Yeah, very suspicious. But I know one who teaches a high-carb(fruit) diet... 80% carbs - Doug Graham's 80/10/10 diet. Its quite extreme (by today's lifestyles), but it's a good baseline. I've been eating a diet that goes half way, and it's been great for 25 years.
A lot of them do it because they can sell the food/snacks/supplements for profit- it’s lucrative and a constant money stream, because hey, you gotta eat.
It’s not that people are carb addicted. They are crap food addicted because it’s so palatable. When you combine the sugar salt, fat, carbs you get an irresistible combo. But what’s nice is if you eat less processed food for long enough, your tastebuds adapt. I actually crave vegetables now haha. Thanks Layne for all your content. You have helped me cut from 33 down to about 10 percent body fat. I am also no longer a Keto zealot. Hahah
It's not just your tastebuds, it's cravings. When I'm on low carb I quite even wanting sugary stuff, indeed the thought of it can be pretty eww. But after holidays and the like, eating that stuff? Then I get cravings for toast, crackers etc.
I can't eat stuff like molten gouda anymore cause I'm used to no fat cheese(german Harzerkaese, lactose and practically fat free) and the regular stuff is just too rich. never really liked junk food anyway though, even as a kid I couldn't eat some ice cream cause it was just too sweet
I followed ideas like low carb for years I'm 35 years old been out of shape since 29 I started eating carbs again and just lowering my calories while working out I was 310 pounds I'm now 250 pounds after roughly 5 months.
I did that , the diet got a lot issues , when u go take a poop u might not come out there alive , feeling powerless , constantly badmood , hard to sleep , craving some food u miss , but imma be fair , if u really wanna cut real quick , i lost +20 pounds in almost 3 month , but the harm is more than the benefit , so i suggest everyone to dont do it , i do it once and probably never will ever ever again
I had the same experience. Did very low carb and did keto. I should also mention that I am a diabetic. My A-1 C at diagnosis was 14! I started carefully re-introducing carbohydrates to my diet and paid close attention to when I was eating them. The changes in my physique were awesome… I finally started losing weight and even better… My A-1 C is now 4.5… and I eat oatmeal every morning post workout, fruit with my lunch and a bit of a carby vegetable (carrots, peas, corn, limas, etc) with dinner.
I did Keto for 7 months. Lost 41 pounds on two a day workouts. I did it because I didn’t think the 5-6 meals a day wouldn’t work anymore at age 61. Recently, I gained weight after gym closed for Covid. I met up with a ladies physique competitor who are carbs with every meal. I’m eating more carbs now than ever before and lost 30 pounds so far while retaining AND gaining muscle. I have CVD but my body fat has drastically dropped off. I was concerned about the whole “too much insulin release with frequent meals but I’m losing body fat so I’m hoping that won’t apply here. You’re videos are great man. Keep it up
I lost 65 pounds of weight in a year on low carb. Still on it and feel great. At the end of the day it’s calories in calories out no matter what yourchoice.
@@Dionysus_Athena I did it to lose the initial weight. Long term it is possible but just like vegans i will miss a lot of micronutrients. I have also built enough muscle mass now where i can maintain my body shape even if i eat in a surplus. I am at 175 from 240, i worked so hard at this so i plan to stay here if i can help it.
Personally, I lost over 20lbs (not much in general but I’m only 5’4”) so it makes a big difference! And I ate 50% carbs when I was cutting and I was fine ☺️ I understand everyone is different that’s why nutrition is so individual and suggestions are better than seeing things as black and white. Just my two cents!
Yes, the more I "do my own research", the more I realize that we're all completely different. My two kids are very different in their allergies and tastes. Personally, I've don't tolerate grains well, so low carb seemed ideal for me. I felt fine on keto, and lost the weight I wanted to, but my cholesterol shot up to an alarming extent. I added legumes for the protein and fiber, and did a lot more exercise, and now the lipid numbers are fine again. But beans, uh, have that digestive effect. Now I've dropped them again and am experimenting with just keto and exercise. We'll see. But since I don't tolerate dairy at all, it's hard to see where my calcium is gonna come from.
It’s mostly because highly palatable processed food is almost never satiating. So you go for more, and end up eating tons of calories and are still hungry
Agreed. His assertion that there is no psychophysical effect akin to addiction from the consumption of certain foods or the yearning for certain foods especially if they are unhealthy and lack* nutrition is patently false.
Lady says: "It takes over your life. You have sugar and food and these treats on your mind all they long…”. That’s pretty much the way I have felt every single time I tried to cut carbs out of my diet. It created o-b-s-e-s-s-i-o-n. I have waaaaay better control and completely stopped binging now that I understand I can manage my weight with a balanced and yes, flexible diet. Anyone serious about managing their weight should absolutely read your book (Fat loss forever). Best read and discovery for me this sh** year.
I mean, keto adaptation takes a while you know. As someone who actually took keto seriously, after 2 weeks on it, your hunger cravings literally cut half or more and this is widely talked everywhere in bodybuilding or other areas. its hard to even reach the calories needed on it. As soon as I take something with more carbs after keto I get very hungry a couple of hours later.
@@ThatFuckinGame Yep, same experience with me. If the whole world went keto I'd have no problem! The problem is it's easy to get pulled or pushed off the wagon, and then the cravings come back. That's what the couple are talking about regarding sugar addiction.
@@justgouds the point is there's no such thing as a carb addiction. Starchy carb sources are bland. Humans hedonify them with ingredients to consume more than could be achieved without doing so hence Oatmeal with them tasty toppings. Otherwise it's literally gruel.

I really dont understand the relevance people think their experiences have. If you lost 50 pounds on "Keto" you ate terribly before Keto, plain and simple. Keto is not the reason, eating better is.
I did lost 13 pounds in 3 weeks on keto, but I had to stop at the end of the 3rd week because I had some weird symptoms, like keto flu on steroids. Headaches, anxiety, wooziness, heart race, skipped heart beats, low energy, fatigue, almost passed out at the gym. Idk how it works for so many people, but for me it didn’t and I tried hard. 3 months later, I feel like I’m still cutting carbs and the wooziness comes back specially on 6-18 Intermittent fasting, but as I increase intake of carbs like natural starches, fruits and vegetables, the wooziness and sensation of dizziness are going away. I’m getting better each day. Amen! I truly wanted to make keto work for me, but I’m glad I’m out of it. People will say, well, if you still have some of the symptoms, maybe it’s something else… maybe, but the symptoms started after 3 weeks on keto. Lab work results were great 2 weeks before starting keto.
You did the right thing, same thing happened to me Was at the ER, Heart palpitations, losing electrolytes, cramps even though I was taking electrolytes I still was losing them. I added carbs back in, and I am back to normal. We really need to do what works for us instead of joining Diet tribes for some psychological comfort, makes no sense.
I fasted and cut carbs and lost a lot of weight but fasting too much ruined my metabolism because when I would re feed I binged and now I'm back up over than when I started. Cutting out whole food groups is not advisable I this day and age.

