@@CognizanceBand you guys are so blessed to have David. Been following him for many years and im proud to see him going far with you guys. Cheers from the Caribbean ❤
David Diepold is a f'ing drums surgeon. Anyone who can cover Nile with this type of precision as well as Belphegor (and SO many other extreme metal bands) deserves proper credit.
People hate because they don't want to believe that you can get this good if you put in 1000s of hours. They want to play casually and believe they are the best
Me too. I think some people just have no recognition of real talent when someone is THIS precise. Guys a machine, can’t wait to see him with Obscura. 😎🤘🏻🤘🏻
Would love to see a Natty or Not on Travis Orbin. We all know it’s totally natty but really I just want to see people’s reaction to the most underrated drummer out there
Absofuckinlutely! If (when) this happens, I really hope he checks out his personal EP's. 'Projects II' and 'Finite' have some of the most mind fucking composition I've ever come across. He's so underrated, and it's not fair. He is the "human drum machine."
You can even see the pillows in his kicks bouncing around. And the fact that he's smiling and having a damn good time while doing this - and not looking like he's lost in concentration? Dope. Sick shit.
love david diepold ever since i saw his cover of Kingborn by Fleshgod. in that video he misses a snare hit in a roll and it's missing from the audio too. dude's legit and a monster.
I remember finding one of your videos like 10 plus years ago playing that metal song with the meshugah bleed part in the middle. Now here we are. Awesome to see you still putting videos out!!
David is a machine. I’m excited for new obscure stuff with him on drums and how he deals with the drumparts of Sebastian Lanser and Hannes Grossmann👌🏼.
I first discovered David with his Cryptopsy cover. I’ve played 2 shows with Cryptopsy...Flo is a god, but he always looks like he’s pushing as hard as he can. Meanwhile, David covers Cryptopsy and he’s smiling and barely breaking a sweat.
Wow good to meet you man. Also imagine Flo pushing hard, and someone like Kevin Paradis also struggling with covering cryptopsy.... and then there's david making it look like a breeze. He's too good and I've known it for probably 8 years now as I've been following him for a long time and I'm so happy he's finally getting the recognition he deserves❤
Have to put it out there... and it might just be me... but Craig’s explanation of how you can tell it’s real is FASCINATING! Like, I never knew any of this stuff before (not a drummer tbf) but also never really thought about it much.
He also has a video of this without the Nile song laid on top so it's just the drums audio. And you should check out his current day blast beat technique, it's pretty natty 😂
Been watching this dude for 7 years. His “dead set on suicide” cover was my first vid by him. Every damn video blows me away. I couldn’t imagine the hours this dude puts into his practice. Hearing what he writes for Cognizance is amazing.
At the beginning of David’s video we can read "Conservatoire of Music and Art" which is why there are chairs all around and I guess that place sounds awesome in person.
He started using double strokes later though. Personally, I don't care what technique or tools people use, double strokes or triggers, if it's the way they want to achieve the sound they want. If you say you don't use triggers or quantizing but you actually do, then you're a a liar. If you program drums and you say you program drums because that was the way to achieve what you wanted to achieve with the music, so be it. Fucking tired of people wanking over technical ability over how the music affects them. Like that one gobshite sending messages to every metal band he can find to ask "DO YOU USE TRIGGERS, SAMPLES OR QUANTIZING?" Like, if you can't tell just from listening, who gives a shit. Unless you're lying about it, but that's your problem. It's nice to be appreciated in your craft and to put the effort in, but in the end, the goal should be to create something that communicates the idea that you want to convey with the music.
hahaaaaaaaaa!!! Fuckin hell!! only 54 seconds in and Craig's already annoyed with us! US! This geezer is an absolute genius. I wonder how long his sentencing would be if he didnt have his kit to take out all the aggression on XDDDD Love it!
I've been practicing like him for over a year and yeah I'm nowhere close, been playing drums well over 20 years. I will tell everyone if I achieve it and how long it took me, the hardest part at least to me is getting the rolls even even maybe for a second or two but it falls apart fast and I can't do it when I want to, its freaking hard, oh and I practice around 4 hours a day everyday if not more to the point where I can barely use my hands and have to take a day or 3 to recuperate even then I try to practice for at least a few minutes, it sucks cause some days it feels like I'm going backwards.
Diepold always said he uses triggers, no shame in that, specially in this style And yes, he is THAT TIGHT irl Source: myself because I did FOH for his band Cognizance once
100% Agree totally natty. Yes, he has triggered on the kicks, but are they quantized no! His timing is still great with his feet, but it's not a straight quantized machine gun. You can still hear the human tempo inconsistencies that exist. In David's case, the triggers simply enhance the sound of the kicks to help them cut through the mix. As when you're playing at these speeds it's VERY difficult to have a clean attack and loud volume on the kicks.
@@Aspiritedpanda21 not a problem Kayla, as Craig says in these videos there’s not disputing that he can play, just the videos he puts out on social are over sampled
Incidentally I’m pretty sure when most American brands say “made in Turkey” then that means they’re made in the Murat Diril foundry. So like TRX, Soultone, etc. they’re just made to the company’s specs and branded for them.
I think after this you must do a reaction to Nile's drummer George Kollias .Yes David is in Obscura now , an incredible band but did you think he can play like this so fast without triggers?? Is impossible!!
you can hear the inconsistency in the rim shots like not in a bad way but they wont always sound exactly the same if its natty and thats how you knows this is undeniably real
Spencer Prewett made a statement once about triggers, “it doesn’t mean you hit the drum any less quickly than you did” (paraphrasing) but that nails it imo.
I can confirm he pulls stuff like that off and it doesn’t sound like shit live. Had the luck to play at a small festival where one of his bands headlined.
Well regarding what you said about "there is no way you can play like this guy and play any other way", he also has a Dave Weckl cover on his channel of Tiempo de Festival. So playing like him doesn't limit you much apparently 🤣
Gotta say, I like that you explain why something sounds real and when it's not. As someone who can't play anything for shit, it's ace to hear and have it explained what the differences are.
Someone thought this was fake? I think I'm done with life if I'm surrounded by people like that. And, the subject of triggers is crazy that "drummers" still don't understand them.
My favorite extreme metal drummer is krimh, that guy is fast but he handicaps himself because he hits everything so fucking hard every time, feet and hands. Its so satisfying to watch
I can confirm this is real, since I played with him in our youth :) when he was 16 we used to cover some Slipknot songs and he could play it all - but even way better than Joey!
Yes depending on the speed they wouldn’t sound anything like they do once they’ve been triggered (which happens on 99% of heavy recordings, AFTER tracking) No shade, it’s simply how it’s done
Dont know the drummer or band, but I 100% doubt theres any quantizing. Probably some compression and stuff to make everything sound fuller but this is real for sure.
And people wonder why us drummers suffer badly from carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve damage, knee issues etc etc etc. repetitive stress injuries are just part of the cost. It’s a full contact sport for sure.
Not sure why people hate on doubles on the kick so much. At 280bpm even doubles on the kick are hard to get sounding good all time like this guy. He also switches between singles and doubles on the bass, and pushes on his blasts. This dude is the real deal it's actually insane.
i dont hate doubles on the kick as long as you can do them well. i have a problem with doubles with triggers when the sensitivity is turned up all the way and the doubles sound great but are actually shit. but other than that i have no problem with doubles. clearly this man is real as hell
Love what you said about double strokes. It’s such a lame ass way to get those speeds. David is an example of someone who worked his ass off to be able to okay it with real single strokes, and single strokes with power at that. David is one of the best out there! Period.
That’s our lad, can confirm he is one of the best metal drummers/people out there 🥰
