30 years ago I built my first proper set (Driver, 3W 2i-SW) bought all the parts from a company called Golfsmith in Austin, TX. I couldn't afford the Ping Eye 2's so I bought the knock offs. I enjoyed it and seeing people's faces when I would tell them I built them.
Matching up the lengths using the butt end of the grips was a great move... ... I have a portable gripping station that mounts to a vice .. Bought from GolfWorks here in the US for about $30-$40. Definitely worth it... The grips slide right on with a push on the club head side
Great tuition James clear and thorough and enjoyable,e to watch. Hope they played well - look forward to seeing them in action and how you altered the lie of each club.
Thanks James Great video. Just finished building a 3 iron from components bought on eBay. It was a surprisingly easy process. Mind you, I haven’t hit a ball with it yet! Fingers crosssed.
I just did the same thing!!! I bought a set of Cleveland TA-3 forged iron heads, used some shafts I had in my basement, and am now waiting for the glue to dry. I did spine alignment on these so it will be interesting to see how they feel and play. Best of luck with yours!!
On another note, I completely regripped my clubs and the wife's clubs in February, decided to give'er a go, I watched your method, saw a video on using compressed air, which means you can use the clubs immediately after, however I like the idea of regrip in late winter and play in summer... this way you can get some practice in after the season closes with the grips you're used to... Get the wife some new grips for Christmas, buy a new set for yourself, then pop them on after the new year mess... Then get some practice in with the new grips before the season starts.. THAT was the plan.. We know what happened in the new year that put a real downer on that plan... but courses are now open! Great content James! Very nice How-To video you put together. Honestly, you did a great job!
Really cool what you are doing James and to play golf with them would be legend. Hopefully you will like your creation so much that they stay in your bag for many years to come
Swing weight should be checked and correct before the assembly of the clubs not after. Now when James had to correct the swing weight he had to do it by inserting lead powder mix with glue from butt end of the shaft to the club head.
I really enjoy watching your videos, especially the ones that aren't just a review. I find the one like this one really interesting plus with the lock down a little break from what going on thanks
Top tip on the grip tape side of things. Always leave some excess at the top of the shaft to plug the opening. Otherwise dirt can get into the shaft through the pinhole in the top of the grip. Long term your else up with that horrible gritty rattling sound when you move the club.
I've just done some Callaway x forged 2009 ,took out some DG S300 which were getting a bit heavy, and replaced them with DG sl . Used the online formula for swingweight and did D1 in 3/4 irons up to D4 on the pw. Not been able to use on the course yet but feel great in the net!
Great video James, I still game MP33's and had them since new (2003) 4 years ago I sent my off to Roger Morton who is a highly renowned club make and finisher (based in the UK) He re-chromed my entire set of irons, they came out absolutely fantastic. In fact, you would have thought they were brand new
Duncan Leaper I used to live near Shifnal where Rodger is based. He did adjustments on my irons and fitted new grips for me. Very professional service and a lovely bloke to boot!! Highly recommended.
I've built my own clubs for years and I really really enjoy it! Without sounding like a nob the only thing I'd suggest is using proper shafting expoxy and not araldite... Shafting expoxy is designed not to sheer so you won't have any issues with heads flying off... I have seen araldite'd heads flying off in the past...
I had a Titleist AP2 head fly off while playing, they were made by Titleist. I put together my current irons like James did and have had no problems but I did use the 24 hour epoxy.
Good job James, most club guys (geeks like me) could offer lots of suggestions but you ended up with a good product and for any diy project that's the point. Thank you for providing content during this difficult time by being very creative and always sticking to your promise of a video daily. I think England opened their courses this morning so get out there.
@@JamesRobinsonGolf It's entertainment, like you said, it was not a "how-to" video. I build clubs, just built a set of Legacy Blacks (Stenson) with PX 6.0's. Its hard when you dont have the proper tools and a bench etc...You did great! I love those C-Taper Blacks. I do hope that epoxy holds though! Kidding!
Got lead tape on my Wilson Staff Tour Blades and these up the swing weight nicely. Yours are 10 grames and get you about 6 to 10 yards extra(on mine at least). Put it lower will get the ball up better and 2 on the wedges makes play around the green a delight.Great video James.
Way aback when Golf Smith was going strong back in the 80s I built all my own clubs from components. For myself and friends, really enjoyed it. And they did too.
Looks sickkkkkk, love the blacked out look, I seen a website that refinishes club heads, you could get the heads refinished in black aswel, that would look unreal!!
The swing weight is normally done prior to gluing heads on. SW slugs often have a lip and you glue them into shaft, the lip stops them falling into shaft while head glue wet. They maybe D1 or similar as you built them. I played a new set of 33s on rifle shafts and were poetry. I should never have sold them. Back then they were only about 450quid. 3i-SW
Enjoyed the video again James. I haven't built a club for about 17 years, but memories came back. Mostly fond ones. I'd say you did alright too mate. Love to see a video comparing these to your current model Mizuno irons on the flight sim for accurate data!
