Y'all forgot the most important part. When Hector's dad comes to humbly ask Achilles for his son's corpse, and Achilles finally calms down, and lets him leave with it. That's the real cathartic resolution, not the funeral.
It's not a finished story without Priam coming to his tent. The Illiad is about Achilles' rage, yes, but also his forgiving his enemy.
Extra History: The Illiad!
OSP: *"Troy Story"*
Extra History: The Odyssey!
OSP: *"Troy Story 2: Electric Boogaloo"*
Nicholas 😂🤣
That made my day!
wars over silly things rememeber franz ferdinands last trip to sarajevo
Don't forget Troy Story 3 AKA The Aeneid
Wait, where is the part of Hector's father going to beg for Hector's body back? I'd say thats the most essential part of the anti war message, what with both a grieving father and a former enemy both coming to a consensus and mourining in their own way, the loss of a mans life.
I was also wondering if they were going to mention that part.
In this Hector also looks like a massive jerk, but in reality he is one of the coolest heroes of the Illiad: he pretty much fought his last battle knowing he was going to die, but he went anyways because it was his duty and departed from his family in a really touching way.
I was also going to ask this. To me King Priam's heart to heart was the main crux of the story. Achilles doesn't soften until he grieves with his enemy over the war
Agreed one of the most influential and powerful moments in the entire epic cycle.
I don't know the exact order of the events, but isn't it possible for that to happen after Petrocles' funeral? I mean, it could come in the next chapter if that's the case.
Next Up The Odyssey - AKA Troy Story 2.
Athena: “You got a friend in me”.
Cleaver.

Yeah you watch osp to but great idea
Poseidon will be playing the roll of Sid.
“With the war over” whaaaa? Way more to go in the story. Why no visit of Priam for Hector’s body?
Yeah, I hope they cover that! 🤞
It's kind of the most important part of the story. It would be strange to not cover it.
The war is basically over, there are no more battles. I doubt it's the last episode though.
Though... The Trojan horse and Achilles' death isn't actually in the illiad.
Yeah, just checked, the only thing missing is the retrieval of hectors body and his funeral, it might not be enough for another episode (if they stick to the epic and don't transition into the odyssey)
They are now the second UA-cam channel I’ve seen cover the Iliad and skip the end. Arguably the point of the entire story. Where Achilles finally gives up his rage.
30 seconds to the river god attack, zero seconds for Priam.
Priorities: unclear.

