- Join me as I conduct a series of extremely unscientific experiments on the effect reverb from the bony plates of the skull has on the perception of perceived sound location in binaural recordings.
In reality just a long ASMR video with whispering, rambling, crinkling, tapping, and other sounds performed on a plastic skull equipped with binaural microphones.

Dude. I'm not sure you know this, but you just talking about stuff is awesome. You're very obviously an intelligent dude, you're voice is fantastic, and you speak so well. You, out of character, are just as, if not more interesting as you are in character. Do a review or something. Talk about some complicated subject. I don't care. But you're a value member of the ASMR community, in my opinion.
Thank you Paul!
I sure wish I hadn't made all those typos...
Paul Dennis, dude your comment still was very nice and supportive it doesn't matter
In everyone's opinion
But what if he still is in character....
Can I volunteer to be your next subject? Remember the monkey brains scene from Temple of Doom? Just cut a hole into that table and I'll be happy to stick my ugly mug up through it. Of course minus the scooping-the-brains-out part. I still need to get the family will written up.
Can we please. The ephemeral brains shall remain intact.
+Ephemeral Rift What if he scoops them out but replaces them with a bag of water? :P
+Ephemeral Rift if you did it in the style of your "I brought you a..." videos it might be the funniest thing ever.
@@remchaill9898 the water becomes wine
Anyone can be controversial.
A lot of people can be funny.
Some people can even be deep.
You're the only content creator who somehow manages an absolutely neutral "Interesting."
It's utterly unique in my experience. Good on you.
When I eventually pass away, I definitely give you the rights to use my corpse for an ASMR autopsy video.
Thanks for the video! Excellent work, as always. You always leave me with something to think about :)
Wut
lol wut
Wait wut?
+SilencerOftheHills Let me guess.. Aftermath: Genesis is your favourite movie?
+Tandia LittleCloverWhispers No
your voice has that perfect rumble to it its sooo relaxing.
House M.D. roleplay...... juuust leavin' that here. : ]
You're one of the few individuals I've seen that virtually exudes intelligence. You are so wholesomely eloquent in your speech.
I'm not even an ASMR guy, i just subscribe because he's hot as fuck
You deserve a like, but I'm on goddamn mobile
He's pure perfection.
+Erodict H-hey now- let's not forget that he's super creative, and very good at filming, composition, lighting and funny to boot! He seems super genuine and obviously intelligent...and yeah, hot af, lmao.
hahah true
+Erodict I'm definitely both lmao
The frankness of your conversation is a rare commodity in this community, and a much appreciated one. Also the warm colours of your ASMR den are almost as relaxing as the aural content, nice choices..
Good to see you back
+Ben WoodHead thanks Ben! I tried to make it as warm as possible.
Thorin Oakenshield ended up with an interesting hobby...
Someone else can see the similarity!
....I was gonna go with "Skully"....
This just proves that you are well more versed than I.
lol
Cory Fire I would have called it Mulder
I swear everything you say is full of years of wisdom.
Oh man , for reeeeal. He could quote "Green Eggs and Ham" and effectively change the world in the process with that tone lol
+GoSariGo that's a great idea for a series
+GoSariGo I..Agree.with that statement...
+Rob Steele not actual wisdom though. Just conviction. ;)
Omg do a Hamlet ASMR, I would love to fall asleep while you read Shakespeare, it would be a total dream!
I just found your channel a couple of weeks ago, and I've been eagerly awaiting your next video ever since.
Your content has been incredibly helpful to me. I still haven't watched all of your videos, but there are several in particular that I've watched over and over again, because they're so good. It's always a pleasure to listen to you talk, because you speak in such an intelligent and well-spoken manner.
Thank you so much for the work that you put in to provide these for us.
I completely understand your desire for perfection in your work, and I very much respect that. Just know that I (and many others, I'm sure) will support you no matter what you put out.
+Danaya Huber thank you that means a lot, Danaya.
I enjoy how your rambles turn into a spiel of what your thoughts are onto a certain subject. It feels very authentic and relaxing in itself.
Every time you put out a video it invariably becomes my go to for several weeks. The rarity of new videos just make it that much more satisfying when you do put them out.
if the voice in my head sounded like you I would probably crash my car frequently
that sounded way meaner than I meant. i would fall asleep driving.
