I wasn't rich enough to rent an apartment in the NL, so I had to buy one. The rent prices in the NL are ridiculously high relatively to the actual value of the properties.
@@giampaolomannucci8281 I could rent an apartment but it makes no economic sense in the NL, unless you stay for a short period. Price is a relative term, don't look just on the cash amount. When I came in the NL the rent was twice as high as mortgage payment for the same apt. Why would I pay a rent? The mortgage payment additionally has a tax deductible component. i.e. I was not rich enough to throw away money when completely unnecessary.
How do you buy a place if you're not rich enough to rent though? Houses are expensive at the moment and you need quite a good salary for the bank to even give you a mortgage... Add in tutiton at say the university of Amsterdam and thats about $7500+ so all around looking at $10,000-$15,000 up front to move there in the first month then after that its $2500 per month maximum according to the video
But the food is extremely cheap, I did notice a big increase in sugared donuts from the Jumbo tho.First it was 4 for 0.89, now it's 4 for 2.04. The Jumbo also stopped selling Mars chocolate for now.
As a Dutch person who just had 20 viewings before finding a decent place to live.... This is (even for a year ago) very optimistic. You make it sound like there is no housing crisis here? Eindhoven is not considered affordable. Maybe some student houses, yes... if you get one. There are so many international students who have no idea what they are in for when they come here, at least be honest :)
Can you please make a video on how to find your "first" apartment when you just arrive in the Netherlands? Assuming the person does not have a local address, bank account or a permanent phone number. All the house-hunting videos are for someone who has all those three things. But I could not find one video that tells you how to find an apartment when you first arrive and have no bank account.
Looks like I've been missing out. In California, my expensive tiny apartment I shared with 2 other people was $2000/m per person. $800 a month would have been a steal.

Groningen is growing faster than the city (and university) can build, and that reflects in the prices. It's the most expensive city in the north of the country.
Tipping isn't really a thing here. so if you are really stingy and just want to pay for food you can leave out the tip. everyone here makes an hourly living wage, and tips usually end up in a shared jar to be divided between staff at the end of the shift.
90€-280€ a month for groceries? Please show me a meal plan for 3€ a day that covers ~2000 kcal and will not make you sick over time. All the price ranges seem a bit unrealistic on the low-end.

I lived in The Netherlands for decades, leaving in the late 90"s. It was quite expensive to live in Holland then, but now it's ridiculous.. It is not uncommon to pay well over 400,000 euros for a 100 sq meter apartment in many areas.. Gasoline is expensive. New cars are expensive. Utilities are expensive. Restaurants are expensive. Even a beer in a cafe is expensive.. People living there are taxed to death by the government and a significant amount of residents don't work and live off government payouts.. I have been gone for 23 years, visited once and have no plans on returning..
400.000 euro's for 100 SQ meter? I wish! For that you can buy a 1 bedroom apartment or studio in Amsterdam for example, perhaps The Hague or Rotterdam would be cheap enough for this still but Utrecht and Amsterdam Definitely not. 1:52 I visited Groningen a lot when I was younger. We live in Germany basically at the border, so it’s the closest bigger town in de Nederland 😅
Amazing job with this video !!
it's 10000% accurate and up to date on everything regarding living in NL.
Great job once more!
im not planning on moving to the NL, im not even planning on moving at all but i just stopped by this video and when i noticed the amount of subs you have i said no no no, unacceptable (is that right?). So here im helping the algorythm. Amazing video, i loved it. new sub fs :)
As a german its really interesting to see how the prices differ :o Keep up the great work, i love your videos ♥️
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 NIV
ROMANS 10:9-11 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame”
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.””
Luke 19:10
God wants us to believe in His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, who died for our sins :D When we truly believe in our hearts that Jesus is the Son of God, who died for our sins so we could have eternal life with God, we are saved from the eternal fire and have eternal life in Christ Jesus!! 💖 May God bless you all!! 🤗❤️