Matt: Beloved Lifelong Companion. My Brain: Sure buddy, sure.
"flatmates"
@Andrew Gray I don’t think there’s a very hetero way to explain wanting to have your ashes mixed with a “friend”
What is wrong with you people
That's prob the most accurate way to put it if Matt is retelling Homer's Iliad, since the latter kind of left exact nature of Achilles' and Patroclus' relationship up for interpretation. Plato's version however makes it pretty clear... Lol 😆
@@abee8569 The two of them has sex, and people were pointing that out.
Achilles upon being told he is fated to die if he takes revenge against the Trojans: I Couldn't save my Hetero-life partner mom, This life isn't worth living!
Go Red
Hetero?? what do you mean by that?
@@suk4511 it's a joke about how Patroclus and Achilles were probably more than friends, the reason they say "hetero life partner" is bc they're playing into the fact that historians ignore that and just assume it's a close friendship instead
Wow, I’m first
One thing that was inaccurate is that Petroklas didn’t fight on Achilles’ order he fought in Achilles’ armour without Achilles’ permission
Hector didn’t fight Achilles head on, hector first ran around Troy three times to flee from Achilles but nobody dared to open the gates, the trojans were too afraid
Hector then saw his friend(? I don’t know anymore) with growing spears, he decided to face Achilles with his friend, he threw his spear he head already but when he turned to take a spear from his friend he was gone. At that point he knew he was toast. He attacked Achilles with fury, but Achilles with help from Hera threw a spear right at the one point in hectors neck where there wasn’t armour
There are many versions of this tale there isn’t just one
Also, if I remember correctly, weren't Achilles and Petrokoles supposed to look fairly similar, and due to the fact that Achilles armor covered most of his body, people confused them, not like in the art style of the video?
that means that they're not wrong, you just heard a different version
@@ironrocker100 I'm not saying that they are wrong, it's just a bit weird how their petrokoles could pass as Achilles, as
A. His face was completley visible
B. They looked nothing alike.
Otherwise I really liked the video
There is not a single true version of Greek myths, as they tended to vary in different regions and also changed with time passing.
Daniel Braidek I know right lol. OP is basically saying “yeah you got the story wrong for this part. It actually went like this but there’s many versions of this story.”
"A rage so great, that even now, a thousand years later..."
Um... closer to three or four thousand.
Yeah, my first thought too
This better have a part three. The war was not over. Achilles' rage is not satiated by all his acts of revenge. The true beauty of the Illiad lies in the fact that Achilles is not able to find solace until he relents and returns Hector's body to king Priam. The core message of the Illiad is that a cycle of violence and hate cannot be ended through further violence and humiliation of the other side, but instead by reconciliation and mutual recognition of each other's humanity. Ignoring that is doing a diservice to this beautiful saga.
Hector: *kills Patroclus*
*This enraged Achilles who punished him severely*
Yah but Achiles is later rewarded by getting to die like a bitch instead of an epic end.
*YES!*
I didn’t expect a oversimplified reference here
*chefs kiss*
i understood that reference *points whit finger*
Agamemnon, dude, just no.
"A thousand years later?" Oh, for the ancient Greeks. It's been several thousand for us, right?
So a rough timeline:
Mycenean Greece: ~1600-1100BC
Greek dark age: ~1100-800BC
Archaic Greece: ~800BC-480BC(persian invasion)
Classic Greece: ~500bc-~320BC
Then we have hellenistic and roman greece, followed by medieval greece i.e. byzantium. The actual trojan war was during the bronze age under the Myceneans, likely some time around 1200BC. One fact of note was that the bronze age collapse of the myceneans was such a fall that they lost their writing. The Illiad was not written down until near the end of said dark age in the 800's BC, when what we call the greek alphabet was adopted/adapted from the Phoenicians.
Frankly he gets what he deserves in the end.
TL;DR: the written form of the illiad we know arose some 400 years after the war, while for us the war is over 3000 years old or over 12 Americas ago.
The idea of America becoming a metric of time is hilarious to me. Hey, how many Americas did it takye to build Rome?
And we haven't even gotten to his fate after the war...
I love how advanced your team’s animator’s work is! It is a true work of.... art!

I love extra credits and I love this series but I can’t believe they ended the illiad without Priam getting Hectors body back. That’s the whole climax! That’s when Achilles’ rage finally subsides after his BOYFRIEND is murdered!
Any chance we'll see other "portions" of this epic? The Odyssey, Agamemnon's return to Greece (I dont remember the name... sorry, Ancient Greek theater majors), etc
The founding of Rome.
Theresa Hall that’s the Aeneid
Oresteia, I think it's called. (Corrected)
The oresia
MultiYogibear no, it’s the Aeneid I just checked
Achilles' "companion".
Dude, they were totally lovers.
literally nobody could convince me otherwise
history hates lovers
wait a sec, doesn't the iliad end with achilles forgiving priam (thus ending his rage period) and handing over hector's dead body? just asking for a friend (sorry if i was passive-aggresive it's because i am from greece)
That will happen next week
"Thus, then, did they celebrate the funeral of Hector, tamer of horses." (last line.)
indeed, they botched it
Someome could say that part is just the KEY moment and the whole point of everything. but who am I to discuss the internet fans

Are we not going to see Priam come to beg for his son's body? That scene was important in hammering home the senselessness of Achilles rage.
Achilles:"BRING ME HECTOR!!"
And then later gets killed like a common bleb.
How can they forget about the part where he finally returns Hector's body to King Priam? That was one of the most essential scenes! (I also really loved the great mentioning of the "beloved lifelong companion")
Achilles: Gets promised essentially paradise on earth
Achilles: N 0 I will not come
Patroclus: dies

