  • Join me as I conduct a series of extremely unscientific experiments on the effect reverb from the bony plates of the skull has on the perception of perceived sound location in binaural recordings.
In reality just a long ASMR video with whispering, rambling, crinkling, tapping, and other sounds performed on a plastic skull equipped with binaural microphones.

Dude. I'm not sure you know this, but you just talking about stuff is awesome. You're very obviously an intelligent dude, you're voice is fantastic, and you speak so well. You, out of character, are just as, if not more interesting as you are in character. Do a review or something. Talk about some complicated subject. I don't care. But you're a value member of the ASMR community, in my opinion.

“We have much more humane ways now to be inhumane.“ Damn! That's some deep truth being spoken out.
Never expected to hear so much wisdom in an ASMR video in general. You create some exceptional work, Sir, hands down. Very delightful listening to you, and there's always something to be found that makes one think about. Like in your The Last Of Us role play (btw great job with that! It's my absolute favorite vid of yours to my favorite game) with those “non-painkillers“ lol. Loved that part!

Hey man! Been loving your videos and this is no exception, just wanted to leave a few thoughts here:
Firstly, don't be so quick to beat yourself up over perceived breaks of scheduling. I've always held that your particular style of ASMR focuses less on rapid submission, but instead a focused effort on the individual quality of each video. This is no doubt a very time-consuming process, but I think it is well placed effort. Your videos always feel way more cinematic. Akin to a short-length film, which is staggering, but impressive. Keep on going at the pace that suits your needs and demands. As you said: priorities. Secondly, scripts are fine! Actors love to have hints and queues whenever possible, so never feel like you can't utilize that powerful tool to help keep pace. Lastly, was interesting to learn of the nature of binaural versus stereo sound formats, even if it was very casual introduction. Thanks for all your efforts, and keep on pushing ahead in your craft!

Personally with your conundrum between mono, stereo, or binaural I will say I very much like the impact your voice has on a mono sound setup. it feels more deliberate; like the subject matter is the real appeal of the video and the asmr aspect is just a very pleasant bonus.

I don't usually like traditional asmr videos, but this was pure delight, partly because it was seriously tingly and relaxing and partly because, as usual, the quality of your content and production is always ridiculously high. For the record, I can perceive a marginal difference between the sound coming from behind the microphone and the sound directly in front of it, but that's with cheap earphones. Btw, as a non binary person, I don't find it offensive when you say "guys", but I still appreciate the conscious effort to use language in a way that does not exclude or offend others.

Shout out to ASMR Cleaner. I have been into ASMR for a handful of months now, and I have found a few favorites, but I also find that there are quite a few "big" names that seems to come up all the time whenever I try finding something to listen too/watch. Had an amazing time watching this video PS. I subscribe to a lot of people on youtube, including several ASMRtists, but to see a new video from you is by far the most exciting to me.
In regards to the 360 perception, I thought for sure that I was hearing it at first, as I guessed a couple revolutions correctly, however as the video went on I was less certain, as I was getting it as wrong as often as not. In terms of more traditional lower-production ASMR videos I'd be happy to see more from you, your bigger productions will always be the main draw for me but more casual videos dotted here and there would be nice - and as a matter of fact, I felt like this video - because it was so casual - had a very relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.

What's the phrase - long time watcher, first time commenter? Something like that.
I can definitely hear the difference when you (or anyone with binaural mics) are physically "behind" the microphones, but generally speaking, I am also subject to "suggestion" with stereo microphones.
To answer your more general question:
I've always enjoyed your general rambling, but this is the first video I can remember where you've gone into a great deal of whispering, and you have an absolutely wonderful tone for it.
The sound when you were squishing the packing peanuts was something I don't think I've ever heard in a video, and that was a nice one! The velcro puffs were also something I've not heard before, and that was a pleasant sound.
In general, I'd miss you doing your rambling, weirder roleplays, but you also seem to have a really good sense for simpler, quiet trigger videos, too.

