Once we can find a way to prevent batteries from degrading over time, and charge to 100% in the same time it takes to fill a gas/diesel tank they definitely will

@@zacharybishop6595bingo. The key is R&D which requires funding, in the form of investments and people buying electric vehicles when the technology is still young and not as refined. Eventually the batteries won’t just be faster to charge and longer lasting, but also smaller, cheaper, and safer. I give it til 2035 at the latest before electric vehicles become more practical for the everyday consumer than ICE vehicles

As a heavy wrecker operator when automatics became more popular, accidents increased. I can see more incidents with an electric vehicle because just like when automatics came out there was a decrease by drivers mentally that they we hauling 80,000lbs. I seen this not so much in tractor trailers but in tri-axle dump trucks. I'm curious to see what the future holds for these e trucks. Nice truck.

Yeah I started working for a company will all auto transmission and they went and bought manual transmission trucks to start replacing the auto trans. We haul 63000kg most of the time in the mountains and that auto is very hard to hook and unhook. The Trans only slips so much then bam it engages the clutch and screws you everytime. Having a robot shifting the Trans works pretty well but you have to have a real clutch for low speed hook and unhook and for smooth taking off.

It reminds me of how many steam era locomotives had a carriage called a tender (carried lots of coal and water) for longer travels.
They would also need to upgrade truck stops to allow trucks to charge the batteries like fuel stations currently allow trucks to fill up on diesel.

Exactly. Talking about range and throwing out a number is absolutely meaningless. Range will vary greatly depending on many variables including weight, terrain, average speed, and the amount of stop and go traffic encountered. If it's 250 miles on flat ground with a moderate load at an optimum, constant speed, those grades you mentioned and countless others like them in the US could drag the range down into the double digits. Starting out in San Bernardino and having to stop and recharge in Barstow wouldn't cut it. I'm guessing these units will be limited to relatively short, preplanned local routes until if and when the technology improves greatly.

The chatter while they did the testdrive said the vehicle was intended to be used for predefined routes, suggesting such concerns would be addressed by preplanning the trip's route, destination and recharging actions. Basically you need to make sure the vehicle doesn't run out of juice and preplan accordingly.

Most truck parking is over 100 parking spaces then also who's going to install them in rest areas? When the truck hits a curb would it damage the engine that's in the axle? What about parts when the truck gets hit? Hell if companies go for this then our clocks have to be redone to compensate for this. Also how much is it going to be to recharge per kw?

You don’t always wanna be looking down at a screen, and chance taking your eyes off the road.
Just to change the a/c, lights, radio functions & various other ones that control the environment outside the car, & inside.
Until we have tactile touch screens, the physical buttons are superior in terms of giving the majority a tool they can use without sight, and can find by touch.

They could still power it with the straight 6 DD platform engines currently in use with a generator behind it just like a locomotive except miniaturizing the drive motors may be difficult. The current transmission already goes into e-coast mode under no load, downhill grade as detected by the IPPM module- integrated predictive powertrain module which detects grades through geographic identification. Since most class 8 trucks are 3 axle they could use the front drive axle as the regenitive type of charging as in an alternator for charging as well.

I believe Scania which is a European Lorry maker already has that. You can go 15 miles on the electric mode alone and the diesel will charge in 10 minutes back to 100%. It can also do half diesel and half electric like you mentioned.

Dude, you're clearly in the minority of people who are interested in trucks. We love noise and showing it off, whether it be in straight pipes or train horns (and I feel the same way). IMO though, electric trucks are a very sensible choice though due to how simple they are to maintain. Just link some kinetic motors to the axles to generate power and you'll hardly have to worry about range unless you stop driving for a while. 80-90 db noise is something people can deal with.
