I started playing football as a 6-year-old in what we call Pee Wee Football. I played every year through my 4 years of College. I was 21 in my last game. Unfortunately, concussions are a very big part of football. I was diagnosed with 5 of them during my playing career, and probably 2 or 3 more that went unnoticed. They have concussion protocols which try to minimize the damage done by concussions. Players must pass these protocols in order to get back on the field. When I played in the 70s and 80s, they just asked us if and when we could go back into the game, and usually the answer was yes. I'd do it all over again though!
The play @2:35...I was watching that game live. I am a NY Jets fan, sadly, they are always terrible :). But that receiver was knocked unconscious and did have a concussion. My son is 9 and plays. He's been a terror on defense and recently they've tried him out as a running back...he's broken 2 runs for touchdowns of 50 and 40 yards so far.
I lost my left leg playing football. I was hit by a defensive end, two linebackers and a free safety at the same time. Unfortunately, one of the hits was just below my left knee. It snapped it off. But to be honest, I played youth football, high school football, college football, semi-pro football and arena football. I loved big hits and rarely hurt... nothing an ice pack and an ace wrap couldn't handle. I also coached youth football, highschool football, arena football and I owned three semi-pro football teams. I watched both of my boys play football from youth up...I actually miss watching it. But I actually saw more injuries in soccer than football. And the ice is a gift. I can't tell you how many times I looked forward to sitting in a tub full of ice.
The NHL has an ongoing joke. "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out." The NFL that was a large part of what you just watched has the largest, strongest and fastest athletes in the world. The reference to it being like a car crash is very accurate.
This video has high school, college, and professional football games mixed together. My high school football team took a lot of concussions, I know as I was part of the medical response team during games. We would carry injured players off the field and do a quick once over. The paramedics would come in if they were bad but usually it was an easy check and they just get back up and onto the bench. Only one concussion in my senior year which was a first. A single concussion was a record. Although we were playing our rivals that night.
The player that Garen referred to as a tank in the video, his nickname was William “refrigerator” Perry because of his immense size and he was also known as very friendly and a jolly person so he was also called Santa Claus because of his shape and sweet nature. I think he was the largest player to ever play in the NFL. He was 6 feet 2 inches and as much as 390 pounds when he first entered the NFL out of college
Perry went to Clemson. And that dude was like 450lbs Perry's playing weight was 335in the NFL, he's listed as 'up to' 390 at clemson. (who also lists his usual playing weight at 335) The heaviest NFL player ever was Aaron Gibson, at 410. Perry was ok, but he wasn't even the best DL in his own family. Michael Dean Perry was much better. Quickest release off the ball I've ever seen. The bears in that era had several really likable guys. But for every Sweetness, they also had a Gary Fencik.
It's true. An NFL players career is relatively short, but by the time they get to the NFL, these players already have close to 20 yrs of playing football. Many start playing football when they are around 5yrs old.
Those are some brutal hits! Im sure it has been mentioned that some-maybe most-of those hits are not legal anymore. New rules implemented over the last decade are designed to protect a player in "defenseless" position (i.e. where a player can not brace himself for the hit that is coming). Hockey checks are sometimes just as brutal of course. Especially in situations where the player's attention is focused on gathering the puck and he has no idea the hit is coming. At least in hockey the player's teammates can immediately seek retribution for a hit that they consider "dirty".

Back in high-school we played a scrimmage (unofficial game/practice) on a soccer field. The parents were able to stand right on the sidelines. I hit a few guy's halfway decent, and with my mom so close it made her feel sick to her stomach. I was always proud of that
Not every game is like this. You might see a few big hits every game day across like 16 games. A lot of these are older too. There are more rules in place to penalize and prevent hits like this.
I've played hockey my whole life, and coached my son for over a decade. We are both NFL nuts and I told him when he was little that I love watching every Sunday with him (which we've done for nearly 2 decades) , but he was never going to play the game. Hockey can at times be brutal, football is brutal every single play. Huge difference.
I played as a teenager. greatest feelings to aggressively hit someone or get aggressively it. It is a guy thing... loved it. Injuries are taken very seriously. Perfect sport for young folk. they can get frustration out, go home, do chores, do homework. the young recover quickly.
