Remnant II certainly is more Remnant, but it's by no means resting on its laurels. There are some big changes coming to core elements of the experience - from class design to visuals to procedural generation and more. Based on my hands-on time with it, all the new stuff is paying off - big time.

Possibly my favorite thing about Remnant 1 was just how wildly cool and different various Gun Mod bonuses were. You could build into being a spellcaster or summoner or healer just through that system. Build diversity is one of the most important and understated aspects of souls games and this team clearly knows what they're doing

Most the time I too played solo, my main companions were my two summons from Seed Caller and two summons from Beckon. So two short tree crab lookin things that also dual wield melee weapons and two floating skulls that fire slow moving projectiles. The two floating skulls would be helpful in other ways like blocking a boss’s melee weapon if they ever threw it right at me. Perfect shields in some scenarios. Combine that with rings like Soul Link (gives back player health when summons deal damage) and I could easily outlast any boss. Also remember people complained that they had a max cap of 4 summons and while it was fun to spam a near unlimited amount of skulls before patch it was the right move.

Fun fact: The actual first game of the series was called Chronos: Before the Ashes, but most people never played it because it was a VR title exclusive to Oculus. I wouldn't call 1 class that helps with solo-play a solution. I'm planning on playing solo at first and it's not the class I'm looking to play. I managed in the first one, so I'm hoping firmly cementing the classes as they have doesn't put too much more pressure on solo players.
Also hoping that the performance holds up. The bug in the first one were the only thing that really marred my experience in my first playthrough. Going through it a year or two later was so much better
Edit since I happened to be reminded of this comment: Solo is perfectly fine and I've only experienced a few disruptive bugs on PS5 after roughly 2 playthroughs, but I've heard of other performance issues that I'm sure anyone that cares could find in official reviews.

The only things that are static, as far as I know, are hub areas with merchants like the starting area/homebase, Ward 13, and the boss arenas.

Not everything was focused just on you. And you also have the potential for three completely different builds and 6 mods. You could stack bleed and fire or whatever else. If you knew what you were doing and had a cohesive group with was much easier. If not it could be quite a bit more difficult.

Big same. Adding a "solo class" with an AI companion doesn't fix solo play issues, it's a band-aid. Having a rough time because the class I like playing "isn't meant for solo play" isn't helped by suggesting I ignore most of the game's classes if I'm not playing co-op.
That said, I did end up having a good time solo with the first one, but only after some wiki deep-diving and getting some pets, then a nigh-unkillable heal-from-bleeds tank going. If that kind of build depth is a little more accessible earlier on in 2, that'd go a long way in my book.

I think my favorite element of Remnant 1 was the spot dodge. The fact that it had I-frames gave it such a risk-reward factor, allowing you to rely on precise timing to instant-dodge and then be ready to counter only a moment later. It kind of reminded me of the weave from God Hand. You were avoiding attacks, but you weren't avoiding the enemy, making it an aggressive dodge.
I wasn't a fan though of the way mob enemies would spawn every time I got into a fight though. Playing Souls games had made me focus a lot on level and enemy layout, so having the game suddenly throw in a bunch of mob enemies every time I got into a fight really threw me off. You forgot to mention a few things about classes. There will be 5 at launch, including a sniper class that has not been fully revealed yet. There will also be more classes to find during the campaign. And you can change your class at any time, since classes are based on items.
There are other additional features/changes that you didnt mention, I guess you didnt want to make the video too long. Here they are:
-There will be relics (healing item equivalent to estus flask) other than the base dragon heart, each having a different way of healing.
-There will be relic fragments, items that drop from hidden chests or strong enemies that you can put on your relic to get a buff upon using it
-There will be a kind of miniboss, stronger versions of elites that will have special drops
-We will have a limited number of trait points, around 85, that can be acquired by leveling up, killing bosses and finding trait books.
-They said they made bosses with minimal use of ads, and when they used ads, those are here for a good reason and not just difficulty
-You can use one spell of each class equipped at a time, and can change those out of combat.
-There will be mutators, a feature that is unknown at this point, but is linked to weapons (including melee iirc).
-We will be able to equip 4 rings at a time instead of 2.
-Each class has 4 passive "perks", a generic damage perk, a utility perk, a team perk, and a relic perk activating on relic use.
-Weapons go to level 20, armor doesnt have a level anymore, and each class goes to level 10. Each class level give you a free trait point for its class trait and progresses the unlocks of the class spells and perks
-There will be no more smashing hundreds of pots and destroying thousands of crates, all resources are dropped by enemies or found in chests. There are basic chests and hidden chests that contain more stuff.
-There will be 2 DLCs planned to release within 1 year.