I lost 56lb on a high plant, high fat, loads of protein, mainly from seafood and eggs, ketogenic diet with both intermittent and longer fasts. I've kept it off for 3 years. I loved it, didn't have cravings, never got tired, didn't experience a plateau. I'm leaner and stronger at 62 than I was at 45. Anecdotal, yes. But, I'm a farm girl. Living off the garden, fish and eggs is just easy and enjoyable. So all of this depends on what you can enjoy enough to stick with. And what you believe! I've been a Thomas Delauer camp since I hit 196lbs and turned things around. Now I'm performing for hours a in size 6. I've always been energetic so loosing almost 60lbs turned me back into a dynamo. I'm ready for weight training so I'm happy for your science on protein synthesis and muscle building. Ready for a more mixed diet with healthy carbs.
@@Candyapplebone Yeah, it was anecdotally magical how easily I lost weight and how enjoyable it was. It's anecdotally more amazing that for the first time I'm maintaining.... easily and enjoyably. My Fitbit rewards show that I lost 25lb 15 times! And 10lbs 25 times. I anecdotally feel free and unconcerned about gaining weight. However, I'll stop thinking it would work for any other human body but mine...and yours.
@@Candyapplebone What is there to disagree with? He says isocaloric diets where protein is equated show no major differences in benefits between low carb & low fat. The calorie deficit = weight loss = health benefits. If low carb works for an individual, great. If low fat works for another? Great. I feel great, muscular, fit, energetic & satisfied on a higher carb diet. I found keto enervating, a pita & stomach-turning. It is what it is. Find what works, do it, let others find what works for them. 🤷♀️
If you aren't fat adapted, it is harder to go stretches of time without eating, so it's harder to sustain a calorie deficit. Yes calories and calories out, but for a lot of people reducing carbs can make it easier
Nothing to prove this, but I honestly think the weight loss can be summed up as decreased calories combined with increased TEF because people actually start eating high protein when they cut out carbs
I tried keto two years ago and lost a lot of weight but when I really looked at what I was doing- I was eating HALF of my BMR (thanks Thomas DeLauer for that “summer shred” lol 🙄) and as soon as I decided to eat normally again I of course gained back all the lost weight PLUS about 4 more pounds. I’ve been doing macros since last November with a coach and I’ve steadily lost weight and have kept it off. 🤯 I remember telling people “yeah keto works for me!” But what was causing my weight drop was the 700 calories I was eating as my daily intake. It’s so easy to be blinded by these magical diets.
I’m not “addicted” to anything, just like to eat, period. And you’re right that eating has a lot to do with emotional and social factors. I don’t reach for junk foods because I’m addicted to anything, it just makes me feel better when I’m depressed to eat whatever I want.
I'm no doctor etc, but I can tell you this: when I do a keto I get ripped without counting calories. In addition, I don't get gallbladder attacks, which is contrary to doctors who recommend a low fat diet.
Having (well controlled) type 2 diabetes and hearing over and over that keto or carnivore are how to reverse it, it was great to finally hear explained that losing the body fat is the real significant modulator in restoring insulin sensitivity. That was always my guess, but it's funny to finally hear someone rooted in actual science say it very plainly.
I’m guilty of saying “you just don’t think about food while on low carb / keto” when I was on Keto and it’s not true - at least for me. Now, I was less hungry, most of the time, but I thought about food all the time and what I was going to eat all the time. The truth is it doesn’t matter what diet your on, if your trying to lose weight you’re going to think about food a lot, way more than if you weren’t. So anyone telling you “you’ll think less about food on this diet” isn’t saying anything valuable because if your trying to lose weight which let’s be honest, if your watching this kind of content you’re most likely trying to lose weight. And that’s why your thinking of food all the time. Which is fine, you’re trying to make a change. The key is finding the right diet or lifestyle that gets you to your ideal weigh SO THAT you spend less time thinking about food. You could also just really love food, but everything in moderation, it shouldn’t be an obsession unless your a chef or a dietician or do something for a living where food is the central component.
that ankle sprain thing due to carbs is just going too far....as a physical therapist chronic repition of ankle sprain is largley due to the proprioceptive nerve endings in your ankle being damaged the first ankle sprain...and being able to rehab it properly and re-learning the optimal preventive gait pattern. has nothing to do with systemic inflammation
low carb for almost 2 years, unfortunately lost protein out of sight... so kinda of lost lean body mas too... But felt some improvements regarding inflamation and pain during menses. Ldl try to low by using moslt olive oil than sour creme... Love animal protein tho so I eat eggs, cheese, meat,,, Test my ketones with breath tester from Biosense... So I totally appreciate the videos you put out. And I’ve commented on a few of your comments with the same subject. Processed Carbs like bread and many others for me are what I classify as addictive. Once I start it’s I eat more. What’s worse is once I start it’s ok to eat worse carbs like cookies, cakes, etc. so I think for me clean keto works because I remove this out of the equation even though I know it’s ultimately about the calories. It doesn’t sound you can relate to this and no judgment at all but for me this is just as real as all your science based findings. I think it’s important what you’re saying but I would like to see you leave a little room in your truth telling to allow for this.
I gained 5 pound in 3 months on a keto diet I lost 20 pound on a high protein diet calorie deficit diet. I battle with inflammation because I keep going back to eating crappy. I hate blaming carbs for my issues when it’s not the cause, when the cause is just eating crappy. 😮
You gained weight on keto because you ate too many calories. That’s the number one reason why people “stall” on keto. They’ve been told calories don’t matter. They do and always will no matter what diet you choose. I choose keto just because of how I feel on it. But I do clean keto. Whole Foods. Dirty keto terrible for you.
@@Shanelame3452exactly lol. The reason Keto works, is because it limits your choices for garbage food. Personally I do high protein, mid fat, low carb. It works best for me. Sometimes I struggle to get above 2K Calories.
So glad your out there speaking the truth. I’m a type 1 diabetic and it pisses me off with these claims about insulin and carbs. When I was training individuals I made it a point to try Keto, low carb and high carb. Carnivore is just plain ridiculous so that I wasn’t even going to give a go. With blood work done on Keto cholesterol was bad, test levels were low, sugars ran stable but were always higher then normal because you still produce glucose and I was more insulin resistant because every time I would adjust it was harder to bring the sugars down. Low carb I had no energy and it slowed me down in the gym, with muscle gain and weight loss along with my metabolism. Carb cycling was ok but hard to keep up with. High carb, low fat and body weight in protein gave me energy, more fat burning/storage, better insulin sensitivity, good test levels and a great metabolic boost especially after and during training. But like you said... I guess if I want to grow my channel I have to jump on the band wagon, spout ridiculous crap and say trust me guys. Like you I’m just kidding. Great channel. ✊
I’ve learned so much more information that’s been easy to understand and follow over the last 5 years than I have in any other textbook or college course in relation to nutrition or training.
KETO is a B.S. - 100% confirmed. I saw my veins and lost body fat on 0,4g/lb fat intake and 1g/lb protein. When on KETO I was notorious hungry and lost muscle fullness.
I have recently cut out most of the process carbs I used to eat and no longer have sugar cravings. As a matter of fact sugery foods are no longer even appealing to me. So you say there are no scientific studies indicating the carbs are addicting. I call BS on that. I have seen this change with in cravings with not only me but many others too. Also because of such cravings running a caloric deficit on a high carb diet is very difficult. it is very easy on low carb higher fat diet. This couple is right on.
Ok, for starters: 1. Ice-cream isn't so much a carb as it is a FAT. 2. No such thing as addiction to carbs. (edit: as Layne points out). It's like saying you're addicted to food.

