I'm over here choked up. All he wanted to do was to be a normal kid, go to school and be accepted. With all of what he went through, he never had a bad word to say about anyone nor be a victim. I was very little when this happened but I remember him very well.
That poor kid was so wise beyond his years and so forgiving to those unbelievably ignorant and hateful cruel parents and even try to make excuses for them Ryan was 10 times the human being they would ever hope to be
Thank you for posting this. I was a 20 year old service worker when I first read of Ryan White from that People Magazine mentioned in your post here. I remember Ryan White. I will not forget him or dismiss the time he had here on this Earth. I salute you Mr. White.
Sheri Lene Williams The first time I saw his story as a kid it made me sad. Ryan was one of the most kind hearted human being ever. It’s sad that he had to endure mistreatment. He was very handsome and smart. I just wish he never got sick and had to suffer. Today he could have been someone’s husband or dad today. God is a good God. Continue to Rest In Peace Ryan 😢😢😢😢😢
I can’t express how grateful I am to have found this video. I’ve loved Ryan for so many years and truly admired his life’s work. I really wanted to see an interview with him and this is more than I could ever have asked for. This dear young man will be one of the first people I look for after this world is in the rear view mirror.
Spencer Gilchrest Yeah, the whole community of Kokomo back then should be ashamed of themselves for all the ignorance and prejudice they cause on Ryan, but when the house got shot at, the White family were like “That’s it! We’re getting the hell out of Kokomo!”. I’m glad that both Elton John and Michael Jackson became friends with Ryan and able to help him whenever they can to keep him alive.
@@princeofpop8 It was a BB gun, not a rifle or hand gun. People with HIV/AIDS were treated poorly in Kokomo and many other communities across Canada and the U.S. Not specific to him. That doesn't meant that it was right, but it is common in epidemics of infectious diseases. There were also those who stood up for Ryan in Kokomo. They suffered the abuse with him.
I would highly recommend everyone read Ryan's book entitled "Ryan White: My Own Story". I have it and I've read it numerous times. He was such an inspiration to many.
He was such a wonderful and handsome youg man who had so many years ahead of him, years he did not reach....Rest in peace Ryan! Thank you for giving Aids a face in such a wonderful way.
His exhibit at the Children's Museum scared me as a kid, but the reason why it scared was because I didn't know what it was or, really, who Ryan was. I had to push forward and educate myself on what AIDS was and what hemophilia was. At 12, I got his book for Christmas and I'm 24 now, and I've read that book cover to cover so many times, it's so worn. This is why education is so important! Fear and lack of education are the 2 main catalysts for chaos and hysteria.
This breaks my heart about what Ryan had to endure during those times! So much was new and unknown. People reacting from fear of the unknown were inflicting so much cruelty on him and his family. I am HiV + and was diagnosed in 1992. With the meds they have now, HIV + is now managed pretty much like Diabetes. As long as you stay on your meds, it is managed well. I owe a lot to this BRAVE young man!!
So hard to see Ryan so thin! He died not long after this aired. My husband Tim lived just as long after his diagnosis, dying of AIDS in 1995, three years after Ryan White's passing. He helped make the Ryan White Act possible, which paid for Tim and I to have people help me care for Tim at home. Tim and Ryan grew up in the same town, even went to the same church. I'd like to think about Ryan being at the pearly gate to welcome Tim home.
My God, what an inspiration he was!! So mature beyond his years! I hope all the kids that ostracised Ryan are now teaching their own kids the actual facts and to show compassion and empathy, I get it was a scary disease and not much was known but to make him feel so worthless was just heartbreaking!!
despite the many obstacles he had to face he was a very brave, intelligent and down to earth boy. miss you Ryan, thank you for educating us about this terrible disease. you are truly missed. I will never forget you. rest in paradise 💕
I remember years ago when I interned at channel 8 in Indianapolis. Reporters talked about this being one of the most heart breaking stories that they ever covered. It was before my time. I hate see this having loved ones whose survived through this. It’s a shame. He would have been alive today.
I had forgotten how ignorant people were back then. Such a strong and decent young man. He didn't deserve to be treated the way that he was. I've always admired his strength.
This is what being on the wrong side of history looks like. I wonder what all the ignorant fear mongering hateful people thinks of themselves now.. Warrior Ryan. You would never be forgotten.
I was watching with tears in my eyes. His voice is soo young for his age but mentally he is totally adult in his reasoning. What a tragedy to befall a young kid with his life before him. 50 years on, R.I.P. kid..
5:17 Man, my husband Tim LOVED Elton John and like Ryan, Tim found much of his support from the LGBT community. Thank God, we also found an amazing church a year before he died who also accepted him
I think if Ryan was still alive, I’d feel he’d make one hell of a social worker or a lawyer, fighting for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. Hell, I’d bet he’d be a Congressman fighting! For anyone who hasn’t seen his movie, I’d suggest you see it! It’s a tear jerker!!! Hell, you’ll need at least 2 boxes of Kleenex!
Yes, that is sad. Blood samples were not tested for HIV back then as they are now. And even with HIV, people now can survive with medication preventing it from progressing into AIDS. Magic Johnson was diagnosed little more than a year after Ryan's death, and he's still alive today.
People back then and now is some of the ignorent people in the world because today you still find that they think they can catch aids just by sitting by them or touching them. Go knows this breaks my heart because i remember when all this happend and when he died and was buried. God bless him always . He his a beautiful angel in heaven always. God bless his family always
I still have people who won't cut my hair. I've even had a nurse in the ER refuse to treat me because she was getting married in a week. This was in 2012!
What an amazing and brave young man he was who did not deserve to be treated like this by anyone I would have gladly like to have been able to call him my friend what an honor that would have been some people are so full of hate venom and ignorance and that’s the type of people who need and should be ostracized by others so sad that he lost his life far to soon oh how lucky heaven is to have such a sweet beautiful soul among all the other angels there the world truly lost an amazing young man the day god called him home god bless and be with his family 🙏🙏🙏🙏
oh my...the ignorance of those people...im glad that lady jill made her school understand what he had and then everyone became more understanding and respectable towards him...shame the kids parents wernt like that..but hey...
The ignorance is somewhat justified. We knew very little about AIDS in the early eighties, however, violence is unacceptable. He was so brave having to deal with everything he did. In my eyes he’s a hero!! RIP Ryan. ❤️🙏
Very tough to watch him. The guy really loved life. Makes me feel like I haven't made the best use of my own.
Very well spoken boy...RIP Ryan😔
What a smart and kind boy he was! Breaks my heart. Gone too soon.

Still, my hero to this very day, Thank You, Mr.White, RIP.