I played football from about age 9 (Pee Wee) - age 21 (College). The rules are different now than when I played High School & College. You dont see as many big crazy hits like you used to because of rule changes to protect players. Now and then you get 1 that is insane. I have only taken 1 hit like that but because of my position in the game I delivered many. I have 4 knock outs of players, to many to count that had to leave the game, 3 referees that got in the way and took the shot. Ive had 5 concussions (give or take). 2 knee, 3 shoulder surgeries. Every bone has been broken at least once (even the xiphoid process (Tail bone). My fingers are now swollen with arthritis. But tbh I loved the game and it helped me get into University and later Military. After Military I retired as a 25 year Firefighter/Medic. The physicality is 1 thing but being a team sport and as violent as it was/is. Helped me understand and prepare for later life.
Just curious if Garon follows artistic ice skating. Ilia Malinin is the current male champion and is the first to do 6 different Quad jumps in his routine. He also did the first completed Quad Axel jump which is actually 4 1/2 turns. I used to compete in roller skating, but, that never took off on TV.
There is a rule that’s been put in for a while called “Targeting” which is any hit to the head or neck pretty much anything above the shoulders while the player on offense or defense is defenseless. If u get called for it once in a game u, the player, are disqualified for the rest of the game. In college if u are ejected bc of targeting u then sit out the first half of the teams next game
I played football from a little kid through high school. At a high school practice me and a teammate tackled the running back, I got up my teammate didn’t. Long story short, he was airlifted in a helicopter to the hospital. He showed up at school weeks later wearing a metal contraption resting on his shoulders with bars standing vertically past his head which were screwed into his head to stabilize his neck. Doctor said he was extremely lucky he was not paralyzed and couldn’t never play any contact sports again. That was wild and terrifying.
@@TheArtistFKApingaso3687 that truly does sound a terrifying experience for little ones. I hope your friend found a much better way/path in their life. That i imagine was a eye opening and humbling exp.
A really rare thing that happened about a year or two ago now, is someone got hit in the check in such a way that it actually stopped his heart and he dropped like a potato on the field. One in a billion of it happening, but it was crazy.
Just a small FYI. I played up until the doc said, "If you want to walk at all when you get older, Stop Now"! In 12th grade, HS, I had arthritis already. Yes, these guys are big. In 12th grade I was 6'-3" 272 lbs. I worked out and was able to bench quite a bit. I played offensive line, (tackle), defensive line, (Nose), and I was on the punt team. I had at least one concussion, I broke a tip off my fibula, hence the arthritis, tore my ACL, MCL and sprained the meniscus. That was around 38 years ago. Somedays it hurts like heck, but I'd do it again right now if I could. *The doctor I went to in 12th grade... Dr. Paul Steele who at the time was the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL orthopedic doctor. While in his office, Mike Webster, the Steelers center came in. He had a dislocated elbow from his own teammate falling on his arm. Walter Abercrombie the Steelers running back at the time bent Mikes arm the wrong way!*
Great review, I know there are weekly videos of the greatest college plays each week. You all should watch those, they are a bit more average of the plays and hits. These were the worst over decades so they are not what you usually see. I played back in the 80s (rocket or grade school and then high school) we didn't get hurt much but there were some significant injuries. However, I remember helping carry a girl basketball player off the court to the ambulance as she torn up her knee. I never played hockey but had friends and family who have and honestly those hits are much worse in my opinion. I am a firm believer that football is the true American game not baseball anymore. If you guys get a chance check some of the weekly best play videos, get Kat and Leah to watch as well, Kat's reaction was funny, but most moms here fell the same way. Looking forward to more.
when my son was 13 and in junior high school, he played football and played as a fullback, he was quite large for 13. He was 5'foot 8 inches tall and about 170 lbs. Because of his size, he and one other member of the team had to go and practice with the high school team because unfortunately in practice they would end up hurting their own teammates. I remember that I was at one of the games, and my son was on the field and throwing the opposite team players off, the coach of the other team kept hollering out to take my son down, it was funny because my son had two boys holding onto his lower legs trying to stop him and he kept running flipping them around like they were nothing more than a toy. One of his own teammates during practice heard the coach tell him to take my son down and he turned and looked at the coach like he wanted to yell back that he didn't want to die. I was laughing so hard. He only played football for two years. Every coach from junior high to high school knew my son.
Even playing sandlot football as a kid with out pads, the goal was to hit as hard as you can. We had a fence going along one side of our field and the goal was to hit someone hard and drive them into the fence.