Most of the "high carb" foods the low carb zealots demonize are HIGH FAT.... 1 g fat has 9 calories It all goes back to calorie deficit... Low carb logic: "I stopped eating two slices of pepperoni pizza and a coke for lunch, and had a garden salad with chicken breast instead, and lost 30 lbs! Carbs are the enemy!"
I’m a Type 1.5 diabetic. I got off all medications (except thyroid), and lost 80lbs following keto. With that being said, I understand I could have lost the weight using another method as well. The reason I chose that route was because of inflammation and that my blood sugars do not respond well to grains, flours, breads, and pastas.... all the things I used to love so much. Oddly, a bagel sends me into a dangerous zone quite quickly but I might be ok with a small candy bar... which is odd, right? But it was the right choice for me. I have now shifted to a little lower fat regimen and higher carb than “keto”. I also started using Carbon almost two weeks ago and love it. I will have more blood work in April and it will be interesting to see how I have adapted/responded to this change. Love all the things I’m learning from Holly and Layne. 🥰
Ditto! Diagnosed LADA 1.5 years ago at 54! I was first misdiagnosed Type2 so I went keto per Dr. Fung method and now I am back to a regular normal diet. Keto was boring but I thought it was saving my life. Other than Layne I also follow Matt Vande Vegte who also is a Type 1 Diabetic, health coach and fitness guy. I think you have to cut what you overeat, if you overeat fat, like fatty meats,, lots of oil even EVOO, lots of nuts: cut fat. HOWEVER if you overeat carbs, like sugary drinks, lots of bread and flour derived foods, and fruit ( I personally invite you Layne to south america to see how ppl overeat fruit as juice or as their only source of food whole day, like eating 5 big bananas with JAM as breakfast plus a jar of orange juice ) then logic says cut down some carbs. End it here
Addiction: “is when you have a strong physical or psychological need or urge to do something or use something.” I can equate the similarities to giving up desserts with giving up smoking. Both were very addictive for me.
From my own experience only, all "diets" have worked. Consistency, discipline and a calorie deficit always work, in regards to fat and carb ratios. I'd say the only benefit of Keto really would the mental acuity - my brain does seem to work better on ketones but you have to take the anaerobic hit. There are definite performance drops on keto that takes a long time to return vs a balanced diet. Depends on your goals.
About 1st part, it's gonna be scientifically proven sooner or later cause 100% of people I know on keto, including myself (when I do keto) lose cravings towards carbs and have reduced apetite. I generally do not like the approach that if something is not proven yet we should dismiss it completely.
If you’ve ever been addicted to coke or crack, you’ll know that sugar addiction is real…….that feeling when you need sugar is as strong as when you need a line…..it’s exactly the same feeling
It’s not sugar people are addicted to but ultra-processed junk food that just happen to contain sugar along with a load of other unhealthy ingredients. If you were truly addicted to just sugar, you would stuff your face with spoonfuls of caster sugar - nobody does that! It’s the processed foods with added sugar, refined carbs, bad fats and synthetic ingredients you’re addicted to!
perhaps there's something more to this like dopamine deficiency studies show that people with adhd are more likely to eat more sweets because of the dopamine response they get from it (not the other way around, i.e., sugar doesn't cause adhd)
There’s no carb addiction, why you think a person becomes 500 pounds. It’s not because of being addicted to meat.. I am a prime example of that..Carb addiction is real..
I don't think it's entirely fair to dismiss anecdotal evidence simply because of a lack of enough scientific controlled studies. I can personally vouch for a complete change in my hunger and cravings as a result of going low carb/keto. I've also lost 54 pounds in 3 months (though I believe the fasting and exercise is the primary reason for the weight loss). Going low-carb makes the fasting a lot easier though.
Well said! He seems to think that if there are a lack of studies then it can't be so lol! Maybe there is a lack of funding due to the whole keto thing being rather new to the masses.
Thats great. You found what allowed you to stay in calorie deficit for a long time and lost the weight. Not everyone can cut carbs, and Layne is saying that you do not need these extreme modifications to lose weight. You can enjoy all the macronutrients and still lose weight because a calorie deficit is all that matters at then end of the day. You also have to consider sustainability. I know two people (since we are talking anecdotes here...) that had great success on keto and looked like different people when they lost weight, but gained it all back because their lifestyle involved parties with cake, beer, pizza, etc.
I don't think dismissing anecdote is great, but I also don't believe in magnifying it either. I can give my own anecdotal information, which is a direct contrast with Keto (Such as being only hungry 1 - 2 times a day despite a huge bulk of my food being carbohydrate, and being generally lower in fat, and losing weight easier on low fat / putting on weight easier on high fat) but to he honest what works for me may not work for someone else, and even if it does it may not be the easiest way. This is why anecdotal evidence should always remain framed in the mindset of "This is what worked for me" not me telling you "Bro, just cut fat.....youll he lesss hungry, and youll get more shredded etc" because my wife is the opposite. She likes high fat and seems to have an easier time going slightly lower carb, and higher fat than me etc etc. She also gets hungrier more frequently than I do, but I get really quick, as to where I can just eat....almost whatever and not get "Full". Even dark meat chicken, whole eggs, and steak. Again, I agree that anecdotal evidence shouldn't be dismissed, but it also shouldnt be touted as 100% gospel fact either, and Ive watched vids by 2 fit docs before, and they definitly frame what they are saying as fact etc.
Any psychologist can probably fill you in on why sugar is addictive. It isnt the sugar, it is the addict. People with certain problems like ADHD tend to regulate their issues with stimulants. Any substance that can give a high is "addictive" to them. Sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, spicy food, fat, endorphin. Alternative sweeteners without caffeine is a taste without the stimulant which is why it can be used to stop a "sugar addiction", like an alcoholic free beer or wine can help overcome alcoholism.
Agree with everything Layne is saying except his dismissal of Carb addiction, I'm not sure carb addiction is the right term be we now know that just about anything that gives you a dopamine kick, from drugs, to likes on your social media, to high and constant amounts of sugar can be addictive. Overstimulation of dopamine in any area can lead to D2 receptors in the brain to downregulate requiring bigger and more consistent hits of dopamine all while increasing DeltaFosB which reinforces the neurological pathways that motivate you to eat sugar. (Addiction and reward center of the brain 101) Genetics play a massive role though, from how many D2 receptors you have to begin with, to the speed at which they downregulate, there is a ton of research on this, It's definitely a thing. I'm not sure it's a reason to quit carbs though, more a reason to eat less concentrated amounts of sugar, but if you're eating 5 chocolate bars and drink 2l of soda per day you have bigger problems.
I thought I liked Layne's channel but this video put me off totally! I agree more with the doctors in the video tbh! Not all people are the same and many overweight people are insulin resistant and would therefore benefit from keto! There is massive amounts of evidence that keto is effective for diabetes reversal and weight loss!
Magnitude my man. Magnitude. Foods aren't drugs. The magnitudes on the reward system aren't comparable. Any reward seeking behaviour increases dopamine. Nobody ever became addicted to water as a result of its manifested dopamine spike. Plain rice plain potatoes plain Oatmeal would induce lower magnitude on the reward system than a Krispy creme donut which is 40% carb. It ain't the carb that amplifies the magnitude on the reward system. Specifically reducing the carb content does by adding fat and other ingredients. Ppl saying carbs are addictive are plain wrong. When I participated in endurance sports carbs were essential and were as much as 70-80% of my diet. I was training 20-25 hrs a week for triathlon and distance biking events. I stopped for a couple of years and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Eating keto brought my blood sugar down and got me under control. But l could not sustain that and I was very disappointed with my athletic performance. Low carb is where I have been for a while now. What does that look like??? 1. I do not eat anything with added sugar. 2. I stay away from most grains and especially white breads. 3. I drink almost exclusively water and coffee. I do occasionally drink wine, lite beer, or mixed drinks (no juices, think a dirty vodka martini or an old fashioned (I know there is sugar in an old fashioned but not like in a juice containing cocktail and I will only drink 1). I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, etc. I do not eat sweet desserts except on rare occasions. Do I ever violate these rules - yes. Why, because if I don’t I won’t live by them. If I go out with my family to a nice restaurant, I may eat some Tiramisu and I will feel the sugar high in ways only a diabetic can understand. Ands then, my desire for the dessert is quenched, and my mind/body remembers what too much sugar feels like. Makes it easier to stay low carb. This has absolutely nothing to do with managing my weight. I have found that I can eat as many calories as a powerweight lifter as I did as an endurance athlete. I do weigh more, but I am also a lot more muscular.

