My mother loved this film. She saw it whilst young in 1938 and never forgot it. Over and over she tried to find it again, but without the miracle of the internet she failed - couldn’t even find a reference for it. I’ve lost count of the number of times she sighed, saying she’d love to see ‘Wings of the morning’ again. It held a very special place in her heart. She died in 2007 without ever seeing it again. So here am I, having a sleepless night in 2024, I give up trying to sleep and instead turn to UA-cam - and what comes up on my feed at 1.30 am, but Wings of the Morning? Wow.
Given it was made in 1937, to today’s more sophisticated eyes we can see where the plot clunks, but given the colour, the beauty of the scenery, the wonderful views of London in the 1930s, the talented actors and the delightful - if somewhat naive - plot, this is a little gem. Another reviewer called it charming, and indeed it is. My mother, if seeing it today, may well have said it was outdated, but I can see exactly why she loved it so very much back then.

Absolutely charmed by this. Is it a young Hank Fonda, and to "see John McCormack sing," just wonderful. Thank you so much for the pleasure which made me shiver over and over again with joy.

my Great Grandmother was actually related to count John McCormick he visited her home in Foxford in County Mayo. My Great Grandmother was born in 1870 and died in 1960
This event of granting land in perpetuity really did happen, but it happened in central Europe. There's a documentary about their village...wonderful to see
yes, unfortunately some have used that to their advantage and have not done the true Romany any favours.
As children we used to steal mothers sheet curtains and used them as veils and dance and get married to brooms or mops or whatever. Great time until mother missed her curtains. Then we got ca switching.

Gypsy magic
Land was actually granted to the gypsies in a similar manner to the story here, but not in Ireland. Happened in central Europe, gypsies have their own small town to this day. Documentary about it is on youtube.

I hear you, but I adored it, to see John McCormack in his full glory was just about tipping over awesome for me, but your opinion is valid.