It's fast. It's dangerous. It's American! Destroyed my ACL in High School, but I played Quarterback and Running Back. Still get together with my old team and friends for pickup games once a month. We love it! Also American Football is a Collision Sport, not a Contact Sport 😉
Check out the most athletic plays! Sunday i watched the Philadelphia Eagles play, and Barkley had a run like ive never seen before! It will go down in history as one of the craziest athletic plays ever! He did a spin move to dodge one defender, then jumped backwards OVER TOP of another defender.
a lot of people outside of the US talk about how much padding football players wear, but what they dont realize is, those pads dont do much and actually become weapons, especially helmets, thats why the rules have change significantly to try and reduce the frequency of these types of hits, especially helmet to helmet
The body always gets stronger when it's stressed. But yeah. The head hit stuff. Be careful. At the end of the day it's your choice... We'd all be living in cages if you want to completely safe.
These were NFL, college, high school and that one of kids playing. Most of these hits are not legal any more. They have outlawed helmet to helmet hits and even shoulder to head contact. Too many concussions and too many ex-players who had serious brain injuries.
These clips come frim every level of American football from children to the NFL . Yes there has been a concerted effoet to eliminate them by rules and rererees but it is still very much an impact sport ...
@5:00 more padding. Its a compromise for the players. The pads really dont do much and the bigger the pads the more it reduces you mobility. So the players tend to wear the smallest pads they can. Would you rather wear somethign that slightly reducess how much it hurts when you get hit or would you be as fast and agile as you can be?
I was a lineman...big guys that line up across from eachother...were vommonly told that each time us guys on the line would hit, its the equivalent of a car crashing into a wall at 45mph. Thats us just going from a ready position to shoving the guy across from you... I was average for lineman at 6'2 275.... Our guys in the back field are usually built like Garen...you know the guys running and throwing gifts ng off the big hits from this video...thise guys its like hitting a wall at 55-60mph. Because of the running impacts.... We usually startlittle kids with Flag football...basicall theres two pieces of cloth attached to a belt and you yank it off instead of physically tackling...its to teach you rules, plays etc ....the. Pop Warner...its those little kids in Pads...the. You get in to 12-13 Jr high football, the. Highschool etc....but its almost a tight if passage for boys...at sometime you have to play...it may not be their thing...but at least they tried...
Professional Bull Riding wreaks is also very crazy.. Something you tried as a high school kid... and now you just look back and say... why in the world did I try that.
@5:50 picking players up and slamming them down is a grey area. There is a rule called "unnecessary roughness" that can include this but its up to the refs to decide if it was just part of the tackle or being well, i guess excessive lol. On most plays they will say no. Unless its a QB then if you breath on them its a penalty.
I played HS football in the late 1970's. During that time I attended two funerals for HS players who died while leading with their heads while making a tackle. Their necks were broken. I was never taught to make a tackle with my head, but with my face and squaring up to my target. I never had a problem. These days, all leagues from HS to the NFL have cracked down on the use of the helmet while making hits. It's also not just about using the helmet, it's about hitting defenseless players or players who are not involved in the play. When I played the mentality taught was that you play until the whistle blows and that everyone is fair game. I never played that way, mainly because it seemed stupid to knock the crap out of someone who was 20 yards behind the play.
Concussions happen thought they are striving for safe impacts through improved helmets and teaching form tackling. At the Pros and college levels and high school levels there’s a huge emphasis on player safety and hitting defenseless players. But either way football is contact/ collision sport and there are risks involve just the same as hockey or any other contact sport
Football players tend to try out for WWE when their careers start winding down. WWE is full of former football players. Roman reigns, the Rock, Jim duggan, Batista at one point, the hardy boys, Rick rude, the list goes on. They really get better over time when wrestling as they find their groove. Also they are less injury prone when wrestling.
Yes, there's a lot of concussions and long-term brain injury in American or Canadian football. They keep making rule changes to try to minimize it. Several of the hits you see in this vid were legal at the time, but are now outlawed. And it's unlikely that you'd have seen any hits like this even if you watched a whole game back in the day. Two guys smacking directly into each other, both at full speed, is pretty rare. But it does happen.
I broke my collar bone playing football with the neighborhood guys....just looked at my mom and said I'll be fine. Thank you for naming me after my Father. 6'6" and 250lbs our moms don't raise little boys. Remember my mom waking up during the night to make sure I was still conscious after getting a concussion...I fell of a car going 40 mph. My mom is tiny he was a giant compared to her.
Helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, rib protectors, a cup, thigh pads , and knee pads. Its common to see college, and NFL players in huge ice baths right after the game. In the off season, alot of players use medical cannabis to help their brain heal from from all the hits.
It is definitely a dangerous, physical game. There are big hits in every game. I'm always amazed when they get right back up & keep playing- not always of course. Some of these hits wouldn't be allowed today, NFL has cracked down on what they call defenseless player hits. It still happens & people still get hurt, but without regulations & fines, it would be way worse. Hope you can find a way to watch the current games. I know you can watch some old games on UA-cam- check out past super bowls
@2:20 how many have concussions? Interesting questions because if you ask the nfl we are looking at 2 to 5ish a week. I would be very suprised if the number wasn't a little higher. As crazy as this video is all hits are not this bad.
Out of the 32 teams that play 16 regular season games there may be 20-25 hits like this in a season... so not every game is a absolute gauntlet like this... plus many of these hits are now illegal due to the long term damage on players... however its still really violent and amazing....
In football and also I learned in wrestling, strength in your neck. Do neck exercises. Help from getting knocked out concussions. Help for all that. Strong neck. Yall keep up the great work much love from Lawton Fort Sill Oklahoma ***THE GERBLAXICAN ***
You should react to Day in the life of a D1 College Football Player. That way Garin can see what top sports facilities in the US look like. Your daughter can also see a US college campus.
A good portion of these are high school and college kids, not even NFL. Also yes injuries are a worry but as a football/baseball mom...my son has played both. He's had 2 concussions, a broken ankle, 2 broken fingers, & numerous sprains etc. All while playing baseball. Zero football injuries & he's a defensive lineman. So nothing is 100% safe. 💐
I know it's not the point of the video, but since it was briefly mentioned, football games usually go close to 3 hours on average. Which is ironic that fans of other sports usually lambast baseball for being too "boring" and "slow" but they all run at about the same time when everything is said and done.
This is why I say football is tougher than rugby. The pads give you a sense of security, it is the reason why players hit harder than they could without them. The hits have been equated to car crashes.
definitely need to do the biggest hockey hits,,,,,,,and if you want to see something really awesome watch "3 Hockey Fights in 4 Seconds! and 2 Goals in 45 Seconds! (Bruins vs Stars 02/03/11)"
@3:50 is this normal and can we get the gsmes here? This is more a once or twice a game thing as far as the hits. As far as watching it there. Lookup NFL game pass. Its price varies from country to country but it is a steal (like 10-20 dollars US) most places compared to what they charge us over here. (Sunday ticket costs roughly 100 a month and doesnt have all the stuff international game pass has.
I used to play football when I was a kid all the way up until high school and then stopped playing after I graduated but also I was racing Motocross and I've definitely hit my head more times racing or just riding dirt bikes in general crashed my dirt bike one time doing about 60 mph into a steel hole I guess you could say that Mark's wear a cul-de-sac starts that has a reflector on it and that was probably the worst one yet tore my meniscus broke my wrist don't know if I had a concussion that I can recall because I don't remember my ears ringing at all but I hit my head really hard but when I was playing football I played safety cornerback and sometimes wide receiver I also have really bad seizures and I do believe I have CTE from those and other things but I still would do it all over again
If you ever decide to expand your content to include movie reactions, and you're looking for a good sports movie, I would recommend one called Slap Shot. It's a hilarious hockey comedy that you would all enjoy, perhaps especially Garon.
I was 310lbs in high school and was a blocker in my last game I broke 2 peoples arms in one play and a guys nose in another and then i wasnt allowed to play anymore mom said i was to big and was just going to keep hurting people. She said she wasnt going to have that mess in her house.
I played both hockey and football and hockey has much more padding. In football you have the helmet, shoulder pads and pants with some padding for your thighs and not much for the knees.
I played football from the first grade until my freshman year of college (about 13 years) some of the guys who play professionally can play until they reach their mid/late 30’s
Mom yells "are you okayyy" dad yells" go get him, payback!" Lol 😂
Lol! Kat was looking out of the corner of her eyes part of the time. 😂
This is why our football is called a collision sport
Agreed
The combination of the look on Kat’s face and Garen saying “I like this” at 2:14 was priceless.
4:14 The amount of strength needed to fully stop a 250+ lb dude at full sprint then lay him out like that is absolutely insane 😅

He was
5'foot 8 inches tall and about 170 lbs.
