- One year ago I moved to the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 And moving abroad: it’s a big exciting step, but, it can also be scary! You feel that the new country is where you were meant to be, but some days throw you totally out of place. Since the time I have been here, I have learned a lot about the culture, people, food, and the Netherlands itself. I will share with you 7 things you should know before moving to the Netherlands! 🌷

Starting from a water proof jacket, it is really welcome and a water proof shoes as well. Then we can wear them up and go to the duines. Until beginning Nov. I was enjoying going to kennemerland duines, and schoorls close to Akalmar. Ah Marken Island is also cool, really small as Myra said, half an hour by bike you can see the whole island, but worthy if you go by bike in a sunny day :-)
Public transportation - Yeah they are great, but remember of checking in and out with your card otherwise you lose your credits/money. During 1 year you can get refunded for 3 times if you forgot to check out. You can forget to check out 3 times in each type of transportation.
Date a dutchie, makes it so much easier! 🥰😉✌🏼

We start talking Dutch because we are in the Netherlands. Just like when u are in Germany they start in German then switch, as in France they start in French..... ehh and keep talking French.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact we made a bunch of our landmass from scratch, like the land you live on, Flevoland! It used to just be sea, then we turned it into a lake, and now there's polders, so basically new land. I don't like my country, mostly because of our horrible language and the fact we only get a little bit of snow during winter, but I can't deny it's a very interesting country. For example, we are the reason carrots are orange! We were the first country ever to legalize same-sex marriage and throughout history have been the most accepting and tolerant European country, especially during the Renaissance, many enlightened thinkers moved here so they could actually do research and publish their works! I'm a history freak okay I can't help it and I don't often get to share things like this. If you want to know more fun facts or want me to explain some I already said, just let me know! I'd be happy to. I also can't forget to mention the fact we once ate our prime minister, I'm not joking.

In response to 6:38: in American English, a blouse is a shirt for women specifically. They don't need to have buttons, but they can. Blouses also tend to be loose-fitting garments. A men's shirt with buttons is referred to as a button-up or a button-down, depending on where in the US you would live. There's an actual distinction between the two, but most people either don't know it offhand (like myself) or don't care. To distinguish blouses and button-ups further, you would refer to the sleeve type. So you could have a short-sleeve blouse or a long-sleeve button-down, for instance.
Oh waw, that feels so cursed as a Dutchman. Here a bloes (blouse) is, basically always, a shirt with buttons made out of a sturdy and thin fabric, no matter the sleeve length. And shirts are just long sleeved t-shirts. Neither have anything to do with what gender they were designed for.
I feel that this is generally an easier way to distinguish clothing, which also isn't only limited to shirts and blouses, but also sweaters/hoodies/vests (or zip-up hoodies). I'm curious about why this difference is a thing between languages, seeing how clothing generally isn't very different across the globe.
I really enjoyed this video. My wife and I, prior to the "pandemic" visited the Netherlands on an yearly basis once spending three months straight there (the maximum amount of time that we could stay as foreigners). In our humble opinion the entire country is very picturesque. Because of its size it's easy to see it without spending days travelling. The most difficult question I have ever had to answer is "what is my favourite city/town/village in the Netherlands"? The fact that we have been returning to the Netherlands on an yearly basis as of 2010 is an indication of how beautiful this country is.

And I can see how it stays so nice and well because its a smaller size nation it makes it easier to have the things it has. The lower amount of people helps with cleanliness, crime rate, and other matters so its no surprise that its a great place. Places like that size can very much do what this country and others like it are able to do. Its like its cozy.
Hi Adi, just to let you know. Utrecht - not Amsterdam - is the central city for all connections by train as it is the largest, busiest and most central station in the country...

I’m in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 on holiday. I’m enjoying it so much. I see myself living here if the UK no longer serves me. I’m very interested in foreign languages. I know a couple of European languages already. Most of the time I’m learning German. Dutch is an interesting language and I’m already reading 📖 and familiarising myself with signs 🪧 and notices

If you truly live in Flevoland, I advice you to go with a car to the fields around Zeewolde if I am right. As in that's now a flower heaven (tulips all the way you can see). It differs from year to year when it's full of them. But as far as I hear till now, it's now the right time to go. And it's way quieter to go there then to go to the Bollenstreek. Its truly a nice experience if you love nature/calm.