Thank you for this video! Very informative and fun to watch at the same time! Have a great time it the NL!
thanks for sharing Erika. You sounds likeable person, the backsong makes the video better too. When i was in university, i was looking postgraduate scholarship there. But when covid came, i cancelled my plan. Now i am working and hopefully able to continue career or studying in Netherland. Greetings from Indonesia.
Hot tip for train travel: often you can find good deals for day travel cards online. Cheapest I found were 13.50 for unlimited traveling for one day
hallo, where i can find this bargain :) ?
Thank You! This is really helpful, the editing and your narration adds a really nice touch to the video!
Went on summer break to my home country and you just reminded me what living will cost again 🫠
Your presentation is very unique and I love it so much. Keep going😍
This is the content I’ve been looking for! Thanks a lot , subscribed!
Probably in the next 3 to 4 years it's going to more expensive but I am even more determined to get to the Netherlands
Can't wait for it
@@Waterdiver3900 That’s pretty much everywhere in the world at the moment, unfortunately. I’d rather have less money and better healthcare and less worried about getting slaughtered in the streets in the US.
@@Reallyshouldachanhed You are right. I've been living in the US for 20 years, but is time for me to get out. My husband already left in the Netherlands just a few days ago, he has a job and a place to stay. I have to take care of a few things here and then i go there too. I cannot wait! You should move out of the States too, is not safe anymore and the Health Insurance is a piece of garbage. Good luck.
@@Waterdiver3900 Mark dosn't care about that, They'll be let in if they want to move to the Netherlands.
@@Waterdiver3900 No it isn't that statement literally has only ever been said by NIMBY's or people who hate foreigners. Both groups absolutely cringe, and not representative of the dutch culture of tolerating and accepting others (first during the ''Moedernegotie'' then when the ''Hugenoten'' fled and came to the Netherlands, but actually, all throughout our history)
I am pretty sure you've never been to Wageningen (or other prime examples of multiculturalist society), are not a real dutch person, and should be literally ashamed that you don't know our history.
LOL. Socialism is the for rich. You plebians get "free" stuff only because you are plebians.
Thank you for such a thorough video on what it costs to live in the Netherlands. ✌️🙌❤️
I never realized a train ticket was based on time. When I buy an "enkeltje" or "retourtje" Gouda - Groningen the ticket is valid when I take the trip in one go, or when I stop to shop for a few hours in let's say Amersfoort for a few hours.
I wasn't rich enough to rent an apartment in the NL, so I had to buy one. The rent prices in the NL are ridiculously high relatively to the actual value of the properties.
doesn't make much sense, you couldn't afford to rent one so you bought one?
isn't buying more expensive than renting?
@@giampaolomannucci8281
I could rent an apartment but it makes no economic sense in the NL, unless you stay for a short period.
This story doesn't make much sense to me
Edit: Oh I see in your reply, you just worded it very poorly lol. You could afford to rent an apartment but decided not to, that's something different than suggested in your original comment. I was like "ain't no way you can buy a place if you cannot even afford to rent". Both are expensive options right now depending on where you live, good thing I'm not planning on staying in this country lmao
Bikes don't always have right of way and tipping isn't required (more of a good will gesture if the service and/or food was actually decent).
Honestly, everything seems comparable or actually cheaper than where I live in the U.S. I am learning German and Dutch and would love to work and live in the Netherlands someday.
I think we earn less, live way smaller, pay way more taxes and gas is way more expensive. Probably something to take into account!
@@user-zc6ug3qh3z but your quality of life is way better. You don't spend all odf your time in your car driving in a highway
Same, I currently live in Los Angeles, and I'm salivating over the COL described in this video.
@@misa80209 See you when you are robbed and beaten by a gang of moroccans. Or when you are told to wait ten years for housing while illegal invaders get housing within a year and free money. We also have the highest taxes in the world and no police-protection. Get your facts right before talking sh*te.
please do not move to the netherlands. We are at capacity. There's not enough space, and our stupid government keeps letting too many migrants in. It's ridiculous that domestic Dutch students can't find anywhere to live in their own damn country.
Love your straight to the point videos! 🌸
Finally! a good video on this subject. Thank you
Thank you, girl! That was really interesting and informative ❤️ wish you success with your channel!
awesome video, thank you so much! i'm moving to utrecht this fall so this is very helpful :)
Let me know when you get there please, i am planning too and i would need some informations ! Thank you in advance😇
Very cool video! 1 big tip for you tho. buy 4 croissants at once at Jumbo or Albert Heijn (not sure for Lidl and aldi) use ur discount card and pay 1 euro per 4. Life saving advice here. 😉
The rent is more or less the same with living in Madrid. I live 40 mins outside the centro and I pay more or less 380€ a month (water and electricity included - no gas since the heater and stove is electric).
Love your editing and my first video. Definitly subscribing. I was once in Amsterdam and looove the city. Merci
Erika! tips in The NL! Tell me more! I wasn't aware our American penchant for tipping had leaked over the pond to the continent. Nice job, young lady. Keep it up.
Ik zou sowieso geen fooi geven. Prijzen zijn inclusief fooi.
I just loved your video, thank you for this huuuuge content
If ur getting the train make sure u get the ticket before getting on. Even if the journey is short there’s no option to buy a ticket off the conductor onboard like in certain other countries 👍🏻
perfect video erika. It covers a lot of things and have a very nice editing. thanks a lot!
so ive done math if your going to go all out live in amsterdam and paying the max amount for everything she was saying you could get a nice studio apartment a 100$ bike and lots of grocery each month for about 2532$ or a bit less in euro im not quite sure im doing usd personally and the bike would be a seperate up front purchase. Add in tutiton at say the university of Amsterdam and thats about $7500+ so all around looking at $10,000-$15,000 up front to move there in the first month then after that its $2500 per month maximum according to the video
greaatttt video
I forgot to take notes on the prices, guess I'll have to rewatch it 😅
it would be nice if there was a summary at the end
That's a fair point! But I remembered about it after I already published the video :D but i'll keep in mind for next time :))
Thanks for detailing everything. 🎉 like it!
Thanks For the Infos I’m moving to Overijssel Next month and let’s see how it’s Gonna be 🙌🏼
But the food is extremely cheap, I did notice a big increase in sugared donuts from the Jumbo tho.First it was 4 for 0.89, now it's 4 for 2.04.
But I could not find one video that tells you how to find an apartment when you first arrive and have no bank account.
u are idiot? just buy phone number in jumbo xDDD find job in agency and go to ING groep ehhh
awesome video. thanks for sharing. Your channel is inspiring me on my UA-cam journey
As a UT student, I appreciate the University of Twente coverage in this vid 😤🤝
"Not so well known cities like Eindhoven or Groningen"... Well.. if I'm not mistaking, Groningen is THE student city of The Netherlands?
this is true, can confirm
Looks like I've been missing out. In California, my expensive tiny apartment I shared with 2 other people was $2000/m per person. $800 a month would have been a steal.
i live in the netherlands my whole life and I like this and its kinda true
Super straight to the point love it want to move to the netherlands even more now