You should watch the NHL Detroit Readings vs Colorado Avalanche fight night at the Joe
99% of these hits are illegal now. Most of them would get someone suspended.
yup that's why football now pretty much sucks now, they might as well make it flag or tag football.
That's not true. It's probably more like 50 percent at most
@@alanm03 nobody cares what you say.
@@BigMoore1232 Obviously you do or you wouldn't have commented.
Not 99% of them
2nd post real quick - the hits you were watching have names or phrase. Laying the wood - de-kleeter - slober knocker just to name a few
If you are going to stop it several times please click back a few seconds each time you pause it 😀
Growing up here in the US we all played football like this but no pads & no helmets on the street , in parks and playgrounds.
The memories😂😂
The good old days when we weren't worrying so much.
I remember running full speed into a concrete light post while trying to catch a overthrown ball.
@ we were knocking eachother senseless 😂
a lot of people outside of the US talk about how much padding football players wear, but what they dont realize is, those pads dont do much and actually become weapons, especially helmets, thats why the rules have change significantly to try and reduce the frequency of these types of hits, especially helmet to helmet
Yall guys should react to lawrence taylor highlights next
These clips come frim every level of American football from children to the NFL . Yes there has been a concerted effoet to eliminate them by rules and rererees but it is still very much an impact sport ...
@5:00 more padding.
Its a compromise for the players. The pads really dont do much and the bigger the pads the more it reduces you mobility.
So the players tend to wear the smallest pads they can. Would you rather wear somethign that slightly reducess how much it hurts when you get hit or would you be as fast and agile as you can be?
Yes players get hit like this a lot but they know that it comes with the game so it’s not unexpected
❤ YALL
Professional Bull Riding wreaks is also very crazy.. Something you tried as a high school kid... and now you just look back and say... why in the world did I try that.
@5:50 picking players up and slamming them down is a grey area. There is a rule called "unnecessary roughness" that can include this but its up to the refs to decide if it was just part of the tackle or being well, i guess excessive lol. On most plays they will say no. Unless its a QB then if you breath on them its a penalty.
Football is a man’s sport. Every play you run the risk of getting the ever living sheet knocked out of you
I played HS football in the late 1970's.
Some of these hits are no longer allowed u can’t hit a defenseless player
The length of career usually depends on what position you play
This video had all ages in it. Rule of thumb if there isn’t a name across their shoulders they are jr high and high school
University players also do not have names on the jersey. Only professional players have their names on their jerseys.
@2:20 how many have concussions?
Through it all, the #1 goal even after getting leveled is to hang on to the football
Man I miss when these hits would happen all the time!
I was one of those that just enjoyed any contact sport so played football and hockey.
When the lil boy said he would kill them. I’m like he has no clue. 😂 our pee weed will destroy him. You haven’t played. It’s different than rugby
Yall need to react to The Assassin Jack Tatum ! He was brutal, when it came to football
I would rather kill myself that watch baseball.
Well football does have halftime as part of the 3 hours
This is why I say football is tougher than rugby. The pads give you a sense of security, it is the reason why players hit harder than they could without them. The hits have been equated to car crashes.
You guys need to watch the youtube videos on the High School footballs biggest hits.
You guys should do a video on how different US schools are compared to your kids school
definitely need to do the biggest hockey hits,,,,,,,and if you want to see something really awesome watch "3 Hockey Fights in 4 Seconds! and 2 Goals in 45 Seconds! (Bruins vs Stars 02/03/11)"
You guys should watch marching bands! USA football games have amazing bands esp in the HBCU circuit
Check out Marshawn "Beastmode" Lynch and his "Beastquake" run that cause a mild earthquake from the fans jumping up and down.
Moms reaction is priceless. They used to be worse old school NFL. Cause of concussions they have changed some of the rules. It's still brutal.
They have this seasons weekly NFL highlights here on Y T
If you ever decide to expand your content to include movie reactions, and you're looking for a good sports movie, I would recommend one called Slap Shot. It's a hilarious hockey comedy that you would all enjoy, perhaps especially Garon.
I have seen ppl do game overviews on Sundays and Mondays
I was 310lbs in high school and was a blocker in my last game I broke 2 peoples arms in one play and a guys nose in another and then i wasnt allowed to play anymore mom said i was to big and was just going to keep hurting people. She said she wasnt going to have that mess in her house.
Get well, gotta check out the NHL hits!
