Bill got some heat for what he said (which I think he deserved), and then things moved on. I am still a fan, but think that the conversation that was had was completely appropriate.

  • @flyinggeese3740

    PLEASE READ: As a black man, I cannot stand behind Ice Cube's or the girl's on this one. All other blacks (or whites) who were offended by it, be honest with yourselves. We decided as a society that race jokes in comedy were a thing quite some time ago. It's just funny. Bill Maher was doing his thing as a comedian. I personally didn't find the joke that funny, but it's not because I was offended in the slightest. Maher makes several jokes that I don't find funny, even ones about Trump. It's part of comedy.
    For Ice Cube to come on there and say, "To me, this is a political show". Fuck that. It's politics and comedy, and don't pretend like you didn't fucking know.
    I've been following Maher for years, and I haven't heard him say anything that made me think he wasn't on my side. And of course, it's hella easy to find videos him vehemently opposing racism, so don't give me that, "You say white trucker stuff sometimes". If you ask me, and you did since you've read this far, this is the biggest problem with the black community. Whenever an offense is committed on us, we try to milk it for everything, to the point of saying absurd shit. Like how they called Mike Brown a gentle giant, even though he was caught on tape bullying just moments before he died. He was killed by a white officer, and all of a sudden he made honor roll in school.
    This is another milking. An offense was made, and now Cube gets on the air saying Maher makes "white trucker" jokes sometimes (citing no evidence, of course), and then tries to see what he can get out of it by stripping Maher of comedy and effectively saying "this is a political show now". I lost all respect for Ice Cube in this.
    As far as everything the woman said goes ... if anything she mentioned crossed your mind when Maher made that joke, especially to that level of detail --- who the fuck immediately thought, "Oh shit, how could he say that on the 400th anniversary of slaves being brought over here!" ... If you think like that woman thinks, I promise you're causing more problems than you're solving.

    Accountability goes both ways on this.... Has Ice Cube and all of the gangsta and hip-hop rappers who banged out the word 'nigga' millions of times in their songs, ever considered the cultural impact and message they are sending? People of all walks of life rap along with the lyrics of those rap songs that mentions the word 'nigga' repeatedly... What do we suppose hearing the word over and over again in a song will eventually do to the minds of the listener? We can't be surprised when others loosely use a degrading word, when we've made it OK to publicly demean and degrade ourselves using it.

Good cops should not try to hide the actions of bad police officers. Is it really so hard to say “black people have a disadvantage by being black in certain situations where a white person may not have the same problem”. People just like to fixate on the atrocities committed by whites when you can go back in history of any race and see the atrocities. • @LittleBaardo
      @LittleBaardo 7 років тому +2

      Not quite in line with what Ice Cube was talking about, which was specifically about how police treat black citizens in the US. Something that has been perpetuated by a string of policies we lump into "the war on drugs" which has not stopped or halted in the last 25 years. Drug laws disproportionately effect black people. Courts disproportionately sentence black people.
      And for further context Obama was not universally celebrated. Did you watch the GOP debates for this election? Slamming Obama was the easiest way for a candidate to garner an applause. He ended his presidency on a high but very shortly prior to that he was riding a downward curve into disapproval largely as a product of a smear campaign by conservative politicians and media that lasted his entire two terms. One of the fingers of that campaign questioned if the guy was even born in this country, a racist inquiry that lasted through most of his first term. One of the people that spearheaded the birther movement was the very man who replaced Obama in office.
      That being said progress has fluctuated. I think racial equality movement's have lost a lot of ground because white people have become exacerbated with call-out culture which has left otherwise subtly racist white people susceptible to white supremacist narratives and messages. We certainly aren't as racially optimistic now as we were in 2008 when Obama was elected. The political left can certainly take some credit for that, most progressives are so used to being right they've forgotten how to respectfully discuss issues with different perspectives or walks of life.

    He says it's like a knife when that word is said (I agree? I hate all hateful words like that) but in the same sentence he says "it's our word now... as black people we can call each other that, but when white people say it, it's like a knife"
    it either IS a hateful word or it ISN'T. You can't claim a word for yourself. Don't you realize that when you say it's only ok for black people to use it, THAT'S RACIST? Would it only be ok for white, Asian, or Mexican people to do or say a certain thing because of their skin? No.
    Should Bill have said that word? No. Why? Because it's disrespectful, hateful, toxic. Should anybody really use that word? No. Why would you want to disrespect yourself, your family, or friends?
    I think no one should use that word, period. No one should be treated good or bad because they're black, white, yellow, brown or whatever. People like to focus on differences. Instead, why don't we focus on likenesses. We all have differences, yes, but we all have so many more likenesses. We are all human, and we all look a little different. Where's the love?
    It's easy to hate. The real challenge is to find at least one thing to love about someone. Even if you might not like them.

    As long as people continue to classify people according to color, we will continue to have racism. Classifying people into this category or that category creates division. We are all human beings. There are good people and there are bad people. We cannot get away from that. But until you know what type of person you are dealing with, treat them the way you would want to be treated. If a person or persons try to put you down, you are being tested by God to rise above it. I wanted to be a Police Officer, and when I applied, I was told, we are not hiring white men. Even Officers from another city with 10 years of experience were told the same thing. They had a policy to hire more minorities and women as there were too many white male officers on the force. What did I do, established a new career path, which in the end, proved to be a superior job that match my personality. I wouldn't change a thing if I had to do it all over. No regrets. If I had any regrets, I would make a change in my life to make it right. Thank you for reading this. I hope this helps anyone look at things in a different light. God Bless you all.

Segregation in America has had generational effects and many black children are still affected today by these policies. Predominantly black communities in general don’t have access the same educational resources as middle class white communities. I understand the idea of what you’re trying to say and it’s nice, but things like this aren’t fixed by just saying “we’re all equal and the same” and calling it a day.
