- Cello Sonata nº 1 Op. 38 (1865), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Jacqueline du Pré, cello
Daniel Barenboim, piano
I. Allegro non troppo (00:00)
II. Allegretto quasi minueto (12:23)
III. Allegro (18:14)
Brahms composed the first two movements during the summer of 1862, as well as an Adagio which was later deleted. The final movement was composed in 1865. The sonata is actually entitled "Sonate für Klavier und Violoncello" (for Piano and Cello) and the piano "should be a partner - often a leading, often a watchful and considerate partner - but it should under no circumstances assume a purely accompanying role". It is dedicated to Josef Gänsbacher, a singing professor and amateur cellist. In the course of a private performance for an audience of friends, Brahms played so loudly that the worthy Gänsbacher complained that he could not hear his cello at all - "Lucky for you, too", growled Brahms, and let the piano rage on.
It is "a homage to J. S. Bach" and the principal theme of the first movement and of the fugue are based on Contrapunctus 4 and 13 of The Art of Fugue.
Brahms performed the sonata in Mannheim in July 1865 and then offered it to Breitkopf & Härtel, who turned it down. He had however also sent the sonata to Simrock describing it, in one of the most mendacious statements made by a major composer about his own work, as "a violoncello sonata which, as far as both instruments are concerned, is certainly not difficult to play", and they published it in 1866.

Truly one of the only cello sonatas that isn't a piano sonata.
I’m a pianist and I still remember the first time I performed this with a cellist friend. We had already performed the Grieg cello sonata, and this was so different! This felt like true chamber music, the close give and take between the two instruments was so inspiring, at times you really felt as if you were inside the music together. The Grieg had a much more pianistic accompaniment, great fun to play, but it always felt like piano AND cello. This Brahms sonata felt much more like cello WITH piano, the two parts inextricably forming a much more intimate and greater whole.
When the the melody of the second movement changes at 14:15 i honestly cannot describe how beautiful it is
It's so stunning❤️
Me pasa igual.
When I learned this sonata as a young cello student, I was always happy that I didn't have to play the piano part- which i considered more difficult than the cello part. My teacher did a wonderful job though, playing the piano and stopping when she wasn't happy with my performance.
piano parts are always more difficult than others in chamber music i m afraid haha
@@pianoman1857 But is it actually? Or might it just seem that way to musicians who are not used to seeing that many staffs and notes?
I play the piano and the cello, but I have always dedicated more effort and time to cello practice. So to me the piano parts often seem much harder too.
@@biancapelzer6016 I also play the piano and the cello, and I often accompany some friend on the piano, and what is really difficult (to me at least) is that you have to know the melody that the cello ( or any other instruments) is playing even more than you own part. And piano is more difficult to sight read as it's a vertical and horizontal sight reading vs. only horizontal sight reading. You must have a certain level to play with other with the piano vs. Others instrument where you play as ensemble from the beginning.
That's only my point of view on the question, i wish a nice day to anyone reading this haha!
@@loupiottt thank you, that makes sense. I feel like the piano is hard in other aspects than the cello, for one the music is a lot harder to memorize. The cello is easier to sightread and memorize, but you have to work on your tone and color a lot more to create a good sound.
the piano part actually for a professional pianist it isn't that difficult
13:17 Don't know why, but I love this phrase on the Cello
This work is one of the beautiful masterpieces of Brahms.. full of passion, sadness, happiness..ecc. He knew his instruments his counterpoint is magnificent. I love Brahms.
wow. that recapitulation in the 1st movement with cello reinstating the first subject with the piano counter melody. O.M.G.
bc293 it’s so beautiful. And the way the piano still adds tension is so beautiful

No one could deny that Brahms is a top-class composer after looking at that part.