+whisperlistener52 lmao
I actually really enjoyed this video.... I would love to see more! I think it actually gave me my first real tingles when you were rolling the marbles around the board...
+xFrancisco Ah! congrats on your first real tingles! *throws confetti*
The sounds in this were so so good. Every now and then you would say something that would make me smile. It's a good mix and I actually managed to sleep through the night for once so thank you as always.
+The ASMR Cat I've missed your videos, Cat! I'm glad you liked this :)
Aww =3 I cannot think of a single video of yours I dislike.
Keep a look out over the next couple of days...
“We have much more humane ways now to be inhumane.“ Damn! That's some deep truth being spoken out.
Never expected to hear so much wisdom in an ASMR video in general. You create some exceptional work, Sir, hands down. Very delightful listening to you, and there's always something to be found that makes one think about. Like in your The Last Of Us role play (btw great job with that! It's my absolute favorite vid of yours to my favorite game) with those “non-painkillers“ lol. Loved that part!
Your effort and talent are goals. You deserve so much more recognition on YT for all the amazing work you do. Thank you so much and please keep those awesome vids coming!
Hey man! Been loving your videos and this is no exception, just wanted to leave a few thoughts here:
Firstly, don't be so quick to beat yourself up over perceived breaks of scheduling. I've always held that your particular style of ASMR focuses less on rapid submission, but instead a focused effort on the individual quality of each video. This is no doubt a very time-consuming process, but I think it is well placed effort. Your videos always feel way more cinematic. Akin to a short-length film, which is staggering, but impressive. Keep on going at the pace that suits your needs and demands. As you said: priorities. Secondly, scripts are fine! Actors love to have hints and queues whenever possible, so never feel like you can't utilize that powerful tool to help keep pace. Lastly, was interesting to learn of the nature of binaural versus stereo sound formats, even if it was very casual introduction. Thanks for all your efforts, and keep on pushing ahead in your craft!
You remind me of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Your face, your voice, the way you speak and hand movements, everything!
Why not Dean Brom? lol I can see it. Add a little grey to his hair, look at little more rugged. Could definitely pull a Brom Cosplay off
A Iron Man role-play would be AWESOME!
"... a more contemporary name, for instance Sans, Papyrus" hello, yes, undertale I am here.
When this video popped up in my feed, I was so thrilled! Love the channel and love when new (and consistently great) content is posted. It is so worth the wait.
You are so amazing, I know you put so much care and effort into your videos that you might not release as often as other artists but it makes your videos all that more worthwhile. Loved this as well!
It's Morte! That's the name of the skull from Planescape Torment. Loved him.
You've been my favorite asmr artist for about a year now...and I'm so happy I discovered you. This is totally a success. I can notice the subtle changes in binaural, so this video was great. Thank you Sailor!
When you put the tube over the "ear" of the skull, the resonance of it gave me mad tingles!
The sound of those pebbles on the ridges is absolutely exquisite :0
The skull from planescape torment is called Morte i believe :)
Great video by the way
Top notch content.
I could hear you talk all day.... I love how broad your vocabulary is. Also , I agree about the 3Dio. It's not as "Trigger Happy" as other mics.
The friendship he has with ER makes me so happy. Anyone know if they've ever collaborated?
I love all the little details you put into the sets of your videos. Yours are honestly some of the highest quality ASMR videos! (or videos in general, haha)
+Xavier of Nine thank you, I appreciate it.
Personally with your conundrum between mono, stereo, or binaural I will say I very much like the impact your voice has on a mono sound setup. it feels more deliberate; like the subject matter is the real appeal of the video and the asmr aspect is just a very pleasant bonus.
Way to work some science, evolutionary theory and science communication into an ASMR video! I love it!
I don't usually like traditional asmr videos, but this was pure delight, partly because it was seriously tingly and relaxing and partly because, as usual, the quality of your content and production is always ridiculously high. For the record, I can perceive a marginal difference between the sound coming from behind the microphone and the sound directly in front of it, but that's with cheap earphones. Btw, as a non binary person, I don't find it offensive when you say "guys", but I still appreciate the conscious effort to use language in a way that does not exclude or offend others.
+Hugh Briss thank you, I want to be as inclusive as possible. Mores are ridiculous, people can identify however they want.
I really like the unscripted rambling. It's super relaxing and stimulating in a sleepy kind of way.
