Mind-blowing 24 hours with local tribe in Borneo! 🇲🇾

- There are more than 30 different tribes in Sabah, Borneo.
We visited the village where the Rungus people lives, in Kudat, Sabah.
In the past, the Rungus people were known for their powerful black magic, making gongs, and beads.
While many no longer practice black magic, the traditions of making gongs and beading are still alive. They are also the only tribe in Sabah who still lives in a longhouse.
It was interesting to learn more about their culture, traditions, and the purpose of the longhouse.
We even slept overnight, and had an interesting and humbling experience.
Check out our vlog!
Location: Bavanggazo Rungus Longhouse, Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia

JetLagWarriors is a Canadian couple -- Steve and Ivana. After travelling here and there for a few years, mostly during Canadian winter, we fully caught the travel bug and decided to travel INDEFINITELY! Subscribe to keep up with our journey. Thanks!
Following your channel from Brasil... what a wonderful world of cultures!! You're just so lucky for having such an opportunity to travel through so many diffrent places!! Have a nice time always!! God bless you and be safe!! Cheers!!
Can't believe I can watch 44 minutes of the vlog today. It's like a mini movie!
The weaving lady was so adorable definitely stole the show, was smiling throughout the video! Very cute!
Steve, many Dayak ethnics in Sarawak still live in longhouses. Some have been rebuilt using modern materials. Some of the longhouses were built from ironwood... latest rebuilding would usually dated early 1900 like the one my maternal grandmother is from. They have a community fb page.
Longhouses in Sarawak (both old & new) are definite MUST visits in Sarawak. It's amazing how they incorporate old traditions into new styles of construction.
Wow! This is an awesome vlog showcasing the culture of the tribes in Sabah! This is something all Sabahan should be proud of because your culture is unique.
Well said!! We agree
This is definitely up there as one of my many favourite videos. Keep safe, healthy and happy.
Can't wait for you to come here
Look forward to watching it later. TQ. There r many tribes in Sabah n Sarawak that people in Malaysia have yet to learn about their existence. Tourism documentaries n vlogs r certainly one of d best ways to know them.
A round of applause to Sabah tourism ⭐ to bring steve & ivana around to interesting & nice place 😄
oh my... I love how our slang sounds..besar - basal, cantik - santik... the inai/granny really stole the show. her charisma is infectious!!...
OMG the first gong strike was so....deep! Bring it home to Canada for your mom! Ultimate meal time bell or some Stranger Things scene at home!
26:32....the woman said "....biar lah" twice , means " let it be , let it be " she's willing to let Steve do it even Steve doing it wrongly 😅
seronok nya perjalanan jeatlag ivana di sabah, tak lama lagi Reggata Lepa di semporna sambil bercuti dipulau boleh lah menyaksikan budaya bagian pantai timur sabah👍🙋♀
in the olden days it was made from clay and glass in ancient times beads are a very valuable currencies in southeast asia, Ancient Kedah Tua which located in the Kedah state in Malaya used to be the biggest south east asian beads producer in ancient times since 3000 years ago. When you get back to peninsular i suggest you go to the Sungai Batu archeological sites to see the ancient Kedah kingdom site and the monument there, in Kedah if you rake the soil you can find colorful beads made from glass and clay all over the place.
Thank you guys, love this episode. Brought back memories of our visit to the village. The auntie is so funny, the way she was frustrated w/ Steve. :D Love her, so talented, wish I can learn from her! Saya orang Sabah (tinggal jauh sudah), suka dengar bila dorang cakap. Flo bilang penyengat & auntie tu mengomel lucu sama Steve. Ketawa saya! :D Beautiful costumes on the girls!
I must credit to sabah tourism for this.
Yayyyy! You had Sabah vege! It's one of my top favourite vege ever. Very simple to cook yet packs lots of nutrition. Just go to restaurants and order Mani Chai
Sabah Vege (a.k.a Mani Chai or Cekur Manis for semenanjung folks) is definitely a healthy choice. Even my doctor recommended it to me as a superfood.
Love love love this funtastic vlogg❤❤❤! The best ever. So glad you guys got to experience it👍👍👍 laughed so loud Steve- I gonged my head🤣. 6 stars Vlog guys. Thank you Pelancongan Sabah and Flo👌👍
I wish i can weave something like that beautiful motif when i 'm sleepy or drunk 🤣
Haha maybe only in sabah have sleepy and drunk abstract 🤣🤣🤣
My mother is a Rungus. Welcome to Kudat 😊
Did a 3-4 day treck in the northern part of Thailandyears ago and spent a night in a Karen village (long neck brass rings), house on stilts, woke up with the whole house swaying, turns out a water buffalo was getting his morning scratch on vigorously rubbing against one of the stilts.
Nice content. I'm Rungus myself. And I'm happy that you make time to promote attraction in Matunggong
I was Borned and raised in Kuching but have been in the states 44 years , went back twice to Kuching never been to sabah but will definitely go visit sabah . Two beautiful ladies speak fluently in English. Thanks for sharing