Just a little comment about Lelystad. I was there long ago (1975!) to visit with my family who lived outside of the city. I remember going to the pool with my cousins. Hearing you say the name "Lelystad" brought back wonderful memories.

My mother was Dutch born and raised in Amsterdam Holland, she met my dad an American Soldier Stationed in Germany during WW2, after the Liberation they married in Amsterdam, with my Opa , Opa and families, my mother came to America with my Daddy settling in Jacksonville Florida, they had 5 boys n 1 girl ( Me being the Oldest a girl ) my daddy took my mother back on Vacation along with the children in 1958 we were in Amsterdam 2 years, watching your videos l am reminiscing about my stay in the Netherlands, l wish we could have stayed ! l think our lives would have been much better, l have a lot of my mothers personality of course l have my daddies countrymen southern accent ! @@LetsMeetAbroad Hey Adi, Yes. The show was telecasted on 24 dec 2021 as Kerstspecial. It was crazy to see her after 402 days in Lapland,Finland. I was shocked with receiving a VIP treatment from Schipol Airport to Sneek.
I am a german and I make a Bikcycletour through the Netherland almost every Year. And I was in Lelystad very often. But this is the first time I see that Skulpture! Seems like I missed that out.
You can take your bike with you in the trains to, but outside of "spitsuur". Cost about 6 euro 10 extra for a whole day. But it's worth it as certainly in places like Zeeland, trains aren't as frequent and busses don't get everywhere and if you don't own a car, this can be very handy. I always see the video's about bicycles missing this part of information. It helps so much. Not to forget you can also just rent an OV-fiets, which is cheaper.

There are Thai people here. No worries.
And upon arrival, don’t take a taxi which is not in the taxi line. Public transport is fine and cheaper than the use of taxis.
We had some issues with scammers posing as taxi drivers, trying to pick up rides in the main hall of Schiphol. Then they would charge €400 for a €10-€40 trip. Not how you’d want to arrive in The Netherlands

6:46 For men, it's a shirt, or buttoned shirt. For women, it's a blouse, which is a French word and in France it can be used for a buttoned shirt, blouse, t-shirt or any other garment worn on the upper body. In Dutch blouse means buttoned shirt but has become less common as it starting referring to a specific type of loose fitting, light weave buttoned shirts.

Thank you for a great vid. As for the language, I think it’s okay to move with no language or the very basics, but after, if one wants to stay and make a life in the country, it is …well… a kind of coming without saying that one learns a language. I live in Québec which is francophone but as it is Canada and it is indeed not very complicated to function here with English and 0 French, some assume that they will do their best to consciously avoid learning French at all but still stay and profit from everything that the land has to offer. It pisses me off honestly. So it’s always cool to see people who actively value the culture and the language of the place they came to live in, I think it’s just very normal :)

Okay making appointments 3 months in advance is for big happenings like celebrations or whatever but just for a cassual meet up I would say 2 or 3 days in advance is okay but never the day before or on the day itself because changes are big I have already planned something but you can always try🤷🏻♀️

Thats not the reason we bike. Biking in the netherlands is most of the time the most easy and fast way to get somewhere. Its free, And you can ride it when your drunk.. thats also a reason haha. That its good for the environment is great but for most not the reason
Dutch people bicycle a lot in the big cities because it is the fastest way to get around. In most big cities you can get from A to B in 15 minutes with a bicycle and parking is free. Using a car means you have to drive at least 20 minutes, next you'll spend 30 minutes finding a parking spot which will cost you an arm and a leg per 15 minutes and is about a 25 minute walk away from the place where you need to be.

Well, my experience of living abroad is that you're automatically at a head start if you HAVE made the effort to speak the language, and then your concerns about weather and bla bla bla, whatever - you don't even take any notice of it because you have so many more things to do, so many more opportunities to get involved in.

