Making the repair equipment unrepairable. It's like repair inception.

The cult that hates it's god a bit.
I work for an AASP, Geek Squad, and boy let me tell you that the heat press is prone to software failure causing the unit to brick and become unusable. Apple takes its sweet time to send out new ones.
Like what mine is doing or something else?
@@toadster40 wait a minute a heating press can overheat and brick itself? isnt that the one thing it should be protected against?
@@toadster40 that would be like a 3D printer that just totally burns the filament even if you set the heat to minimum
same here, our Precinct stays beefing with our heat press lol
I’ve never had mine fail like that contact CSS or make an escalation they will replace the unit. But don’t get me started on the AirPod testing suite fml
Former IRP tech here. We actually didn't have access to buy these till early 2022. We still didn't use them because the franchisee I worked for was loath to spend money on tools beyond what I absolutely needed as a gear snob. What's simultaneously funny and sad is that this video featured more info about this than Apple does in their IRP training.
Not really. U can find documentation about literally everything in GSX2 and in ATLAS
I'm always amazed and horrified how much thought apples puts into their devices to make them as repair-unfriendly as possible. These hot-pockets are just the cherry on top.
That’s the smartphone industry for you look at Samsung too🤦♂️
Most manufacturers do this glue and clip thing as it speeds up assembly time and reduces cost
@@djashjones Not All
@@vanhuvanhuvese2738 ok, changed it to most.
I do wish that people would stop buying phones from Apple, Samsung, etc who have these anti-consumer, anti-environment approaches, instead buy from companies such as Fairphone. iFixit has a repairability page which ranks the most popular phones. Easily replaceable batteries are also essential.
Hearing about people who have been told by Apple they can't repair a phone makes more sense now, they can't repair it because the machine is broken. Must be the same manufacturer as McDonald's ice cream machines.
I wonder if it fails as often as McDonalds Ice Cream soft serve machines?
Is it not crazy to think that actual engineers were paid to make an iPhone objectively worse?
Engineers were paid to make many things worse for the sake of planne obsolesence, you need to than capitalism for it in the end and not the engineer.
I think that's just a fact at this point.
@@GareWorks yes
I can imagine one of the next iPhones being a sealed-shut glass capsule, phone shaped, the only way to access into being to shatter the screen with 500 bucks worth of repairs to get a new enclosure and seal it back. And, like, touch everywhere, and no physical ports outside
@@ShitHappensRLYthey made it more repairable last year tho…
You could replace the mainboard/arm processor with an arduino. Figure out the desired temps and use the touch screen to control it. It would probably be more reliable than what's there.
The touchscreen looks like a nextion display to me
@@mishaproduction For me too. It uses UART as there a only 4 wires. VCC GND TXD RXD
@@MyszkoServe the uart protocol that nextion uses is really simple. It's just directly setting commands to the device. Example: vis thelabel,1 (to make thelabel visible)
For the security bit, just use a flathead screw driver lol. Also works for security Torx, just need a small flathead.
i did this, removed a security bit screw with a flathead....well made it non security bit anyhow
You need the official “apple official repair kit” kit, it comes in a container at 3 tons 😀
would probably start at a base price of 3 grand plus 1.5k each for attachments and 500 just for the power plug 🤣
and requires three semi-trailers, a police escort, a backup driver crew, a hydroline lift crew as it passes under. You also need to notify the FAA and notify the CIA of transport of encrypted material across state borders!
I love to see you actually repair this and explain what went wrong with it.
It failed at the design stage...
@@edwardfletcher7790 true enough
the firmware is outdated, he needs to update the firmware so the tool knows which iPhone it is.
Or if not then send it to one of the many UA-cam electronics repairers. I would have initially suggested the excellent 'Mend It Mark' but as he's in the UK that may not be practical. Another great repairer is 'Defpom's Electronics Repair' and he is based in New Zealand so that's much closer to Hugh.
@@speckbomber7219 The fact an Apple hotplate uses firmware & RFID rather than a 0-5 min timer tells you all you need to know about Apple....SIGH
Love these teardowns even when it turns out fixing these things is more tricky than anticipated. Thanks Hugh!
An AASP Service Engineer here. I think your heat pockets are not good. It doesn’t detect a phone has been inserted. I use it every day and the only time I see trouble with it is when I turn it on and directly insert a phone into it without waiting it to be green. I absolutely love it as it makes my repairs easy and opening display like butter. I have never ever fucked up a display while opening. I have colleagues crack display and then they gotta pay for the display repair. With this machine I never had to deal with it. ❤
Wait, you have to pay for a display? Wouldn't touch it then without the machine.
Could it be that those hot pockets are from another kit and they are software locked to a certain heating device?
Thank you for your work. Apple’s true “genius” is on display behind the scenes, under the hood, behind closed doors. Love seeing this stuff.
