It's 25 years since the Ducati 916 arrived on the world stage, and the motorcycle is widely regarded as perhaps the ultimate sportbike of the 1990s.
Its beauty transcended cultures and became a style and fashion icon, loved for its swooping curves and inventive aesthetics as much for its on-track success.
We were lucky enough to get a test on this stunning 1998 916 SP, the first production 916 to have a 996cc displacement.
We've also compiled a full feature on the history of the 916 that first appeared in 1994, and we'll post the link here when it's live.

Love the Ducati 916, greatest bike I ever owned. 1995 a friend of mine on a Ducati 851 and me on an old Honda CBX actually drove to Bologna to pick up my Ducati 916. I inherited some money which helped me buy my 916 outright. I ordered my bike from the Bologna factory about 6 months before I was due to collect it. So we left England via a ferry at Dover and rode all the way to Bologna, where I left my CBX and picked up my NEW 916 and the first trip was Bologna to Florence via the Futa Pass, it was HEAVEN. We toured Italy for 4 weeks before returning back to England. I wish I could turn the clock back to 1995 again.

I just bought a 1998 Ducati 916SPS. Had been looking for years but not many made it to Australia. It needs a bit of work and I'm slowly learning and restoring it in my shed. Haven't even ridden it yet. So to see this video as a long-form review by Rennie and the Cycle News team made my day! You are inspiring me to continue throwing large bundles of cash at this Poster Bike that I finally got to own. Great review as always, Rennie.

I’ve just become an owner of a 998. I don’t need any more inspiration but mare is always welcome! These bikes were a game changer and and all-time classic. So glad I finally got one! Never going to let it go.

Beautiful bikes they will always look sound and feel amazing! I own a 1993 Ducati monster, “The bike that saved Ducati.” And absolutely love it and I hope one day to have a 916 SPS sat alongside it 🙏 A man can wish haha. Great video thanks

My first love. Closest I've come to owning a 916 was my 748. One day I'll have an SPS in my garage... After 25 years and still the most amazing styling yet.

I own a 748, I thought it would be a great sunday rider at first. At 6'1" tall, its unbearable to ride all day. Now its my track only bike, 20 min track sessions all day is much easier to do with this bike. Love passing the newer liter bikes in the corners on my 20 year old sportbike. Thanks for this video.

Are you saying all liter bikes are slow? No other rider in the world on a 1kcc bike can beat you on the track?

Just traded in my 2001 996 Monoposto for a 1299S. Couldn’t agree more with your verdict. The 916/996 is a really good bike still by today’s standards and you can’t really go any faster on the public road anyway. The 1299 is fascinating in itself... been very lucky to be riding both in my life.

Great review, I am also hooked owning a 97 916 mono that I bought new after retiring from the USAF and later luckily lucked on a pristine 08 1098R and finally found a 2003 ST4s that has a rare Hella headlight conversion that I lucked up on also. Now, if I could just luckily find a 998r like the one I drooled all over at Pro Italia back in the early 2000's that was completely out of my price range LOL!! Once again, great review.

Great review, mine is a 998 with an 1198 in it and I have used the 998 in a 996 frame for a track day bike. Both have slight ergo changes Such a 6 degree fall clip ons and adjustable foot pegs, turns out very comfortable.

I cant believe the comments here. Ducati had been making great bikes long before the 916. It was the L twin and valve train that started Ducati off in 1972 at Imola . Then the 1975 750 TT 851 888 where wining racees . Mike Hailwoods farher was so convinced the bike will win races he inported 2000 biles from Ducati so Mike will have a Ducati to race on. Today people don't understand no Hailwood no Ducati bikes might be very true .

After owning my "dream bike", a 996SPS and feeling the pain of ownership back in 99 which put me off Ducati's for years, I bought a 1299S for track use and....WOW...guess with age all the problems with the 916/996/998 are forgotten...LOL

You’re riding it like you were on a gold pony on merry go round. Was someone else controlling the throttle ? Okay so you don’t want to break his bike. Not much of a road test is it ? Ride it like a real rider and it would try to rip your arms off. Mine tries to kill me every time I take it out ... it always tries to pull my arms out of its sockets. You were given an extremely sharp weapon & didn’t even slice the wind with it. The only thing going for this clip was seeing it & learning a bit of history.

Years ago I went on holiday for 3 weeks & rode mine from Bendigo to the Sunshine Coast & back. Stopping for overnight stays. I did 4 x 13 hour sessions (which including typical city comuting) stopping only for fuel & a bite to eat. Final figures well over 5000 km in 3 weeks (3100 miles). Rode it another 3 weeks around home before getting it serviced. It still runs fine. No ... that valve adjustment thing is a myth. That or my bikes well & truly overdue. I might add the trip up to Queensland was through torrential rain. The bike stuck to the road like glue. Even I was impressed going through the bends faster & faster as I went along, trying to find that point where you feel the bike wanting to let go . Then just holding the throttle & letting the bike do it’s thing ... If you have ever owned one ... Parting with it would have to be the hardest thing you will ever do. Not something I will ever do.