I’ve used both low carb and low fat and lost weight on both, but generally feel worse and more tired on low carb, I also tend to lose more muscle but I’m sure sone of that is glycogen loss.
How miserable do you want to be on your diet? Flexible dieting and tracking macros is what I needed to enjoy my relationship with food. Portion control and you can eat about anything with no guilt trip. This is the benefit of Carbon app. I can see what my stats are for the day and modify foods as needed.

I’ve successfully cut for 2 bikini competitions eating oats, white rice, and bread during my prep. Certain foods were adjusted the closer to my shows but the thing that remained constant was my overall caloric deficit. I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to anything, especially when it comes to diet and training.
Keep in mind that humans historically fermented most sugary food so in effect were low carb. Sourdough bread, kefir, cheese, fermented vegetables and fermented fruit (wine, vinegar)
I’m 65 , WFPB, cross fit / run 10/day and I’m addicted to specific carbs .. I.e : FRESH BREAD … it’s my Achilles heel … I did an RCT .. 4 days ago in Mexico I bought 2 baguettes from the local store … when I woke up 2 days later they were both gone … (I lost 70lb by basically banning bread from the house … obviously I would also load the bread with cheese ….)
Layne, osteoarthritis (wear and tear) is not an inflammatory arthritis. On the other hand, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Septic Arthritis, and Gout will cause inflammation and likely jack up your CRP.
I did strict low carb for over 2 yrs. I was just as hungry as I was on a normal diet. I found it easier to lose weight just cause I can eat more times a day and stay within calories. But I’m not dumb. I know it’s about calories in and out.

I tried a lot of diets, and i discovered keto 8 years ago, never went back. I lost 20 pounds and maintained it ever since. I know this is anecdotal, but it worked best fore me. And in terms of calorie for calorie replacement comparison, its hard for me to comprehend how foods with no insulin response are not going to have a significant effect on weight loss compared to the ones that do.
Just because it`s hard for you to comprehend something, doesn`` make it not true. As Layne said; there are numerous of studies comparing keto and high carb diet while controlling for calories & protein. The results are pretty much the same. I don`t get how that`s difficult to understand.

