Finally, someone vlogging in The Netherlands who visited one of my favorite places in the country: the tiny town of Madurodam (it actually has an official mayor and town council).😊
I lived in Utrecht between 1958 and 1962 before my family emigrated to the United States. I think I was around 5 when we visited Madurodam. The beautiful tiny buildings and landscapes remain some of the clearest memories I have of my time in the Netherlands. I was absolutely fascinated by the "toy" trains, planes and boats.
As someone who recently moved to the Hague im ashamed to admit ive stuck to all my usual franchise places to get coffee and spend my time, havent even stepped a foot in the Binnenhof😅😢 As a Dutch person I think I should act a little bit more like a tourist in my own country and explore what it has to offer. I will definitely be checking out that coffee place and the egg tart store!
Loved the video! I live in The Hague, but originally from Zeeland province. That area is famous for its long coastline, clean beaches and seafood. However, its pretty rural and harder to get to without your own car. The Hague has great beaches too, ranging from Scheveningen (very crowded, but having great bars and restaurants) to Duindorp (wide family beach that's much quieter) and both are easily reached by tram. Den Haag also has great walking and bicycle paths through the dunes linking Wassenaar, Scheveningen, Duindorp and Kijkduin beach areas.
The Hague is a city that ( in my opinion) deserves more then one video. For example there is a rotating art exhibition in the main hall of the stadhuis ( were city government is acutely seated) quite close to China town. Then there is the Markt (la street market in a permanent structure) four days a week, Also Scheveningen has in my opinion at least two attractions Panorama Mesdag and a Fish “ restaurant” Simonis aan de haven. ( Google them.) Just across the street from the Binnenhof is a square ( don’t remember the name) surrounded by restaurants that forms the Center of a almost completely car free shopping area. The Hague is actually THE place to eat out, for example Indonesian food. There is also a boat tour through the The Hague canals ( much more interesting then Amsterdam) or a city Center guided walking tour. Just scratching the surface here.
yeah, for sure - we feel the same about rotterdam and utrecht as well. we'll definitely be back. we go to den haag often - can't believe it took us a year to actually vlog there :)
Since the weather was cold this spring, the sea is this still cold. Dutch and Sealandic beaches are at their best on hot days in July, August and early September (>25C). On those days these beaches are among the best in the world. There are about 10/15 good ones that you can reach by train and a short busride. For instance Katwijk and Noordwijk can be reached by bus from Leiden CS and Bergen and Egmond from Alkmaar CS. Be aware that some of these beaches and the traffic to reach them can be busy on such days.
Since you guys mentioning wanting to spend time at the beach this summer , I highly suggest going to the international firework festival in Scheveningen. This year it will return due to covid and hundred thousands of people (not exaggerating) will be there. Its a firework competition, where countries perform firework shows at sea from a ship and there will be a winner at the end.
They should get a hotel though, because the whole Scheveningen will be locked down because of traffic, i remember years ago we even had to walk from the coast all the way to Madurodam as the trams were packed more than animal transport.
The local government of Den Haag works from a large white building (in Haags slang called Ijs Paleis…Ice Palace) not far from the Binnenhof. And a bit further away opposite the Malieveld is the building of the Province of Zuid-Holland, the regional authorities.
Beaches: Bergen aan zee (near Alkmaar) is a beautiful area with nice bike roads through nature. Extensive Dune landscape with woods. Specific the area between Bergen, Bergen aan zee, Schoorl all the way to Groet. (I think you need a pass in some areas though, through the VVV tourist office. You can rent bikes at Alkmaar trainstation or in Bergen.) Lots of space there, even some beaches that are only accessible by bike, so not too crowded. Other beach: Check out the island Terschelling, great for biking also.
A great beach is on the island of Schiermonnikoog in the north of the country. A non-touristy beach so no beach clubs or cafe's. Enjoy if you go there.
Modest tip: Try to visit Madurodam again at the end of the afternoon/beginning of the evening. During certain months Madurodam is open in the evenings and all the lights will be turned on when it gets dark. It's quite magical...
You kids are a lot of fun and do a great program. I spent a week in Amsterdam many years ago (thanks US Army!). I wonder what possessed my ancestors to move from the Netherlands to New York many years ago? Ah, well....thanks again. --Jan
@@janaaj1an889I appreciate that. Too many people here refuse to speak Dutch and some even feel offended when I initiate a conversation in my own language.