Half the video I had this weird feeling that for some reason I know the background footage and turns out it's Enschede, a 40 minute drive from Münster where I live. The coffeeshop gave it away haha
Ik hou heel erg van Nederland, met de hoge kosten van levensonderhoud and alles, maar ik kon echt niet tegen dat vreselijke weer. Miss u, Holland 😢
The picture you showed for Groningen is actually Utrecht! 😀 Groningen is also less affordable than Rotterdam generally.
Klopt.
Groningen is growing faster than the city (and university) can build, and that reflects in the prices. It's the most expensive city in the north of the country.
@@stefangrobbink7760 Het is inmiddels een van de duurste steden van Nederland.
Just what I needed to hear
You did such a great job.
Tipping isn't really a thing here. so if you are really stingy and just want to pay for food you can leave out the tip. everyone here makes an hourly living wage, and tips usually end up in a shared jar to be divided between staff at the end of the shift.
also the idea you pay per hour for public transport. we pay for distance not time
Marktplaats is also a good Dutch alternative for Facebook marketplace.
90€-280€ a month for groceries? Please show me a meal plan for 3€ a day that covers ~2000 kcal and will not make you sick over time. All the price ranges seem a bit unrealistic on the low-end.
4:45I didn't understand the microwave part ? Bikes & microwave?
Great content. Really helpful. Well explained.
You said tip is 10-15% but in my experience you never need to tip. Its Nice of you if you do tip but these people get paid around as much as you since pay is very close to each other between jobs.
This helps me so much when I’m looking for where to live. Ngl. I’m trying to get out of America.
Thanks a lot for such video. I wish to move and live in Netherlands.

Can you please recommend websites and groups for rent searching?
Kamernet, paparious, fund and roomspot. They re all okay, some you need to pay a subscription :/ one of the best places is facebook groups. Just like "city name" and "wohnen" or "renting" something like that. Hope this helps
@@helloerika You are amazing thank you so much❤️
Great video! ❤️
I completely understand why you don't want to return here to be honest, it's fun at times but otherwise a tad depressing to be honest
"Holland" isn't a country.