"What are the children of men, but as leaves that drop at the wind's breath?"
-Homer, The Iliad
Barış Gürel “l am a leaf on the wind... see how I soar”
Pretty cool quote. Basically Apollo refusing Poseidon’s attempt to fight him cause it’s pointless for immortals to fight over humans
You missed the most funny part of the epic battle, when achilleus chases Hector in rounds around the city and the duel doesn´t really start until Hector is tricked into it.
So lemme get this straight.
Achilles essentially got god mode respawning a spear, and having op unbreakable armour? And when asked honourably by his enemy to be buried by his family, Achilles said no and dragged his corpse around town on show?
Achilles is a GTA online player with cheat modes on 😂
If i recall correctly, the opening verse of the Iliad is something like "sing, oh weapons, the rage of Aquilles", as if announcing the theme; while the closing verse is "and so died Hector, the horse tamer". Good days in university studying this haha
Among all extra credit series,I love extra mythology the most
I think it might have been a good idea to include the aftermath when Hector's father approaches Achilles and begs for the return of his son's body. Achilles recognizes the same grief he felt for Patrocalos in Hector's father and agrees to return the body. Additionally, a professor of mine posited that the shield of Achilles was meant to represent the Achaean culture as a whole, depicting each aspect of life and death in the Achaean world-view.
Ageans: now might be a good time to get angry!
Achilles: that's my secret, I'm always angry
Fun fact. When the gods saw the way Achilles treated Hector's corpse with such disrespect, they were all united in their disgust and wanted to strike him down if he didn't cut it out. Thetis alarmed by this quickly went down to warn her son of their displeasure. Rather than risking the wrath of the gods, Achilles took his mother's warning to heart and ended up ransoming Hector's body back to the Trojans.
life long companion yea totally not boyfriend

Just like Sappho and her friend lmao
Same thing.
Achilles and Patroclus's relationship is a matter of interpretation since antiquity. Whether it was a pedestrian (an adult older man and a significantly younger teen) relationship or a good friendship is never explicitly stated. (Thank the gods copy and paste exist).
As I said upthread, “boyfriend” is selling it way short. It’s not as though Achilles is someday going to return his stuff.

This was a good series! Would love to see one on the Mahabharata, though I know it's a lot longer
Yes but they could do a basic version
.
Love the vids but this was a bit off, the importance of the Iliad comes from the very end when Achilles feels pity for Priam and gives him back the body of Hector such that they can bury him. Only when Hector's body is returned does Achilles find peace after the death of Patroclus.
The moral being: grief cannot be solved with rage, but mercy ♥️
i hope there's another part dedicated completely to the ending and Priam's begging.
4 episodes in, the real iliad starts.

I am still off the opinion, that Archilles is a whinny mommy's boy.
Dude was disrespected.
So was Perseus. Ancient Greek mamma’s boys > today’s American momma’s boys.
Like i said on the previous episode 😅.
Whinny Mommy's boy with a weak heel...
And he's *still* a petulant teenager. If blood-soaked roaring rampages of revenge are the peak of "masculinity," no wonder the world's a mess.
What about Athena putting a stone under Hector's feet that made him stumble? What about after the funeral when Hector's father the king cries at the feet of Achilles and then Achilles letting him and the city to mourn??? This is the climax of the story, in the end, Illiad is about *Hector's* death?
The Iliad is about Achilles' rage. His rage against Agamemnon for stealing his war slaves, then his rage against Hector and the Troyans for killing his boyfriend. And finally, about him learning to let go of his rage through an act of kindness and compassion towards an enemy.
I loved the new art stile. it's just perfect
I'm just here to remind how they forgot to include Diomedes last ep.
Sad.
Good for you.
One day I hope to get a faithful adaptation of this story in film 😉

there was a mini series with gods intervening and everything.

And to think all this started with Steve and Alex fighting over a Golden apple
4:37 - Anyone else saw Ares face? He's totally happy with the return of the war.
And here we are at the beginning once again:
Sing to me, O muse, the rage of Pelus' son Achilles.
04:10 - Nice engraving of the myth of Zœus and the Bull, top right of Achilles' new shield.
3:06
I, a militant gay, literally snapped my fingers and said "mood"
"Achilles gathers the ashes to be buried alongside him someday"
So they were like friends or something?
04:22 Achilles may have flexed the most fabulous armour but he was about to lose his plot armour.
That ending monolugue was EXQUISITE!💖
I love the animations!
Was 28th person here until I took an arrow in the heel.