My residence. Glad you enjoyed it. You have to work on the pronunciation of "Scheveningen" though, but that will probably happen. (It's hard). Scheveningen beach is not what it used to be. My preference is for a quieter part of the beach at "Strandslag 7" at the end of De Savornin Lohmanlaan. Not a tourist spot but just a nice part of beach with a few beach bars nearby. Nothing fancy.
Rotterdam beach ( Hoek of Holland) of course . The Metro will take you almost directly on the beach. Beautiful beaches are Ouddorp en Renesse/Haamstede. Without a car is not easy to visit them.
My favorite beach is sunset beach on the west side of Ameland, one of the Wadden islands in the north. Or the beach near "Paal 9" at Texel, another Wadden island.
Couple more places to check out in Den Haag are: Scallys lunch room (for scones and tea and the decor), King Falafel (best falafel I ever had), Moksi (lekkerste Surinaams eten ooit voor mij) and Florencia (for a true/traditional Italian ice/gelato experience).
Do you know the history of Madurodam? Madurodam was named after George Maduro, a Dutch law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces, first as a lieutenant in the army and later as a member of the Dutch resistance, and who died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945. In 1946, Maduro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Knight Fourth class of the Military Order of William, the highest and oldest military decoration in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, for the valor he had demonstrated in the Battle of the Netherlands against German troops.
Den Haag or the Hague is a beautifull city....it is in the west near the beach of Scheveningen...and it's got a lot of nice things to do. But the best thing in the Hague ..is the local people and their sense of humor..wich is distinctly different from Rotterdam or Amsterdam. To describe their humor is; they can make fun of you, wich is a good thing, but they can also make fun about themselves at the same time. It is refreshing and direct, without being rude!! Go visit this third largest city!!! (ps..you can find posh people and not so posh people sitting side by side, the mix is funny in it self!!😁)
Dear Michelle and Alex, Thank you for another wonderful and humorous video! You ask for a recommendation of a beach. Well, you missed one during your visit to The Hague: the Scheveningen beach from 1880! This panorama of 120 x 14 meters was painted by Mesdag and the cylindrical arrangement suddenly puts you right in the middle of it. You will love it!
The Binnenhof doesn't house local or municipal politics. The provincial (regional) government is housed in the Provinciehuis, near the central station and Malieveld. The municipal council, as well as most municipal services for the city of The Hague are housed in the Gemeentehuis, on the Spuiplein. The Binnenhof normally houses the Eerste and Tweede Kamer (first and second chamber, otherwise known as the Senate and the Parliament), as well as providing offices for the government, and the office of the prime minister (in a little tower in one of the corners of the Binnenhof, "het Torentje"). All part of the national government. Currently though, the Binnenhof is being refurbished and renovated, so parliament, senate and most of the government have moved to a temporary location on the other side of central station, a building known as the "Apenrots" (the monkey rock).
Oh, I missed two great musea arpound the Binnenhof (inner court): the Maurits house with Vermeer's Girl with the pearl (voted by the Dutch as the best Dutch painting )and one "horrible" but must visite the Gevangenenpoort (prisinorer's gate) which is about torture in the middle ages.
if you like good icecream, you need to go to palazzo, at Scheveningen. They have homemade icecream with pepperminth flavour! Its the best icecream you can get at Scheveningen and The Hague! And an other tip: If you like animals, you must go to Avonturia De Vogelkelder. Its also in Den Haag and its realy awesome! Its actuly a large petstore, but it looks a bit like a small zoo... Its so awesome!
If you want a really good beach experience you should rent a vacation appartment at the beach in Blankenberge Belgium. Most appartments can be rent for a week. With the coasttram you can visit all places on the Belgian coast. It is wonderful
I am born in They Hague and lived there and worked there but I left after I was 24, but stil worked there. It was not easy to get a home so I moved out.. Scheveningen I lived the first 6 years of my live, walking distance from the beach. Wen I was a teenager I went to Scheveningen to dance with Live bands. It was a great time to live there as a kid and teenager.
I'm from The Hague and love my town. Don't forget Utrecht. Also a very nice place. I recognize the Dim sum place you enjoyed. Very good dim sum restaurant for sure. Luciano's is the best Italian icecream there is. The owner is my former classmate and won global prices with his icecream. Try Indonesian food.
The beaches on the Waddeneilanden are great. Its a bit of a trip to get the but its worth it i think. They are bigger so the feel les crowded the Waddeneilanden are a really nice experience overal. Next time you re in den Haag you should get your icecream at Marinello btw. Love your videos
For visiting beaches you can come to the isle Walcheren, in Zeeland. Stay in Middelburg and from there it is is about 10 -15 km to a lot of beautiful beaches and Middelburg is a very pretty city by the way.