I am learning this piece now (piano part). This is my favorite performance of all I've listened to. Restrained and clear, yet heartfelt. Just sublime.
Completed it?
Im also learning this piece (im in piano) for a duet with a cellist friend
Im also learning the piano part. Do you guys have recommendation on how to practice? Trying to find just cello part to play along with but havent been able to...
@@swaggy_jry That would be great! I suppose you could play along with the whole recording, though cello alone would be better. Supposedly there are ways to slow down the sound on UA-cam without changing the pitch.
Full of longing, love and a very deep despair.
A magical performance. Such beauty...
Johannes Brahms has been my greatest muse. His fourth symphony changed my life. (none other than renowned Brahms expert Walter Frisch responded to me when I told him that, "You too?" :)
Besides his centuries-renowned mastery of counterpoint, his uncanny relationship with melody, his inventive use of harmony, timbre, and form, there is also a gift hidden from most: his manner of making every staple, bracket, wiry connection and unwieldy connect seem God-given, and perfectly natural. The brackets shimmer, the bolts gleam, and so many other such tools leap, soar, or dive secretly octaves below our attention -- all to create the perfect setting for what follows-- suddenly we are thrust into another melody... another rhythm ....as if --as different as they are-- it was meant to be.
He is seamless.
In my special circle of favorite Brahms' works is this, his Cello Sonata in e minor (i think he invented that key !:)_that of his fourth symphony ... i think it is one of his most profound, uplifting, and affirmative works - one that i love and feel ever closer to through the years.... listen for those brackets and hidden transformations that disappear before your ears.....
Wow
I would add Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem.
This Brahms Sonata holds special personal memories for me as I accompanied a talented Russian cellist in a private concert many years ago, unfortunately he died of Cancer not long after.
Is there any recordings? I would love to see your performance
@@AJD45 no unfortunately I wish there was in hindsight.

Muchas gracias por todo el contenido 💗
Played this on double bass and it’s amazing. Love this.
I like the perfection of Brahms. The form of the piece is really well organized...
Beautiful! That's also a lot of work you did there!!!
around 3:20 it's so tender and it breaks my heart

it's that beautiful duet in unison. brings me to tears every time.

Una caricia para el alma.... Gracias
It's like a mature tragedy, it's not as flashy or grandiose compare to other romantique masterpiece because it doesn't have to be. "Melancolie" would be the right Word I think.
One of Brahms’ finest compositions.
I agree, I put it in his top 3, with the other two being Ein deutsches Requiem and...

Normally not a Barenboim fan, but he played this great.
This is much harder than it looks.
Bravo super sonata
Beethoven helped in the making of Brahms. Though in the former' shadow of influence, he produced quite a bit of soul stirring compositions. In the final analysis they are from the same tree of talent and creativity. Thank you God, wherever u b, for their xistence in our times.
Incrível.
This is real chamber music!❤️❤️❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
me matas de amor con esto
Hermoso
The third movement was played so lovely by cellist, such a pity Barenboim didn't play his part more clear and rhytmically...
I fall in love for Brahms 'cause this song! Oh, my god! My heart is so wickness when I hear this sonata! I love Brahms so and so!
@ 23:51 what is that descending March like part called? I’ve heard it a lot in this music style.
5:17❤️
There is a mistake at 1:25 , the cello plays Ab and it is written A on the score
This is the only edition I've ever seen that has an A natural rather than A-flat there. It may be a misprint--or maybe there is a good reason the editors felt the first iteration of this phrase contains A natural (and therefore alters the basic intervallic structure of the main theme). Every other edition that I have checked has an A-flat there, and every cellist that I have ever played this with (I am a pianist) has played an A-flat. I also don't believe I've ever heard a recording with A natural.
Yeah I think it’s supposed to say Ab because when I played this it was an Ab on my edition

Does anyone know where to find a more spring time romantic sensation sounding allegro section?
I was wondering this too during this spring time. Specifically for cello: Beethoven Cello Sonata op.69 in A major. For violin, Beethoven Violin Sonata “La primavera”, or maybe Grieg Violin sonata n.3.
I’d love to know more spring-sounding cello works
The cello is joyfully and mournfully crying in exact same spaces..... first movement was even measured and episodic......
24:14 Same transition to coda as Brahms' 2nd Piano Sonata
Guys I think sweet dreams was based on the theme in 1st movt
I would love to learn this on trombone.
as a pianist I was impressed by the keyboardist...checked the description and well, no duh
Wow thanks for the annoying ass Rise of Kingdoms add in the middle of this heart wrenching and gorgeous music.

I listen to this and i am deadly want to study music.
Well if you wanna play this in the piano or cello its gonna take you about 10 years of practice
Ditto, Mary
Can sombody help me on figuring out how to do the first part where it switches to alto clef?
it goes into tenor, but that’s all i know i play viola sorry
@@Alice-gr1kb thank you
It’s not really tenor but it’s basically like a string higher so over there it shows an a on the a string but it would kind of be a string higher so that would be like your e in 4th position u get that? Idk I’m not that skilled but that’s what I know from my knowledge. Same goes for other strings if you have an A on g string alto clef would make it an E on d string since it’s exactly a string apart or like 3 or 4 notes apart
