  • Scattered through Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, the Bajau are a semi-nomadic tribe of fishers with extraordinary freediving skills.
Research has shown that their anatomy has evolved to help them remain underwater for a longer time.
The Bajau’s traditional respect for their environment sets them as an example for ocean conservation.

My family are of the same tribe, and I grew up watching my uncles dive for food. They would be diving for hours with only a homemade harpoon as a tool. My cousins and I would dive for sea urchins and hunt eels as a pastime but also to bring food to the table. When there wasn't enough money to buy food, the sea always provided it.

One is Bajau people explained in this video, living in the seas along the coast of East Borneo, West Sulawesi (Makassar Strait - Celebes Sea), the islands of Nusa Tenggara and some parts of Molucca. Second is the Orang Laut in Karimata Strait and Natuna Islands between the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. And third is Moken people from the Mergui Archipelago off the coast of Myanmar. "...these adaptable people are the first to suffer from environmental changes affecting their way of life."
      No.
Humans (and every living species ever to exist) are always having to adapt to "environmental changes affecting their way of life". From the very beginning of humanity (and life), humans have been adapting to the changing climate. Indeed, human civilization itself was born BECAUSE of an earlier global warming (with attendant droughts).
It's fascinating that the neo-Marxist environmentalist cult is now veritably rejecting Darwinian science of natural selection. ....What the heck do you think "natural selection" means? Living creatures ALWAYS face adapting to environmental change or going extinct. If you deny the very existence of NATURAL climate change, then you are denying evolutionary science. You're just as bonkers as the Creationists. There is no cosmic (or divine) thermostat "out there" keeping the climate "just right".
Climate change IS nature. There's no such thing bas an environment which doesn't change. "Fighting climate change" literally means (if we take those words literally) fighting nature.

Sometimes it just ruins the whole purpose of what conservation is and makes it a "locals vs government" issue instead.

Sadly In the Philippines, because of the overfishing of commercial fishing trawlers a lot of the traditional fishing grounds of the Bajau Ancestral lands are now devoid of any fish. As a result, Bajau people rarely have food in their own lands thus resort to begging in the streets of the more urban areas of the Philippines. A lot of Filipinos discriminate against them, and the term "Bajau" is used as an insult. Filipinos do not respect aspects of their indigenous culture like they should in my opinion its sad. The whole word recognizes the uniqueness of the Bajau, but actual Filipinos treat them like dirt. Very cruel.

Not sure about specific minutes but if actors and actresses from AVATAR could be taught, in one year of intensive training, to hold their breaths between 5 to 7 minutes ---- because the movie is mostly about the water and underwater activities, requiring actors and actresses to hold their breaths for many minutes at a time for scenes --- it is VERY LIKELY that for a tribe who's born to make a living from diving, over many, many generations... many members LIKELY have the MUTATIONS (for spleen and other organs) to allow them to be able to use store/use oxygen way more optimally than even the best breath-holders in a Hollywood movie.
BTW, it also is true for HIGH ALTITUDE tribes: from the Himalaya to the Andes in South America, there are TRIBES that have evolved, through many many generations, to have better oxygen use/storage capacity in their system, so even with very thin oxygen level that would make almost all of us feeling very weak or sick... those tribal people with the appropriate mutations... they're just fine, up there in the extremely high altitude living....
Ditto for the Kung people living in the Kalahari Desert in Africa: they're, after TENS of thousands of years of living in such a hot environment, they have evolved ways, at the genetic levels, to cope better than the average human being... And Ditto for Eskimos living in the Far North, where at least 10 out of 12 months of the year, it's extremely cold....

As long as humans needed money to move the most cost efficient way to dump all that is probably under the seabed which over time would seep out and taint the sees turning it into a disgusting color. Unless there's an animal under there which would eat that humans would turn that into profit and once again move because of money.

In Viti, in our ancient knowledge, we know that from the beginning of time, there were only seven (7) tribes of people. And one them is the Gonedau, the sea/river people. They have dominion over everything on this planet that involves water i.e. oasis, streams, rivers, beaches, oceans, et cetera. The Gonedau would consist of two groups, the daunisoko (sailors/voyagers) and the dauniqolo (fishermen). From the beginning, when the world was inhabited, there were only foragers and hunters. Not even farming had been done. So this Bajau people are descendents of the Gonedau family worldwide. Their patriarch (god small 'g') is Dakuwaqa, the shark god.