As far as binaural awareness, extreme front and back do sound tonally different in this video and I can identify them respectively, but as the source approaches the periphery, I lose that definition.
To clarify: sounds at the rear seem somewhat lowpassed, while sounds at the front are unfettered. Towards the sides, however, there is very little difference between "slightly behind" and "slightly in front", between 0 and around 35-50 degrees off-axis from the 'ear' in either direction. Would a simulation of an ear work to rectify that?
When you moved the compass across the top of the skull, there was some very noticeable comb filtering, which may be due to some unwanted phase cancellation between your microphones. The effect was most extreme at the crown. Would 'proper positioning' of the microphones-for-ears address this?
As always, I loved the video and your ramblings. They're enjoyable regardless of any update schedule.

I could totally tell when he was behind the head and when he was in front of the head. Also the bunchems were SO GOOD TO MY EARS. UGH.

you should add some disconcertingly realistic eyes to the skull, trust me itll improve the asmr

Second time I've watched this in the last month. God, I love your videos. Perfectionism in scenery and sound, rambling on various topics and facts, and dark medical looking stuff? My dream. Here's hoping that relieving yourself of the burden of trying to up an imaginary 'video quota' will help you!
Also, the skull in Planescape was Morte. Morte was great. You should do a Planescape ASMR video. Maybe as the pillar of skulls? Maybe as one of the various "Nameless?"

Great video Phoenician! For scientific record, I could tell the direction of the glass bead traveling around the skull, but it probably would have been easier with some auricles on that skull.

Consturctuve criticism: After 30 min we get it, binaural is not your first choice for audio. But when it did happenned it was amazing so don't worry about stepping outside of your confort zone! Second point, you talk a lot about binaural theory so I though you would try different things in the video. One of those things (that didn't happen), was having the skull looking in the same direction as "us", meaning left ear on the left side of the audio. I think this changes a lot the way we interprent sounds (in a good way). Lastly (but not least), you said in the channel video you will not be doing ear cleaning videos. Im sure you can find a way around this, and keep true to you channel while giving something similar in terms of asmr effects.
Thanks for the videos, really! and I hope you get to read this, even if you don't completely agree! Cheers!

Very well done, I loved every minute of it! Your videos are always very well done and now we know why. This was a welcomed glimpse into your video making process and all the thought that goes into them. I really enjoyed the spatial awareness experiment, I could tell the left from the right but front to back was much more difficult as you pointed out. The best video that I have seen where the 3D sound effect is most apparent is in a video by MassageASMR titled ASMR Touch Tapping 7.1 No Talking - Gentle Tapping Ear to Ear, though I suspect he is using slightly higher end equipment than most ASMRtists, he seems to be a bit of an audiophile. NO script off the cuff is better, it makes for more interesting listening!

i had about 180 degrees of binaural awareness. Also would love a few more easy going videos from you. Honestly though, you could make the yellow pages sound super tingly

I love everything about this video. You're voice is so wonderful that I'd be happy if you just read something for a video (some grimm's fairy tales perhaps?). Also the marbles and especially those packing peanuts were super tingle-inducing.

I started typing a lengthy and seemingly endless comment about how much I appreciate the overall quality of your videos. And specifically what about it I like. But it was getting out of hand. So il just let this also pointlessly drawn out comment show for that appreciation instead.
Thank you for your work! These are great.

The 360 sound is definitely there, but just slightly. That MAYBE because I have some decent PC surround sound drivers that specifically calibrate for that, but who knows.

Nice Video Phoenician Sailor! I really enjoyed this video and I'm glad to see you posting again. I have been eagerly awaiting your new videos. I have already finished your Pioneer's Lash: An ASMR Murder Mystery series. I do hope that you will eventually come back to that series. It was one of my favorite things that you've made. Anyways, I love you and your content and I can't wait for the next video!

Not sure why,but its my most favourite videos of yours. Sound is amazing in it (in some your voice is a bit too loud for me), topic is interestingly presented and the test in the end keeps me questioning my hearing spectrum still

Agreed. i totally enjoy every scene he sets up. There is an interesting layer to every part of the screen.
I worry that he may agonize over it though. But, I hope he sees this aspect of the video as his art and doesn't feel negative for it.