You have one mutator on each weapon, including melee, they go to level 10 and they get an additional effect at level 10. Mutators and the material to upgrade them drop from a new kind of enemy, who are basically minibosses.
Since mutators are slotted in weapons, they will have all sorts of bonusses linked to weapons (the elder set bonus couldnt really be a mutator, so it was moved to the medic archetype), including completely new ones, like shots applying bleed.

What I like with the Remnant universe is that it mixes a lot of things, and nothing seems out of place. You have cowboys, medieval armors, guns, swords, a fantasy world but sometimes post-apo, sometimes sci-fi, you have demons, or maybe aliens ?
They took everything and managed to make a coherent world with it, like an old Heavy Metal comic book.

The only title I'm hyped for this year. I'm keeping that hype to a strict realistic level until it's out. I don't know of any solo player issue in the first title. It was a challenge but in no way out of bounds. I hope they haven't ruined that.

From the streams we've seen Remnant do, its about the same difficulty as 1. But some enemies have new twists to them that may catch you unawares!

the dual class thing is what ARPG grim dawn did with their game years back and it was excellent for build crafting and player identity. Glad they went with this option.

This and Starfield are the only games I need for the rest of the year. Remnant is easily my favorite third person shooter if not shooter overall.

Knowing how good the first game was and how ambitious and creative the devs are (from both the Darksiders games and Remnant 1), this is probably going to be the best game or top 3 of 2023 (because Baldur's Gate 3 is coming out soon too and that is already being praised as the best RPG ever made). Can't wait!

Compared to some titles that we got and that will come out in the next months i think this one looks pretty "save" to me. I was a little late for the first one but i'm glad i picked it up and i had no major problems with it despite playing solo ( exept getting my a.. handed to me by Gorefist as my first boss ). I hope they kept the " kill boss one way or another to get different loot " mechanic because i really liked it and not a lot of games have it. Remnants, Surge 1&2 and Lords of the Fallen are the only ones i can remember.

Yeah Gorefist as a boss is a pain for everyone. And it's only because of the ads! Thankfully that's not gonna be as big of an issue in Remnant 2. Only some bosses will have Ads if it makes actual sense. Similar to how Iskal Queen had those bug beetles as Ads. Similar thing in Remnant 2. But nothing like "Gorefist having those popcorns" kind of thing

this game is such a breath of fresh air, and i was really hoping the 2nd one got more polish and content.
    happy you're covering it.

Remnant 1's Overworld was also procedurally generated, same issues with the tilesets however.
On Remnant 1's difficulty: While you can make the game fairly difficult by playing apocalyps on a new game solo, it's generally quite easy if you are a souls vet and not completly new to aiming. The challenges usually come from multitasking (Mobs/Objectives), especially so when you can't play it save since you have to hold ground, push ahead or protect some npcs before being overrun.

The first game is, unironically, my game of the year from 2019. So much content packed into a lil 50 dollar game.
The DLCs were pretty decent too for the price. That rogue-lite survival mode, where exclusive rings and items could be obtained, is dope as hell too. Can't wait for the sequel

I'm excited for this, The first game just struck all the right chords for me and I've been hungry for the follow-up. Once I realized this is coming out fairly soon I just bought the complete edition for my series x and I'm giving it a solid run to get primed for the sequel

I have been hyping this game series up ever since I played the first one about a year ago, I pre-ordered remnant 2 as soon as it was available and this review fills me with the hope I needed that this series will continue to be one of my favourites.