The deeper you dig the worse it seems to gets when it comes to tech conglomerates! Thank God we have people like Hugh Jeffreys who take the time to clearly expose their unfair and intentional anti-repair designs and schemes.
Your commentary shows you barely seem to have even the most primitive, cursory understanding of Apple.
Bloody hell! What a chunky machine!! I guess using this device means you're less likely to damage the screen/glass (or body) when removing it, and I assume it would be 'somewhat' quicker?? But paying USD100~ each, every year for the each new iPhone adapter tray, becomes a pretty costly/ongoing exercise!! Great little insight Hugh, thanks Mate.
What's the bet the individual phone repair manuals are only available as a subscription service ?
$100 a year for an upgrade to this thing is nothing for a business using this thing all the time
@@Fireclaws10 Your didn't listen, it's $100 per model !
That's 300 USD a year, 400 if they release an SE.
@@edwardfletcher7790 ok? that's pretty tiny for a business expense
Just a thought that may have been missed. Try twisting the red emergency stop button on the front of the machine. It looks like it is pushed in. Once it is released it may work. It isn’t 100% assured, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Awesome stuff as always Hugh.
Its connected to the power supply "on-off" switch. The unit wont even light up without it in the right position.
@@HughJeffreys Did you check the Switch thats being pressed by the sled ?
@@HughJeffreys no worries at all Hugh, it was just a thought.

@@HETyoutubekanaal thanks for pointing this out, somehow I missed it.
Looks like something from the Soviet-era-and about as useful.
Great Sunday viewing, thanks Hugh.
Soviet-era equipment is lasting longer than the soviet union did. This piece of junk lasts shorter than a US presidency
What on earth are you talking about? Talking for the sake of doing so doesn’t guarantee wisdom will come out.
I understand that for individual repair shop this machine is not ideal for budget. But for customers that pay Apple to fix their phone, this is actually really nice. Why? it basically eliminate any human error that could lead to damaging your phone. There was once I found my aluminum frame scratched after it got repaired from official Apple store. I spent an hour there arguing with the staff and despite I showed the photo I took before repair, they refuse to admit it was their fault. Eventually, I recalled that when they took my phone, the diagnose was recorded as no outer damage to observe, the manager came out to apologize and agreed to exchange my phone.
Before the Hexalobe screws on the repair tool was found
Apple: **sweating like a waterfall**
iFixIt: "Yes!!! Here we go guys!! We ought to know how repairable this is!!!"
After the Hexalobe screws on the repair tool is found
Apple: **heavy sigh of relief**
iFixIt: "Alright! Time to make another screwdriver bit guys!!"
Apple: "Oh crud." **sweats again like a waterfall**
indeed with a big screen like that you would think that they would display far more useful information. it could be a nice raspberry pie application to replace the non functioning boards inside & have a universal system. also the hot pockets could have adjustable sides to allow any phone to be used in the cradle. the system makes more sense if you are doing 100s of screen a day at a repair centre.
I was working at a company using a similar display for our equipment and there was no good reason we couldn't display useful error messages. The reason (not a good one) was we were using an off the shelf piece of hardware and didn't have people to write code to display a useful message. Apple, on the other hand, could have just stuck a phone on the side with the manual built in.
That screw seems like an Torx Plus that many automotive manufacturers use, didn’t know of them until had to disassembly one maybe you can look out those and see if fits
It also seemed to me that the torx bit he used was significantly too small even had it been standard.
Did you perform a continuity test on the pocket's heating elements?
Heating elements are not a direct 0Ω short, they're just some oversized resistors, somewhere around 80Ω
Watching this and listening to Hugh somehow makes me hungry.
If you need so many tools to repair a product, it's not repair friendly at all...
You shouldn't need more than a screwdriver to repair a phone, what Apple is doing here is insane greenwashing to avoid complications with regulators.
Brilliant video!
I used my 3d printer heated bed for 2 phones with around 60c. Worked great.
Have you tested the emergency stop button? On video It looks like It is deppressed. That may be the reason for no error code
If you look at it from a corporation/business perspective, apples over engineering and idiotic repair tools (looking at you battery placer tool) make sense though, it takes the human element out of the repair and basically guarantees the same level of service at every store.
Now anyone can be a genius (genius bar technician that is.)
Those Genius "experts" would destroy your phone without these tools. 💀
@@_modiX only because apple doesn't care enough to train them when they can just make tools to make the process not dependant on the technician.
Duh!
Why do you think MacDonalds designed and manufactured THEIR OWN bespoke equipment for the production of their food, and the most efficient use of space in their kitchens?
A brand thrives or dies on known quantities; repeatability and uniformity.
You must be new to processes and understanding mass production and repair.