And while part of me wants to flail that you don't need to hold yourself to nearly as high a standard regarding production quality, I'm also really grateful and floored that you do. Thank you so much for these beautifully creative puddles of calm. :)
Your videos are all so high quality and relaxing! They really help in alleviating my insomnia
I really needed this today, thank you! It's nice to see a more casual (by your standards) video like this from you, I hope you do more in the future. xoxoxoxox
The camera quality and the sounds were so crisp and perfect I love it
Really enjoyed the rambling about mics and binaural recording. I've become intrigued by binaural recording lately and it's possible uses in music recording. Keep it up
Your whispering voice is one of the best I've ever heard, if you could do more up close binaural whispering next time I would be forever grateful
+Tyrosine222 thank you! I don't really like my whispering voice so I don't do it much. Perhaps I need to consider a change.
Binaural wise, I get the sound at the back, and the sides, but at the front it tends to shift upwards. Which is odd. Sort of like a quarter of a sphere.
Happens to me with everyone but frank the binaural microphone. But he's a God with sound equipment.
wonderful combination of spoken word and sounds. I use ASMR's every night to help me sleep and this will be one of my 'go to' videos. More like it, please.
This channel deserves way more subs and views
A video the night before I get on a plane?! I will get some sleep tonight. Best timing ever!
I clicked on this video so fast, I got dizzy. But, I could still tell the difference between in front of and behind the binaural microphones.
your videos are so creative and detailed- like a classic authentic novel full of vivid imagery. i hope you know that this holds a great deal of therapeutic value, and it helps put my mind at rest when i am anxious worried or deeply troubled. thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Wonderful sounds. Also, welcome back.
I know this is an older video, but when you were talking about how you couldn't hear the difference in location when you were moving the things around the outside of the board, I noticed a difference, definitely.
Slightly behind the skull was a deeper pitch to the sound, where as when you did it slightly in front it had a higher pitch.
name the skull "Sir Daniel Fortesque"
I'm not gay
+Tom Clancy lies
Killed in the first charge during the Battle of Gallowmere... Tragic.
+STH's Stuff There was a PSP port of the original. Wasn't the same.
I recall 2 was notoriously difficult.
I can imagine there being a third game if the company is still around or the rights.
Possibly a Telltale adventure could be hilarious.
Captain Holiday I so wish they would make a remake of medevil. That game was my shit.
1:00:00 For me it was 180 degrees and not 360. On top of that, the bead rolling starting at 0:45 was amazing for me.
This was a lovely, calming video, with some sounds that really triggered me - the packing pellets especially. You have a warm, soothing voice too which helps me to relax very easily.
Also, the picture with the skull at an odd angle reminded me of Holbein’s "The Ambassadors" , which made me smile.
Looking forward to the next video, even if the hints of blood might put me off slightly.
First time I've actually made it to the end of this without falling asleep but wanted to respond with the information that I, like you, was more or less Incapable of distinguishing the front and rear from audio only.
That said, love the video, and would love to see more like it! Nothing will surpass your more production heavy videos of course but more of these rambly traditional asmr videos would definitely be something lovely.
Hope you're doing fantastic and thanks for the video!
Shout out to ASMR Cleaner. I have been into ASMR for a handful of months now, and I have found a few favorites, but I also find that there are quite a few "big" names that seems to come up all the time whenever I try finding something to listen too/watch. I wanted to find gems, so I've done a few searches for "underrrated" ASMRtists, and ASMR Cleaner directed me here, to the Phoenician Sailor. He wasn't wrong. You deserve way more than almost 50k subs, I think.
I subbed.
I just love putting your videos up on one of my side monitors to listen to you talk whilst I work away.
Oh and to throw on my pair of noise canceling headphones, oh it's the best.
you are utterly brilliant. take your time and continue to make unique high quality stuff. ASMR doesn´t get better than this,
and also, please don´t go to jail for having a basement full of skulls and blood!
+Robert Hedin Ahlning I gotta say it was pretty embarrassing.
Had an amazing time watching this video PS. I subscribe to a lot of people on youtube, including several ASMRtists, but to see a new video from you is by far the most exciting to me.