Keto diets have had the most weight loss than any other diet in the short term, long term is a failure because of compliance. this gives credence to my end statement. A diet based on high fat could potentially prime the body to burn fat as fuel, why would a high carb diet burn any fat unless it exhausted all carbohydrates first? why would it when constantly being replenished by carbs? carbs coming with a load of insulin that signals your body to grow. i am not refuting the information, i am asking for an explanation- where as you only provided a low energy insult on my intelligence without any rebuttal
@@ericwrite8419 thats because of water loss in the short term. Using the term "weight loss" means nothing as there a many ways to lose weight. The part where you mention how fat will not be burnt until all carbohydrates are burnt is not biochemically accurate. A calorie deficit will generally always create fat loss even if your diet was 100% carbohydrates (unless for example a thyroid issue was present). I tried a keto diet for a personal anecdotal experiment and I found I put on more body fat and had less energy (after the adrenaline response wore off as cortisol increases on a keto diet and is responsible for converting noradrenaline into adrenaline) and was always hungry. I lift weights and lost muscle because alot of the conversion to glycogen came for a catabolic response of my muscles.
I did carnivore for a while, literally one rib-eye each night. Felt great, never hungry, didn't even think of food. Now back on a ' normal' diet , obsessed with food again , want to eat every 2 hours, constantly craving catbs..anecdotal evidence doesn't make it false.

Yeah, very suspicious. But I know one who teaches a high-carb(fruit) diet... 80% carbs - Doug Graham's 80/10/10 diet. Its quite extreme (by today's lifestyles), but it's a good baseline. I've been eating a diet that goes half way, and it's been great for 25 years.

It’s not that people are carb addicted. They are crap food addicted because it’s so palatable. When you combine the sugar salt, fat, carbs you get an irresistible combo. But what’s nice is if you eat less processed food for long enough, your tastebuds adapt. I actually crave vegetables now haha.

It's not just your tastebuds, it's cravings. When I'm on low carb I quite even wanting sugary stuff, indeed the thought of it can be pretty eww. But after holidays and the like, eating that stuff? Then I get cravings for toast, crackers etc.
I can't eat stuff like molten gouda anymore cause I'm used to no fat cheese(german Harzerkaese, lactose and practically fat free) and the regular stuff is just too rich. never really liked junk food anyway though, even as a kid I couldn't eat some ice cream cause it was just too sweet

I had the same experience. Did very low carb and did keto. I should also mention that I am a diabetic. My A-1 C at diagnosis was 14!
I started carefully re-introducing carbohydrates to my diet and paid close attention to when I was eating them. The changes in my physique were awesome… I finally started losing weight and even better… My A-1 C is now 4.5… and I eat oatmeal every morning post workout, fruit with my lunch and a bit of a carby vegetable (carrots, peas, corn, limas, etc) with dinner.
I did Keto for 7 months. Lost 41 pounds on two a day workouts. I did it because I didn’t think the 5-6 meals a day wouldn’t work anymore at age 61. Recently, I gained weight after gym closed for Covid. I met up with a ladies physique competitor who are carbs with every meal. I’m eating more carbs now than ever before and lost 30 pounds so far while retaining AND gaining muscle. I have CVD but my body fat has drastically dropped off. I was concerned about the whole “too much insulin release with frequent meals but I’m losing body fat so I’m hoping that won’t apply here. You’re videos are great man. Keep it up

I lost 65 pounds of weight in a year on low carb. Still on it and feel great. At the end of the day it’s calories in calories out no matter what yourchoice.
You can lose weight in a surplus also, besides the way you’re doing it is proven to be less likely to keep it off.
@@Dionysus_Athena I did it to lose the initial weight. Long term it is possible but just like vegans i will miss a lot of micronutrients. I have also built enough muscle mass now where i can maintain my body shape even if i eat in a surplus. I am at 175 from 240, i worked so hard at this so i plan to stay here if i can help it.

Personally, I lost over 20lbs (not much in general but I’m only 5’4”) so it makes a big difference! And I ate 50% carbs when I was cutting and I was fine ☺️ I understand everyone is different that’s why nutrition is so individual and suggestions are better than seeing things as black and white. Just my two cents!

Yes, the more I "do my own research", the more I realize that we're all completely different. My two kids are very different in their allergies and tastes.
Personally, I've don't tolerate grains well, so low carb seemed ideal for me. I felt fine on keto, and lost the weight I wanted to, but my cholesterol shot up to an alarming extent. I added legumes for the protein and fiber, and did a lot more exercise, and now the lipid numbers are fine again. But beans, uh, have that digestive effect. Now I've dropped them again and am experimenting with just keto and exercise. We'll see. But since I don't tolerate dairy at all, it's hard to see where my calcium is gonna come from.

That’s pretty much the way I have felt every single time I tried to cut carbs out of my diet. It created o-b-s-e-s-s-i-o-n. I have waaaaay better control and completely stopped binging now that I understand I can manage my weight with a balanced and yes, flexible diet. Anyone serious about managing their weight should absolutely read your book (Fat loss forever). Best read and discovery for me this sh** year.
I mean, keto adaptation takes a while you know. As someone who actually took keto seriously, after 2 weeks on it, your hunger cravings literally cut half or more and this is widely talked everywhere in bodybuilding or other areas. its hard to even reach the calories needed on it.
As soon as I take something with more carbs after keto I get very hungry a couple of hours later.

I did lost 13 pounds in 3 weeks on keto, but I had to stop at the end of the 3rd week because I had some weird symptoms, like keto flu on steroids. Headaches, anxiety, wooziness, heart race, skipped heart beats, low energy, fatigue, almost passed out at the gym. Idk how it works for so many people, but for me it didn’t and I tried hard. 3 months later, I feel like I’m still cutting carbs and the wooziness comes back specially on 6-18 Intermittent fasting, but as I increase intake of carbs like natural starches, fruits and vegetables, the wooziness and sensation of dizziness are going away. I’m getting better each day. Amen! I truly wanted to make keto work for me, but I’m glad I’m out of it. People will say, well, if you still have some of the symptoms, maybe it’s something else… maybe, but the symptoms started after 3 weeks on keto. Lab work results were great 2 weeks before starting keto.