Best beaches in the Netherlands are in the province of Zeeland… and the most beautiful are at the former island of Walcheren: Dishoek, Zoutelande Domburg, Oostkapelle, Vrouwenpolder. Easy to go by train from Dordrecht to Middelburg and get a rental bike and ride to those places… you’ll be amazed.
I really like the beaches in Zeeland. I was born there, so I might be slightly biased. But just do a long weekend Walcheren (by train), visit Middelburg, Vlissingen, Dishoek, Zoutelande. All these places are reachable by bicycle. Great vibe, oh and try the fries at a place called Het Smulhoekje in Middelburg :)
De mooiste stranden zijn de geschilderde stranden in de Mesdag Collectie, een museum waarvan het mij altijd verrast dat er niet permanent een lange rij wachtenden voor de deur staat zo mooi is het. En geen zand dat in je gezicht waait!
The courtyard (binnenhof) houses national politics. Local politics has its own town hall. You mention somewhere that the king has 3 palaces where he (can) live. Amsterdam is mentioned here. This is not officially a residential palace. It was built as a town hall. Napolion's brother wanted a palace in Amsterdam. Confessed the town hall and renovated it. The municipality of Amsterdam sold the building for a symbolic amount of 1 guilder to the state, which takes care of maintenance. It is now only used on foreign state visits. The palaces now. Huis ten Bosch (residential palace) Palace in Apeldoorn with a large piece of forest. Often used for hunting. And Palace korte voorhout the work palace
Indeed, Amsterdam's town hall was the showpiece of the Dutch Republic. And then the French revolution happpened which turned the Netherlands into a kingdom through Napoleon. After Napolean was beaten especially the British liked the idea of a buffer monarchy across the channel.
You look like such a fun couple! Great vlog as always. Born and raised here. I maybe biased but Den Haag has the best beaches. Scheveningen is populair but at the other end of the harbour you have the qiuet beach (known to people from Den Haag as "stille strand") and a few km to the west you have the small seaside Kijkduin.
Nice video. The Hague has a really cool car museum: Het Louwman museum. There are really fantastic other museums too, like The Mauritshuis, Panorama Mesdag, and so on, but others will mention them too. The Louwman always is sadly forgotten. It's really worth visiting. In the past I used to go to the Stille Strand (silent beach) in Scheveningen/Den Haag - because it isn't so crowded. Hence the name...
Refreshing video! If you ask me, the best beach is in Zeeland. Nearby the villages Dishoek and Koudekerke. It's the sand that I played in as a child, every summer. Lot of space, magical high dunes. Probably the highest in the Netherlands, around Valkenisse.
Have you been to the Spoorweg museum in Utrecht? It's another surpisingly fun place to check out. Best way to get there is to hop a stop train at Utrecht Centraal taking you right to the museum. You won't be disappointed.
Oh oh Den Haag, my city of birth...thanks for the nice video en fun impression. 👍👍 I guess you skipped "Panorama Mesdag" for a veeeryyy good reason , bc it's a must-see stunning painting of 120 x 14 meters.
a lot of beaches don't have much to offer other than the beach with a few beach bars/clubs and most that are easily reachable by public transport you've already covert (Hoek van Holland/Scheveningen/Zandvoort(not sure you've been here)). you could maybe make a video and visit multiple and compare them. maybe couple suggestions in the south: Maasvlakte strand (a bit of a weird one as it's so close to the port of Rotterdam) , Rockanje , Ouddorp, Renesse, Burg Haamstede, Domburg, Zoute lande, Cadzand
I worked for 6 years at the Palace of Justice in The Hague. Had a great time there. The Hague is a nice village (has no city rights). And I always teased my Hague colleagues about that :-)
I think that Scheveningen beach is a bit too busy in the summer. Zuiderstrand and wassenaarse slag are better if you are in Den Haag. The dunes and nature of Meijendel are also very nice if you want to get out of the city.
I am not a person who spends a day at the beach. But I do like to go for a bike ride or walk and then have a picnic on a quiet beach and lie down for an hour. Now my parents have a mobile home on Texel and there are more than enough beautiful beaches there. This Sunday I spent an hour out of the wind behind a dune on the nudist beach near den Hoorn
...and you have some amazing museums: Kunstmuseum, Escher at the Palace, Mauritshuis (with has the Girl with the Pearl Earring), Gevangenpoort, Museum Beelden aan Zee + Beeldenterras in Scheveningen...