In regards to the 360 perception, I thought for sure that I was hearing it at first, as I guessed a couple revolutions correctly, however as the video went on I was less certain, as I was getting it as wrong as often as not. In terms of more traditional lower-production ASMR videos I'd be happy to see more from you, your bigger productions will always be the main draw for me but more casual videos dotted here and there would be nice - and as a matter of fact, I felt like this video - because it was so casual - had a very relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.
After getting really mellow and relaxed from watching, I couldn't help but burst out laughing when you started putting those things in your beard while keeping a perfectly straight face.
That's alright though. Laughter is also a great way to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Thanks for the great vid!
What's the phrase - long time watcher, first time commenter? Something like that.
I can definitely hear the difference when you (or anyone with binaural mics) are physically "behind" the microphones, but generally speaking, I am also subject to "suggestion" with stereo microphones.
To answer your more general question:
I've always enjoyed your general rambling, but this is the first video I can remember where you've gone into a great deal of whispering, and you have an absolutely wonderful tone for it.
The sound when you were squishing the packing peanuts was something I don't think I've ever heard in a video, and that was a nice one! The velcro puffs were also something I've not heard before, and that was a pleasant sound.
In general, I'd miss you doing your rambling, weirder roleplays, but you also seem to have a really good sense for simpler, quiet trigger videos, too.
get him an eyepatch and he can be one eyed Willy from The Goonies
It's taken me three separate attempts I write this comment because on all occasions, I have fallen asleep before I could do so. This example reinforces my disagreement with your statement that you are "full of it". You are a master of your craft, you are an ASMR genius.
Late comment, but the skull from planescape was Morte. I'll never forget him. Kudos for remembering the game. Every time I talk about it I just feel.. old.
This might be a weird question, but are you a doctor or physician of some sort?
The skull should be named Yorick. For I knew him, Horatio.
I got what you were talking about with the binaural sound I always found it difficult to differentiate too!
Another awesome video. Thanks PS!
Brilliant! i love the incorporation of So much into One, your gaining by the experience, we're gaining by it. endless variables to contemplate! parallel usage on a serious scale!! and i get to sleep, comfortably. i love this new feeling of looking forward to going to bed, it's amazing! Thank you for all your work and sharing with us!
This video makes me ridiculously happy. I couldn't go to sleep cause it was way too interesting to listen to, but whatever, maybe next time I watch it. :) Thanks for all you do and the attention you give your videos.
As far as binaural awareness, extreme front and back do sound tonally different in this video and I can identify them respectively, but as the source approaches the periphery, I lose that definition.
To clarify: sounds at the rear seem somewhat lowpassed, while sounds at the front are unfettered. Towards the sides, however, there is very little difference between "slightly behind" and "slightly in front", between 0 and around 35-50 degrees off-axis from the 'ear' in either direction. Would a simulation of an ear work to rectify that?
When you moved the compass across the top of the skull, there was some very noticeable comb filtering, which may be due to some unwanted phase cancellation between your microphones. The effect was most extreme at the crown. Would 'proper positioning' of the microphones-for-ears address this?
As always, I loved the video and your ramblings. They're enjoyable regardless of any update schedule.
I could totally tell when he was behind the head and when he was in front of the head. Also the bunchems were SO GOOD TO MY EARS. UGH.
I clicked so fast when I saw this in my sub box
you should add some disconcertingly realistic eyes to the skull, trust me itll improve the asmr
also, i heard a difference between the things happening in the front and in the back, but i wasnt quite able to mentally place which was which without looking
Second time I've watched this in the last month. God, I love your videos. Perfectionism in scenery and sound, rambling on various topics and facts, and dark medical looking stuff? My dream. Here's hoping that relieving yourself of the burden of trying to up an imaginary 'video quota' will help you!
Also, the skull in Planescape was Morte. Morte was great. You should do a Planescape ASMR video. Maybe as the pillar of skulls? Maybe as one of the various "Nameless?"
You have a nice conversational way of speaking and very fresh format of video making. just stumbled across you and love the content you create! keep it up!
I don't know when you started whispering because I fell asleep part way through but I think it really worked well for me. Nice video.
Great video Phoenician! For scientific record, I could tell the direction of the glass bead traveling around the skull, but it probably would have been easier with some auricles on that skull.