Crackin job James u made it look so easy. But that hammer last time I seen one of those I got one for Christmas in a tool set when I was 6 years old 🤣🤣. 👌👍
Good effort. Well done. I build/customise my own too. Glad you mentioned swing weighting at the end :-) I use acetone to clean the ferrules and take of excess epoxy.
I use to work at Outland in pro shop on a Saturday and when I regripped clubs I would use petrol as the lubricant. Was quite a small working space as well. High as a kite I was.
That’s the only rub with buying irons blind at auction. Really important to get the loft and lies checked. Keep the irons naked James they look great and stealth especially with the Matt black shafts! Bring back at of memories for me MP 33s😢
For tight ferrules, I used steam to get a perfect fit without any fancy equipment or hammering. Just slip them on the end of the shaft, steaming the shaft/ferrule over a tea pot for a few minutes to expand/soften the ferrule plastic, the use the head to push the ferrule up to the perfect spot for each club. You just have to be careful not to steam too long or it’ll make the plastic ferrule uneven thickness at the head. You can fix this with an Emory board and some acetone but better to just be cautious.
You are ENTERTAINING as always, James.... the only thing surprising was that you did NOT use "info" from a recent video of yours where you had some flex expert talk in great detail about which side of the shaft is ideal for facing forward based on shafts do not flex the same in any direction. I naturally expected you to use that shaft flex test info in building this set when i seen the title of this vid
They look STUNNING. My dream clubs. I have bought two heads recently and am building two 3 irons. I also recently regripped a wedge too. I love it. Great video James, cheers.
I love the process of club building and badly want to do it myself some day. I think I will begin with “just” learning to regrip my own clubs. This was so fun to watch! Love those MP-33s ! 😀
A couple of big words in club building {Swing weighting and Epoxy lap strength} you should have sent the shafts to me first James and I would spines the shafts for you . But a least the Mizuno’s will be easy to loft and lie being nice soft forged club heads. [Golf works Lancashire]
James, definately do a head to head with these VS your fitted set, on the sim...and on the course when you can get out. I would LOVE to see the diff...if any.
I'm building some clubs today as well. Been waiting 2 weeks for my ferrules to come in and they should finally arrive today. Gonna test out some Aerotech FC115 shafts.
It's 11.30pm, I've just got home after a 14 hour shift and this my friend is the most chilled out vid. Wish you had done all the clubs 😂 they look proper decent. 👍🏻
Great video James. I had no idea how clubs were put together so I learned loads. Just out of interest if you wanted to change the shafts later - how do you get the clubheads off again? Or is that not possible once they are on? Just interested to know.
Great video, love the content and giving us stuff that might inspire us to do something little different with our own equipment. Thanks James for keeping us interested over the last few weeks.
Very nice video James...You could use a wooden vice on you work bench that would help with the project...Now what did that cost you to build your own Mizuno irons and were can you buy the Mizuno head alone.....Thanks....Ali
Micheal Colwell Micheal , there is a lot more to it than that believe me , but for a home diy cut and stick project Jame’s did ok but as he says himself he does no profess to be a club builder.
My experience is that MP33 heads are quite light. They need some help to get to your swing weight, either down the hosel or with lead tape... worth checking..... now watched to the end and see you mentioned it 🤣
Not to shabby for a beginner, nice video i'd have chosen Golf Pride MCC+4 mid-size (personal pref.) Also, something that you might pass along; after apply epoxy install head then give it a tap on piece of wood on floor to seat the taper. (might just be my way, as i was a Machinist that worked with tapered parts) Good job & Video, but where's Laura ?
Not too bad James. Like most of us who do this......we all have "our way" of doing things. I will just shut up so that I don't get 106K people up my butt. Well done. Fun to watch. I am heading down (from Philly) to South New Jersey to play Golf with my older Brother tomorrow for my first round of the year. Looking forward to it. I am hoping to hit the Range today for some swings. I worked my first shift yesterday at the course where I work. We have been open for a couple of weeks, but I had other things that needed to be done. I was cleaning the carts at night and putting them in the barn to be charged and ready for today. Lots of disinfectant for sure. Starting times are 15 minutes apart. We had over 150 golfers yesterday. Not as many as normal, but a pretty good amount. No services available. One person per cart. It seemed to go better than I thought it would. I am also working tonight. We don't get paid much, but we get FREE Golf. Not too bad. Have a great day.
I think anyone who loves to tinker will love this video. Nice job mate.
Great video BUT == TIP if you dont have a wooden mallet get a small piece of wood and place it on the end you are banging with a metal hammer

Should have added tape to top of shaft to stop any s**t getting in & rattling around?
James can you do a video where you check the swing weights of these clubs? see how close you got
Swing weight should be checked and correct before the assembly of the clubs not after. Now when James had to correct the swing weight he had to do it by inserting lead powder mix with glue from butt end of the shaft to the club head.