In dutch when we say shirt we almost always mean a T-shirt. We call a button-up shirt a blouse or "overhemd"

A blouse is a button shirt! 😂 Or sometimes lacey without buttons but then it has a certain blouse style. Afrikaans here. Schedules so important I do it even though it is not custom in SA!!! It is just what makes me comfortable.

I wish we were as punctual as the Dutch. I have been frustrated enough by friends and relatives to know the pain of reaching some place in time and just stand and wait there for half an hour or more. Really really really annoying.
Btw, If you won't mind answering it, how much social importance is attached to owning a house or apartment by dutch society ?
Thank you! 😄 haha we know that feeling! Owning or renting is not connected to 'social importance'. However, owning a house is in the end way way cheaper, that's why everyone wishes for each other that they are able to find and buy a house! But it's not easy anymore..

Ok ... I never had this experience where you schedule an appointment far ahead, in order to meet up with friends.
Mostly it's within days or next week or so. You need to know it's a small country, so not much distance to cover.
So sometimes people come by unexpected, yet it's no problem to come back at a later time, due to short travel distance.
I think they are wrong on this part.

Whats the process of starting a food business in netherlands?
Tonight is the first time that I have seen this video- to make your lives more complicated-for a man it is a shirt; for a woman a blouse- even though the two items seem almost identical. How is the Netherlands for retirement? Weather- New York winters are pretty tough. Cold, and a lot of snow. You are farther north, so darker/ very short days in December and January. New York summers are hot and very humid many days- so for a guy like me, Nederlands weer is not so bad. Heeft Adi roh haring met ui gegetin- yummy.
Thanks John, we think it is pretty good place for retirement. The weather is pretty consistent. Not super cold in winters and summers are pretty descent
like 15 year sago in amsterdam we would have a lock on are bike that was much more exspensive then are bike so it wont get stolen
Hi guys, shifted to Netherlands from India and saw your videos…..How was your experience trying to make Dutch friends, as I too shifted in October last year, and only interactions I had with Dutch people is in shops and stuff. Kinda lonely here tbh
Hi I am Dutch and I fully agree with the fact that even though the english of Dutch people is pretty good, they prefer to revert back to the dutch language whenever the occasion arises. It is hard to break into Dutch friendgroups (we often stay close with our high school/uni friends). So, we are some tough cookies to crack, what can you do about it? Ofcourse learning the Dutch language would be a solution, even a few words is a great beginning. However, I have a special tip for you that can maybe further spark you creativity to enable you to create some relations here, so listen. Dutch people are pretty opinionated, we all think we know it pretty well and want to share our two cents whenever we can. So what does this mean? Well... We love to teach! Explain things. About our culture, our language... What's wrong with certain politicians. Anything. If you ask us about what we think about certain things, or let us explain things to you, you are gonna crack us open. So go out there man! Ask that dutch woman about what cheese she buys. Ask some kids on the street if they can teach you a funny Dutch swear word. Ask the guy on the park bench if he can tell you something about the history of the city you're in. You can even pick one topic and document your journey, just like our friend Adi is doing. Get out there brother! There are stories to be discovered.

It also helps to take up a leisure activity or sport in a society (vereniging, not sure about English translation). Dutchies are more open and have more time to get to know new people there. My Dutch husband moved from a big city to the village I grew up in. And this is how he met new people outside of my family and friends.
In shops most people really just want to get the stuff they came in there for and go elsewhere.

I'm here for one more week and dreading going back to the US =) I loved your video and I hope to fall in love with a Dutch man and live happily ever after LOL (a girl can dream right?) It depends where you are from. A RN might get a job but it would be hard because of the language barrier. The way anything medical is taught is country specific. But it is doable. There are a few YT channels you can take a look at who just recently made the move. One even that is in the process of relocating.

For all the people who come to the Netherlands (especially at this time of year) when you want to see the tulips: only stay ALONG the fields and do not walk through them. It can destroy the flowers, making them useless to the farmers.
Most farmers are therefore now closing off the fields, so you can no longer come close to them.
Please take this into account.
