- This is the first part in an ongoing guide series that I will be developing over time. Hopefully I will be able to one day have a full library of D2 videos that can help players from complete noob to D2 professional.
In this video I cover Diablo 2 skills, the skill tree, hotkeys, prerequisites, masteries, hidden bonuses, and a couple of unique quirks not displayed in the game.

Hey everyone! I'd love to hear feedback about this video. Really the first one I have edited so I'm still new to it all.
My biggest questions are what do you think about the format/style? Too formal? Needs more of something? Volume levels too crazy? Any feedback is appreciated!
MrLlamaSC I don’t think it’s too formal at all. This is a great addition stylistically to your existing formats. Keep it up Llama, and always remember... HYDRA PALLY HYPE!!!

content is great, the only thing I'd like is if you'd speak a bit more loudly and clearly
I think it's too formal. There is an efficiency from the formality but the friendly, human quality of an informal one is lost. Your "tips and tricks" video was very informal so it felt bloated. Finding a middle ground would be best.
the pixel thing you did at the end was unnecessary imo and also you could speak a little louder.
Had no idea about tome from inventory not using animation frames. Great video.

Watching this in 2021 for Diablo 2 Resurrected. Finally a video that explains actual skill usage! I thought mouse clicks were always the same skills and f keys for other skills. Didn't know pressing the f keys actually binds them to the mouse click! Now I can f shit up, thanks!
I am now in Llamas with you for this guide. I have been playing D2 since 2001 and this guide still taught me something new. Thanks for bringing fresh and superb content!
The music for your intro and outro is pretty loud compared to the actual content. I'd try to make it more consistent. I had to turn the volume down when the intro played, back up when you started talking, and quickly back down for the outro.

I was just seeing your records on youtube, and i started playing it, and was just amazed of how much i didnt know about the game, so i was seeing all your videos searching for all of your commentarys about the game, but it was hard to understand without knowing the basics, so i started to read about it, but know with this video (and hopefully a series) i'm gonna learn so much :D

Right on! I'm pretty stoked that you're doing these so I'll have somewhere to point people to, who ask me about the game. Bonus that it's one of my favorite streamers(there's your ego stroke for the day, everybody gets one!).
I think my only critique that hasn't already been covered is slow down when talking just in the slightest. I'm sure that time is a factor when putting these videos together(too short, no absorption of info and too long people get bored, I get it), but some spots it sounded as though words ran together or you tripped over yourself entirely. I'm sure you'll find a good cadence in subsequent videos, though, so it's not a huge deal.

Dang, thanks for the tip about Druid summons. I have a sick pelt that has +1 to Grizzly, which I've been using to delay putting "wasted" points into the prerequisites for it until Oak Sage is maxed. I think my plan is still solid, because the grizzly is pretty tanky as is, but a good thing to know regardless.
I would probably add an annotation about getting resets for your skill points from akara, based solely on this video it seems like if you misclick a skill, your character might be forever gimped. Maybe add that point in a stat guide? Explain what each stat is used for, what attack rating means especially on the other difficulties, a block cap, no def when running, things like that. Why its not good to put points in certain skills, when is it good to stop putting points in those skills, etc
Good point about skill reset from Akara. Just completely missed it...also I think YT disabled text annotations so I may just be out of luck there :(
But I can add that point in the stat guide when I make it!
Well this is just excellent. Maybe consider going back to this style of guidance for your current series of build-guides :-)

Since there are alot of diffrent textboxes in this game. Newer players might have a hard time figuring out exactly what you are talking about. For example when talking about synergies you might want to highlight the text or maybe zoom in on it so its easier to understand. Great video!
Agreed. In the future I'm going to rely more on graphics and less on being in the game physically moving around the mouse

I'm starting to see a pattern here, since most of the people i know/ask, myself included, started this game with "necro summoner everything into summon skeleton". Although i had some points in the golem, too :D

Would love to see more of these, you are by far the most well spoken D2 guy. I suppose it's a matter of personal taste, but why did you change skill hotkey binds to letters rather than F1-12?
I play starcraft and am used to all those hotkeys. F keys are further away

Yeah I always wondered if the hotkey itself triggers the skill or you need to press the hotkey AND then left or right-click afterwards. Modern computers having function keys that will open other stuff (like F1 opens the Help windows) aren't helping.
"Dungeon siege 2" is a great game about its skillz too try it
I agree, the fact you need to plan and choose your skills is why d2 is still awesome today. And it’s why d3 was a snooze fest to me. D3 felt like my hand was being held the entire time.

I just subscribed. I'd love to see a fireball sorc speedrun. Tempted to do it myself, but I really don't have the time to even figure out installation ATM. How fast could you farm leaf and blow through? And I mean very minimalist fireball, then respec lightning or ice in NM.
New favorite channel. Miss the shit out of this game.
We tried some FB sorc speedrunning years ago but light just seemed to be better

As for the tanking solo hell bear, yeah, my bear got 1shot in hell cold plains by a bossgroup, even tho' bear, dire wolf, and wolf are maxed out.

