  • Having an effective emerger pattern during the sulpher hatch can improve your chances of one of those amazing days on the water. Becuse of the numbers of naturals on the water and the fact that the sulfers tend to leave the water fast, emergers and cripples can be what the trout key in on for the easiest meal. This pattern covers
    those flies. Materials- TMC 16 nymph hook, superfly yellow 8/0 thread, brown peacock herl, UTC copper wire x sm, cream Cahil CDC feather, sulphur dubbing loose.

    Hi Chris, I love your whole approach to tying flies, relaxed and flies to catch fish. Thanks Reg

      Glad you enjoy. Catching the fish is very important. :). This hatch of all of the hatches is one reason I am bald. I am out there trying to solve riddles just like everyone else. I do like to film or bring home the samples to look at. One thing to look forward to as we get old is all the wisdom that comes each snd every day that we all work on figuring things out. Thank for the nice note.

      @@ChrisWalklet Hi Chris, I am from Northern Ireland and fly fishing since I was about 5, I learned to tie flies when I was just over 6 years old. I have been stuck in the Philippines since Jan 2020, however no matter where I travel in the world a fly tying kit travels with me. I have also managed to get some materials sent to me. I am a senior citizen (77) so I am almost totally housebound with the lockdown. At the beginning of the lockdown I simply done a lot of reading and listening to music, I started to tie flies in August 2020. I usually tie for 2 or 3 hours about 5 or 6 days a week. I have tied all sorts and learned a lot from people like yourself on UA-cam , I am a big fan of Barry Ord and have copied a lot of his work also. I have tied trout flies, salmon flies and dollaghan flies, ranging in sizes from 6.0 down to 28. I am not a complete purist but about 95% dry fly, I have never fished with a bait or even a lure. I own about .75 of a mile on the river Maine in Northern Ireland, it holds a good head of wild brown trout, has a reasonable salmon run and a brilliant dollaghan run. Dollaghan are river trout that have gone to Lough Neagh for a few years and return to the river to spawn. The average size is about 3 pounds and up to 15 pounds, they are fantastic to fish. Fishing after dark is brilliant and can be very productive, they can be caught during daylight but it's not as much fun. I have 5 friends who fish my stretch of water and we seldom kill any fish. Our best run was over 200 in 3 weeks during a dollaghan run, we only killed 5 fish. Keep up the good work as I love your whole approach to tying flies. By the way I also make brooches and earrings . the Wally wing id very popular for these. It's bedtime in Calamba City so I will bid you goodnight, Stay safe and watch the bug. When I finished tying today my total flies tied here since August 2020 is 5,560. Not bad for an old codger what? I reckon that I will have to live until I am about 156 to use up my flies. ( None of my fishing buddies tie so they will soon disappear) Good Luck and Tight Lines. Reg

    Good proportion of exposed Dun color. I learned many years ago that WB (cold water) sulfurs were crippled in this ratio. Long story but I observed dozens of crippled sulfurs in the slack water while leaving after hours of many "refusals". It was an Ah Ha moment which, as you probably know is the key! Nice work! John

      Well said John. I too have had those days especially during this hatch. I just keep telling myself that one has to make a mistake sometime and determination just does not cut it. Yes they are that perticular. Its almost better to wait until the whole thing is over and then they become less choosey. At the time though it can be really frustrating that is why I tied this fly and some of the others. It is all about what works. Sure I like everyone else have hundreds of flies that I might never even get wet because when it is all said and done there are those goto patterns and each and every year we learn a bit more about those moments and hope to learn from them. Thanks.

    Good pattern Chris, your right about the trout taking the emergers more on the sulpher hatch.

      Thanks. I think this hatch can be the most frustrating.

    Nice pattern. Interesting that u tied thorax dubbing first before wing. What is tail/shuck material?

      You know I tied them both ways and found that the cdc got in the way so after doing them both ways I chose this way because the end result was the same with less trouble. Brown Antron tail. It's all about adjustments.... Finding out what works on the water and on the table. Good luck out there. Thre is no right or wrong just what works or doesn't for you. All the best

    Love this tying video very much. great work. What Blues artist is playing in the background? Is it Stevie Ray Vaughn?

    • @ChrisWalklet
      @ChrisWalklet  5 років тому

      Glad you enjoyed. They were not having it tonight though I can tell you that. It amazes me to see trout pick and chose between the naturals and imitations. I threw everything at them tonight and they just were too smart. Amazing. Its not Stevie Ray its off a CD that was meant to show the versatility of a certain custom guitar so I am not sure who but I like it too. All the best.

    Is that brown dyed peacock for the body or regular peacock?
    Thanks.

      Brown Spirt River peacock. Great fly tying material in Brown.

      Yes the brown works as a great body for the spinners too. Check out my Jackson spinner pattern using the brown peacock. Very life like and buggy.

      That would work for a scud for sure.