(see “time and motion study”)
At first I thought you were getting a great ebay deal, but then I realized there wasn't any delicious hot pockets in the box
Apple is the height of our consumerism addition. We are so addicted and Apple are milking it.
The bit where you told us in detail about all the steps you took to remove the slightly stiff screw by using a bigger screwdriver, was edge of the seat stuff!
Apple's Repair Program is like you letting your sibling play the game but with a unplug remote
Heck you could create your own power unit for the hotpocket and an Arduin or even an ESP32 or if you want to get fancy a raspberry Pi replacing the original control board so easily and bypass all the crap and use a 555 time to set the time based on a keyboard input. I think hacking the unit into a useful reliable instrument would be worth the effort and make a cool video!
A few years ago, I was an apple guy.. huge fan of iphone and mac. While I still really like the apple software experience and hardware build quality, this channel has convinced me not to buy any more apple products in the future. I'm not ok with supporting a company that literally puts who-knows-how-much money into designing things such that they cannot be repaired
I can build and arduino system for that machine if you want, but I would need to have it phisically in my house and that’s in Mexico, shipping cost is the same as the machine
In a working state
Tearing down the tearing tool, we are going trough the rabbit hole... 😁
Apple: making consumer lives difficult since 2010
Looks like using military grade components (DIN connectors) and beefy steel doesn't matter in durability if you use high volatility CMOS in your microcontroller 🤣
Would it be possible to wire up the heating element of your "Crazy" machine to that of the iPhone holder, and use Apple's repair kit just for holding it down and using the suction? I know it will be way too overengineered to do essentially the same thing, but I'd like to see it.
I'd jsut put in a raspberry Pi or an Arduino and replace the boards completely. A few lkines of code and your good to go. It would be interesting to dump the ROM's and see what hte code actually does!
I like the new intro, no longer really long
If you have a 3D printer, you can just use your printer's bed to heat up the phone screen. I just got one, an Anycubic Kobra for $229, and replaced my iPhone's screen pretty inexpensively.
Nice video man your where I get all my information
Hi Hugh,
I noticed your problem with the Display Opener. I think I know what your problem was and the errorcodes in the clip you showed, too. I worked as an AASP till a year ago.
When you click in the hotpockets, you have to turn the red switch/button in the front it will spring out. Then begins the heating process, when temp is reached a 2 min timer will apear, after that an alarm starts and you have to push the button back in place.
Another countdown will apear, at this point it is ready to open the phone.
I am not sure about the manual, maybe I could help with that, but I am not sure, if i am allowed to share this confidential stuff.^^
PS: I am pretty sure the errorcode E4 means that the suction cup is not all the way up.
I hope my memory is right ;)
Keep up the good content.
Freekin love videos like this!!
Can you make an omlet on your third party removal tool?? 😂😂
It's like trying to repairing your dead battery with a F1 crew with the basic tools and smiles 🤭🤭
I hope you get a working one and make a review on it though
This video sent me down a 30 min research about the wildest security screws.
The repair tool that needs repair LOL! It obviously runs an os of sorts - look for a JTAG header or similar and see if you can get any clues when connected via serial. Or simply gut it, replace the cpu with a raspberry pi, enable the touchscreen and you'll have a one of a kind.
Seeing how complicated the machine is just to perform a simple task. Apple really knows how their devices are difficult to repair. Not to mention, this machine that seems getting errors is also hard to troubleshoot and/or repair
I think it's safe to say that it's over-engineered with a view to making Apple even more money by selling iPhone hot pockets and some kind of service contract. Apple is such a horrendous company, I wish people would stop buying their anti-consumer, environmentally unfriendly tat.
Now that I saw the video I think I'm going to get one of those hot plates. Apart from repairing my own phone, I do guitar repairs and it helps to pre-heat some parts before gluing, gives me more time to glue the part for one.
I work at Apple and it’s nice to see how our Oven looks from the inside hhhhh
Hi Hugh , looks like you need special repair tool , for the repair tool ! 😜
Looks like this thing was designed by Taylor. The guys responsible for the McDonald's ice cream machines. 😂
I'm not surprised you struggled to loosen those screws with a screwdriver designed to open small electronics 😂
Clearly. 😏
Usually when it’s listed untested and it’s something easy to test it’s because they know it doesn’t work and just don’t want to say that
The difference between your tools and this screen removal tool from Apple is that it heats the frame of the phone not the display which in turn loosens the pressure sensitive adhesive much more effectively , it also minimizes heat damage to the OLED panel in the display.