Great beaches are in Zeeland . Special Schouwen Duiveland. Burgh Haamstede and Boswachterij Westerschouwen so so beautiful 😊my vacation province for 40 years now .🌟🌷
Favorite beaches for me are on the islands. Do you like busy beaches and choice of restaurants and villages, Texel is the place. When you like it more quit then the Frysian islands Ameland, Terschelling are a good place to go.
For great beaches theres really only one option. Or actually two. The Waddenislands Vlieland or Terschelling. Make a weekend out of it. You will not be dissapointed
Visiting Vlissingen and Middelburg in a summer weekend is fun. Vlissingen has the beaches. Middelburg has the beautiful and cozy city center. Train from Middelburg to Vlissingen is 5 minutes. The walk from the train station to the beach is 10 minutes. Come to Zeeland ;-)
The Chinatown( China block rather ,it's a just a few streets) was a very clever way to deal with that part of the city. It's in the centre, but used to be very dodgy part of town .Bit of an eyesore. A lot of drugs dealing, homeless people shelters ... A bit depressing really. But it had many private owned houses and some nice sites and protected historical building to just bulldoze it down . .So they turned it into 'China town'. It's still a bit dodgy, but has a far more positive vibe to it. Good food and a lot of Asian entrepreneurs.
They also have like big supersoaker events and the Police will join the fun bringing 2 giant supersoakers. And there's people singing and cooling down in swimsuits, enjoying the sun and free transportation to a mystery location after. It's like a pop up thing. 👍
@@buncharted It's a joke guys. On the A12 highway in Den Haag. Extinction rebellion 7th demo there and the Police hosed them with 2 water canon trucks. 1000+ people arrested and taken with busses to police stations. I figured you guys would get my joke cause it's headline news. Nice video again. Madurodam is cool for sure.
Den Haag is also known as an Indische (= Dutch Indies, our former colony Indonesia) stad. Hotel des Indes. So there is also good Indonesian food. You put local government at Het Binnenhof - nope! Den Haag is also capital of South Holland, so they host the provincial government as well.
🇨🇦 my grandparents lived in Den Haag from 1955 to 1985, they moved there from Arnhem (I still remember their address) and this was where our visit to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 always began. Love this city!
Hey you guys! Great video. I lived in all the big three cities. Den Haag is probably the highest rated for quality of living. It has more of a village feel than the other two. But it is far less exciting or dynamic than Rotterdam or Amsterdam. But all three are so close to each other that it does not really matter, it is all Randstad. The beach you say? Go to Zeeland period. The choice of beaches is the most varied (Zeeland consists all out of islands) and there is lots of history to be found in places like Middelburg, Veere, Vlissingen and Goes for example if it isn't beach-weather. Summertime is also the time of culturural activities like traditional ringrijden and mosselfeesten celebrating the locally produced mussels while drinking beer and listening to live music. And lets not forget our engineering world wonder the Delta-works. So plenty to discover! I can even hook you up with a good B&B run by lovely people. Just let me know.

@@buncharted yes, but it is a difficult name to pronounce for english-speakers and the second time was better then the first time (in this video)
@@buncharted Hilarious 😂😂😂
Lol
Rockanje beach is very nice 🙂 Not too far away from Rotterdam too.
Je bedoeld paleis Noordeinde is a working palace . Palace Lange Voorhout is dacht ik nu een Escher museum.
Inderdaad. Kon niet op de naam komen.
Hey guys love your channel! Are you planning to go to Maastricht in the future?
we went for the christmas market!

for koffie: go to Leerdam, the Glass-city. At "vierheerlijkheden"they make (burn) there own beans.
Recently you can take the Metro from Rotterdam directly to the beach of Hoek van Holland! A 35 minute ride! Nice walking, swimming and eating there!
Ahhh, my beautiful city .❤
Refreshing video! If you ask me, the best beach is in Zeeland. Nearby the villages Dishoek and Koudekerke. It's the sand that I played in as a child, every summer. Lot of space, magical high dunes. Probably the highest in the Netherlands, around Valkenisse.
Have you been to the Spoorweg museum in Utrecht? It's another surpisingly fun place to check out. Best way to get there is to hop a stop train at Utrecht Centraal taking you right to the museum. You won't be disappointed.
yes! we went in our utrecht vlog. it was a lot of fun!
Oh oh Den Haag, my city of birth...thanks for the nice video en fun impression. 👍👍
I guess you skipped "Panorama Mesdag" for a veeeryyy good reason , bc it's a must-see stunning painting of 120 x 14 meters.
we ran out of time! 😅
@@buncharted haha, yeah so much to see in DH. 🤩 Maybe some other time. I really recommend it. Have fun👊
@@lbergen001 there is a cheap city hotel from Fletcher so you can stay longer and see more.