Shout out to granny who was the star of this episode! I wish they'd show the bamboo warrior dance in full because there's ones where they even do the full row blindfolded at faster beat. Gives me goosebumps each time!
If the pinakol depan mata won't feel like buying but when I see it on people gerigitan pula mau beli
Lol! Betulkan.. saya pun pikir sama.. :)
Awesome video as always and thanks for sharing with us your funtastic and fantastic time in Sabah. So excited to go with you both on the journey. A big shout-out to that cute grandma...so friendly and talented too. Wow, that weaving and beading are real complicated and it needs lot of patience and skill to do it.
Great content and l learned so much about the culture and traditions of the Rungus people there. Thanks again for all the experiences and inspiration you both share with us.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing with us a part of Malaysian culture that most people don't know about!
30:35 burst to laugh when Steve sing Shakira's hips dont lie 😂
Amazing vlog!! cant believe they are selling that for rm50. worth 10x more handmade
Exactly!
I loved the vlog, it was so fun. Steve you’re a great sport, trying everything . Good for you! Enjoy
Ivana put it at the middle finger because the ring finger is sacred and It's only for a true and real diamond ring, where Steve needs to put it while he is on his knees. 🥰
Bagusnya....selain Bandar KK..kampung ni memang wajib datang.rasa nak pegi je...ofcoz makanan Tu nampak sedap...nak cuba
35:43 kalau faham, buat... Saya tidak faham... so funny
This is called "Rungus Culture". In my village, still has a longhouse that still stands strong from 1972 to the present. it is 100 meters long...(mokimahap tuan ong amu avantang inggeris ku)😅

The grandma so friendly and when she about to leave I can see the dog waiting for her by waving the tail..😁
True, I never done sleeping in longhouse yet. They look so fun and the community looks cool
Steve is weaving again 😱 😆 Steve, you're really have the talent to weaving (something) 👏🏻👏🏻 You should consider it as a hobby. Good job Steve for trying 👍🏻 Ohh yeah, Ikan Basung is Sardines fish and Tuna is Ikan Kayu/Tongkol.
Steve you create a new motif of the craft, not drunken, not sleepy but it’s a “foreigner first try” new pattern tho…aunty will tell other visitor about the story of her new pattern. Well done, you create a history on it 😁😁
Cool video, guys..amazing activities!!! Sabah veggie is called changkok manis in Sarawak..only native to Borneo..like the medin & paku ferns. Stay blessed & happy travels to u both!!
Ivana, fern dishes are mostly homecooked kampung food. we rarely find them in restaurants. some gerai nasi campur might have them, like masak lemak or kerabu pucuk paku. they're expensive these days.
Good job Steve.. Hehe
Gongs are used by KDM natives to announce happy occasion (wedding, party) and sad occasion (death)
When I was younger growing up in Sabah, I used to be very confused by whether it was a party or a sad occasion when I'd hear the kulintangan . It always sounds so beautiful and I'd think "oh that sounds so joyful!" then someone tells me "they're having a funeral" 😅 😅 😅 😅 😅
@@fatef5817 They have faster tempo to announce death and it is always played at certain time of the day until the funeral is over.
@@fatef5817 Even more beautiful is the tuahi on radio when they put it on to announce
You are coming to Swak already?thats too soon! There are a lot of things you missed experiencing during this trip.Maybe next time then☺️
Minta perbadanan Pelancongan Sarawak Sponsor mereka.
Mereka ke Sabah kena Sponsor oleh Pelancongan Sabah

Salah bah tu boy..
Thank you-Terima kasih-Konsapatan(Rungus)
I appreciate you may not want to do this but I am very curious to know how much you make from your videos. If you could do a detailed breakdown of which videos have made you the most money, how much you have made in total since you began your channel and some insight into the variables that affect how much each video makes (besides of course the number of views), it would be greatly appreciated. I suspect it would also get a lot of hits and make you a good amount of money in the process :-) Many thanks and keep up the good content.
Sabah Borneo Nice 👍🙏🏻😇💕🌹❤️
Man that long house was top notch...
13:47 Talking about fern, you guys should try the Midin (bracken ferns) when you guys in Sarawak.

I really wanna go to West Malaysia.. but why the flight tickets so freaking expensive 😭
Book some time ahead. Aim to go during the harvest festival to really get a feel of the festivities. But otherwise these attractions are also available other times of the year
You mean East? West Malaysia is the peninsula or am I wrong?
@@caramelcupcake9065 U right. West Malaysia is Peninsula. Maybe he/she was confused or we understand it wrongly
Kenciko is thank u u guy wan to know

You got married with a 15 ringgit ring. 🤣
It's the thought that count. ☺
Don't sleep facing down at the long house Steve coz you will regret it when the 🏀🏀 gonna stuck between those bamboo floor. 🤣. Jk.
Doubt it. His is not that small to slip through. 🤣🤣🤣
gong in sabah is expensive and its not good quality hand made, in sarawak is still the best pure and the best in the world
Dah,,my grandfather have the sets, not this kind..i tell u,its top notch gong.please as fellow Borneo,do not act like the west style,'we better than'.
Technically this is a Rungus longhouse and NOT a Dayak longhouse. The latter you can find in Sarawak.
I was told Dayak is what you call the natives in Borneo?
Dayak is the collective term for natives of Borneo, that includes the Rungus, the Dusuns, the Muruts, the Ibans, the Bidayuhs.
U need to know history..Rungus tribe is part of Dayak.Borneo people is mostly Dayak with alot of ethnic..thus say Dayak Iban,Dayak Melanau,Rungus..all belong to big group of Dayak.
Yes she is right if you say you understand do it lol