the animation are getting better
I hope you follow up this series with one on ajax and arkantos' adventures after encountering gargarensis on Ioklos on their way home.
I hope extra credits do a series on the Hindu mythology, there's a huge tapestry of stories.
"And so passes Hector, tamer of horses."
This was a great legend. I can't wait to see the ending of the Trojan war
5:55 This is not how it went! Hector was running from Achilles and had to be tricked by Athena to think one of his brothers was going to fight by his side to stop and face Achilles.
Edit: And where is the part when Priam comes begging Achilles to give the body of his son back? Where is the part when Achilles promises Hector he would kill him with his spear, wich he does in the end? Why dosen't Hector tell Achilles how he is going to die before dying? Why did they cut so many stuff?
Damn I wish you would have shown Priam popping to Achilles tent to ransom Hector back and how that's the ending of the Illiad and the meaning it entails.
I've been waiting for this and boy was it worth it
Assassin's creed odyssey leans fairly hard into Greek mythology, but still finding a way to give a real world type explanation... I'd love to see you guys do a deep dive into something like that
You missed out on how upon seeing Achilles advancing on him, Hector gets so scared he runs away and is chased around the city three times before the Gods finally trick him into facing Achilles.
"With the war over"
It dragged on for another my guy.
Achilles X Patroclus is the OTP
Archilles: So magnificently gay he went down in history
you forgot to mention that zeus didn't allowed the other gods to intervene in the battle anymore but let apollo struck patroclus only because patroclus previously killed one of zeus's sons.
Hera, hephaestus, poseidon, athena:Who touch the child?!
Achilles' mom: (pointing at the river god) HES TOUCHING THE CHILD
gods and goddesses: (attack) DONT TOUCH THE CHILD!
You forgot to mention, when Hector saw Achilles he was so scared they ran around troy's walls three times before they fought
4:29 had me laughing the most, thats the face of a man that just shat bricks... you guys went all out on this episode with the details!
This video misses one of the largest points of the book.
I realize it would have been difficult to fit it in, but the video suggests that Achilles is satisfied by what he does. But, importantly, he is not.
Only after giving the body back does he relent in his wrath.
This is the massively important conclusion is to wrath and the lesson to take, but it's just not in the video. It appears almost discredited in the video.
Ironically (and for a gross detail), Hector’s body was connected to Achilles’s chariot by thongs that were stabbed through his _achilles_ tendon
I haven't read the Iliad in a while but that's not how Hector and Achilles fight goes.
Leaving out the very end of the Illiad is a big misstep, I think. King Priam of Troy, after the events you recount, actually goes into the Achaean camp and begs for Hector's body. And this is the moment where the rage of Achilles breaks, and it is with the funeral of Hector and the joined mourning of Praim and Achilles that the story of the Illiad concludes. It is both a war and anti-war story, but the message is incomplete without speaking of how the rage is ended.
Woah I thought Greeks and Romans didn’t like human sacrifice
Kanye Kubrick The humans they sacrificed were enemies so the Greeks were fine with it.
They didn't. That's why they never called something they did "human sacrifice".
They choked their captives to death on the steps on the temples to the gods to show jubilant crowds the might of Rome, but were swift to accuse Gauls, Germans, Celts and others of human sacrifice and justify exterminating their cultures. It's not hypocrisy, it's the Roman Way!
cdcdrr - sorta like “enhanced interrogation”
@@cdcdrr Yep pretty much it. But on occasion they could be civilised. Arsinoe of Egypt and King Jubas son where meant to be sacrifised at Cecars triumph but it was halted due to the public outrage at sacrifising a woman and a boy. As for Vercingetorix he was less lucky. Apparanty civilised people must adhere to certain standards of barbarity.
Liked the title Iliad - Endgame.
Thanks for the upload
The lifelong companion Patroklos? With a BEARD? Omg THAT is a point for the lies-episode! And this is the first telling of the story I read / hear where Achilles does allow Patroklos to wear his armor. The whole Patroklos part is strange. Zeus has forbidden all the gods to mangle, but Apollo defies him?
I know it the way that Patroklos and Hector fight and but only after the dead of Patroklos the truth is revealed.
You guys are great .. keep it coming!
Wow they removed the moral of the story by removing the body returning part
Was that actually in the Illead, or one of its sequel stories?
Koen Kamphorst almost positive its the ending cuase the start is hear me speak of the wrath of achilles and ends with that so yeah. Its the heel thats not
Great Video but the version from overly sarcastic productions to this topic is better. Why you ask? Just the careless whispers makes everything better
Was the giant wooden horse in a different story then?
3:43 How can you not mention the fact that he shouts 13 Trojans to death?
Nice reference at the end to the first line of the Iliad
His mother should told him who was actually responsible for his friends death.