Was at the ER, Heart palpitations, losing electrolytes, cramps even though I was taking electrolytes I still was losing them.
I added carbs back in, and I am back to normal.
We really need to do what works for us instead of joining Diet tribes for some psychological comfort, makes no sense.
I fasted and cut carbs and lost a lot of weight but fasting too much ruined my metabolism because when I would re feed I binged and now I'm back up over than when I started.
Cutting out whole food groups is not advisable I this day and age.

I lost 56lb on a high plant, high fat, loads of protein, mainly from seafood and eggs, ketogenic diet with both intermittent and longer fasts. I've kept it off for 3 years.
I loved it, didn't have cravings, never got tired, didn't experience a plateau. I'm leaner and stronger at 62 than I was at 45. Anecdotal, yes. But, I'm a farm girl. Living off the garden, fish and eggs is just easy and enjoyable.
So all of this depends on what you can enjoy enough to stick with. And what you believe! I've been a Thomas Delauer camp since I hit 196lbs and turned things around. Now I'm performing for hours a in size 6. I've always been energetic so loosing almost 60lbs turned me back into a dynamo.
I'm ready for weight training so I'm happy for your science on protein synthesis and muscle building. Ready for a more mixed diet with healthy carbs.

My Fitbit rewards show that I lost 25lb 15 times! And 10lbs 25 times. I anecdotally feel free and unconcerned about gaining weight. However, I'll stop thinking it would work for any other human body but mine...and yours.

I feel great, muscular, fit, energetic & satisfied on a higher carb diet. I found keto enervating, a pita & stomach-turning. It is what it is. Find what works, do it, let others find what works for them. 🤷♀️
If you aren't fat adapted, it is harder to go stretches of time without eating, so it's harder to sustain a calorie deficit. Yes calories and calories out, but for a lot of people reducing carbs can make it easier
Nothing to prove this, but I honestly think the weight loss can be summed up as decreased calories combined with increased TEF because people actually start eating high protein when they cut out carbs
I tried keto two years ago and lost a lot of weight but when I really looked at what I was doing- I was eating HALF of my BMR (thanks Thomas DeLauer for that “summer shred” lol 🙄) and as soon as I decided to eat normally again I of course gained back all the lost weight PLUS about 4 more pounds. I’ve been doing macros since last November with a coach and I’ve steadily lost weight and have kept it off. 🤯 I remember telling people “yeah keto works for me!” But what was causing my weight drop was the 700 calories I was eating as my daily intake. It’s so easy to be blinded by these magical diets.
I’m not “addicted” to anything, just like to eat, period. And you’re right that eating has a lot to do with emotional and social factors. I don’t reach for junk foods because I’m addicted to anything, it just makes me feel better when I’m depressed to eat whatever I want.
I'm no doctor etc, but I can tell you this: when I do a keto I get ripped without counting calories. In addition, I don't get gallbladder attacks, which is contrary to doctors who recommend a low fat diet.

Having (well controlled) type 2 diabetes and hearing over and over that keto or carnivore are how to reverse it, it was great to finally hear explained that losing the body fat is the real significant modulator in restoring insulin sensitivity. That was always my guess, but it's funny to finally hear someone rooted in actual science say it very plainly.
I’m guilty of saying “you just don’t think about food while on low carb / keto” when I was on Keto and it’s not true - at least for me. Now, I was less hungry, most of the time, but I thought about food all the time and what I was going to eat all the time. The truth is it doesn’t matter what diet your on, if your trying to lose weight you’re going to think about food a lot, way more than if you weren’t.
So anyone telling you “you’ll think less about food on this diet” isn’t saying anything valuable because if your trying to lose weight which let’s be honest, if your watching this kind of content you’re most likely trying to lose weight. And that’s why your thinking of food all the time. Which is fine, you’re trying to make a change. The key is finding the right diet or lifestyle that gets you to your ideal weigh SO THAT you spend less time thinking about food.
You could also just really love food, but everything in moderation, it shouldn’t be an obsession unless your a chef or a dietician or do something for a living where food is the central component.
Its probably sad but What The Fitness is one of the main reasons I look forward to Fridays now 😂

that ankle sprain thing due to carbs is just going too far....as a physical therapist chronic repition of ankle sprain is largley due to the proprioceptive nerve endings in your ankle being damaged the first ankle sprain...and being able to rehab it properly and re-learning the optimal preventive gait pattern.

So I totally appreciate the videos you put out. And I’ve commented on a few of your comments with the same subject. Processed Carbs like bread and many others for me are what I classify as addictive. Once I start it’s I eat more. What’s worse is once I start it’s ok to eat worse carbs like cookies, cakes, etc. so I think for me clean keto works because I remove this out of the equation even though I know it’s ultimately about the calories. It doesn’t sound you can relate to this and no judgment at all but for me this is just as real as all your science based findings. I think it’s important what you’re saying but I would like to see you leave a little room in your truth telling to allow for this.

I gained 5 pound in 3 months on a keto diet I lost 20 pound on a high protein diet calorie deficit diet. I battle with inflammation because I keep going back to eating crappy. I hate blaming carbs for my issues when it’s not the cause, when the cause is just eating crappy. 😮
You gained weight on keto because you ate too many calories. That’s the number one reason why people “stall” on keto. They’ve been told calories don’t matter. They do and always will no matter what diet you choose. I choose keto just because of how I feel on it. But I do clean keto. Whole Foods. Dirty keto terrible for you.

So glad your out there speaking the truth. I’m a type 1 diabetic and it pisses me off with these claims about insulin and carbs. When I was training individuals I made it a point to try Keto, low carb and high carb. Carnivore is just plain ridiculous so that I wasn’t even going to give a go. With blood work done on Keto cholesterol was bad, test levels were low, sugars ran stable but were always higher then normal because you still produce glucose and I was more insulin resistant because every time I would adjust it was harder to bring the sugars down. Low carb I had no energy and it slowed me down in the gym, with muscle gain and weight loss along with my metabolism. Carb cycling was ok but hard to keep up with. High carb, low fat and body weight in protein gave me energy, more fat burning/storage, better insulin sensitivity, good test levels and a great metabolic boost especially after and during training. But like you said... I guess if I want to grow my channel I have to jump on the band wagon, spout ridiculous crap and say trust me guys. Like you I’m just kidding. Great channel. ✊

KETO is a B.S. - 100% confirmed. I saw my veins and lost body fat on 0,4g/lb fat intake and 1g/lb protein. When on KETO I was notorious hungry and lost muscle fullness.

