    I'm a competent pianist and composer but this piece started me off on my journey to be a cellist. It moves me beyond words. Soon, I hope, I'll be able to play it and I plan to perform it ay my own funeral!! Thank you so much for this glimpse of what I have to do to perform this wonderful piece.

      Michael Paul Smith it's not nearly as menacing as it appears. It's in a cello friendly key. You may want to consult with a cellist friend for the best fingering. For example, after the intro, you want to repeat the melody on your D string, not the A. Practicing 3-4 octave scales in this key will also help you find the notes in a more efficient manner. This is my go to piece for nearly every occasion. Bonne chance ⚜️🎻🎶

      I love the image of someone rising out of their coffin, cello in hand, and just playing and elegie for their guests ant their own funeral, then sinking back down... I know this isn’t what you meant but it’s a funny image in my mind

      Much luck and respect for anyone that could play this piece at their own funeral!!! The piece is strikingly beautiful though. I used to play a lot of cello I worked my way through college playing cello and played in lots of symphonies and I played this piece many times and it was always magnificent to play. I still remember playing that low C string for two measures and watching the c-string vibrate half an inch back and forth and just pulling out the raw beauty of that low C. my challenge was to always try to make that string vibrate more than I had made it vibrate before. And when I finally made the string rattle against the fingerboard I knew that I had reached my maximum. Let me tell you as a cellist this piece is worth becoming a cellist for. And later years after I played cello I also bought a violin and a viola and my encouragement to buy the violin was to one day play Massanet's Thais Meditation. I can kind of play it if I hold the violin between my legs like a cello but it doesn't work really well. I've got a long ways to go but there's also a lot of very beautiful music yet to play. I remain resolute.

    Having come to Faure's music at the age of 58 and only having known a handful of his music prior to this I have to say that I am totally captivated by his music and his manner of writing. Before I started to investigate his music and perform a series of interpretations with just piano and violin I had always found his music slightly difficult to listen to. Maybe it was because I was younger or just didn't give enough time to it, but how I missed out! His music is for music's sake and purely from the heart. Don't miss out on a wonderful experience. Open your ears, heart and mind and you will discover another world.

    Here from This War of Mine. This original version is a lot more melancholic, the sadness is flowing in a slow crawl. TWOM version is more... Desperate, I could say? The higher pitch and the fact that the survivors are put in such a bleak, horrible place, trying to outlive the war. Definitely gave that vibe. This is really nice.

    My mother had a CD of Pavane songs, and this just triggers memories of my childhood. I remember crying because I wanted to listen to classical music at like 9pm when I was about 7 and I had to wait until the morning. I sometimes feel that it's selfish of me because all I associate this with is with my own personal happy memories. I feel it would spoil it somehow if I saw someone actually playing these pieces. Is that awful?

      Everyone has their own experiences with music. Interestingly enough, your remark isn't the first time I've heard someone wanting to refrain from getting too involved with the music in such a way. Don't blame yourself for how you choose to appreciate art, so long as it's not hurting anyone :)

      +TheExarion One of the struggles of being a multi-instrumentalist! I always want to play ALL THE THINGS. But I can't do both at once, and yeah, I don't have a good way of recording it, either. (I also feel like it would be hard to get it to sound really good, a big part of playing with another musician is adapting to their rubato, and even if you know when you'll take some time or move through a part quicker, it's hard to get the balance right just by yourself)

      I'm assuming that you are under 30yrs old. If you would like to experience classical music from a different perspective,...listen to some "Emerson , Lake , and Palmer" . You won't recognize the classical music because they don't do it in the "Boring" grampa style.
      BTW,. if you like what you hear from them,...there are a great many othe artists that work in that same vein of classical rock genre. They might just change your life.

      You might be using too much pressure on the strings and pressing harder than necessary. Try playing with barely any pressure from your fingers like 20% pressure. It'll sound really really junky but that's okay. This first step you don't even really need to press the strings all the way down on the board. Then add a little more pressure gradually until your string starts to speak a really resonant clean note.
      That may not be the issue but that's always helped me relax my fingers. It's really hard to tell the issue without seeing any bit of your playing lol. Just always make sure your hand isn't a relaxed C shape. also it's really weird but if you think about relaxing your pinky it kind of relaxes the rest of your hand I learned that in a master class!
      Hope this helps!

    Quick question: am I allowed to use this piece as background to a video I'm making, or do I need to rerecord it myself?

    • @Varooooooom
      @Varooooooom 7 років тому +4

      (This is my second channel, because for some reason my main channel isn't letting me respond to you.) If you want the video to be monetizable, then you have to use this piece in a way that incorporates Fair Use. Typically, if you want to use the whole piece, then talking over most (I'd say 90%) of the piece will render it undetectable via UA-cam's copyright system. You could also bypass this problem by finding an uncopyrighted performance of this piece. You might have some luck finding that on UA-cam, but I recommend giving credit to the performers and shouting them out in the description of your video or in the video itself (you can find the performers to each of my videos in the description).
      If you want badass points though, I highly recommend rerecording this piece for yourself. That's the most sure way to make your video monetizable as well. Start with the piano part and then take the cello afterwards.

      Blue Moon i actually play cello too :) I got this piece from my private teacher and wanted to see how it sounds with piano so thats why i came here lol
      Whats ur fav part? I like measure 6 where i go down in d string to play e flat. Its just so beautiful and heartbreaking

      @@epicminecrafter5404 Yes it is! My teacher says, it should sound like a faint memory and I think it fits. Hm, my favorite part... The whole piece is breathtaking (and even sadder if you think about the fact that Faure wrote it for his dead wife). But my favorite part is probably measure 38/39 where you go into e flat after the whole fast part. It just sounds like pure despair (almost like a cry). It's difficult to play, I think on this part I struggle the most.
      How long do you play the cello? I play six years and try to practice a little harder, because I'm quite lazy xD. This piece is really motivating.

    Slightly turned,..
    Emotions
    No more tears shed
    Cascades run solely for the years lost
    Oh the burn
    Reminding me
    Bout those escapes
    Soft kisses
    Behind my neck
    My palm I place perfectly on top
    The place your lips once claimed
    Oh the burn
    Inside
    In me
    Burning up the remains
    Your name
    Scratched
    Me
    Within
    Like
    The
    Flame
    Oooh...
    Golden droplets
    No don't stop it
    Go on with my destruction

    Musically an excellent performance! HOWEVER, the piano tends to be too loud in relation to the cello. Perhaps the cello was not recorded properly and thus to quiet.

      @@hithere324 Tbh it sounds pretty even to me! Maybe it's just because I've been attuned to hearing it a certain way for over 6 years now haha. If I were to go out of my way to interpret it, I would argue that the cello is sort of passing off its torch to the piano so they can trade off back and forth at 4:05. But I can certainly see how one would prefer the cello to have the stronger voice at 4:00.

    It is a shame that the performers appear to have completely ignored Fauré's careful dynamic markings.

    • @TheExarion
      @TheExarion  6 років тому +4

      @Violedegambe 6 років тому

      Colin Kirkpatrick maybe he thinks about the dynamics of the piano part.
