I have said that Jono will not want to go home after visiting Texas. Now I am convinced that Lea will have to be dragged to the plane, kicking and screaming, “No!! Just leave me here!! There’s still things to do!!!!” LOL 😂. The look on her face says, “I just want to be there.” Hopefully y’all will be able to come over soon. Hope y’all had a great Valentine’s Day.🤠👍🇨🇱

The first one, with the Native American on horseback, was Florida State University Seminoles. Our mascots represent an actual chief and his horse from history (Chief Osceola and Renegade). It’s funny that you said it means war when he got off of Renegade and threw the spear in the ground. That is actually what it means. You see, normally Chief Osceola and Renegade ride to the middle of the field and rare up. Then he plants the spear. (My favorite to watch) Only when our team plays the University of Florida Gators does Chief Osceola get off of his horse and plant the spear. Big rivalry game. What you hear the crowd doing is the “War Chant” and the motion with their arms is called the “Tomahawk Chop”. It’s a fun atmosphere. If you’re ever here during the season you should visit.

The tradition of “War Eagle” came from when the university of Georgia and Auburn played their first game back in 1892. There was a civil war veteran present at the game and he had a pet eagle he found on the battlefield during the civil war and it got loose during the game. Auburn was behind in the score but when the eagle got loose and flew around the stadium , Auburn’s football team saw it as a sign and a rallying cry and proceeded to win the game. Ever since then Auburn flys an eagle around the stadium as one of arguably the best traditions in college football. And to answer your question they rotate a few eagles including bald eagles and golden eagles. Also all eagles are rehabilitated eagles that can’t be reintroduced back into the wild so they become ambassadors for their species. Hope this helped yall. War Damn Eagle!

The one with the eagle flying around the stadium was the University of Auburn War Eagle. The eagle close over the stadium for luck. The one with the Roman centurion was the University of Southern California. The nickname is the Trojans and the pre game tradition is for the Drum Msjor to plant his sword into the 50 yard line.

The bigger stadiums are over 100,000 people. The home team crowd tries to make as much noise as possible when the opposing team's Offense is on the field to drown out their play calling. You can also detect the large crowd jumping up and down on nearby earthquake seismometers.

Every single reaction from people from outside the US says " it's just 2:51 college!" Oh my!! College football culture is massive and what you see on those videos is absolutely typical for Saturdays in the fall every year!! Also, every school has a marching band. They put on intricate and awesome halftime shows. You should watch some of those videos! Yes, tailgating is huge and goes on all day! Auburn University in Alabama has the eagle. Their chant is "War Eagle!" LSU in Baton Rouge hasike the Tiger but they no longer put him in a cage and bring him into the stadium for the game. Their stadium is sometimes called "Death Valley" and was measured to be the loudest stadium in the SEC or country. Hope you guys get to go to a college game, preferably in the south!!!

To be really honest, the big reason for the popularity and how big college football is in America is college football is BIG MONEY! Big money made for the colleges, big money for the tv networks, big money for the coaches, big money for the merchandising like T-shirts, Jerseys,Mugs etc, and Big money made for the sponsors with the tv advertisements of products.

The team with the covered wagon was the University of Oklahoma Sooners. The name is taken from the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The U.S. government was distributing lands taken from native americans and assigned to people who were literally rushing out to grab their piece of land. The term "Sooner" came from those who got to a parcel sooner than any of the other 50,000 people who were, for lack of better term, competing for a piece of land. For this reason, the state of Oklahoma is known as "The Sooner State."

American college football has so many great traditions. I'm a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy (Go Falcons!!), my son is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point (Beat Navy!), my second son-in-law's brother is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis (Beat Army!), my father earned his bachelors degree at South Dakota State University (go Jackrabbits!) and have been the national champions in football in their division for the past two years, beating out the North Dakota State Bisons, which is my father-in-law's alma mater and were the perennial champions of their division for almost a decade. My father earned his Masters Degree at the University of Wyoming (Go Cowboys!), and his Ph.D. at the University of Texas in Austin (Hook 'em Horns!). My brother is a graduate of the University of New Mexico (go Lobos!), my sister from Colorado State University (go Rams!), my youngest daughter and her husband from the University of Texas in San Antonio (Beep, Beep! Go Roadrunners!). However, my two eldest daughters are graduates of Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas. Everything I related prior to that statement was intended to point out that I have a lot of experience with college football traditions, but I know of no college, university or any other institution of higher learning that has greater traditions than Texas A&M University. It is in a class of it's own. Texas A&M is the home of the 12th man, where all students stand during football games to demonstrate their readiness to go on to the field if needed, probably the only major university that doesn't have "cheerleaders," they have "yell-leaders" who are all male, and actually lead the student body in "yells." And as a teaser, you need to know that Aggies never lose--they may run out of time or they may be outscored, but AGGIES NEVER LOSE. You'll have to Google it to fully appreciate it. Gig 'em!!

In the USA it is the first time men and women on a college campus played on the same court and the same sport. The women played in the dress of the day, long skirts, high heeled shoes, and long shirts.

The college team names reflect the heritage and culture of the states. Example, the Tennessee Volunteers reflect the Tennesseeans who have fought in wars, the Florida Gators reflect the Florida wildlife, Native American tribes are represented by teams all over the country such as the Florida State Seminoles (flaming spear) and University of Illinois fighting Illini. Every state has a unique identifier. The badger state (Wisconsin), the Tarheel state (North Carolina), the Hoosier state (Indiana) and their teams reflect those names as well. The history of the states are so blended into the history of the game that they add to the fans identifying with a team or teams. Throwing cross state and intrastate rivalries and it is truly magical. Plus the US is a big country. We do things big.

What you have to understand about college football is that it started DECADES before professional NFL football. The first college football game was between Rutgers and Yale Universities in 1869. The NFL did not begin until the 1920s. So these traditions predate professional football by many years.
Second, there are many colleges around America in small towns and small states that to this day do not have professional teams. So many people identify with the college teams they can actually easily see play.
Third except for baseball which has a minor league system to develop players college sports are essentially the minor leagues where NFL level players get to play in front of the hometown fans. The fans strongly identify with their teams as a result of these factors. And they show up.
I grew up in Tennessee before the NFL Tennessee Titans existed. The Nearest professional team to me was in Atlanta Georgia or Cincinnati Ohio. Hundreds of miles away, but my local university had a team just six miles away and the University of Tennessee was just 90 miles (2 hours drive) from home. I saw many games of both teams years before I could see a professional football game. Saturdays in September through November are festivals outside the stadiums. With tail gate parties, barbecues, alcohol, marching bands, alumni events, rallies, etc. and every game is as important as a playoff because only 12 teams make the playoff based on how well they did.

When they find out college football TV deals are in the billions and many of these colleges are in rural towns or places without any pro teams so the entire state and more supporting these teams they’ll understand the stadium size 😂

You’re bang on about the tailgating. People just having a good time bbq’ing food, getting as drunk as possible so you don’t have to buy as many drinks inside the stadium. 99% of people in there have a truck and they put down the tailgate for people to sit/hangout/drink on hence the term “tailgating”

Jono, at any sports event, scream for your son if for nothing else show him you are a PROUD father. Also at the next event open the trunk/boot of your car pull out a chair and table and sit with
a drink and a burger. Maybe you'll start a fad.

The NFL is the newcomer, it's only been around since 1920. College and High School football are both older.