I have recently cut out most of the process carbs I used to eat and no longer have sugar cravings. As a matter of fact sugery foods are no longer even appealing to me. So you say there are no scientific studies indicating the carbs are addicting. I call BS on that. I have seen this change with in cravings with not only me but many others too. Also because of such cravings running a caloric deficit on a high carb diet is very difficult. it is very easy on low carb higher fat diet. This couple is right on.

I’m a Type 1.5 diabetic. I got off all medications (except thyroid), and lost 80lbs following keto. With that being said, I understand I could have lost the weight using another method as well. The reason I chose that route was because of inflammation and that my blood sugars do not respond well to grains, flours, breads, and pastas.... all the things I used to love so much. Oddly, a bagel sends me into a dangerous zone quite quickly but I might be ok with a small candy bar... which is odd, right? But it was the right choice for me.
I have now shifted to a little lower fat regimen and higher carb than “keto”. I also started using Carbon almost two weeks ago and love it. I will have more blood work in April and it will be interesting to see how I have adapted/responded to this change.

Ditto! Diagnosed LADA 1.5 years ago at 54! I was first misdiagnosed Type2 so I went keto per Dr. Fung method and now I am back to a regular normal diet. Keto was boring but I thought it was saving my life. Other than Layne I also follow Matt Vande Vegte who also is a Type 1 Diabetic, health coach and fitness guy. He’s the reason I gave up keto and I’m much happier.

I think you have to cut what you overeat, if you overeat fat, like fatty meats,, lots of oil even EVOO, lots of nuts: cut fat. HOWEVER if you overeat carbs, like sugary drinks, lots of bread and flour derived foods, and fruit ( I personally invite you Layne to south america to see how ppl overeat fruit as juice or as their only source of food whole day, like eating 5 big bananas with JAM as breakfast plus a jar of orange juice ) then logic says cut down some carbs. Addiction: “is when you have a strong physical or psychological need or urge to do something or use something.” I can equate the similarities to giving up desserts with giving up smoking. Both were very addictive for me.
From my own experience only, all "diets" have worked. Consistency, discipline and a calorie deficit always work, in regards to fat and carb ratios.
I'd say the only benefit of Keto really would the mental acuity - my brain does seem to work better on ketones but you have to take the anaerobic hit. There are definite performance drops on keto that takes a long time to return vs a balanced diet.

About 1st part, it's gonna be scientifically proven sooner or later cause 100% of people I know on keto, including myself (when I do keto) lose cravings towards carbs and have reduced apetite. I generally do not like the approach that if something is not proven yet we should dismiss it completely.

It’s not sugar people are addicted to but ultra-processed junk food that just happen to contain sugar along with a load of other unhealthy ingredients. If you were truly addicted to just sugar, you would stuff your face with spoonfuls of caster sugar - nobody does that! It’s the processed foods with added sugar, refined carbs, bad fats and synthetic ingredients you’re addicted to!

studies show that people with adhd are more likely to eat more sweets because of the dopamine response they get from it (not the other way around, i.e., sugar doesn't cause adhd)

I don't think it's entirely fair to dismiss anecdotal evidence simply because of a lack of enough scientific controlled studies. I can personally vouch for a complete change in my hunger and cravings as a result of going low carb/keto. I've also lost 54 pounds in 3 months (though I believe the fasting and exercise is the primary reason for the weight loss). Going low-carb makes the fasting a lot easier though.
Well said! He seems to think that if there are a lack of studies then it can't be so lol! Maybe there is a lack of funding due to the whole keto thing being rather new to the masses.
Thats great. You found what allowed you to stay in calorie deficit for a long time and lost the weight.
Not everyone can cut carbs, and Layne is saying that you do not need these extreme modifications to lose weight.
You can enjoy all the macronutrients and still lose weight because a calorie deficit is all that matters at then end of the day.
You also have to consider sustainability. I know two people (since we are talking anecdotes here...) that had great success on keto and looked like different people when they lost weight, but gained it all back because their lifestyle involved parties with cake, beer, pizza, etc.
I don't think dismissing anecdote is great, but I also don't believe in magnifying it either. I can give my own anecdotal information, which is a direct contrast with Keto (Such as being only hungry 1 - 2 times a day despite a huge bulk of my food being carbohydrate, and being generally lower in fat, and losing weight easier on low fat / putting on weight easier on high fat) but to he honest what works for me may not work for someone else, and even if it does it may not be the easiest way. This is why anecdotal evidence should always remain framed in the mindset of "This is what worked for me" not me telling you "Bro, just cut fat.....youll he lesss hungry, and youll get more shredded etc" because my wife is the opposite. She likes high fat and seems to have an easier time going slightly lower carb, and higher fat than me etc etc. She also gets hungrier more frequently than I do, but I get really quick, as to where I can just eat....almost whatever and not get "Full". Even dark meat chicken, whole eggs, and steak.
Again, I agree that anecdotal evidence shouldn't be dismissed, but it also shouldnt be touted as 100% gospel fact either, and Ive watched vids by 2 fit docs before, and they definitly frame what they are saying as fact etc.

Any psychologist can probably fill you in on why sugar is addictive. It isnt the sugar, it is the addict. People with certain problems like ADHD tend to regulate their issues with stimulants. Any substance that can give a high is "addictive" to them. Sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, spicy food, fat, endorphin. Alternative sweeteners without caffeine is a taste without the stimulant which is why it can be used to stop a "sugar addiction", like an alcoholic free beer or wine can help overcome alcoholism.
Agree with everything Layne is saying except his dismissal of Carb addiction, I'm not sure carb addiction is the right term be we now know that just about anything that gives you a dopamine kick, from drugs, to likes on your social media, to high and constant amounts of sugar can be addictive.
Overstimulation of dopamine in any area can lead to D2 receptors in the brain to downregulate requiring bigger and more consistent hits of dopamine all while increasing DeltaFosB which reinforces the neurological pathways that motivate you to eat sugar. (Addiction and reward center of the brain 101)
Genetics play a massive role though, from how many D2 receptors you have to begin with, to the speed at which they downregulate, there is a ton of research on this, It's definitely a thing.
I'm not sure it's a reason to quit carbs though, more a reason to eat less concentrated amounts of sugar, but if you're eating 5 chocolate bars and drink 2l of soda per day you have bigger problems.