Im pretty new to diablo 2, what I'm wondering is how did people back in the day know about the right arrangement on runes to make runewords or recipes for the cube and precise stuff like that. Because I have not seen anything in the game mentioning this it's more like a couple of vague hints. I always have to look things up online, how did people figure this out back then? Were the recipes in the game manual or something like that ?
People just unloaded the files and looked at the combinations :D

I like setting up scroll wheel up/down to "select next skill" and "select previous skill" respectively. Works as just an extra way to select skills if you're like me and always keep you hand hovered over your potions. I'm just a wuss though :-P
I personally hate it, but I suppose in the future it's important to at least note that it's an option :)
Oh no doubt It's has to be a pretty poor way to go for speedrunning. But if you're lazy like me and only use like 4 skills, it works... Until you have to squeeze another skill in there :-P

Good stuff. Intro is slightly too loud. Ending music is also too loud and much too long. I'd rather not see any ending, as it doesn't add anything. Just end on your "ship outta loop?".
Lighting resist can increase the maximum resist, can this bonus get from your gears which has plus to all skills, I remember it cant.
So wait, when you say the druid summons receive bonuses from each other, do you mean that each point in one gives an effective point in the others? Or is it a different type of bonus depending on what type of point?
So for instance, say I have 10 points in grizzly, 10 points in dire wolf, and 1 point in spirit wolf. Does that mean that when I summon a grizzly it acts like a level 21 summon grizzly?
I mean they are synergies for each other, but they also count soft skills from items. So it doesn't add to your grizzly like it is boosting his levels but rather it increases his dmg, hp, etc when you put skills in the others. However if you get an item that adds +1 to summon skills or something of that nature, every point added in every skill will help the others.
hes talking about synergy. The grizzly you summon will be level 10, but it will get bonuses from the levels in the other summons. Its listed in the skill tree, but it will be something like +damage or +life for every point in the other skills.

personally i prefer the casual way of speaking, just like when you are streaming and answering some questions from the chat.
but, it has to be pointed out that i do not hate the formal way of speaking like in this video, nor it is inferior or with fault. Both have their pros and cons and this is just a personal preference.
The intro and outro music can be a little bit lower though. People with headphone probably would have their ears blasted if they jack up the volume to listen to your content and suddenly comes the outro.

15years of d2, I didn't know about the druid summon synergies. I still don't understand why they receive synergy bonus from softpoints.
They're treated as passives or masteries in their relation. Bit strange for sure but kinda a fun thing :)
Does the necromancers summon resist actually improve the skeletons in some other way (hp dmg?) then give resistance since it's listed as a synergy. Or it just gives + resistance and that's all folks

Kinda brushing on this topic in the vid... What's a good spot for cold mastery? For example I love going fireball/frozen orb and after getting the important skills put in fire and lightning i've gone with a sort of 2 to frostbolt 1 to cold mastery with any extra skillpoints to support frozen orb. Is there a golden rule here somewhere?
As constructive critique I want to add the intro audio sounds very low quality
I like to get cold mastery to be roughly 130-150 negative res, but if you're running something like infinity then getting it to -60-70 is enough. Most monsters aren't going to have more than 50% cold resistance so with -130 to -150 you're basically bringing them down to nothing!
in pvp you may want a little higher to counteract all the people with 175%+

At the end of the video the druid character moves despite the 2 buttons are assigned to skills. I thought normal attack needed to be appointed to one of them in order to move. How is it possible ?

You mean,when I was giving Paladin's resistance skill point and not active i have all of resistance? Without active ?
You only get + to your MAX resist, but it doesn't give you extra resistance itself from the passive ability.
So if you have 20 points in Resist Fire your Max fire resistance goes up to 85 instead of 75 when in a passive state

What is a way to reset skills even in v 1.2 where Akara doesn’t let you reset your skills
can't reset them in those early patches without hero editor or something
So how do you use a passive skill and regular skills driving me nuts
If you mean something like auras on a Paladin, you need to have an aura selected in your right-click, and use your regular skills (like Smite/etc) on your left-click.
If you mean passives like the Amazon's passive tree, you don't need to actually cast them, they are always active.
If you mean castable passives (aka "Buffs") like the Assassin's Burst of Speed, you need to cast the spell and it will last for a certain duration, during which you can swap to another regular skill for left or right click. You will need to recast Burst of Speed when the "buff" wears off.

there are a lot of different ones so it depends which character and skill you're curious about honestly. I don't know of a source that has all of them

Find that waaaaaay outdated burrito pkazon guide from waaaaaaay back in the day (1999-2002?) That was for pure entertainment. Back when buriza was that penultimate beast for zons. But you're too young for that. Good job otherwise. I have spent hundreds of hours helping out newbs, explaining everything from gear, to skill placement, to inventory management.
I will always love this game. Radament has a skin suit if you pay attention. And that only begins to cover it.

You should be able to play, just need to fiddle with the settings