Consturctuve criticism: After 30 min we get it, binaural is not your first choice for audio. But when it did happenned it was amazing so don't worry about stepping outside of your confort zone! Second point, you talk a lot about binaural theory so I though you would try different things in the video. One of those things (that didn't happen), was having the skull looking in the same direction as "us", meaning left ear on the left side of the audio. I think this changes a lot the way we interprent sounds (in a good way). Lastly (but not least), you said in the channel video you will not be doing ear cleaning videos. Im sure you can find a way around this, and keep true to you channel while giving something similar in terms of asmr effects.
Thanks for the videos, really! and I hope you get to read this, even if you don't completely agree! Cheers!
You should do more video's with this skull setup, the ear cupping was really nice!
Very well done, I loved every minute of it! Your videos are always very well done and now we know why. This was a welcomed glimpse into your video making process and all the thought that goes into them. I really enjoyed the spatial awareness experiment, I could tell the left from the right but front to back was much more difficult as you pointed out. The best video that I have seen where the 3D sound effect is most apparent is in a video by MassageASMR titled ASMR Touch Tapping 7.1 No Talking - Gentle Tapping Ear to Ear, though I suspect he is using slightly higher end equipment than most ASMRtists, he seems to be a bit of an audiophile. NO script off the cuff is better, it makes for more interesting listening!
+D Watt Oh and flip the video!
i had about 180 degrees of binaural awareness. Also would love a few more easy going videos from you. Honestly though, you could make the yellow pages sound super tingly
You were right the first time when naming the parietal bone :) Temporal bone is near the ears almost near the sphenoid bone!
I love everything about this video. You're voice is so wonderful that I'd be happy if you just read something for a video (some grimm's fairy tales perhaps?). Also the marbles and especially those packing peanuts were super tingle-inducing.
amazing stuff as always
You should pursue a career in voice acting or audiobooks, your voice is so nice and deep, powerful yet soft, I'd love to hear you read some Poe or Lovecraft, maybe even some Stephen King
You deserve more subscribers! :D
I started typing a lengthy and seemingly endless comment about how much I appreciate the overall quality of your videos. And specifically what about it I like. But it was getting out of hand. So il just let this also pointlessly drawn out comment show for that appreciation instead.
Thank you for your work! These are great.
put your videos out when you can man, ill be here to watch them!
The ambiance of this video was awesome
This was very successful video for me, it relaxes me to the point sleeping at my desk.!
I prefer dens, and studies. Man caves are fine, but there's something nostalgic and classy about these.
I do prefer the continuously-speaking kind of ASMR videos. It so relaxing to listen to your deep voice that I don't need any other ASMR trigger. THX ;-)))))))
The 360 sound is definitely there, but just slightly. That MAYBE because I have some decent PC surround sound drivers that specifically calibrate for that, but who knows.
Respect as always.
You are fascinating and eloquent. As always, it's a pleasure to spend time in your company!
DONT KNOW WHY I AM JUST FINDING THIS NOW BUT I JUST GOT REALLY EXCITED YAS
+Jessica Hewitt YES!! I found you.. My dream girl
This was really nice I enjoyed it a lot, you were very funny in this video btw and keep up the good work.
Nice Video Phoenician Sailor! I really enjoyed this video and I'm glad to see you posting again. I have been eagerly awaiting your new videos. I have already finished your Pioneer's Lash: An ASMR Murder Mystery series. I do hope that you will eventually come back to that series. It was one of my favorite things that you've made. Anyways, I love you and your content and I can't wait for the next video!
+Elykmai thank you! I'm determined to finish it.
Not sure why,but its my most favourite videos of yours. Sound is amazing in it (in some your voice is a bit too loud for me), topic is interestingly presented and the test in the end keeps me questioning my hearing spectrum still
I like your attention to detail. You do a great job. I think you'll get better the more you do - just make them when you can. Many appreciate it.
Agreed. i totally enjoy every scene he sets up. There is an interesting layer to every part of the screen.
I worry that he may agonize over it though. But, I hope he sees this aspect of the video as his art and doesn't feel negative for it.
I really enjoy this ^_^ Add some steaming mugs of coffee and it could be an afternoon with friends (This really could be something we would get up to. You'd probably feel right at home :D)
Feedback! The pebbles and the board: full of win!
Thanks very much. These videos are fantastic.. please be encouraged since you're doing such a good job and helping people.. it's also an excellent creative exercise. Well done.