Magnitude my man. Magnitude. Foods aren't drugs. The magnitudes on the reward system aren't comparable. Any reward seeking behaviour increases dopamine. Nobody ever became addicted to water as a result of its manifested dopamine spike. Plain rice plain potatoes plain Oatmeal would induce lower magnitude on the reward system than a Krispy creme donut which is 40% carb. It ain't the carb that amplifies the magnitude on the reward system. Specifically reducing the carb content does by adding fat and other ingredients. Ppl saying carbs are addictive are plain wrong. When I participated in endurance sports carbs were essential and were as much as 70-80% of my diet. I was training 20-25 hrs a week for triathlon and distance biking events. I stopped for a couple of years and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Eating keto brought my blood sugar down and got me under control. But l could not sustain that and I was very disappointed with my athletic performance. Low carb is where I have been for a while now. What does that look like??? 1. I do not eat anything with added sugar. 2. I stay away from most grains and especially white breads. 3. I drink almost exclusively water and coffee. I do occasionally drink wine, lite beer, or mixed drinks (no juices, think a dirty vodka martini or an old fashioned (I know there is sugar in an old fashioned but not like in a juice containing cocktail and I will only drink 1). I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, etc. I do not eat sweet desserts except on rare occasions. Do I ever violate these rules - yes. Why, because if I don’t I won’t live by them. If I go out with my family to a nice restaurant, I may eat some Tiramisu and I will feel the sugar high in ways only a diabetic can understand. Ands then, my desire for the dessert is quenched, and my mind/body remembers what too much sugar feels like. Makes it easier to stay low carb. This has absolutely nothing to do with managing my weight. I have found that I can eat as many calories as a powerweight lifter as I did as an endurance athlete. I do weigh more, but I am also a lot more muscular.

I’ve used both low carb and low fat and lost weight on both, but generally feel worse and more tired on low carb, I also tend to lose more muscle but I’m sure sone of that is glycogen loss.
How miserable do you want to be on your diet? Flexible dieting and tracking macros is what I needed to enjoy my relationship with food. Portion control and you can eat about anything with no guilt trip. This is the benefit of Carbon app. I can see what my stats are for the day and modify foods as needed.

I’ve successfully cut for 2 bikini competitions eating oats, white rice, and bread during my prep. Certain foods were adjusted the closer to my shows but the thing that remained constant was my overall caloric deficit.
I do not believe in a one size fits all approach to anything, especially when it comes to diet and training.
Keep in mind that humans historically fermented most sugary food so in effect were low carb. Sourdough bread, kefir, cheese, fermented vegetables and fermented fruit (wine, vinegar)
I’m 65 , WFPB, cross fit / run 10/day and I’m addicted to specific carbs .. I.e : FRESH BREAD … it’s my Achilles heel … I did an RCT .. 4 days ago in Mexico I bought 2 baguettes from the local store … when I woke up 2 days later they were both gone … (I lost 70lb by basically banning bread from the house … obviously I would also load the bread with cheese ….)
Layne, osteoarthritis (wear and tear) is not an inflammatory arthritis. On the other hand, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Septic Arthritis, and Gout will cause inflammation and likely jack up your CRP.

I did strict low carb for over 2 yrs. I was just as hungry as I was on a normal diet. I found it easier to lose weight just cause I can eat more times a day and stay within calories. But I’m not dumb. I know it’s about calories in and out.
Yeah nice try lmao, a keto meal its usually twice or more calorie dense than a carb one wth are you talking about, its pure FAT. in fact keto works not because you can eat more, but because people stop getting so hungry.
Since they want to be anecdotal, Goodybeats struggled with acne before keto and still does. He mentions his struggles in a few of his videos over the years.
I tried a lot of diets, and i discovered keto 8 years ago, never went back. I lost 20 pounds and maintained it ever since. I know this is anecdotal, but it worked best fore me. And in terms of calorie for calorie replacement comparison, its hard for me to comprehend how foods with no insulin response are not going to have a significant effect on weight loss compared to the ones that do.
Just because it`s hard for you to comprehend something, doesn`` make it not true. As Layne said; there are numerous of studies comparing keto and high carb diet while controlling for calories & protein. The results are pretty much the same.

Keto diets have had the most weight loss than any other diet in the short term, long term is a failure because of compliance. this gives credence to my end statement. A diet based on high fat could potentially prime the body to burn fat as fuel, why would a high carb diet burn any fat unless it exhausted all carbohydrates first? why would it when constantly being replenished by carbs? carbs coming with a load of insulin that signals your body to grow. i am not refuting the information, i am asking for an explanation- where as you only provided a low energy insult on my intelligence without any rebuttal

@@ericwrite8419 thats because of water loss in the short term. Using the term "weight loss" means nothing as there a many ways to lose weight.
The part where you mention how fat will not be burnt until all carbohydrates are burnt is not biochemically accurate. A calorie deficit will generally always create fat loss even if your diet was 100% carbohydrates (unless for example a thyroid issue was present).
I tried a keto diet for a personal anecdotal experiment and I found I put on more body fat and had less energy (after the adrenaline response wore off as cortisol increases on a keto diet and is responsible for converting noradrenaline into adrenaline) and was always hungry. I lift weights and lost muscle because alot of the conversion to glycogen came for a catabolic response of my muscles.
You don’t have to “throw away” or give up anything, that’s why making your own lower calorie meals that you enjoy is so damn sustainable

What do you recommend for someone with Rheumatoid Arthritis?
I did carnivore for a while, literally one rib-eye each night. Felt great, never hungry, didn't even think of food. Now back on a ' normal' diet , obsessed with food again , want to eat every 2 hours, constantly craving catbs..anecdotal evidence doesn't make it false.

The skin clearing i think they’re making the leap that some studies show for hidradenitis suppurativa seems to get better with decreased sugar intake. But it also shows improvement with overall weight loss so. What most people don’t seem to realize. They cut carbs. They cut gluten. They also are just overall cutting so much processed crap out of their diet. But no. It was the carbz