Plein, Grote Markt, Piet Heijnstraat, Denneweg, Archipelbuurt, all of the parks, Haagse markt, Buitenhof, there is sooooo much in Den Haag.❤
Doubletstraat, Geleenstraat
@@100KGNattyHahaha, ik heb naast de Geleenstraat gewoond.❤😂
You could walk back to Rotterdam (Hoek van Holland) along the beach.
we always go to bergen aan zee
much more quiet because everybody goes to scheveningen
Yes! My hometown!❤
a lot of beaches don't have much to offer other than the beach with a few beach bars/clubs and most that are easily reachable by public transport you've already covert (Hoek van Holland/Scheveningen/Zandvoort(not sure you've been here)). you could maybe make a video and visit multiple and compare them. maybe couple suggestions in the south: Maasvlakte strand (a bit of a weird one as it's so close to the port of Rotterdam) , Rockanje , Ouddorp, Renesse, Burg Haamstede, Domburg, Zoute lande, Cadzand
Did you hear about the metro in Rotterdam now going to hoek van holland directly? Ideal if you just wanna stroll around the beach at night.
oh yes - we went right when it opened! we vlogged it - it’s the “we stayed in a ww2 bunker” vlog if you’re interested 😄
This Sunday I spent an hour out of the wind behind a dune on the nudist beach near den Hoorn
that’s what we prefer too!
we love to sit by the beach and read or snack for a bit and listen to the waves 🌊
For beach , Zoutelande or Dishoek , in Zoutelande a must do is a on top of the dune walk to Westkapelle . Enjoy !
...and you have some amazing museums: Kunstmuseum, Escher at the Palace, Mauritshuis (with has the Girl with the Pearl Earring), Gevangenpoort, Museum Beelden aan Zee + Beeldenterras in Scheveningen...
En het Louwman museum. Ik snap niet dat dat waanzinnig gave museum altijd zo ontzettend vergeten wordt.
yeah gotta love all of them drill rappers here ofc
i realy love Den Haag, i live here sinds 2010, i will never ever move again.
Have you visited Delft yet? It is small, very near Rotterdam and be-you-tee- full!
not yet 🥲
we have to go soon - there are just so many places we want to go!
When you like it more quit then the Frysian islands Ameland, Terschelling are a good place to go.
we’re quiet beach people - thanks for the tips!
The fourth city, Utrecht, has also trams.
Utrecht has a tram too.
oops! i don’t remember seeing one in utrecht 🤔
For great beaches theres really only one option. Or actually two. The Waddenislands Vlieland or Terschelling. Make a weekend out of it. You will not be dissapointed
Best Beaches in The Netherlands are the ones you can access only by Bikes. From North of Scheveningen until Haarlem, just explore!
@13:24 shenanigan beach?
wha - where?
@@buncharted It's a joke guys. On the A12 highway in Den Haag. Extinction rebellion 7th demo there and the Police hosed them with 2 water canon trucks. 1000+ people arrested and taken with busses to police stations. I figured you guys would get my joke cause it's headline news.
Nice video again. Madurodam is cool for sure.
oh, haha - that totally went over my head. i didn't realize it happened in den haag 😅
No favorite beach, but you should probably skip the overcrowded Zandvoort in the summer!
FULL MOON IS THE BEST! You should go for dinner too
Den Haag is also known as an Indische (= Dutch Indies, our former colony Indonesia) stad. Hotel des Indes. So there is also good Indonesian food.
You put local government at Het Binnenhof - nope! Den Haag is also capital of South Holland, so they host the provincial government as well.
Noordwijk strand is een mooi schoon strand met een leuke boulevard
And you missed “de haagse markt”😊 I like scheveningen beach and the beach near monster.
Frederique van der Wal who played Amazonia in Wild Wild West 1999 movie was born here and today in 2024 is her birthday 🎂🎈
🇨🇦 my grandparents lived in Den Haag from 1955 to 1985, they moved there from Arnhem (I still remember their address) and this was where our visit to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 always began. Love this city!
Thats not a coffeeshop....... Coffeeshops sells something complety different😢😂
What I'm thinking everytime😂
The local government has his own building near the central train station.
Love your videos! We are definitely moving to den Haag now! As Americans, any advice on setting up a company as self employed for residence permits?
check out our “tips for moving to the netherlands” video - and maybe contact an immigration attorney too, since they can guide you through the entire process! good luck with the move!!
@@buncharted thank you so much. Maybe we can meet up for coffee soon!
