord told me that I have to get rid of him I cried so much . The landlord says that the they will not give him renters insurance if they know I the renter own and have a pitbull in his property. I'm so depressed my son is as well. How can I convince the landlord to let us keep the pitbull without getting him mad and getting an eviction notice. I live in Florida and I have section 8. It it also a tax write off for the landlord
So sorry about this situation.. it would be a god idea to keep your kid busy on sports or give time to dog shelter around your area you on sección 8 you should not lose that huge benefit..
Couldn’t you find any other breed that wasn’t potentially dangerous to your community. Way too many pitbull owners abuse the esa laws
None of you admit that you just don't want to lose out on the money you force tenants to pay for their pets... Talking typically 50/75 extra a month in rent + ridiculous deposit for the pet.
A rental property is a financial investment not a charity. When it's an obvious fact that pets tend to be more destructive to homes with their claws to doors, cabinets, carpet, flooring and potty accidents, it takes this thing called money to fix these things and the landlord should not be liable for the damages. Not all landlords are rich, a lot are middle class hardworking people that are just trying to secure their future so they take a loan out on a property. There are irresponsible tenants and landlords, it's not just one sided.
That’s what a security deposit is for. To repair damages. Most landlords have a clause for tenants to clean the carpets professionally etc. so it seems to list folks that having to pay pet rent is for the $ more than anything else. I’ve got a dog that is professionally trained and doesn’t have “accidents” or destructive behavior. Yet I’m supposed to pay far above everyone else for me protection and alarm system.
I’m a single mother and having a dog gives me peace of mind from intruders. Your landlord won’t properly protect you from intruders.
Some landlords just bump up the rent instead of asking pet deposit. One way or the other they will be covered.

Therapy animals do NOT work for one person, they only work with many people in institutional settings. Your dog was an emotional support animal, not a therapy animal.

I am a landlord of a beach house in Florida on a vacation weekly rental program. I only rent my place few weeks a year only about 4 to 6 weeks, in the highest season. The rest of the year I live with my family in the house. I am highly allergic to animals, I have a medical allergy test to prove it. I also had three sinus surgeries over the years as a result of allergies. I do not allow smoking or pets in my house. VRBO policy is telling me I have to accept ESA and service animals without any questions. Why is somebody's emotional discomfort without the pet more important than my medical allergy diagnosis? Why can't these whiny people come to the beach without the animal for one week? Most of the beaches do not allow pets on the beach aside from designated areas, and people violate the rule anyway.
Why don’t you just hire better cleaners to clean your house when they leave with their animals….. everyone wins if you stop complaining and just have the house cleaned better. When will you whiny landlords just fork over a little extra cash and get things taken care of? God knows we pay you all too much as it is.
@@shasmi93 Well, regular cleaning is $550 for my 6 bedroom beach house. I just paid $1600 for deep cleaning which is done once or twice a year. My cleaners are very good so I do not need "better cleaners". Better cleaners cost more money and you would have to pay even more rent and I definitely do not want you to pay more. So you come for vacation with your animal and you are spending most of the time on the beach (no pets allowed) and the rest of the time in restaurants, coffee houses or bars (no pets allowed). So what is your animal doing in my house while you are gone most of the time? Do you lock him up in a cage? Do you bring and pay a pet sitter to take care of your animal in my house? Why can't you leave your animal with friends or relatives at home for for one week and have a beautiful reunion when you come back. I think your animal needs a break from you too.
@@jurajf1 I agree with you. Animals and vacations are a rediculous mix. I’m mostly lashing out at you landlords denying pets at your rental homes. Like mine just did… for no reason. And is taking me to court over it… most landlords suck and are sub-human. You are correct about Americans and taking their pets everywhere… it’s ludicrous and obnoxious. But shouldn’t we be able to rent and have a pet if they are well behaved?! Apparently not…
How about they just don't bother to rent from you! I haven't been anywhere since 2003 because I won't leave them for longer than 6 hours, except when I had a brain hemorrhage stroke and was Air lifted to a trama center and a social worker from the health department in my area took care of them while I was in the ICU
This isn’t about you. This isnt your choice. If someone is disabled and they need an ESA, no one’s opinion matters.If they’re a protected class then the fair housing law will enforce their right. Federal law will override your thoughts on whether you think someone does or does not have a need. An illegal denial involving fair housing is a BIG deal. You don’t have to agree or like the fair housing laws, but you abide by them or cya in court. Yes, there are people who abuse this policy but your personal or uninformed professional opinions are inappropriate and completely saturated this episode.

Listen, I am very disappointed with your commentary on emotional support, Dogs, I have had trauma anxiety my entire life. My mom is was bipolar. She passed away. There’s way too much judgment here. A lot of people might miss it but they miss everything else as well. Maybe you should start talking about positivity and having an emotional support animal instead of the negative aspects.