Reading all these comments makes it really apparent that people don’t know what they’re talking about. I’ve been doing phone repair for 8 years. iPhones are some of the easiest devices to physically repair, aside from the software barriers apple has in place; if you’ve ever repaired a Samsung device or other android, you will know this to be true. Only phone that is easier than an iPhone to repair is a Pixel. Apple isn’t making phones harder to repair purposefully with their physical designs, they don’t have to. The physical hardware is such to keep dust and water out, and even then we still see people coming in for water damage. Using heat and isopropyl alcohol, the adhesive that keeps the screens shut is all but nonexistent. Apple doesn’t have to try to make their phones hard to get into from a repairability standpoint because they already have SO many software points that they use to gatekeep repairs. On almost all iPhones that are still getting iOS updates, the screens, batteries, vibration motors, earpiece speakers, and cameras are all irreplaceable without getting some form of “warning” message along with losing features.
Just my 2¢
Thanks Hugh.
Looks like hexalobe is symmetrical, so with a correctly sized plain bit it should work
That thing is the Juicero cold press of the screen heater/removers .
It would be funny if the problem would be just a pushed in safery stop button :-D
Apple just needs to chill out, I love their products, but the repairability of their devices sucks, but you, you make it looks so easy, keep up the amazing work
You don't know how happy i become when i see that you've uploaded! honestly tho it always makes my day!
Your are one of the very few youtubers who's channel has a special place in my heart
It’s honestly annoying how they do this to consumers we should be allowed to do what we want to our devices
I almost don't feel annoyed anymore because we're just that... consumers.
@@Kizarat we aren’t even classified as humans we are basically money banks
@@ryanturner9935 Pretty much lol.
No fronts, but when i buy something damaged from a company that offer repairs i would guess it is unrepairable ;) Thx for your vids mate
I have been supplying these machines a lot to lot of repairs and its been booming quit good
That thing reminds me of Juciero in terms of wildly over complicated devices.
Hey Hugh would you consider a resell?
7:26 I think that's TORX Plus screw
Get a set of 'T" handle hex drivers, preferably with the ball tips so you can angle the driver somewhat. Inexpensive and well worth it.
You should send this to Rossmann asap!
I think this is easily hackable. Just completely bypass the "smart" part of this machine and directly hook up the power supply to the heater contacts. Sure you lose the timer function but at least it works and isn't a total paperweight.
I always love your content
Can you just apply voltage to the heating pockets to use the suction cup?
I was thinking that too, although I guess the main unit is governing the heat level? Even so, it should be possible.
The firmware's binary might be possible to dump from the chip, although I'm unsure how much - if any - help that might be; it's entirely possible that there's a way to simply write your own better firmware and flash it onto the controller, as it does seem like it'd be fairly easy to reflash.
You should have got the Hotpocket Pro
If you can't get the electronics working at all you could always replace the control electronics with an arduino and RFID reader.
There's no reason to get a tool like this in the first place, it's way too unnecessarily advanced for what it should be
To be honest, I'm someone who supports right to repair and wish for more repair friendly devices from manufacturers but can't cease to notice the utter hatred for Apple from most of your followers in the comments. What does that add to your life if it's all about hating a particular company. Is it because of how increasingly successful Apple is? It's just unnecessary! We can all criticize and push for better repairability from them but the hatred won't bring any fruition.
I can see the "anti-Apple" behavior from some of you even as someone who doesn't posses any of their products or have any preference for Apple.
1st thing i would have tested was the microswitch at the back of the machine when you insert the heating pocket
4:29 Its an UART Nextion Display. You can reuse it with an Arduino
I have one and its amazing I havent broken a screen since
Welcome back from ur holidays
Did you verify that all the simpler commodity components (like the microswitch shown on-screen around 3:01 with that arrow) are actually working? It's amazing how many microwave ovens are discarded because a simple microswitch like that has failed.
Find the hot pocket voltage and bypass the lot with a power supply and switch.
I remember Hot Pockets - they were delicious!
So not only do we have to buy new phones when our old one fails (from damage or planned obsolescence), *but Apple’s “authorised” repair technicians have to buy new repair tools when their old ones fail?!*
This makes me sick to the stomach, *HOW MUCH MONEY DOES TIM COOK WANT?!?*
It's unreal that this machine exists to perform such a simple function. And the fact that it's broken and the means to fix it are kept secret is ridiculous.
And there are people that still complain when governments try to regulate this kind of industries, they see it like a threat to liberty and a step to communism. It’s unbelievable how these companies are really taking the effort to make repairs basically an impossible task.
Is that it? Something to heat something up? Reminds me of Pop Tarts. Yum!
Looks just as edible as the frozen version of hot pockets.
So, if Apple’s iPhones are not actually self repairable, which brand should we be looking at that offer this option going forward?
Fascinating to see!
Your third party heat plate is "Crazy" 😅
Brilliant video as always
The mystery screw is 6 lobe (non security) Torx Plus

Here's the difference between your removal process and Apple's. Yours actually works.
The next Apple repair program will be the repair program for Apple repair equipment
Conclusion : 2 years is the expecting life for Apple products and Apple repairing products ... Great video anyway :)
